The Hollywood DistrictThey don’t call it Hollywood for nothing. Actually, the name comes not from Tinseltown, but from the landmark Hollywood Schoolhouse—which is only appropriate, since this is where you’ll find some of the most educated palates in Washington State. Still, this is the most camera-ready part of Woodinville Wine Country, sitting right in the heart of the Sammamish River Valley. It’s a place to see and be seen, but in a decidedly Northwest fashion: easy, relaxed, North Face pullover optional. A place of patios, fireplaces, bike trails and pizzerias, but also home to 90+ rated wines, destination restaurants, and a gold-rated Condé Nast resort lodge. It all depends on what scene you’re into.

For wining and dining, Hollywood’s selection is definitely not out of Central Casting. There’s a staggering mix of large and lavish, micro and boutique. This is the crossroads where small, artisan wineries meet some of the biggest names in Washington wine. Eight-course dining is served right next door to tasty pub grub. Over 40 wineries surround Redhook Brewery, the state’s largest microbrewer. You get the idea. The only thing they all have in common is quality. Which brings us to perhaps the biggest irony of the Hollywood District: despite its glitzy name, this is home to some of the most authentic wine and food you’ll find anywhere.

The Warehouse DistrictLocated on the hill above Woodinville and Highway 522, the Warehouse District is a bit like the Meatpacking District of New York. This is a smaller, grittier, no-frills style of winemaking. The results, however, are anything but. And what it lacks in scenery and façade, the Warehouse District more than makes up for in vibe and taste. For wine, beer and spirits enthusiasts, there’s a density here that’s to die for. This is the home of more boutique wineries per square foot than any wine region in the world—right in Seattle’s backyard. Let that sink in for a minute, and then figure the odds you’ll find something here you love.

The Warehouse District has become such a popular quarter for winemakers that it’s spawned two adjacent neighborhoods: The Junction and Artisan Hill. The Junction forms the gateway to the Warehouse District with a clutch of stellar wineries sharing space with a trend-bucking craft brewery. It’s a taste island all its own, but also a great prelude to what awaits further down the road. Artisan Hill lies just south of North Woodinville Way as it winds up the hill. The name is all too fitting, as this burgeoning enclave

is home to a growing community of wine and food craftspeople. It’s bursting with distinctive flavors and characters, but it’s easy to miss, so be sure you don’t.

You’ll know when you’ve hit the heart of the Warehouse District because you’ll hear the buzz. With winemakers packed tooth-to-jowl, there’s an energy here that fuels both friendly competition and amazing cooperation. So much so, that you’ll often see wineries borrowing and lending equipment, expertise and manpower to one another—especially at crush season. It makes for an infinitely fertile environment for wine interpretation, spirits distilling and nanobrewing. This is where the person pouring is often the winemaker himself, and the personalities you’ll meet and the methods and opinions they share make the perfect pairing to any glass. You’ll learn as much about the process as you do about the palate. Then, for a completely different experience, simply take ten steps over to the next winemaker.

The Downtown DistrictWith so much happening all around Woodinville, you didn’t think downtown was going to sit still, did you? Truth is, if you haven’t been to downtown W lately, you really haven’t been there. With a bevy of new food and beverage offerings, it doesn’t just hold its own against the surrounding wine districts, it also makes an ideal place to begin or conclude your wine tasting journeys. No trip downtown is complete without a stop at that shrine to Northwest gardening, Molbak’s garden+home. After ogling the annuals, you’ll enjoy an amazing food and wine menu at their Garden Café, a tasty offshoot of nearby Russell’s Restaurant. Or cross the tracks to the north and find a huge selection of food and drink of the microbrew persuasion at The Collective. The food community here just keeps growing, with stalwarts like Pasta Nova and newer venues like Big Fish popping up all the time. With loads of delicious options, plus a winery all its own (Woodinville Wine Cellars), downtown Woodinville has blossomed into a lively, lip-smacking hub from which to explore in nearly every direction.

