5. KEEP CHILDREN AND VISITORSAWAY. All children and visitors should bekept at a safe distance from work area.

6. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILD PROOF withpadlocks, master switches, or by removingstarter keys.

7. NEVER FORCE TOOL. It will do the jobbetter and safer at the rate for which it wasdesigned.

8. USE RIGHT TOOL. DO NOT force tool orattachment to do a job for which it was notdesigned.

2. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS ANDWRENCHES. Form a habit of checking tosee that keys and adjusting wrenches areremoved from tool before turning on.

3. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Clutteredareas and benches invite accidents.

4. NEVER USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRON-MENT. DO NOT use power tools in dampor wet locations, or where any flammableor noxious fumes may exist. Keep workarea well lighted.

9. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Makesure your extension cord is in good condi-tion. Conductor size should be in accor-dance with the chart below. The amperagerating should be listed on the motor or toolnameplate. An undersized cord will causea drop in line voltage resulting in loss ofpower and overheating. Your extensioncord must also contain a ground wire andplug pin. Always repair or replace exten-sion cords if they become damaged.

10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. DO NOTwear loose clothing, gloves, neckties,rings, bracelets, or other jewelry which mayget caught in moving parts. Non-slipfootwear is recommended. Wear protectivehair covering to contain long hair.

11. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Alsouse face or dust mask if cutting operation isdusty. Everyday eyeglasses only haveimpact resistant lenses, they are NOT safe-ty glasses.

12. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise tohold work when practical. It’s safer thanusing your hand and frees both hands tooperate tool.

13. DO NOT OVER-REACH. Keep properfooting and balance at all times.

14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keeptools sharp and clean for best and safestperformance. Follow instructions for lubri-cating and changing accessories.

Safety Instructions For Power Tools15. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES.

Consult the owner’s manual for recom-mended accessories. The use of improperaccessories may cause risk of injury.

16. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTION-AL STARTING. On machines with magnet-ic contact starting switches there is a risk ofstarting if the machine is bumped or jarred.Always disconnect from power sourcebefore adjusting or servicing. Make sureswitch is in OFF position before reconnect-ing.

17. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before fur-ther use of the tool, a guard or other partthat is damaged should be carefullychecked to determine that it will operateproperly and perform its intended function.Check for alignment of moving parts, bind-ing of moving parts, breakage of parts,mounting, and any other conditions thatmay affect its operation. A guard or otherpart that is damaged should be properlyrepaired or replaced.

18. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNAT-TENDED. TURN POWER OFF. DO NOTleave tool until it comes to a complete stop.

19. NEVER OPERATE A MACHINE WHENTIRED, OR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OFDRUGS OR ALCOHOL. Full mental alert-ness is required at all times when running amachine.

20. NEVER ALLOW UNSUPERVISED ORUNTRAINED PERSONNEL TO OPER-ATE THE MACHINE. Make sure anyinstructions you give in regards to machineoperation are approved, correct, safe, andclearly understood.

21. IF AT ANY TIME YOU ARE EXPERIENC-ING DIFFICULTIES performing the intend-ed operation, stop using the machine! Thencontact our service department or ask aqualified expert how the operation shouldbe performed.

Additional Safety Instructions For The Lathe

No list of safety guidelines can be complete.Every shop environment is different. Alwaysconsider safety first, as it applies to yourindividual working conditions. Use this andother machinery with caution and respect.Failure to do so could result in serious per-sonal injury, damage to equipment, or poorwork results.

Like all machines there is danger associatedwith the Model G1067Z. Accidents are fre-quently caused by lack of familiarity or fail-ure to pay attention. Use this machine withrespect and caution to lessen the possibilityof operator injury. If normal safety precau-tions are overlooked or ignored, seriouspersonal injury may occur.

1. MAKE SURE ALL GUARDS are in placeand that the Lathe sits on a flat, stable sur-face.

2. ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION or aface shield when operating the Lathe. Allsafety equipment should be ANSI approved.

3. USE A RESPIRATOR TO AVOID INHAL-ING DUST. All safety equipment should beANSI approved.

4. BEFORE STARTING THE MACHINE becertain the workpiece has been properlyimbedded on the headstock and tailstockcenters and that there is adequate clearancefor the full rotation.

5. ADJUST TOOL REST to provide propersupport for the turning tool you will be using.Test tool rest clearance by rotating work-piece by hand before turning lathe on.

6. SELECT THE TURNING SPEED which isappropriate for the type of work. Allow thelathe to gain its full speed before using.

7. ALWAYS INSPECT THE CONDITION ofthe materials you are turning. Do not turnpieces with knots, splits and other potential-ly dangerous conditions.

8. KEEP LATHE TOOLS PROPERLYSHARPENED and hold firmly in the properposition when turning.

9. NEVER OPERATE THE LATHE WITHDAMAGED OR WORN PARTS. Maintainyour lathe in proper working condition.

10. MAKE SURE YOUR WOOD LATHE ISTURNED OFF, disconnected from itspower source and all moving parts havecome to a complete stop before startingany inspection, adjustment, or mainte-nance procedure.

