Do You Matter Online? Yes!But you have to break through the noise!
• Know your audience• Have a plan• Be authentic and helpful• Know what success and failure looks like
Let’s take a look….
Who are you talking to?Personas
• Who are they? Demographics?• What do they need from you?• Is it more than one thing?• Are there groups for this?• Can you develop more than one persona?
Don’t assume, know your audience!
A useful exerciseTell me about Brad…
• Pick one client or target.• Briefly list their demographics.• List 3 things they need from you.• How can you deliver that to them?
Be there in their time of need!
Who are the rock stars?• Who are the power players in your industry?• How are they influential?• Can you engage them directly?• How could you build and leverage a
relationship with an influencer?• Who influences Brad?
Rock stars are just people! Connect!
What’s in it for them? Why would these target users want to connect with you?
• Are you an expert offering information they can’t easily find
elsewhere?
• Are you providing access to curated content in a way that is unique?
• Are you providing solutions to their problems?
• Do they trust that you will be the resource they need?
• Are you real???
Are you an expert?Yes, yes you are!
“Your goal should be to help as many people out as possible.
That’s the mark of a true industry expert in my opinion.”
~ Neil Patel, Digital Marketing Rock Star
What’s your plan? Are you creating and curating content for your audience?
• Write regular blog and guest blog posts
• Share articles found through Google Alerts, blog subscriptions, influencers
• Post long form content like white papers, eBooks, presentations
• Produce and post videos – instructional, educational, fun
• Develop an email newsletter
It’s “Utility Content!”Content your audience devours…
• How-to videos• Thought provoking posts• Tools, references, studies• Problem solving content• Timely and up-to-date content
Utility content makes you a hero to your audience!
Is this a two way street? Are you shouting at people or engaging with them???
• Read posts and comment
• Comment on influencer blog posts
• Share audience and influencer posts
• Review and recommend books
• Say thanks to those who share your stuff!
What does success look like?Likes, fans and followers are not true indicators
• Engagement is more important
• Sharing, retweets, comments show engagement
• Engagement builds reach and increases traffic
• Track, encourage and improve upon activity that
leads to traffic, connections, recommendations
It’s not about the tools! It’s the people, man.Tools can’t build a car and roads are useless without traffic.
• Digital marketing is about people, engagement, and measurable
outcomes.
• Channels will change! Make connections where the audience is.
Books/authors I highly recommend…