The West Valley DistrictIf there’s a new frontier in Woodinville Wine Country, it’s the West Valley District. Settled by a half dozen boutique wineries and distillers along the west side of the Sammamish River, this fast-growing district offers a more wide-open, relaxed atmosphere for your tasting travels. Hop on Woodinville-Redmond Road at the Hollywood Tavern and head north to find winem akers and spirit distillers nestled to the left and right. With fewer wineries, you’ll spend more time at each, and the simple pace pairs well with the complex flavors to be found, making for an experience that both stimulates and unwinds. It’s enough to work up an appetite, and you couldn’t pick a better spot for one. Circle back to the south and east, and you’ll find a veritable cuisine convergence zone: more eateries, pubs and restaurants within half a mile than you can shake a corkscrew at.

With over 100 wineries and counting, the only thing

more phenomenal than the growth of Woodinville

Wine Country is the explosion in local wine

enthusiasts of every description. In just over three

decades, Woodinville and Washington State have

become one of the world’s leading regions for fine

wine, and every year, more and more Northwest

residents are taking full advantage. We talked to area

wine enthusiasts, collectors, bloggers, and experts

about how they discovered the Woodinville wineries,

winemakers and wines that excite them most. While

their tastes, motivations, and backgrounds are very

different, they all share a passion for “Washington’s

Tasting Room” that’s thoroughly contagious.

Bruce and Allison Gruenbaum are lifelong wine enthusiasts. Literally. The two Seattle information-technology consultants grew up in Capetown, South Africa, where their appreciation for good wine started early. “Capetown is wine country for South Africa,” Bruce Gruenbaum says. “We literally grew up drinking wine. I’m not kidding when I say that. We literally grew up drinking wine.”

The Gruenbaums were married in 1998 in South Africa, where just four years earlier, it would have been illegal for the interracial couple to marry under Apartheid. When they left South Africa, they were determined to become U.S. citizens. Living first in Boston and then Los Angeles, they settled in the Seattle area in 2010 and became naturalized U.S. citizens on July 4, 2012 in a ceremony at the Space Needle.

Bruce Gruenbaum talked enthusiastically about the couple’s passion for wine.

What was one of your favorite wineries in South Africa?

“Definitely Boschendal. It’s an old, old estate built in the 1700s, and it’s been producing wine for over two centuries.”

When did you start discovering the wines of Woodinville?

“While working for Microsoft, we joined the Vintage Reserve Club (VRC) at Chateau Ste. Michelle. Initially, we would go to Chateau Ste. Michelle and spend most of our time there. Then we started exploring the rest of Woodinville and were astounded by how many good wines there are. It’s an incredible area.”

What other wine clubs to you belong to other than the VRC at

Chateau Ste. Michelle?

“We belong to wine clubs at Col Solare, Columbia Crest and William Church Winery. We also have memberships at Januik Winery, DeLille Cellars, and Brian Carter Cellars. We were there for the opening of the Bottega at Col Solare in Woodinville, and we absolutely fell in love with their wines.”

Do you favor reds or whites? What styles?

“We stick mostly to reds. We’re especially fond of Bordeaux-style reds. In fact, I’m OK with almost anything in the Bordeaux style. But also I’m a huge Syrah fan. Allison is as well. Syrahs are big in South Africa.”

Are there any Woodinville wines you’ve found to be

exceptional?

“Chateau Ste. Michelle winemaker Bob Bertheau has absolutely nailed his Cabernet Franc. I’m talking about the annual Cab Franc that we get as club members. It’s probably the best Cab Franc I’ve had anywhere. And his Cold Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best Cabernet Sauvignons anywhere in the world, without question.”

Do you collect wines? How many do you keep at home?

“We have two large wine coolers that hold about 300 bottles each. Our problem is that wine is meant to be enjoyed and not just saved. So we very seldom have either of those cabinets more than half full.”

Travel guru Anne Taylor Hartzell considers Woodinville one

of her favorite Northwest destinations. “With accessibility

to such premiere wines from across the state, Woodinville

is a hidden gem within the Seattle area,” Hartzell says.

"People don’t realize it’s only 30 minutes outside the city,

and you’re getting a great sampling of the best wines in the

Northwest, if not the country."

Known as Hip Travel Mama, the effervescent, Issaquah-based travel expert has gained a national following. Her mission is “to develop more connected, confident and culturally-aware families through travel.” Find her at www.hiptravelmama.com.

