The Woolworths upport Ofce is locatedin the new Norwest Business ark, NorthWestern ydney. The development, completedby Woodhead, includes masterplanning of theGreeneld site, three commercial buildings,3-4 storeys in height totalling 36,000m2 ofofce space set out in a horizontal campus, allconnected via a 2,500m2 central marketplace.

The brief set by the client was to culturallyunite the disparate support operations for thecompany, therefore providing one building

for all people, yet still allowing for highlevels of amenity, accessibility, comfort, andbusiness efciency in a human scale responsewhilst connecting all staff, centralisingtraining facilities and creating a unitedworkplace culture. The cultural statement ofthis consolidation process is evident in thebuilt result where the ofce oorplates andmarketplace encourage staff to communicateand interact, formally and informally.

The masterplan evolved around the idea of

public space and streets, with the centralmarketplace being the rst element to takeform.

The hybrid-ventilated marketplace combinedoff-the-shelf components in an innovativefashion to achieve a cost effective andsustainable solution. The resulting greenhouseratings achieved Australian industry best-practice.

Externally the faade and form have beenarranged to blend with the planted landscape-scale of Australian Eucalypts, of which severalhundred have been planted.

tormwater is harvested from all ofce roofsand collected in one storage dam at the lowerend of the site. This water is reticulated toparticular landscaped zones for irrigation, withany overow being diverted to the riparianzone on the eastern boundary.

    the idea othe vertical

    metropolis andits integrationinto Chinese

    culture.

As the pressure to provide increased modernhousing and commercial buildings intensiesaround the globe, an increasing number ofcities are looking at tall buildings as potentialsustainable solutions.

Eco_cape, is a research project exploringthe design and construction of environmentallyfriendly tall buildings in Chinese cities. Theproject is a practice embedded, collaborativeproject devised by Woodhead in partnershipwith Arup, and Chinas Tonji niversity and

Beijing niversity. The Eco_cape project aims to produce adynamically responsive vertical village that canintegrate into Chinese culture. It is designed tointeract positively with the environment, reducerather than increase carbon emissions and takeadvantage of free energy sources to providecomfortable and sustainable living and workingspaces.

Eco_cape seeks to produce a sustainable,site-specic tower that can be used as a

benchmark for future projects. It will have to bevirtually self sufcient, include power generationfrom wind turbine and photovoltaic solar cells, combined with low energy heating/cooling/ventilation systems to produce maximumgain for users and minimum impact on theenvironment.

sing digital based modelling systems enabledexploration into areas such as wind design, structural efciency and speed of construction, aesthetic impact on sunshade and shade,

maximising human spaces at ground level. EDinitiatives are co-ordinated into the design fromthe outset aimed at a zero ecological footprint.

    and renewal.

The ATO has leased two new builidngs in Civicto consolidate a number of their locations inCanberra and meet their stated objectives.Woodhead was comissioned for the interiordesign and workplace planning for 4200 staff,as an integrated interior design working withthe architects commissioned for the buildingsarchitecture.

Designed to accommodate future change;the planning is robust and exible, usingurban planning principles that allow staffto move through the ofce spaces easily

and comfortably. Notions of streets, lanes, interconnections and town squares drive thelanguage and forms of the overall design, encouraging communication and interaction.

Open workspaces are broken by communalparks creating an opportunity to meetinformally in a green-scaped casualenvironment with urban timber seating.

The concept of leaves and their changingcolours, reecting Canberras four distinct

seasons, forms the basis for the graphics andcolour palette, with overlaid signage andway-nding enabling staff to easily identifyareas.

This three-level 9,200m building, known as

Alpha, is the rst in the new erth Airport ofcepark development, hkew.

hkew Alpha is an innovative ofce buildingdesigned with the central core accommodatingall services, entry lobby, meeting rooms andcafe and connected to two large open oorplates allowing maximum exibility. The designprocess gave consideration to the structuralgrid creating a clean internal perimeter.

