ideas and experiences with us over the years through theinternet and personal contact.

    PREFACE

Over the past 28 years of carving and furnituredesigning Marie and I have gathered tremendous amounts ofknowledge and skill learning from master craftsman the worldover, from the shores of Africa to the jungles of Honduras,to the depths of the Black Forest in Germany, and EasternEurope, with their historical cultures steeped in tradition. We

have taken all of this knowledge combined with a littleCanadian flair and are now putting pen to paper to ensure thisknowledge is passed on to future generations of woodcarversand woodworkers.

    1. In this short e-book we will be looking at creating yourown unique and decorative coasters. This is a very simpleprocess and can be done by using the scrap stock in yourshop. The old theory Waste not ..want not would apply to

this project. I personally use all my scrap wood for smallprojects such as coasters and cutting boards. In other words,I waste nothing in my shop; it either provides a project orprovides heat (LOL).

    Stock And Equipment Required

    2. The stock part of the project is the easiest. What youneed to start with are slices of a variety of mixed species ofwood 1/8 to 1/2 inch thick. For example; Oak, Walnut,Mahogany, Pine, Birch, Ash, Cherry and any other mixedwoods that you want to use. The plan is simple-you want tomix up the colors so this will provide you with colorful designsand patterns in the wood.

    Getting Started

    3. Ive broken this down in to stages to assist you in thecreation of your coasters.

    1. Slicing your material and or stock. Iuse a table saw. I take a scrap that wascut off another project and slice it into1/8, 1/4, 1/2 inch thick with a minimumof 8 inches in length. These sticks arewhat you are going to use to build the

coasters. Now, once you have several sticks made youare ready to start. Personally I have several hundred on

hand at any one given time. This allows me to pick thedesign I am going to use.

    2. The next step is to laminate your sticks into the pattern you

have selected. As you can see below your pattern possibilitiesare endless.

    3. Now once your lamination is done and has dried for 24 hrs itstime to cut your slabs down to size. You do this by using athickness plainer on each board. The idea is to plain down the

board to inch thickness, or if you want, any size between to thick. Any thinner than that and you will have a breakageproblem. Any thicker and the coaster looks like a big slab ofwood and not a coaster.

    4. When you have cleaned up the board down to the size youhave selected its time to cut it to size. I do this by using a

bandsaw and cutting the coasters into perfect circles. Using a

Jig I designed to cut perfect circles helps. Of course you couldmake square coasters if you so desirer.

    a. Step 1: Make a template or jig to assist you in makingyour coasters. You do this by cutting a small inch squareplywood sheet the same size as your band-saw table top. Then

make a cut three quarters the way through the plywood sheet. This cut will allow for the band-saw blade to run freely. Now youneed to measure off 1- inches or half the size of the coasterthat you want to make. Put a nail through the plywood and thencut off the head of the nail. You do this so when you place downthe jig it doesnt get caught up in the band saw table.

    b. Step 2:Next, once you have made the jig, youclamp the contraption down on top of the table. Ensure

that it is secured down with clamps.

    c. Step 3: Place the soon to be coaster down ontop of the jig with the edge against the band saw blade, then push down on the wood so it forces the nail up intoyour project. You do this so the project does not move

    Nail point showing above the

Table saw cut that allows the band

    saw blade to move freely.

around but rather spins and creates your perfectlycircular coaster.(see photo above)

    d. Step 4: Now turn on your band saw and spin the

    project.(see below).

    5. Now that youve cut the perfect circles and or squares, its time to give it a good sanding using a 220 grit to

round off all of the edges.

    Finishing Your Project

    4. I will give you several options to choose from, but thebottom line is that you will be placing wet-hot items on yourcoasters so a good hard finish is what you need. I would

recommend one of the following finishes. Each has its owncharacteristics and durability. You will have to make your owndecision on which one you will use.

    a. Tung Oil

    d. Wax

    Safety Equipment Recommended

    5. I recommend that you follow the manufactures safetyrequirements for each tool or chemical you use and always usesafety glasses, work gloves and hearing protection whenworking with earsplitting loud tools.