In addition to her regular segments on Q13 Fox Seattle, Hartzell has blogged for Expedia Viewfinder and appeared on the TODAY Show, USA Today, CNN.com, CN Traveler, Radio Disney, and many broadcast TV outlets throughout the country. She’s also been a brand ambassador for Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Expedia, Disney, Alaska Airlines and other travel and leisure companies.

What can viewers expect during your show on Q13?

“I share travel tips and inspiration for trips. I talk about a lot of local getaways because there are so many wonderful destinations around the Northwest.”

In Woodinville you’re known for your ultra-relaxing “Mamacations” at Willows Lodge. How would you describe the experience?

“It’s all about giving moms a break from everyday pressures with an overnight package of shopping, spa treatments, wine tasting and fine dining with chef Bobby at Barking Frog, as well as overnight lodging, and yoga and breakfast in the morning. It’s a great sampling of what Woodinville has to offer.”

You’ve done several successful Mama-cations since the fall of 2011. Will you do another one soon?

“Yes, I’ve been getting the itch to do another. There are so many more wineries now, and so many more options for sampling the best of Woodinville.”

You grew up in Oregon’s Willamette Valley—Yamhill County, to be specific—before it became a popular wine destination. When did you become seriously interested in wine?

“After graduating from the University of Washington, my husband and I took a trip to Napa Valley for our first real sampling of fine wines. I thought I might want to go into the wine industry and apply my P.R. and marketing background. So I went to the culinary institute and took a series of courses. I loved the people and their passion for wine and food. I never looked back.”

What are your favorite Woodinville wineries?

“My husband and I are really into robust red blends. I think that’s why we love Mark Ryan Winery so much. But also Amavi Cellars, , William Church, and DeLille Cellars.”

What do you admire most about the art of winemaking?

“These are people who work hard and are connected to the earth. They follow their passion and their craft. They’re really doing what they love.”

Do you have a favorite wine pairing?

Jason Smith Wine EnthusiastJason Smith is a wine-savvy computer consultant living on the East Side. He’s also a student at the Northwest Wine Academy, where he’s taking prerequisites for the winemaking program. His current collection of wines includes about 300 bottles, many of them from Woodinville wineries. He’s a big fan of the reds at Stevens Winery, as well as Fidelitas and Northstar.

What were some of your earliest experiences drinking wine?

“It probably goes back to when I was 18 or so. My uncle was a wine drinker. I remember snagging a few sips of wine here and there and not really liking it all that much—but wanting to like it. As I remember, the wine he was drinking was a Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon. As I got older, I started drinking White Zinfandel and kind of worked my way up from there to reds. I did the whole snobby thing where I drank white wines and then red wines, and at one point, all I would drink were red wines because that’s just what you did. Then all of a sudden I became a more mature wine drinker and realized, ‘Hey, white wines are pretty good too.’ Today I appreciate pretty much anything that’s fermented.”

How long have you been exploring Woodinville wineries?

“I've been going to Woodinville since probably the early 2000s, so I've seen the explosive growth of the industry here."

Do you have a favorite winery?

“I’m a big fan of Stevens Winery. Owners Tim and Paige Stevens do such a great job. They source great fruit from some wonderful vineyards, and in my opinion, Tim’s wines age so beautifully. I’ve been aging them for years. I’ve really come to respect his winemaking style and his ability to build just phenomenal wines that lay down well. He’s really talented.”

What are your favorite wines from Stevens?

“I always like their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. And their 424 Red Wine, a Bordeaux-style blend, is always good. Those are probably my two favorites. I also like their Merlot. I’m a big Merlot fan. The movie Sideways really did Merlot a disservice. It’s such a great grape.”

Mary Gutierrez is dean of language arts at Skyline College in San Bruno, California. She developed her passion for Woodinville wines while living in the Seattle area a few years ago and taking classes at the Northwest Wine Academy. Currently living in San Mateo, Gutierrez is less than two hours from Napa and Sonoma, but her interest in Washington wines, particularly Syrahs, is as strong as ever. Living near the heart of California wine country, she’s become an enthusiastic ambassador for Woodinville.

When did you become a wine buff?

“When I moved to Washington, my brother took me to a tasting at Esquin Wine Merchants. I think that was when I started to see that there was a whole lot more to wine than I had understood before. One of the wines that captured my attention was the DeLille Cellars D2.”

