Clean Up

Grease left over from the manufacturing processmay be on the various parts of the lathe. It is rec-ommended to clean this grease off with a solventcleaner or citrus-based degreaser such asGrizzly’s G7895 Degreaser. Avoid chlorine-basedsolvents as they may damage painted surfacesshould they come in contact. Always follow theusage instructions on the product you choose forclean up.

Many of the solvents commonly used toclean machinery can be highly flammable, and toxic when inhaled or ingested. Alwayswork in well-ventilated areas far frompotential ignition sources when dealingwith solvents. Use care when disposing ofwaste rags and towels to be sure they donot create fire or environmental hazards.Keep children and animals safely awaywhen cleaning and assembling thismachine.

Do not use gasoline or other petroleum-based solvents to remove this protectivecoating. These products generally have lowflash points which makes them extremelyflammable. A risk of explosion and burningexists if these products are used. Seriouspersonal injury may occur.

Site Considerations

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine without lim-itation. Consider existing and anticipated machineneeds, size of material to be processed througheach machine, and space for auxiliary standsand/or work tables. Also consider the relativeposition of each machine to one another for effi-cient material handling. Be sure to allow yourselfsufficient room to safely run your machines in anyforeseeable operation.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to handlecombined motor amp loads. Outlets should belocated near each machine so power or extensioncords are not obstructing high-traffic areas. Besure to observe local electrical codes for properinstallation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Make your shop “child safe.” Ensure thatyour workplace is inaccessible to young-sters by closing and locking all entranceswhen you are away. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting oroperating equipment.

All die-cut metal parts have a sharp edge(called “flashing”) on them after they areformed. This is generally removed at thefactory. Sometimes a bit of flashing mightescape inspection, and the sharp edge maycause cuts or lacerations when handled. Please examine the edges of all die-cutmetal parts and file or sand the edge toremove the flashing before handling.

SECTION 4: ASSEMBLY

Beginning Assembly

Most of your Model G8691 Wood Lathe has beenassembled at the factory, but some parts must beassembled or installed after delivery. We haveorganized the assembly process into steps. Please follow along in the order presented here.

TOOLS REQUIRED: A metric socket set, 6"adjustable wrench, and Phillips® head screw dri-ver.

The stand consists of 8 pieces; 4 legs and 4 sta-bilizer bars. With the included bolts, washers andnuts, assemble the 4 stabilizer bars to each of the4 legs, being certain not to fully tighten the assem-bly at this time.

With the stand pieces together, use a bench orstand to place the lathe unit upside down asshown in Figure 2. Attach each of the 4 legs tothe base of the lathe unit, making sure that thebolts are tight. Tighten the remaining bolts locatedat each of the stabilizer ends. Turn the lathe andstand right-side up and check to see if the lathebed is parallel to the ground. Loosen and adjustthe stand bolts accordingly until the lathe is level.Be careful not to loosen the bolts too much as thelathe may tip over. Make sure that all the bolts aresecurely tightened before continuing.

Stand

Figure 3. All die-cut metal parts have a sharp edge(called “flashing”) on them after they areformed. This is removed at the factory.Sometimes, though, a bit of flashing mightescape inspection. Please examine theedges of all die-cut metal parts before han-dling them. Serious injury may occur. Tool Rest

The tool rest is equipped with a horizontal and avertical adjustment lever. By loosening the levers, the tool rest can be precisely placed along theworkpiece for safe and efficient removal of woodstock.

Tailstock

The Model G8691 is supplied with a #2 MorseTaper live center. The tailstock can be adjustedalong the length of the lathe bed to accommodatevarious lengths of wood stock. There are twoways to adjust the tailstock. The bolt locatedunder the lathe bed can be loosened, allowing thetailstock to slide up and down the length of thelathe bed. ASSEMBLY, CONT.

Spur Center

The Model G8691 is supplied with a #2 MorseTaper spur center for use when spindle turning. The spur center is used in conjunction with thetailstock live center. Before installing the spurcenter, thread spindle nut onto shaft and lightlytighten nut. Then insert the spur center into thehole in the spindle end. To remove the spur cen-ter, use the supplied open end wrench and anadjustable wrench to thread the spindle nut offalong with the spur center. Figure 5.

Figure 4. Figure 5.

Faceplate

The faceplate is used for turning plates andbowls. To install the faceplate, remove the spurcenter. Using the supplied open-end wrench tohold the spindle, thread the faceplate onto thespindle threads. Tighten securely with fingers anduse the mounting holes on the faceplate to attachwood stock. Figure 6.

Figure 6.

Make sure the live center in the tailstocklines up with the spur center in the head-stock before turning anything between thecenters. Failure to observe this step couldresult in the workpiece being thrown fromthe lathe. Serious personal injury couldoccur if care is not taken.

It is important to make sure the spur center andlive center are lined up with one another. Theeasiest way to accomplish this is to make surethe tailstock “footprint” is centered over the widthof the lathe bed. Loosen the bolt holding the tail-stock secure to lathe bed and adjust the assem-bly until alignment is achieved, then tightensecurely.

SECTION 5: OPERATIONS

Once assembly is complete and adjustments aremade to your satisfaction, you are ready to testrun the machine.

Turn on the power supply at the main panel.Press the START button. Make sure that your fin-ger is poised on the STOP button, just in casethere’s a problem. The lathe should run smoothly, with little or no vibration or rubbing noises.Strange or unnatural noises should be investigat-ed and corrected before operating the machinefurther.

If you cannot easily locate the source of anunusual noise or vibration, contact our servicedepartment for help.

Test Run

DO NOT attempt to investigate or adjust themachine while it is running. Wait until themachine is turned off, unplugged and all theworking parts have come to rest before youdo anything! Serious personal injury mayoccur.

To mount a workpiece between centers:

1. Locate the center point on both ends of theworkpiece by carefully drawing diagonal linesfrom corner to corner. The point of intersec-tion should be at the center of the work.

2. When turning stock with a diameter greaterthan 2", remove the corner length edges witha hand plane or use a similar operation.

3. Hold the spindle vertically and support it on asolid surface. Line up the spur center with thecenter of the workpiece. Drive the spur cen-ter into the stock about 1⁄4" using a dead blowhammer. Be careful not to split the work-piece. Wood with splits along the grain mayfly off during the operation. With dense wood, drill a hole at the centers and score lines witha saw blade for the spur.

4. Once the spur center is firmly attached to theworkpiece, insert the spur center (with theattached workpiece) into the headstock spin-dle. Make sure the spur center taper seatsinto the spindle.

5. While supporting the workpiece, slide the tail-stock close to the end of the workpiece andlock into place.

6. Line up the live center with the workpiececenter. Turn the handwheel to press the pointof the live center into the workpiece.

7. Lock the tailstock in place.

Spindle Turning

Do not press too firmly or the bearings willbind and overheat. On the other hand, donot adjust too loosely or the workpiece willspin off the lathe.Serious personal injurycould result if care is not taken.
