When Ira and Susan Woodin headed up the Sammamish

River in 1871, their dream was to build a cabin, log timber,

and farm cattle along the river’s fertile banks. Woodinville,

the town they founded, developed from a logging

homestead to rich farmland and eventually a railroad hub to

the East. As the Seattle metropolitan area grew, Woodinville

became a popular suburb that today spurs a different kind

of growth.

While the vines that drive the growth of the Washington

wine industry are firmly planted east of the Cascade

Mountains in Washington’s many AVAs, Woodinville

grows something equally important to the development of

Washington wine. Here, interest and passion are piqued

to grow into a love and appreciation for Washington wine.

Half of Washington State’s 6.9 million people live within

the Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellevue metro areas, making

Woodinville perfectly positioned to bring Washington wine

to Washingtonians.

Winemaker Chris Gorman of Gorman Winery tasting his award-winning Chardonnay

It all started nearly forty years ago in 1976, when Chateau Ste. Michelle established Woodinville’s first connection to Washington wine.

Woodinville wineries have produced seventy-five different wines that have scored ninety points or better by various wine publications.

Woodinville has become a destination in its own right. Thirty

minutes from Seattle, Woodinville has it all: cycling the Sammamish

River Trail, enjoying a fantastic dinner at Russell’s Restaurant &

Loft or The Herbfarm, or relaxing at one of the renowned summer

concerts in the Chateau Ste. Michelle concert series.

“It was genius, really. To do that forty years ago, a working winery

that wasn’t located near its vineyards — it was new and it was

remarkable,” says Ted Baseler, CEO of Chateau ste. michelle. “If

you look at the Willamette Valley, it’s a short drive from Portland.

The Napa Valley is forty-five minutes from San Francisco.

Woodinville fits a very similar model.”

The idea had its early detractors. “I think they thought that we’d

see maybe fifty thousand visitors the first year and then it would

dwindle, yet we see two to three hundred thousand guests each

year,” continues Baseler. “Woodinville, like those other two

American wine locations, really can serve as the doorway to

Washington wine.” Chateau Ste Michelle began with the idea that

Woodinville sets the stage to drive interest and appreciation for

the wines and wine growing region of Washington. “I really believe

that in time, they’ll get out there to experience the vineyards and

see where the wine is coming from. I think of it this way: from

Woodinville to Walla Walla.”

Woodinville has seen tremendous growth in recent years. The

state’s industry now boasts over eight hundred wineries, and

Woodinville has grown from just a half dozen or so wineries in the

1990’s to more than one hundred wineries and tasting rooms today.

Scenic vistas from the deck at Castillo de Feliciana.

Created by photographer Richard Duval, this 26-foot mural is the focal point of Columbia Winery’s revamped tasting room.

In addition to the wines being produced here by

Woodinville stalwarts like Brian Carter Cellars

and DeLille Cellars, the rest of the state has come

to Woodinville. Chad Johnson and Corey Braunel

of Walla Walla’s Dusted Valley, have found that

Woodinville has done a lot for both their brand

recognition and relationships with Washington

wine drinkers. “We opened our tasting room doors

in Woodinville in 2009 and it quickly became an

amazing way to expose our Estate wines from

Walla Walla and our other Washington wines to

a population that may have never ventured to our

little town,” said Braunel. “Since then we’ve seen

real, measurable growth from people who have

discovered Dusted Valley in Woodinville and then

taken the next step to visit us in Walla Walla.”

With more than one hundred tasting rooms and wineries, Woodinville offers an opportunity to sample the array

of wines that are being produced in the state. Wines coming from all of the state’s thirteen AVAs (American

Viticultural Areas) are produced in Woodinville wineries or show up in Woodinville tasting rooms.

In Woodinville it’s possible to “follow the grape” across so many of Washington’s different growing regions.

The fruit from each region is unique, which results in varying examples of each wine. If you’re a Cabernet fan,

Woodinville lets you tour the state’s great Cabernets without having to drive across the mountains. Cabernet

from Red Mountain vineyards, like the powerful Cabernets grown at Ciel du Cheval or Klipsun Vineyards, can

be found in wines from Betz Family Winery and Sparkman Cellars. If you fancy a Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet,

Januik Winery has a wine from Champoux Vineyard that fits the bill.

Navigating Woodinville Wine CountryWoodinville as a wine destination breaks out into four different districts: the West Valley District, the Hollywood District, the

Warehouse District and the Downtown District. All four areas are close to one another but each has a distinct look and feel.

The beauty of Woodinville and these four districts is that you can concentrate on one area at a time on any given visit, or hop

from district to district looking for specific wineries.

Up CLOsE: WAREHOUSE DISTRICT

The Woodinville Warehouse District demonstrates how and

where the entrepreneurial spirit of Washington wine lives and

breathes. The wineries operating in the Warehouse District are

largely production facilities where you can witness the processes of

wine production as well as sample the final product in the wineries’

tasting rooms. It is the perfect incubator for up and coming wineries

and home to some of Woodinville’s veterans, including Baer Winery.