What are your favorites wineries in Woodinville?

“Two places I always go every time I’m in Woodinville - this is once or twice a year now - are Brian Carter Cellars and Dusted Valley. Each has Rhone-style blends and wines, particularly Syrah, which I think are just such an achievement in Washington wines. Washington Syrahs have a very special place to me, in both my cellar and my heart.”

Do you and your husband collect wines?

“We probably have about 150 bottles at home. When I left Washington State for California, I brought a lot of wines with me to make sure I had my favorites.”

What drives your wine purchases?

“Definitely food-friendly wines. We typically have wine every evening with dinner. So I’m interested in wine that complements the food and enhances the experience of the meal.”

What’s your favorite food and wine pairing?

“We tend to eat very simple food. But something that I keep coming back to, particularly because I love Syrahs, are lamb burgers with tomato jam, feta cheese and Syrah.”

What are your favorite areas to visit in Eastern Washington?

“One of the things I love about Washington is that it’s still relatively early in the development of the wine industry. When I go to Woodinville, I’m often going to the tasting rooms of places I love to visit in Walla Walla. What’s cool about Dusted Valley, for example, is that I had a chance to be in that tasting room when it was in the garage of one of the owners. My favorite AVA is Red Mountain and the Red Mountain, Tapteil Vineyard Winery is a phenomenal place. There’s a lot of Tapteil in our collection.”

How would you compare Woodinville to Sonoma or Napa?

Woodinville is fairly compact, which makes it great for visitors. It’s also very approachable, with down-to-earth people who are excited to talk with you about wine. Napa can be a little bit pretentious. Sonoma is more approachable than Napa, but when you’re in Woodinville, you’re always going to have a good time.”

SHAW VINEYARD SUPPLIES GRAPES FOR DOzENS OF WINERIES

Small but mighty, Red Mountain is one of Washington’s 13 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), a federal designation recognizing a growing region for its distinct geographic location that produces wines of unique character. The area is located on the eastern tip of the Yakima Valley in Benton City, about three hours from Woodinville. With an elevation topping off at 1,410 feet, these 4,040 acres of dry, desert landscape more closely resemble a beige tabletop than a red mountain. Raw and wind-swept, Red Mountain is an arid, southwest-facing mesa with rolling tumbleweeds and swaying sagebrush. Not an image that suggests prime real estate for wine grapes, but two Hanford engineers, Jim Holmes and John Williams, had a notion they could make something of the place in the early 1970s. And did they ever.

At a time when Washington’s wine industry was in its infancy, Holmes and Williams connected with Dr. Walter Clore, a professor at Washington State University studying the viability of Washington viticulture. Clore’s research suggested Red Mountain’s free-draining soils were ideal for grape growing. Deposited on a foundation of basalt rock, Red Mountain’s rich, calcium-carbonate soils were left behind in the wake of a series of cataclysmic geological events that moved through the area some

18,000 years ago. As Holmes and Williams would learn, these weak soils helped control vine vigor, forcing the plant to focus its energy on fruit rather than canopy production. In addition, Eastern Washington’s long, hot summer days and cool nights ripened the grapes beautifully without sacrificing natural acidity.

The colleagues planted their Red Mountain vineyard in 1975, farming together until the partnership came to an amicable end in 1992. Holmes went on to establish a reputation for Ciel du Cheval; Williams for Kiona Vineyards. Patricia and David Gelles, who helped Holmes and Williams with their original planting, established Klipsun Vineyard in 1982. These early sites, along with Red Mountain newcomers such as Obelisco, Grand Ciel, Red Heaven, Quintessence Vineyards and many more, have produced countless wines of celebrated terroir, that distinct character of place inextricably linked to the expression in the glass.

These are big, bold wines with a reputation to match. Qualties that led Doug Long, who retired to Washington State after 42 years in the Napa Valley wine business, to plant Obelisco Vineyard on Red Mountain. A visit to his Woodinville tasting room showcases the range of Cabernet Sauvignon styles the growing region can produce.

