I want to make you aware of an urgent safety concern at Woodview. Each day at dismissal time we have cars parking in front of our school on Alleghany and on the corner of Alleghany and Woodland. The cars parked in these locations are obstructing the vision of drivers trying to make it home safely. It has been difficult for our crossing guard to help students cross. I urge you to park in our parking lot when picking up your children. It takes a few extra minutes to pull into a parking space but it will ensure safety for all. We look forward to warm spring weather. Keep in mind, in our area temperatures change through the day. Students will be going outdoors for recess and sometimes P.E., and may need to dress in layers in order to be prepared. Our grass is still very wet so boots con-tinue to be necessary. We look forward to another PTO sponsored event. On Friday, March 9th we will have Bingo, Beef and Baskets from 5:30– 8:30. This is a fun night for families to socialize, purchase dinner and play Bingo with others. Raffle baskets are a popular way to win fun prizes while supporting our school. You may even see a few of our Woodview teachers calling out bingo. We hope to see you all there.

Woodview’s Bingo, Baskets, and Beef Night

Friday, March 9

Food for sale catered by Mitch’s Chicago Style Grill

The Multi Purpose room will be open for kids to play in. A variety of gym equipment will

be available to play with. Please supervise your children in the MPR. Questions? Email WoodviewPTO@gmail.com

Doors open at 5:30pm. Bingo games played until 8pm. Raffle Room open 5:30-8:00. Winners will be announced at 8:30pm (winners need not be present to

win).

Bingo cards cost $1/game or $3/session. 3 sessions of bingo will be played at 45 minutes each. One card can be purchased for $7 and valid all night (3 sessions). Teachers will call bingo numbers. Prizes include candy, small toys, and tickets for Raffle items found only in

the Bingo room.

Raffle tickets cost $1 for 1, $10 for 12, or $20 for 25. Raffle items include an iPod Touch, two night stay at the Wilderness Resort, 2 tickets to a Cubs game, a Weekend Getaway,

Best Buy gift cards, and many, many more.

Beef sandwiches $4, Hot dogs $2, Mac and cheese $2, Small salad $1, Large salad $2, Bag of chips $1,

Water $1, Gatorade $2

BOX TOP COMPETITION

A new box tops contest has begun and it is boys versus girls! The

group that collects the most box tops by April 5th will win bragging rights. Will it be "boys rule" or "girls rule"? Please have your child

turn in box tops to their teacher in a bag or envelope labeled "boy" or "girl". There are "boy" and "girl" collection boxes in the office as well.

We have collected over $1600 worth of box tops so far this year!

Do you have old cell phones around your house?

The Woodview PTO is collecting old cell phones and will receive funds for each cell phone we collect. If you have a phone you would like to donate, please have your child bring it to the school office. Please remove SIM cards before donating to protect your privacy.

HELP WANTED

The PTO is looking for someone to fill the TREASURER position for next school year. This position requires some familiarity with bookkeeping. The treasurer is responsible for keeping track of all funds that the PTO brings in and gives back to the school. The new treasurer will have the opportunity to learn the ins and

outs of the position from the current treasurer.

Woody’s S’more Store

Student Council will be opening Woody's S'more Store the week of

January 23-27. The store will have Woodview pencils, bendy pencils,

pencil grips, erasers in fun shapes, folders and koala pencil

huggers. All items are priced $1 or less. The store will be open

from 7:55-8:20 am each morning and students will be allowed to shop on

their assigned day of the week.

If you have any questions about the school store, please call the office.

P.E. UPDATE

The 3rd and 4th graders are in the final days of a unit called Eclipse Ball which is just like tennis. It helps the students work on their hand-eye coordination. After Eclipse Ball, the 4th graders will be learning how to roller skate for two weeks, and the 3rd graders will be going through some fitness days.

Kindergarten-2nd graders have been working on their hand-eye coordination as well. They have been practicing hitting, passing and bouncing different balls on tennis racquets. They have been doing a great job and we look forward to them being able to learn new games through the tennis racquets. A HUGE THANK YOU GOES OUT TO THE RISING SUN MASONIC LODGE IN GRAYSLAKE FOR THE VERY GENEROUS DONATION TO THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. The money will be going towards new fitness equipment that all Woodview students will be using. Mr. Feldman and Mr. Mulvaney

P.E. Teachers

Art News

I am always looking for more parent volunteers to help out in the art room at various times throughout the

year. If you are interested in helping please contact me at heinz.allison@d46.org.

There are different supplies that the art room is always looking for: Washable markers, baby wipes, pencils,

glitter, kids treats and prizes, masking tape, large zip lock bags, tissues.

Kindergarten

The students are learning about the primary and secondary colors. They are painting a piece of paper with

each color. Then the students will turn their brush over and make marks on their paper, this is texture. When they

finish, the Teacher will read them an Eric Carle storybook and learn all about the artist. With their textured paper,

they will make an outdoor picture by cutting out shapes and gluing it all together.

First Grade

The Teacher will read the story; Huggly takes a Bath, by Tedd Arnolds. The students will then have to create

their own bed monster out of construction paper. They will have to be creative and use their imagination to come up

with a unique bed monster. The students will also be learning how to decorate their monster by cutting out shapes

instead of drawing it out. To do this project, the students will also learn how to do printmaking. They will be making

bubbles so their bed monster can take a bath.

Second Grade

The students are learning about the life of the artist named Vincent Van Gogh. They will be learning about

the art period he was in, Post Impressionism. Van Gogh liked to show his brush strokes in his work, and the students

will have to follow that style in their art project. The students are also learning what is in a landscape: the

foreground, the background, the sky, a horizon line, and nature. In their art project, the students will draw a starry

night landscape, just like Van Gogh famous painting, The Starry Night.

Third Grade

The students are learning about the life of the artist named Georgia O’Keeffe. The students will find out that

Georgia O’Keeffe like to paint flowers really big and close up. The students will have to create their own flower close

up. Also, the students will learn about the analogous colors, which are colors adjacent to each other on the color

wheel. They will have to use analogous colors when they paint their flowers.

Fourth Grade

The students are working with clay and constructing their own Big Mouths. A Big Mouth can be an animal,

person, or made up character that looks like their mouth is open really wide. This is a fun lesson where the students

have to use their imagination as well as critical thinking as to how to construct a three-dimensional art project. They

will be learning new vocabulary words that go along with ceramics, for example: wedge, scoring and slipping, kiln,

leather hard, bone dry, bisque fire, and glaze fire.

Second graders at Woodview got a special treat last week when members of the Grayslake Central Rams Girls Basketball team stopped by to read a few books.

Thanks to them for spending a little time with us, after making it all the way to the Sectional

Championship game….Congratulations on a great season!