The warehouses of Woodinville offer visitors an opportunity to

come into the workshops of the craftsmen and craftswomen of

Washington wine. Sandwich board after sandwich board mark the

way through the labyrinth of tasting rooms and production wineries.

The Warehouse District is highly walkable and offers a wide range

of wine styles within a few minutes of one another.

Chad and Corey of Dusted Valley sum it up best:

“Woodinville has truly become a destination to explore

Washington State wines. You can literally taste a little

something from every AVA in the state. Plus, with more

and more tasting rooms, restaurants and hotels popping

up, it’s exciting to see the community maturing and

providing people with an authentic wine experience.”

Make the short drive from Seattle and be home at a decent

hour at the end of the day. Or come and stay at the famed

Willows Lodge, the quaint meritage meadows inn, or

the serene matthews Estate house Bed & Breakfast.

Woodinville offers all the amenities one would expect to

find in a classic American wine destination: fine dining,

casual eats, and some of the finest wines to be found in any

region around the world. See for yourself. WWC

WOODINVILLE: Washington’s Tasting Room

Up CLOsE: HOLLYWOOD DISTRICT

The Hollywood District is home to over thirty wineries and tasting

rooms and is where Woodinville visitors can taste the state of

Washington. The Hollywood District is where Woodinville got

its start with Chateau ste. michelle, the founding winery in both

Woodinville and the state. It also illustrates the industry’s growth

and variety as wineries from Prosser, Red Mountain, and Walla

Walla (heck, even the Willamette Valley) have all set up shop in

the Hollywood Hill area. The landmark Hollywood Schoolhouse

anchors this district, which is loaded with tasting rooms, wineries,

roundabouts and wonderful restaurants. Hollywood is also close

to the West Valley District, a small district with three wineries and

tasting rooms.

11WOODINVILLEWINECOUNTRY.COM

Forget what you know about Washington wines when

approaching the whites and rosés at these suggested tasting

rooms. You’ll find outstanding Grüner Veltliner, Rousanne,

Semillon, and rosés made from Cinsault, Mouvedre, and

Tempranillo, in addition to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

These wines pair well with spicy Thai food, buttery shellfish,

grilled fish, or just the sunset.

In Woodinville’s Hollywood District, tasting rooms spread out

from the traffic circle like spokes on a wheel. Pop into Sparkman

Cellars for This Old Porch Rosé, made from a different blend

of grapes every year—often including Malbec, Merlot, and

Cabernet Franc. Across the parking lot, DeLille Cellars is making

more wine in one varietal than most others make in their entire

portfolio. In this instance, however, being big doesn’t mean

sacrificing quality. If available, grab a glass of Rousanne, made

from grapes from the famed Ciel du Cheval vineyard on Red

Mountain. After 20-plus years, winemaker Chris Upchurch knows

the best Washington grapes and what to do with them. Other

wineries are making Rousanne, but this might be my favorite.

Hot summer days beg for cool, refreshing wines. Who are we kidding though? In the Pacific Northwest, any day above 65 degrees is an excuse to enjoy a crisp white wine or aromatic rosé.

WHITES & ROSéS Summer Wines

and Sunshine

Just down the road, Lauren Ashton Cellars is tucked

into the back corner of a renovated old home. There’s a

nice patio and garden outside the tasting room. Inside,

taste the old-world style Chardonnay and off-dry rosé.

They’ll make you feel more like you’re sitting at a sidewalk

café in Provence than in the suburbs of Seattle. Owner

and winemaker Kit Singh is busy balancing his dentistry

business with his nascent winery. The road he’s taken to

winemaking is a winding one, but we’re glad he landed in

Woodinville. A quarter mile away, you’ll find Castillo de

Feliciana, located in a cheery yellow house perched above

the roadway. They’re offering one of the few sparkling

wines in town, in addition to Albariño and a Rosé of

Tempranillo. On weekends, food trucks are parked out

front, the patio area has plenty of seating and there’s live

music most Friday nights.

Head across the valley and swing into the sleek and

contemporary Novelty Hill Januik. The patio area includes

plenty of seating and a popular bocce court. It’s the

13WOODINVILLEWINECOUNTRY.COM

perfect location to wind down with some of the excellent

whites, including Rousanne, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier,

that veteran winemaker Mike Januik makes year after

year. Continue up the hill, where JM Cellars is located

in a renovated mid-century modern home on a stunning

property once belonging to two horticulturists. They

nurtured the grounds for years, making it their own private

arboretum nestled in the hills. Inside, look for Viognier, and

Rosé of Mouvedre or Rosé of Cinsault.

On the other side of town, the Warehouse District is home

to dozens of wineries and tasting rooms. You can park once

and taste hundreds of wines. Add WT Vintners to the top

of your list, where they’re making one of the few Grüner

Veltliners in Washington. Winemaker and co-owner Jeff

Lindsay-Thorson is a sommelier by night, but by day, he’s

making a Rosé of Mouvedre, in addition to the Grüner

Veltliner and the winery’s red wines. Just down the road

at EFESTĒ, it’s a steep uphill climb to the tasting room,

but you’re rewarded with rosé made with 50% Cabernet

Sauvignon and 50% Syrah, in addition to a crisp and

refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, and a medium dry Riesling.