It may be Washington’s smallest AVA, but Red Mountain is making an impact on Woodinville winemaking far beyond its size. At just over 4,000 acres, this small mesa of vineyards produces dense, concentrated fruit for some of the most sought after wines in Washington State. No fewer than 16 Woodinville wineries source their grapes at Red Mountain, and the area’s reputation grows with each vintage. DeLille Cellars, one of Woodinville’s early superstars, is another Woodinville winery with estate plantings on Red Mountain. In 2001, DeLille partnered with Jim Holmes to plant Grand Ciel.

“Red Mountain is a well-defined, sun-drenched AVA that stands out with great Cabernet Sauvignon regions of the world,” says DeLille’s executive winemaker Chris Upchurch, a seasoned traveler of the Grand Cru wine-growing regions of Europe and California.

With such outstanding fruit quality, it’s not surprising that many winemakers are ramping up their focus on Red Mountain. Fidelitas Winery’s Charlie Hoppes is one of Washington’s most seasoned vintners. Last year, he announced plans to focus his winemaking on Red Mountain exclusively, sourcing from a varied selection of vineyards to create complex, flavorful wines that showcase the diversity of the growing region. “It’s our hope that a visit to the Woodinville tasting room will leave visitors feeling like they’ve taken a road-trip to Red Mountain,” says Hoppes.

A trip to Woodinville planned around the wines of Red Mountain is an excellent way to learn more about the AVA. If your tastes run to white wines, look for single-vineyard bottlings of Red Mountain Sauvignon Blanc. If seeking reds, expect to find Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, with rich layers of intense fruit combined with an appealing earthiness and robust character. Long before he became one of Washington’s top winemakers, Charlie Hoppes earned a degree in economics and went to work at Boeing as a flight test engineer. “It was a great job to start with out of college,” Hoppes says. “I really didn’t know what I wanted to do.”

But Hoppes, who had grown up in Wapato in a wine-loving family and picked grapes as a teenager, found the allure of winemaking impossible to resist. Encouraged by friends in the wine industry, he enrolled in the viticulture and enology program at University of California, Davis.

“I decided to go for it before my wife and I started a family,” he says. “So I walked away from my corporate job in 1985 and I’ve never looked back. Today, I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

In 1990, Hoppes went to work for Mike Januik at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, working there as winemaker for nearly ten years. Before starting his own winery, Fidélitas Wines, on Red Mountain in 2002, Hoppes consulted for a number of wineries, helping to launch Three Rivers Winery in Walla, Goose Ridge Winery in Richland, and Gamache Vintners in Prosser.

Hoppes has been intrigued by Red Mountain – where the ancient Missoula Floods played an important role in creating the AVA’s stunning landscape and unique terroir – since first visiting in the late 1980s.

Fidélitas will release its first red wine from the estate in 2015, and currently sources some of the AVA’s best fruit to create its distinguished wines.

Affectionately known as "The Wine Boss," Hoppes was chosen Winemaker of the Year at Seattle Magazine’s eighth annual Washington Wine Awards in 2013.

Reached by phone in mid-October at his 30,000-square-foot production facility in Richland, about 15 minutes from his tasting room on Red Mountain, Hoppes and his crew were in the midst of an unusually demanding harvest season.

It was a long, hot summer in eastern Washington. How did the weather affect this year’s crop?

I’m going to sound like a farmer, but it’s always about the weather. It’s been great, but I just think it’s almost been too good. This is

my 27th vintage in Washington and I’ve never seen the sugars this high. Ever.

Soaring temperatures led to a record harvest. How would you compare this year with other recent vintages?

It’s great. Everything gets ripe and big wineries like Ste. Michelle and Gallo can grow heavy tonnages and get it all right. Don’t get me wrong, we’re going to make some great wine from it. But we’re used to a 50-day harvest. Right now, I’ve still got 20 percent of the fruit out there and it’s all ripe. I’ve never seen that before. And it’s the middle of October?

Are you anticipating some exceptional wines from this vintage?

I’m always a little bit leery of overhyping a vintage until we get to that first racking and things have time to settle down a bit. Because with the higher Brix there are lower acids, and so you’re going to have to come back and even make some acid adjustments to get things back into balance.