Both oorplates are oriented to face 10

degrees to the north and south to give thebuilding good passive solar performancewhich is enhanced by sunshading on the northfacade. East and west facing facades havereduced fenestration protected by a dramaticperforated metal sunscreen. The cafe andmeeting rooms open to a central landscapedcourtyard, enhanced by a water feature andartworks.

erth Airport occupies the 1,330m top oor ofhkew Alpha. The key focus from the onset of

this project was to achieve maximum efciencyof space with the client investigating manypossibilities of open plan design.

The conceptual design was established aroundcolours associated with blue sky, yellow sunand the grey of the tarmac. This colour paletteis reected in the rened materials and nishesof the public areas, while bolder colours wereused in the staff break-out areas.

The nal design outcome is to increase thecommunication and interaction in the 100%open plan ofce space, to ensure ultimateexibility in the future.

The heart of the Water Corporation facility

The purpose of the space was to integrategeographically disparate sections of thewater procurement and delivery process.undamental to this was the successfulintegration of teams, enabling them to maintain

their individual function whilst promoting betterintegration with their colleagues. The layoutand spatial organisation needed to providea solution to this specic objective resultingin a circular oor plan which provides a verypractical solution from a functional perspective.

Transparency and visibility is also reinforcedthrough the design, intended to promote acollaborative space. election of materialand detail selection was driven by task andfunction. loor, wall and ceiling treatments

When the spirit-based company ernod Ricard

merged with wine-makers Orlando Wyndhamin 2005, the result was an integration of twodistinct areas within the industry, namely theclassic and the contemporary. Woodheadsinterior design of ernod Ricard acicsnew corporate ofce at North Ryde deliveredan inviting and welcoming result whilst alsoreecting the union of these industry opposites.

With a tenancy located over three contiguousoors, the incorporation of a focalcommunication stair was one of the rst

design elements to be considered. lanningthe locations of the reception, main break-outareas and coffee bars across the three oorsaround this focal stair, allowed the stair to befully used and encouraged staff communicationand interaction.

The clients brief was for the design to reectthe organisations values and promote aproactive, dynamic, successful and convivialbusiness culture. A design concept wasdeveloped that would display warmth akin to

stylish upmarket bars whilst reinforcing theircorporate identity. The use of solid timber, timber veneer, and recycled timber throughoutthe space assisted in achieving these results.

The bar, breakout area and kitchenette all openoff the reception area, creating a large, vibrantspace displaying the products that makeernod Ricard the second largest wine andspirits company worldwide.

derived from detailed studies into acoustics. The internal space of the lecture theatrewas sculpted to optimise natural voiceamplication. The theatre space was thecatalyst for the project and as such, it is theheart of the building.

The building has a strong graphic presenceon the campus thanks to use of colour anddistinct yet subliminal signage. The foyerattached to the lecture theatre is an integralpart of the building and functions as an

intermedian lter between the theatre andexternal surrounds. Through the expansiveglass faade, the foyer has a strong visualconnection with the forum space and thelibrary beyond.

The forum, nestled between the lecture theatreand library, is protected from the elements andinvites users to take advantage of the space, allowing for formal and incidental interactionand communication. tudents are encouragedto engage with soft and hard landscape

elements and to use it as a meeting place, recreation space and event space.

A building which is at once an alienpresence in the townscape and yet so deeplyembedded it provides the necessary impetus forthe redenition of the town.

Knowledge has become the cornerstone ofsuccess in todays competitive environment. The brief for the new ingapore National

The design philosophy is centred around theidea of connections. Connection of the userto the library and knowledge. Connectionof the library to the community as a whole.Connection of the various elements ofthe building to each other and ultimately, connection of the National ibrary and

ingapore to the world.Encompassing all these ideas is nexus, which describes the design philosophy for theproject. This is encapsulated in the seven-storey book wall running through the core ofthe building. The book wall is constructed fromaluminium and glass, and acts as a divisionbetween front of house and back of house.

Other elements of the interior design includemulti-coloured ED lighting and a rare bookslibrary, designed to meet the requirements