And nearby is Gård Vintners, which gets its name from the

Norwegian (as well as Danish and Swedish) word for “farm.”

Scandinavians aren’t known for their winemaking, but their

descendants are. The Lawrence family has been farming

the Royal Slope in Washington’s Columbia Valley for nearly

50 years. They make Viognier, a Rosé of Grencache, and an

ice wine from Riesling grapes harvested after the frost. Be

sure to check out their Freyja blend, named for the Norse

goddess. It’s a blend of Viognier, Roussanne and Pinot Gris.

There is no right or wrong answer to the question, “What’s

your favorite winery in Woodinville?” There’s something

for everyone, whether you want a respite from the rain or

sun (most likely the former), or you’re looking for a wine to

bring home, or to crack open after a long ride or walk on the

nearby river trail. WWC

WHITES AND ROSéS

Perhaps it’s little surprise that the Cabernet Sauvignon

grape is so well represented in Woodinville’s tasting rooms.

It recently became the most planted varietal in Washington,

with over 10,000 vineyard acres across the state. You’ll find

plentiful opportunities to explore the grape in many forms

– and from a range of AVAs – on a tasting tour around

Woodinville.

Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerhouse grape that has

enough character and structure to stand alone as the

sole varietal in the bottle, and it plays well in blended

wines. It also has prestige, commonly associated with top

Bordeaux and Napa Valley wines. (When you see a red

wine referred to as a Bordeaux-style blend, it’s a pretty

safe bet that Cabernet Sauvignon will be among the grapes

used, if not the prominent varietal.) In fact, this grape is

largely responsible for some of the early recognition that

Washington wines began to garner on the national stage a

few decades ago, not to mention the source of some of the

most expensive wines in the state.

FOLLOW THAT GRAPEA Tasting of Cabernet SauvignonBy Cynthia Nims

But that doesn’t mean you can’t feel comfortable uncorking

a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon for a casual Tuesday night

pasta dinner with friends. From among the great range of

choices and price points on your tour, you can choose the

perfect Cabernet Sauvignon to suit most any wine-drinking

occasion.

You might begin your tour in the flourishing Warehouse

District, where Elevation Cellars is among those showcasing

the state’s top varietal. Their signature wine, Monolith, is

a Bordeaux-style red blend that varies a bit year to year,

though always is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant. Elevation’s

Cabernet Sauvignon bottling bears a Columbia Valley AVA

designation and offers a great representation of the grape’s

bold character. A 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon reserve

wine is due to be released soon.

Heading a bit south to the bustling Hollywood District,

a number of wineries explore the breadth of Cabernet

Sauvignon’s potential. At both Fidelitas and Adams Bench,

for instance, you’re likely to find Cabernet Sauvignon both solo

and in blends, not to mention different vineyard-specific bottlings

to sample those geographic influences.

Of course, each Cabernet Sauvignon wine has its own distinct

character and personality, but some of the more common flavor

attributes of the grape include black currant and other dark fruits,

warm spices, hints of coffee or chocolate, light floral tones and

small doses of cedar. These wines tend to be rich in color and

aroma, with good acid balance and moderate to lush tannins.

Among the AVAs you’ll be able to sample as you follow that

Cabernet Sauvignon grape through Woodinville are Horse

Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Walla Walla Valley,

Yakima Valley and Columbia Valley. Stylistically, you’ll find the

grape bouncing between old and new world influences, with a

range of oak treatments (French and American, new and old)

and reflecting the experiences of dozens of talented winemakers.

All of which ensures that your tour will be a most intriguing and

delicious one. WWC

On a typical Friday night in Woodinville, the inviting sounds of

live music waft through lounges and tasting rooms from one end

of town to the other.

At Village Wines in the Hollywood District, a buoyant, multi-

generational crowd is buzzing with conversation when 24-year-

old singer-guitarist Robbie Christmas opens his set with a stirring

version of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl.” People take notice,

and soon they’re making requests. “I’ll play any song as long as it

isn’t Christmas music,” he says with a grin.

Christmas (yes, that’s his real name) is engaging, edgy, and

fun, offering classic songs by the Eagles, Eric Clapton, Coldplay,

James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac, and other iconic artists. Pairing

live music with wine has become increasingly popular in

Woodinville, home to more than 100 wineries and tasting rooms.

“All the wineries in our complex have featured music in the last

two months,” Tim Bowen of Village Wines notes cheerfully.

“I believe that live music offerings will just continue to grow.”

At nearby Columbia Winery, singer-songwriter Carly Calbero

performs a spirited version of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison

Blues,” as well as an original song from one of her EPs. Down

the street at Fireside, the plush bar at Willows Lodge, acoustic

folk band Side Project plays James Taylor’s dreamy, nostalgic

“Copperline.” And Mairin & Friends, who mix rock, blues, R&B

and jazz, play to a large crowd as part of the “Friday Night Live”

series at Matthews Winery.

In the fall of 2010, Matthews Winery was among the first to

book live music during extended tasting room hours, with light

fare provided by food trucks. “The idea was that people would

stop by after work or after dinner to enjoy some live music and

a glass of wine without going through the tasting lineup,” says

Diane Otis at Matthews. “We thought if we extended our hours

a little longer, we might capture more people.”