Your production facility, a former beer distributorship in Richland owned by Stacie and Russ Hamilton, is currently producing wine for Fidelitas as well as Hamilton Cellars, Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, Market Vineyards, Frichette Winery, Telaya Wine Co., Gamache Vintners and Anelare. How has the facility helped the wineries you serve?

We’re able to do things on a small scale that help push the quality of our wines up a notch. So we’re doing a lot of small-lot roller fermentations and two-ton pump-overs. And open-top barrel fermentations. We’re continually trying to improve the quality of what we’re doing. This facility has given us the ability to do that, I think.

How significant were the nearly 10 years you worked at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates in the ‘90s?

In 10 years there I saw more fruit than a lot of people see in their whole career. Mike Januik was a great mentor. And all the other great people I got a chance to work with. The alumni association, in the grand scheme of Washington wine, is pretty significant when you look at all the people who have been through there and all the influence those people have had on the industry. It’s amazing what they’ve done and what they continue to do.

When did you get hooked on Red Mountain?

I remember the day because my daughter was born that night. It was June 11, 1989. We went to Lemberger Days at Kiona Vineyards. We tasted some of the wines and thought, "wow, this is really something." It didn’t seem to have a big future ahead. I mean, there was just a gravel road at that point. But we thought that someday it could be a special place. So I always kept my eye on it.

Woodinville is booming, with more than 100 wineries and tasting rooms. In 2013, you opened a new tasting room in the Hollywood District. But initially you were skeptical about Woodinville. Why?

It just seemed that it wasn’t as authentic as having a tasting room in the appellation itself. But you go to Woodinville and spend a Saturday afternoon there, and it just blows you away. Access to the consumer is really great. And getting the location we did was a no-brainer. It’s just really been great.

Your M100 wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, is named for your grandmother, Mary, who lived to be 100. Was she an inspiration?

She was small in stature and had an amazing work ethic. She was a hard worker all her life, very focused. Everybody in my family looked up to her. We didn’t name the wine after her until she turned 100. She never made a big deal about it, but she always had a bottle close by to show everybody.

Ron Zimmerman is proprietor of The Herbfarm, a 28 year-old restaurant with an ever changing menu serving a single seating for its nightly nine-course dining experience. The Herbfarm has been operating in Woodinville since 2001, and has its own organic farm and a hand-worked vineyard. It is one of only 47 American 5-Diamond restaurants.

Robert (Bob) Ramsay Harris is owner/winemaker of Robert Ramsay Cellars, a nine year-old winery nestled in Woodinville's warehouse district, and focused on Washington's terroir. Coaxing the best out of the grapes and crafting blends is their hallmark.

Ali (Alexandria) Boyle is marketing director of Alexandria Nicole Cellars, an estate vineyard and family winery that opened its first tasting room in 2004. Its Woodinville location is in the Hollywood Schoolhouse.

When did you first know you were destined to own a restaurant or a winery?

Ron: While in my 30’s, I was given a copy of The Auberge of the Flowering Hearth. It is the story of how the author pitched tracing the origins of Green Chartreuse liqueur to Esquire Magazine and soon found himself in a remote valley in the French Alps. He was housed at a local inn run by two women who cooked only with ingredients from the valley that were in season. I, too, was taken by the idea and went to France to find the Auberge. Alas, it had closed. But I returned with a deep desire to create such a culinary haven here in the Northwest.

Bob: My mom went back to school when I was 10, and my dad and brother started eating Cheerios three meals a day in her absence. That just wasn’t going to work for me so I taught myself how to cook. At 19 I had a bottle of Côte Rôtie, and I thought to myself, “Holy !@#$, somebody made this and now I have to try to make something this good in a bottle!” I think that was the moment I was destined to own a winery.

Ali: When my husband, Jarrod, told me. While away for a girls’ weekend, he wrote a business plan. Can’t leave that guy alone for a minute!

What has been the biggest challenge for you personally as an owner of a restaurant/winery?

Ron: There have been a number of adversities that could have ended the restaurant over the years. Bad economies. Burst bubbles. Wind damage. Flooding. Destruction by fire. Incomprehensible bureaucratic delays in building permits. Near bankruptcy on more than one occasion.

Bob: Sustained devotion is required to create truly great wine, and I am hopeful that my devotion will lead me to achieving that goal some day.

