Having last year secured major grant monies fromNHS England, the Henry Smith Charity and theWolfson Foundation, Woodlands embarked upon asignificant building project for 8 months, the results ofwhich are now being enjoyed by all patients, visitors, staffand volunteers. New facilities include:

Reception areaThe new reception is far more spacious and modern in feel, has aseparate, more discreet entrance for ambulance crews to allowpatients being admitted to the Inpatient Unit in a more dignified anddiscreet way, straight to the ward, without having to wait in the mainreception area with all other visitors.

The reception is now one integrated reception covering all services, and sits centrally on the ground floor giving access to all facilities andenabling free movement from one facility to the next.

Within the new reception wehave also been able to moreclearly display our Tree of Life asa focal point (see more of this onpage 5) and allocate a smalldisplay area for our new goodsshop which is another of ourfundraising initiatives run by ourvolunteers.

For those who knew thereception previously they areoverwhelmed and delightedwith the changes and forthose who are first timevisitors comments have been positive andwarm.

The Green (waiting area, lounge and caféwith access to main gardens) Leading straight from the new reception is our fully refurbishedGreen Room which, with its modern décor and new colourful butrestful furniture, serves a number of purposes. It is centrally locatedin the Hospice, with previously dividing walls now knocked down, itsopen access allows all patients and visitors to flow freely across allservices. It gives Inpatients and their families a comfortable place torelax away from their bedrooms and patients visiting the Well-being

and Support Centre for day services, outpatients or groupsessions a place to sit with other patients, friends and family.

The café situated in The Green is anew venture for the Hospice, mannedmainly by volunteers with one paidsupervisor, and is proving a realsuccess. A small but varied menuprovides breakfast choices andlunch with hot and cold meals anda variety of drinks withsandwiches, cakes etc. Currentlythe café is open 9.00am to 4pm

Monday to Friday and we are nowrecruiting volunteers for weekends 11am to 3pm so

that we can extend the facility to Saturdays and Sundays.

Staff and volunteers are also enjoying The Green and meeting upwith colleagues and friends for a cuppa or to share lunch. Staff alsomeet with visitors where appropriate in a more relaxed atmosphere.

A vibrant hub was the vision when we first worked with thearchitects on the drawings and we are delighted that we are nowseeing this vision become a reality.

The Therapy RoomFor our Physiotherapists the need was to create one larger room tofacilitate exercise classes as well as to accommodate individualassessments with patients from all services.

For our Occupational Therapists the need was to have a centrallocation in which they could assess patients readiness for home.

Joining these needs together in our new Therapy Room in a centrallocation at the back of the building, overlooking the main garden, hasenabled many more activities, such as larger group therapy sessions,to take place and for patients of all services to meet with each other.

Woodlands new facilities areproving popular with everyone

The Garden Room and Patio Room

Converting the previous spaces in these areas into light, modernrelaxing rooms with views of the lovely gardens has given ourpatients in the Well-being and Support Centre services theopportunity to sit with each other in quiet spaces and enjoy thegardens whilst supporting each other and partaking in the servicesprovided. The Garden Room itself converts into an Art room for theCreative Therapy classes and patients enjoy these bespoke facilities.

The Quiet Room

Sitting tucked away behind the reception butwithin easy reach of all services, the newlydecorated and furnished Quiet Room bringstogether our two previous chapel areas andis a little oasis for quiet reflection.

The stained glass windows from the olderchapel have been carefully removed andremounted on the wall of the new roomin light boxes creating a warm andrelaxing ambience.

Overnight AccommodationWe have alwaysbeen aware of theneed for facilities forfamilies stayingovernight with theirloved ones, and untilthis new build wecould only offer aput-me-up bed inthe room with the

patient. One of our key items on the original specification to thearchitects was for two rooms which could be used for counselling ordiscussion with patients and/or relatives by day, but would then beable to turn into relatives accommodation at night. We are delightedto have achieved this facility together with a shower room forrelatives.

Main kitchen extensionOne of our main areas of concernwith facilities on the ward was theposition of two of our bedroomsdirectly opposite the main kitchen, ahive of activity and emission of foodsmells. Patients and families in theserooms often commented on the noiseand smell which made the alterationsa priority for us. We have nowextended the back of the buildingtaking all kitchen activities to a littlehub in that back area, and created anew entrance/exit to/from the wardhigher up the corridor away from thebedrooms. This has also freed up thesmall dining room on the ward for families to relax in when wantingto stay near relatives and when ‘The Green’ is not open in theevenings. This arrangement is working extremely well for everyone.