Woodinville is also home to bucolic Bear Creek Studio, where

the Lumineers, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Brandi Carlile, James

Brown, Eric Clapton, and many others have recorded.

Long before there was a recording studio or wineries with live

music, Woodinville made Northwest music history with the

raucous Seattle Pop Festival in July of 1969. It’s hard to believe,

but the lineup at Gold Creek Park featured such now-legendary

acts as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, It’s

a Beautiful Day, Santana, Ike & Tina Turner, Tim Buckley, The

Youngbloods, Chicago Transit Authority, and others. Local

residents complained about traffic and the festival’s “hippie

atmosphere.” But the event spurred a lifetime of memories.

It was years before major concerts returned to Woodinville.

Chateau Ste. Michelle, which built its French manor-style

winery in 1976, began offering summer concerts in 1984. Now

in its 30th year, the popular series opens June 13 with Allen

Stone and continues through the summer with shows such as

Sarah McLachlan on June 21, John Legend on July 28, Ringo

Starr & His All Starr Band on July 16, ZZ Top and Jeff Beck on

August 9, Earth, Wind & Fire on August 23, Peter Frampton and

Buddy Guy on August 24, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons on

September 12, and Crosby, Stills & Nash on September 13-14.

Concerts have been so successful at Chateau Ste. Michelle

that last winter the winery offered Sessions, its first indoor

concert series. The intimate February-April series featured such

performers as Naomi Wachira, EntreMundos, Tim Wilson and

Bradford Lewis, Big Sur, and acoustic folk trio Hannalee.

In addition, a number of festivals and special events offer an

abundance of music in the warmer months.

The 2014 Celebrate Woodinville Summer Event Series at

Wilmot Gateway Park includes a Fourth of July celebration

and Wednesday evening concerts July 16, July 23, July 30 and

August 6, as well as the second annual Woodinville Festival

on August 16. Each event features live music, local wineries,

breweries, restaurants and food trucks.

The Tastes and Tunes Warehouse Summer Kickoff, featuring

wine and food tasting and a lineup of local jazz artists, is July

26 in the Warehouse District. The Hollywood Block Party, an

end-of-summer event showcasing local cuisine and wines, is

September 19. The event includes small bites, wine tasting at

more than a dozen wineries, and live entertainment.

At the many Woodinville tasting rooms and lounges that

offer live music, the focus is on music that complements the

tasting experience, from pop, folk and jazz, to blues and soft

rock. “Our goal is to provide an opportunity for people to

linger a little longer and enjoy our wines with some really fun

music,” says Otis at Matthews Winery.

The doors had barely opened one Saturday morning

when the kitchen began to stir at Novelty Hill Januik.

baking in the fiery brick oven began to drift into the

elegant, modern tasting room. Savvy sipping regulars

know the drill well and order their pizza as soon as

they arrive, while newbies follow suit when those

gorgeous charcuterie- and cheese-topped pies appear.

Welcome to wine tasting 2.0, where casual fare is

offered at several tasting rooms around Woodinville,

making for a rich sip-and-sup experience.

While this ever-expanding wine-producing region is

home to a growing number of innovative restaurants,

cafes and diners—not to mention the world-famous

Herbfarm—many wine tasters have come to

appreciate the on-site winery dining options.

It’s now possible to experience a moveable feast: a

progressive meal over the course of a day that might include

pizza, panini, and sumptuous sweets. Or, why not splurge

on a multi-course meal? Hit a “Wine Wednesday” Happy

Hour? There are also a myriad of opportunities for special

events such as weddings, reunions, and corporate get-

togethers in partnership with the area’s premier caterers,

party planners and decorating specialists, all dedicated to

pairing perfectly with Woodinville wine.

Chateau Ste. Michelle—the industry leader in so many

ways—was one of the first to serve food. Culinary director

John Sarich has been on board for nearly three decades,

helping guide the evolving dining options, which include

special, custom-created menus for small groups and large

parties. Those catered affairs must be booked in advance,

but planned gatherings are rewarded by spectacular food

and wine pairings. “We’ll pull wines that are only available

at Chateau Ste. Michelle, including older vintages from our

library,” said Sarich, also the author of several cookbooks.

menu monthly, sharing the updates on the winery’s Facebook

page. On weekends, multi-course, full-service meals are also

available.

Woodinville wine country stalwart, Alexandria Nicole

Cellars features occasional feasts, usually tied to a holiday.

The annual Mother’s Day brunch has become a tradition

for many club members, as has the pig roast happy hours

which appear on the winery’s event calendar at various times

throughout the year.

At least two lucky Woodinville wineries benefit from their

prime location next to the Station Pizzeria. While sitting on

the sunny patios or sipping in the tasting rooms of Patterson

Cellars or Gorman Winery, you can choose from a variety of

entrees, gourmet pizzas and appetizers, which are delivered

to your table from the casual Italian restaurant next door.

Hit one of these tasty tasting rooms or make the rounds.