Ali: Learning how to compete in the retail arena. There is always more you could or should be doing, so I guess it is “creating harmony” so that we’re not working all the time. Thankfully we have an amazing A-team.

What drew you to base your business in Woodinville?

Ron: Had our original Fall City restaurant not burned to the ground, we might still be there. But the loss of nearly $1 million made it evident that we would have to move on. Woodinville is a nexus for wine, and that association has been beneficial.

Bob: Wineries often succeed in groups and there are many good reasons for that. First of all, you begin to create a destination for people to visit multiple wineries in one location. I think the other less obvious answer for folks outside the industry is that small wineries are families and those families group together into tribes to help each other. We support the other wineries in our tribes.

Ali: Again, Jarrod. He’s insightful. I drug my feet, but he’s totally fine with dragging me along!

What three words would you use to describe the Washington Wine industry?

Ron: Diverse quality wines.

Bob: Undiscovered. Potential. Walkabout.

Ali: Longitude. Latitude. Perfection.

What is your favorite activity to do at work?

Ron: Finding ways to enhance the story of food and wine to our guests.

Bob: There are so many details that are enjoyable. Owning a winery and making wine is enjoying those details, like cleaning. Fifty percent of winemaking is cleaning. If you don’t get some pleasure out of washing 5 bajillion stainless steel tri clamp fittings a year, then you may not like winemaking.

Ali: Hands down, it’s meeting tasters! When I need a pick me up, I go pour wine. It always does the trick.

When not running your business, what do you most enjoy doing?

Ron: Almost everything we do has some bearing or relationship to the restaurant – cooking, preserving the flavors, working in our vineyard, or traveling to restaurants or wine regions in this country or overseas.

Bob: Family is really important to me. I have a beautiful wife and two gorgeous and mischievous daughters. However, given a little space from all of it, I love music and playing the piano. Salt water and being on it regenerates my soul, even just getting on a ferry. I grew up racing sailboats and cruising in the San Juan’s and Canadian inland waters. It is my one true home. I love going to Baja Sur and kitesurfing when I can as well.

Ali: Hanging out with my hubby and kids. We can end up doing just about anything and I’m happy. Boating, skiing, biking, or eating.

Where do you like to bring out of town guests to show off Woodinville?

Ron: Well, The Herbfarm for starters. Chateau Ste. Michelle is a must visit, what with its grounds designed by the Olmstead Brothers and the fact that it has supported the Washington wine business from the ground up. Now that we are in charge of the Hollywood Hill Vineyard, the one-mile trip up there is a nice bookend to a true wine experience.

Bob: Giving folks a good look at the wineries and winemaking in the "hood" (warehouse district) is always our first activity. You have to show off your own stuff, right? Then I like to stay at Willows Lodge, eat at the Barking Frog or The Herbfarm, and catch a concert at Chateau Ste. Michelle. That is a trifecta worth hitting.

Ali: Usually I start off at our tasting room and then give them a map of walkable wineries to peruse on their own. Depending on the length of stay I recommend Willows Lodge and Barking Frog, or we finish up with bites from the Hollywood Tavern.

What is your favorite item in your establishment?

Ron: As one gets older, the idea of “favorite” anything falls away to an appreciation of the beauty of diversity.

Bob: I have a soft spot for the Mourvedre-based wines we are making (Mourvedre and Par la mer), but I’m most excited right now about the Grenache based wines (Grenache, Le Mien, and La Previa).

Ali: Our Estate Grenache-based Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a big wine. Intense, which I love.

What brings a smile to your face every time you see it?

Ron: Have you ever bought a 100-year-old one-of-a-kind terracotta fireplace from a mansion on the Atlantic coast and transported and rebuilt it out here? Well, 3,000 pounds and much sweat and treasure later, it blazes in the Salon of our restaurant.

Bob: I love large format barrels. We have gotten to a point where we don’t buy much new oak and it is all large format 500 liter French puncheons. Less new oak has forced us to become better winemakers and has helped define our signature, looking for the fineness and greatness in Washington terroir.

Ali: There is a three-part picture of our own estate vineyard, Destiny Ridge, overlooking the Columbia River. So beautiful. Still takes my breath away, and I also have to laugh about the bill for the photographer. We were so naive.