Building Project TeamWith funds not being available to cover the appointment of a ProjectManager for the building works, the Chief Executive, Rose Milnes,

enlisted the support of two Hospicecolleagues to help lead and managethe project throughout the 8months. ‘A busy and hectic time’ saysRose, ‘but so worth the extra effortput in by the team. Without thesupport of Karen Mullarkey,Operations and Facilities Managerand Ruth Garrett, Volunteer ServicesManager, we could not haveprogressed the whole project withsuch ease and minimal disruption. Mysincere thanks to them both’.

HOSPICE UPDATE

As winners of the Liverpool Echo Wish Campaign last year collecting186,000 tokens from within the community, we were very fortunate toreceive a £10,000 makeover from local firm Fletchrose Builders as firstprize. The makeover we chose was to have the paths to our main garden completely redone toallow access for all patients around the whole garden and to install raised flower beds toencourage patients and visitors to help with the gardens. Following this work we still neededto work on the gardens themselves and decided to leave this until the spring when thebuilding works on the Hospice would be complete.

These last few weeks we have had volunteers helping us with cutting back the bushes, creatingnew borders, planting, and generally tidying up the gardens ready for the summer. Aconcerted effort from some of our own volunteers together with a team from the Halifax outon a community service day ensured great progress was made.

The garden is an important facility for all our patients and their families and we aim to keep itfresh and tidy at all times but currently we need some more garden volunteers to help withongoing maintenance, planting and weeding. If you know of anyone who has a couple of hoursto spare each week please ask them to contact Ruth Garrett, our Volunteer Services Manager,on 0151 529 8389.

June this year sees the 5thAnniversary of the opening of ourInpatient Unit. Our 15 bedded ward was opened In June2009 transferring the Specialist PalliativeCare Inpatient service from Aintree Hospitalto the newly built ward at WoodlandsHospice Charitable Trust thanks to thegenerous support of the public in raising thefunds for the new building.

More than 1,300 patients have been caredfor in our Inpatient Unit over the last five years by our dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses,Therapists and other Allied Health Professionals and we are very proud of the service wehave been able to provide for all our patients and their families.

We thought it would be good to share with you just some of the comments we havereceived these last 12 months from patients and families cared for on the Unit.

5th Anniversary ofthe Inpatient Unit

“Thank youfor the wonderful care,

kindness, attention and timeyou gave us. Woodlands is ina league of its own. Please letall your staff and volunteersknow how very much wevalued their hard work,

friendliness anddedication”.

“To all, not forgetting volunteers. As afamily, thank you all fromthe bottom of our hearts

for looking after our mum.You looked after her sowell, you are special

people.”

“Since my stayat Woodlands I have

appreciated everything they have done for me. I feel

healthier because of good nursing, medication, food, doctors, physio,

hygiene, and pleasantsurroundings.I am grateful to Woodlands.”

Ongoing fundingThe charitable funding for all our services is adaily challenge and if you feel you could supportthe Hospice to continue its good work, wewould be delighted to receive your donation, however large or small, every single pennymatters so much to us.

“I am so grateful forall the skill, care and real belief in caring

for the person, not the disease, which is beingshown here all the time – in what you do as

individuals and as a team. It’s easy to be cynical, and I’m as guilty of that as the next person, butbeing here has changed that. Thank you for

reminding me that there is somuch good in the world.”

Page 5: Woodlands Hospice Newsletter July 2014

Woodlands Hospice ‘Tree of Life’was introduced in 1998, initially togive recognition for people’sfundraising efforts and donationsincluding donations in memory ofloved ones, by dedicating ‘leaves’to individuals or groups.Over time, as our services have grown andwe have gained considerably more supportfrom the public and community at large, andwith availability of ‘leaves’ on the Treebecoming more limited due to space, wehave needed to introduce a minimum sum

raised/donatedbefore being

eligible todedicate a‘leaf’ onour Tree.

Individuals or groups of people whofundraise or donate a minimum of £1,000 inany one year are invited to have a brass leafengraved and placed on the Tree.

Since the Hospice refurbishmentprogramme was completed, this veryspecial initiative has moved (retaining allleaves in their original position on the Tree)to a more prominent position in our new

Reception and is a source of great supportto so many people.

If you wish to work towards having anengraved leaf please contact Carole on0151 529 4143. We would bedelighted to hear from you.

Tree of Life

We alwaysappreciate the

generosity of each ofyou who support us

We look forwardto adding leavesto bring our tree

to life.