Either way, it’s going to be a delicious, filling day. WWC

For visitors who prefer a grab-and-go option in order to take

full advantage of the picnic possibilities on the stunning

grounds at the historic Chateau Ste. Michelle, there’s a new

panini menu that’s proving to be very popular. While the

featured fillings change frequently on these toasted-to-order

sandwiches, there are typically a couple of meaty choices

showcasing savory charcuterie along with a vegetarian

selection. An Argentinean chorizo with caramelized onions,

roasted peppers and chimichurri sauce is one of the best

sellers, followed closely by white cheddar, tomato and arugula

pesto.

In the Warehouse District, Covington Cellars has an

ambitious culinary program that includes a creative á la carte

pairing menu filled with savory snacks such as duck confit

nuggets, warm crab and spinach dip, and sizzling hot lamb

meatballs alongside cooling tzitziki. All dishes are created to

accompany Covington’s single varietal wines, many of which

are vineyard designated. Chef Julie Bergstrom mixes up the

The Herbfarm: Carol Hook21 Acres and Willows Lodge: Shannon Borg

At seven a.m., the gardens of the Willows Lodge

in Woodinville are quiet. Head Gardener Teresa

Sciglibaglio leads me along the winding paths that

surround the boutique hotel, showing some of

garden designer Dan Robinson’s additions, including

a 20-foot-tall snag in the driveway’s circle. This snag

(the shell of an old, downed tree) is here to show

what used to grow in this area.

Farms, wineries and agricultural history find a place as agritourism grows in Woodinvilleby Shannon Borg

sUsTainaBLE WOODinViLLE

Most of the old-growth cedars are long gone, replaced by farms

and homes. But many people in this community have fought to

retain open green spaces and agricultural land in Woodinville

and the Sammamish Valley, embracing a new era of agritourism,

spurred by visitors who want to connect with producers and

growers of their food. In Woodinville, farmers, chefs, winemakers,

and distillers are busy connecting the dots. For instance, Patterson

Cellars crushes about eight tons of grapes each year for Patterson

and other wineries. They send grape stems and skins to Cedar

Grove, an organic compost company with a location in Woodinville,

creating a sustainable, closed-loop cycle.

WOODINVILLEWINECOUNTRY.COM26

The Herbfarm 14590 NE 145th Street, Woodinville (425) 485-5300 www.theherbfarm.com

In the case of The Herbfarm, the “butterfly’s wings”

that created epic change happened the day in 1974

when farmer Lola Zimmerman set out an extra chive

plant on the road to her Fall City farm to share with

neighbors. From that simple act, The Herbfarm

grew into a culinary center, and eventually a world-

famous restaurant. Special menus, such as June’s

Silver Spoon or Nine Songs of Summer, focus on the

freshest seasonal products, herbs and composting,

while encouraging diners to deliver their leftovers

to Basil and Borage, the resident pot-bellied pigs.

One package, the “24-Hour Experience,” includes

accommodations at Willows Lodge and a chance

to visit The Herbfarm’s nearby farm, help the crew

harvest and deliver produce to the restaurant kitchen,

and watch the staff begin to create the evening’s

masterpieces. Now that’s farm to table.

21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living 13701 NE 171st Street, Woodinville (425) 481-1500 www.21acres.org

Another place where all these elements come

together is the 21 Acres Center for Local Food and

Sustainable Living in Woodinville, whose mission is

to “accelerate social change toward more sustainable

ways of growing, eating and living.” The center

seeks to be just that – a hub of green education and

practices, with a farm, farm market, and a commercial

demonstration kitchen where the farm’s bounty is

processed into fresh food-to-go, and classes and

events are held. More than just a field with rows

of vegetables, the farm takes a holistic approach,

preserving the agricultural heritage of this land with

an orchard, an apiary and trails through protected

wildlife habitat. Built green, the center itself is a LEED

Certified Platinum structure, a “living laboratory”

to educate visitors about sustainable building.

This new trend in agritourism is making old-

school farm life accessible to food and wine

lovers, children and those who want to learn

more about environmental stewardship and

sustainable agriculture.

Willows Lodge 14580 NE 145th St, Woodinville (425) 424-3900 www.willowslodge.com

Basil and Borage may be the luckiest pigs in the

world, getting leftovers from The Herbfarm’s

table, but they also look out on some of the

stunning gardens at the Willows Lodge, where

Sciglibaglio and her team keep the grounds

beautiful and healthy for pigs and people. Nestled

on the banks of the Sammamish River, Willows

Lodge boasts “rustic-chic” rooms with views of

a series of gardens. Carefully-shaped Japanese

maples and sculptures of heads surrounding a

pond are part of what Sciglibaglio calls a “closed

loop” system, where nothing is wasted and

chemicals are not used. “Everything is composted

here, so we’re building our garden soil with

waste from the garden.” Barking Frog, the

lodge’s premier restaurant, features an incredible

selection of local and international wines to

accompany Chef Bobby Moore’s fine Northwest

cuisine, including wild-caught salmon, Northwest

oysters, scallops and elk. A jumping off point for

wine and food lovers to experience local wines,

food and agricultural beauty, Willows Lodge

is setting the stage for the future of the valley.