Where do you dine out?

Ron: Pubs. Café Juanita. Michelin 3-star restaurants in Europe, San Francisco, and New York.

Bob: I’m a fan of lots of places that couldn’t possibly all be mentioned here. Bottom line, I just love good food. Recently we have eaten at Place Pigalle, Palace Kitchen, Matt’s in the Market, Walrus and the Carpenter, Terra Plata, Paseo, and La Bodega.

Ali: I love food so I try to make the rounds wherever I am, but for dinner in Prosser definitely Wine O Clock, in Tri Cities usually Anthony’s, and in Seattle… I try to never eat at the same place twice! Too many amazing choices. But I am an incredible sucker for the sticky buns from Specialty’s bakery in Seattle. That’s a stop I don't like to miss!

What is your favorite meal to fix at home?

Ron: Just like the restaurant, I cook without a preconceived notion. I go to the store every day, buy some ingredients, and conceive of the menu while I cook. When at home, Carrie, my wife, and I dine by candlelight every night that I cook.

Bob: I like to cook fast and hot as well as low and slow. Not much in the middle. On the low and slow side, I love to slow roast pork shoulder or ribs. On the fast and hot side, I like to sear pork loin with lots of flaked chili peppers and then finish with a pan sauce of white wine, cream, lemon, and brown sugar.

Ali: I love to barbeque. Steak, chicken, veggies. But my all-time favorite meal to fix at home is Thanksgiving dinner. Something about roasting a turkey that makes me feel pretty amazing. To drink in the white category I am lovvvving our Riesling. I know Riesling has gotten a bad rap, but this is not the Riesling of the

past – this is a bright, clean wine with just enough acid to make it refreshing (not overly sweet). As for reds I can’t seem to get enough of our Tempranillo. It’s complex enough to pair with steak but elegant enough to pair with light meats and even salads. Smooth with a peppered velvet undertone that is downright yummy.

What are you currently reading?

Ron: North American Pinot Noir by John Winthrop Haeger, and Historic Heston by Heston Blumenthal.

Bob: I’ve recently read a couple of novels by Pat Conroy and am currently reading a book by Richard Ford called Canada. I tend to read on planes or right before I sleep to get my brain thinking about something that has nothing to do with my life. I have to get it blank so it can sleep for a few hours.

Ali: I just visited our daughter in Alabama and decided to use the flights to enjoy some terrific magazines that I haven’t been able to get to. The Atlantic is a favorite. My mom turned us onto it. Terrific content! Another magazine I love is Fast Company. Every time I read it I take away a couple tid bits that I can use at ANC. The book on my bedside table that’s next in line is No Greatness without Goodness by Randy Lewis.

Yashar ShayanIf you haven’t visited Woodinville lately, it's time to start planning your trip. In some ways it’s still the same Woodinville, retaining it's original charm - and in other ways, it’s a whole new town! There are new wineries, yes, but what really stands out is the new style of wine being made here.

My current favorite variety is Syrah. Generally speaking I don't pick favorites - I just like well made wines, regardless of the grape - but Syrah in Washington State is really kicked up right now. There are so many varying expressions, from the big and lush styles, to the elegant and earthy iterations, being produced from all corners of the state. Syrah is one smooth customer when bottled on its own, and it plays exceptionally well with others when blended alongside different grapes; and not just Rhone grapes, Syrah blends beautifully with Bordeaux grapes too.

It's versatile and easy to enjoy.

Pico de Gallo1 cup honey1 Walla Walla sweet onion, diced2 cups seeded Roma tomato concasse½ cup roasted poblano chilies, peel after roasting, seeded and diced1 tablespoon white wine vinegar½ bunch cilantro, chopped2 garlic cloves, minced1 jalapeño, remove seeds and rib, then dice1 teaspoon ground cuminJuice of one lemon Juice and zest of one orange

Prepare ingredients as directed, combined all and toss well. Marinate in the chiller for one day. Season to taste and toss again before serving.

Halibut CevicheFor Halibut Ceviche, simply add 1 pound fresh diced halibut and ¾ cup lime juice to the pico de gallo recipe and marinate for 4 hours or overnight in the chiller. Serve with chips or just eat with a spoon.