From the reclaimed logs used to create structure,

to a 300-year-old bonsai, these gardens are

reminders that attention and care pay off in huge

ways, creating communities we want to live in and

share with others.

The Green Vine

Growing up in the suburbs as a daughter of sheep herders and saddlemakers who moved their gardens to the city after World War II, I learned to love good, homemade food from my family, but didn’t see a farmers market until I discovered Pike Place Market in the late 1970s. Since then, an epic shift has transformed many in our culture into “foodies” with the mantra “where does our food come from?” Later to the party is the wine world, where the focus for decades has been vintage and grape variety before the French concepts of “terroir” and vineyard origin changed the way Americans look at wine. Over a decade ago, we started to see a few labeling and certifications—organic, made with organic grapes, biodynamic,

“Salmon-Safe”—on wine labels. But as a new wine lover, I was confused —as many wine lovers may be—about what all this meant.

I found, for instance, that Certified Salmon-Safe, just one of the many sustainable labeling certifications, means the vineyard has been inspected by a third party to confirm they follow Salmon-Safe practices, i.e., protecting and restoring salmon habitat by planting trees on streams, growing cover crops to control run-off and applying natural methods to control weeds and pests. This is why I wrote “The Green Vine: A Guide to West Coast Sustainable, Organic and Biodynamic Wine,” (Mountaineers, 2013), to find and feature wineries with a dedication to sustainable practices, whether it be to organic or biodynamic farming, energy conservation, or raptor, owl, or salmon habitat restoration.

The main thing to keep in mind when choosing sustainable wines is that not every wine from a winery will be produced the same way. Most Washington wineries source grapes from several different vineyards. Some, such as Abeja, Amavi, Chateau Ste. Michelle, Novelty Hill Januik, Pepper Bridge, and

DeLille Cellars, have estate vineyards or manage the way the grapes they source are grown. A winery may have one Salmon-Safe wine, another LIVE certified wine and a third with no certification at all. This doesn’t necessarily mean the non-certified wine is not grown sustainably; a farmer may grow without chemicals, but choose not to get certified. This is why we should all learn more and ask questions. If you find wines you like, find out more by talking to winemakers and researching them online. Just like organic labels on food, these certifications offer a starting place.

This exciting direction in Woodinville challenges winemakers and winegrowers, farmers and chefs, builders and engineers, to actively forge a path that will ensure this community and others like it will thrive—and enjoy great wine—well into the future.

MARK RYAN WINERY has been producing premium,

hand-crafted Washington wines in Woodinville since

1999. Specializing in Bordeaux-style red wines from the

state’s premier AVA, Red Mountain, Mark Ryan has been

consistently among the most highly-acclaimed wineries

in Washington State.

“An estate that’s getting up into the creme de la creme of

Washington State producers...the wines have overall classical

profiles, with bright acidity and tannin, that never lack for fruit

or depth. If you haven’t tried these wines, now is a great time

to check them out.” Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Sleep, Swirl, Savor

Matthews WineryEstate House B & Bis the perfect wine country escape.

Picture this: you’ve just polished off your last tasting

of the day, a 2012 Wild Eye Syrah from the Mark

Ryan Winery in Woodinville. It’s been a full afternoon

exploring some of the more than 100 area wineries,

but it feels like you’ve just scratched the surface. Your

friends are excitedly swapping notes on their favorite

finds of the day, strategizing on how to squeeze

in another tasting room. “Don’t forget, we have

tomorrow,” someone reminds the group. You smile

to yourself, relishing the fact that you’re away for the

weekend—and it isn’t even halfway over yet.

Getaways like this are the kind we remember and

savor. The kind we need more of, if only they were

easier to plan, more convenient and affordable.

Bothell’s Sip and Stay packages are an effortless

option for couples or groups who want to make a

weekend out of wine tasting. Go at a leisurely pace and

stay for the night just minutes away in the charms of

Bothell.

Sip and Stay packages include complimentary tasting

for two at over a dozen Woodinville wineries, a night

of lodging at one of eight nationally-branded hotels

in Bothell and a dining discount at Russell’s, one of

wine country’s culinary gems. Located in a delightfully

restored barn, Russell’s specializes in Northwest

cuisine perfectly crafted by Chef Russell Lowell.

If shopping’s more your style, consider Bothell’s Shop

and Stay packages. Explore more than 500 stores in

the area, including 50 locally owned boutiques with

one-of-a-kind items, including jewelry, antiques, gifts

and regional art. Packages offer a night of lodging, a

dining discount at Russell’s, and savings at Seattle and

North Bend Premium Outlets.

While you’re in town, check out Bothell’s many natural

gems as well. Go two-wheeling on the Sammamish

River Trail, paddleboard from the Park at Bothell

Landing, take a leisurely stroll through the antique

shops of Country Village. Then end your busy day with

a visit to one of the local distilleries for a spirits tasting,

which is quickly becoming Washington’s new tasting

adventure.

Come fall 2014, you might find yourself rounding out

the day at Beardslee Alehouse & Wildwood Spirits.

Celebrated Seattle chef and proprietor John Howie will

open this new, highly anticipated alehouse and distillery

located in The Village at Beardslee Crossing in Bothell.

Expect a local “farm to table” philosophy with a menu

featuring homemade comfort food, including burgers,

brats and flatbreads along with a dozen craft brews.

Whatever your vacation pleasure, Bothell offers an

boutique stores and so much more.

Chateau Ste. Michelle was the first winery to open in Woodinville. Almost forty years later, more than 100 wineries and tasting rooms operate in Woodinville, making it one of the premier wine tasting destinations in the nation.

East of the winery estate stands the historic Hollywood Schoolhouse built in 1912. Today, it’s a premier wedding and special events facility, housing a wine tasting room along with a collection of historical artifacts which can be viewed when events are not scheduled.

To learn more about the history of Woodinville, stop in at the Woodinville Heritage Museum housed in the relocated home of early Woodinville residents John and Ellen DeYoung. The Dutch Colonial home was designated a city landmark in 2010.

The museum displays rotating exhibits featuring the history of the greater Woodinville community and is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The rest of the year it is open the first Sunday of the month from 1 to 4 p.m.

Look around any community, and you’ll find local gems to visit, whether they are established, well-known businesses or places steeped in history. Woodinville has many such gems.

Woodinville was named after Ira and Susan Woodin, who arrived to homestead in 1871, having moved all the way from Seattle.

Woodin Creek Park is named after the founding family.

More families soon settled the area once a railroad line was extended in 1888. By 1920, the region was dotted with dairy and produce farms, including the 200-acre Hollywood Farm owned by Frederick Stimson.

Stimson, a successful lumber baron, eventually expanded Hollywood Farm into a 600-acre enterprise that became one of America’s best dairy farms of its era. Located in the heart of the farm was a large Craftsman-styled house built as a vacation home for the Stimson family.

That home (now called Manor House and listed on the National Register of Historic Places) and the impeccably-gardened grounds surrounding it are part of what became Chateau Ste. Michelle winery when it opened in 1976. The home is now used for special events.

Historical and Community

The heart of downtown Woodinville is NE 175th Street. Locals consider it the town’s main street. Anchoring the west end is the historic Woodinville School built in 1909. Now shuttered, it was the first brick building east of Lake Washington.

Next to the school is Carol Edwards Center, named after the woman many refer to as “The Mother of Woodinville.” Edwards moved to Woodinville in June 1976 and was very active in the local community until succumbing to ALS in 2007.

Edwards founded the town’s weekly newspaper, the Woodinville Weekly, and was instrumental in establishing many annual events in town, like the farmer’s market and parade as well as organizing the Chamber of Commerce and Teen Northshore, a nonprofit group that supported youth activities. The Carol Edwards Center is used for recreation and activity programs available to the community throughout the year.

Further east along 175th Street is Molbak’s garden+home, a garden and home improvement mecca. The Molbak family emigrated from Denmark to Woodinville in 1956, bringing with them a passion for gardening and a desire to turn that passion into a business. More than 55 years later, Molbak’s has become one of the premier home and garden destinations in the Northwest. Customers will find top quality plants, gardening supplies, home décor and a café on their sprawling grounds. WWC

Featuring Q & A with Sommelier Jeff Lindsay-Thorson of W.T. Vintners and Chef Russell Lowell of Russell’s

Restaurant and Loft

AT The TAbLe With Woodinville Tastemakers

How would you describe your role at RN74?It’s a long list, but in short, my role is to elevate the guest experience through great service and bring synergy to the food and wine selections. From the moment I get up, I am communicating with co-workers, vendors and guests to make sure we are always a step ahead in executing a flawless dining experience. The time between sunrise and dinner service is not all that glamorous; I haul a lot of heavy boxes, edit our wine list and educate our team in all facets of our wine program—from the nuances of a new wine we’re pouring by the glass to broad brush strokes about a particular region.

You were recently awarded Sommelier of the Year by the Washington State Wine Commission. What does the award mean to you? It’s a great honor to be recognized by my peers in the industry and the Washington State Wine Commission. The past winners represent the best of the best in the Washington wine business; I am proud to be counted among them. My hope is that the award will bring recognition to RN74 as a place to discover the dynamic wines from Washington State and experience top-notch wine service.

You hold many certifications as a sommelier and you are studying further. What’s next for you?I am in the midst of the Master Sommelier certification which is proving to be down-right masochistic! I’ve passed the service portion and have two sections to go before I sit [for exams] again in Aspen, Colorado.

JeFF LIndSAy-ThoRSonSommelier at RN74 and Owner-Winemaker at W.T. Vintners

Jeff Lindsay-Thorson is an amazing juggler. He’s the full-time sommelier and wine director at RN74, Seattle’s top-notch, French-inspired restaurant, one of 19 in the Michael Mina portfolio of restaurants. He is studying for the elusive Master Sommelier certification, and he is co-owner and winemaker at W.T. Vintners in Woodinville. If you can’t find him doing one of these things, look for him wrangling one (or both) of his twin children. We caught up with Lindsay-Thorson to talk about how he does it all.

Why did you decide to become a winemaker?I wanted to be a better sommelier. I thought to myself, “You could read until the cows come home, but what better way to really have a deeper understanding of the process than to actually do it?” So, in 2005 I went down to Oregon to work harvest for a small now defunct Pinot Noir producer in McMinnville. It was absolutely eye-opening and inspirational. In the following years, I worked in Washington and then traveled to Burgundy and New Zealand to further hone my skills.

You chose Woodinville as the location for your winery. What made you decide to start here?We have been in Woodinville since day one. The community of wineries and winemakers is amazing, and there is no way we could have the continued success we do without the support of our neighbors. We have steadily grown and are represented by the best wine programs in Washington. We wanted to reach a wider audience and have more direct interaction with the people drinking our wines. Sommeliers and restaurants around the state continue to be amazing ambassadors for W.T. Vintners, and it was important to us to share our story and passion for wine directly with our customers, both new and old. The tasting room has proven to be the perfect way to do that.

What positive changes do you see happening in the wine scene in Woodinville? Woodinville continues to grow into its new identity as a wine destination. Word on the street is that a couple of hotels are going to break ground soon! This is going to be huge for all of us in the community. Wine lovers visiting Seattle need a place to stay closer to the wineries for safety as well as to help drive commerce. I am extremely optimistic for the next stages in Woodinville.

What is your favorite summertime food and wine pairing?A little shameless self-promotion here: our Grüner Veltliner pairs well with local Dungeness crab. Chef David Varley at RN74 created an amazing crab pasta dish after tasting the Grüner.

Visit TableTalkNorthwest.com or WoodinvilleWineCountry.com for an extended interview with Lindsey-Thorson, plus a recipe from RN74 chef David Varley that pairs perfectly with WT Vintners 2010 Grüner Veltliner.

RUSSELL LOWELLExecutive Chef & Owner, Russell’s Restaurant & Loft

Russell Lowell is executive chef and owner of two Woodinville area restaurants: the casual Garden Cafe at Molbak’s and the elegant and classic Russell’s, located in a beautifully-restored 1920’s barn. His lifelong passion for food began when he was a small boy, exploring the mangrove swamps of Cuba, catching fish and hunting small game. Over the next 35 years, Lowell traveled and worked extensively in numerous high-end restaurants across the nation. He set roots in the Seattle area in the mid-1990’s and became one of the first chefs to adopt a “green” culinary philosophy, using fresh produce and products from Washington farms and purveyors.

What is the first thing you ever learned to cook for yourself and how old were you? It was a rainbow trout when I was eight years old. My Aunt Hilda taught me to fish and then how to clean and prepare the fish.

What person (people) most influenced your decision to become a chef?My mom. I grew up cooking with her and learned how to feed my five brothers. As a teenager, I learned techniques from a variety of chefs when I worked in restaurants in Los Angeles.

Dinner grow and bring in major support to help fight cancer. Last year, we were able to partner with Chef Rick Bayless to host a dinner in the Loft that raised over $25,000. At my Elk Camp, guests are treated to a multi-course, wild game dinner paired with fine wines and stories in a cozy, walled tent in the forest. Ten camps will be held this year, each raising somewhere between $5K and $20K for various charities.

You were recently awarded Best Independent Restaurant of the Year by the Washington State Wine Commission. What does this award mean to you? We are so honored to win this award from the Washington State Wine Commission. We truly love the relationships we have with the wine community and work every day to promote the passion and love of wine, as it really is such a complement to our food. For our guests, the award means that we will work even harder to bring forward great events and showcase even more Washington wines. Our hope is to continue to broaden our guests’ exposure to new wines from our state while still featuring the classics and veterans in the industry.

Other than Washington, what is your favorite wine region? If I had to choose an area outside of Washington, I would choose Bordeaux. Washington makes great Bordeaux-style wines though, so I am never at a loss for fantastic wines to enjoy.

What would people be surprised to know about you? I’m learning to play the violin. In between work and going to the range to shoot guns and practice with my bow, I can sometimes squeeze in a lesson with my violin teacher. I also surf. I love the thrill. And when I have the chance to travel, I go all out!

Russell’s building is so unique. What made you seek it out and establish your restaurant and event space there? I am constantly on the lookout to find interesting and unique places. The barn is stunning, though it’s off the beaten path. When we were opening the restaurant, many people said they didn’t think we would make it in this location, and yet here we are! We have to work a little harder for people to find us, and our goal is for guests to come back because of the quality of the food and service and the value they get. Many people call this a “hidden gem,” and I kind of like that!

How do you work with the local wineries? We have been in this community for many years and have a great relationship with the local wineries. A majority of our wine list features local Washington (Woodinville) wines. We allow our customers to bring in their first bottle of Washington wine with no corkage fee. We host many winemaker dinners and promote our neighbors through our wine list and other events. We are also proud that on most nights you can find winemakers and owners dining in the restaurant; they are always happy to visit a guest at their table!

You have done an incredible amount of charity work. What are you most proud of?I am very proud that so many different organizations have been helped over the years. I am most proud of my work with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. I have been on the Chefs Advisory Board for over 20 years and watched the Premier Chefs