11. DO NOT LEAVE LATHE RUNNINGUNATTENDED for any reason.

12. DO NOT STOP LATHE USING YOURHAND against the workpiece.

13. KEEP LOOSE CLOTHING ARTICLESsuch as sleeves, belts and jewelry itemsaway from the lathe spindle.

14. WHEN FACE PLATE TURNING, use lathechisels on the downward spinning side ofthe workpiece only.

15. REMOVE THE TOOL REST when per-forming sanding or polishing operations onthe rotating spindle.

16. ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE too muchmaterial at once may cause work materialto fly out of the lathe.

17. THE JOINTS OF GLUED-UP WORK-PIECES should be high quality to preventthem from breaking under the extremeforces of lathe turning. Consult in-depthtrade manuals and instructional books forcorrect techniques when gluing up a work-piece from multiple pieces. If a joint failsduring a lathe turning operation, seriousinjury or death could occur.

The Model G1067Z Wood Lathe is shipped fromthe manufacturer in a carefully packed carton. Ifyou discover the machine is damaged afteryou’ve signed for delivery, please call CustomerService immediately for advice.

Save the containers and all packing materials forpossible inspection by the carrier or its agent.Otherwise, filing a freight claim can be difficult.

When you are completely satisfied with the con-dition of your shipment, you should inventory itsparts.

The G1067Z representsa load of 179 pounds.Seek assistance beforebeginning assembly.

Some metal parts mayhave sharp edges onthem after they areformed. Please examinethe edges of all metalparts before handlingthem. Failure to do socould result in injury.

The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxyoil to protect them from corrosion during ship-ment. Remove this protective coating with a sol-vent cleaner or citrus-based degreaser such asGrizzly’s G7895 Degreaser. To clean thoroughly,some parts may need to be removed. For opti-mum performance from your machine, makesure you clean all moving parts or slidingcontact surfaces that are coated. Avoid chlo-rine-based solvents as they may damage paintedsurfaces should they come in contact.

Gasoline and petroleumproducts have low flashpoints and could explodeif used to clean machin-ery. DO NOT use gaso-line or petroleum prod-ucts to clean the machin-ery.

Smoking near solventscould ignite an explosionor fire and cause seriousinjury. DO NOT smokewhile using solvents.

Lack of ventilation whileusing solvents couldcause serious personalhealth risks, fire, orenvironmental hazards.Always work in a wellventilated area to pre-vent the accumulationof dangerous fumes.Supply the work areawith a constant sourceof fresh air.

Clean Up

Unsupervised childrenand visitors inside yourshop could receive seri-ous personal injury.Ensure child and visitorsafety by keeping allentrances to the shoplocked at all times. DONOT allow unsupervisedchildren or visitors in theshop at any time.

Floor LoadThe Model G1067Z weighs 179 lbs. Most com-mercial floors are suitable for your machine.Some floors may require additional reinforcementto support the machine, the operator, and theworkpiece.

Working ClearancesConsider existing and anticipated needs, size ofmaterial to be processed through each machine,and space for auxiliary stands, work tables orother machinery when establishing a location foryour machine.

Circuit Requirements

Amperage DrawThe Model G1067Z motor is wired to operate at110V and will draw the following load:

Plug TypeThe Model G1067Z is supplied with a NEMA 5-15plug. DO NOT modify the plug or power cord inany way. See Figure 1 for a NEMA 5-15 plug andgrounded outlet.

Circuit Breaker RequirementsWe recommend that the circuit you use yourmachine on should be dedicated. Because themachine motors are different sizes, please usethe following guidelines when choosing a circuitbreaker for your machine (circuit breakers ratedany higher are not adequate to protect the cir-cuit):

Recommended Circuit Breaker ..............15 Amp

Your Circuit CapacityAlways check to see if the wires in your circuit arecapable of handling the amperage load from yourmachine. If you are unsure, consult a qualifiedelectrician.

If you operate this machine on any circuit that isalready close to its capacity, it might blow a fuseor trip a circuit breaker. However, if an unusualload does not exist and a power failure stilloccurs, contact a qualified electrician or ourService Department at (570) 546-9663.

Serious personal injury could occur if youconnect your machine to the power sourcebefore you have completed the assemblyprocess. DO NOT connect the machine tothe power source until instructed to do so.

In the event of an electrical short, groundingreduces the risk of electric shock by providing apath of least resistance to disperse electric cur-rent. This tool is equipped with a power cord thathas an equipment-grounding prong. The outletmust be properly installed and grounded in accor-dance with all local codes and ordinances.

110V OperationIf you find it necessary to use an extension cordat 110V:

• Make sure the cord is rated Standard Service(grade S) or better.

• The extension cord must also contain aground wire and plug pin.

• Use at least a 16 gauge cord if the cord is 50feet long or less.

• DO NOT use a cord longer that 100 feet!

Extension Cords

This machine must have a ground prong inthe plug to help ensure that it is grounded.DO NOT remove ground prong from plug tofit into a two-pronged outlet! If the plug willnot fit the outlet, have the proper outletinstalled by a qualified electrician.

Electrocution or a firecan result if the machineis not grounded correct-ly. Make sure all electri-cal circuits are ground-ed. Do not use themachine if it is notgrounded.

No single list of electrical guidelines canbe comprehensive for all shop environ-ments. Operating this machinery mayrequire additional electrical upgrades spe-cific to your machine and shop environ-ment. It is your responsibility to make sureyour electrical systems comply with alllocal electrical codes and ordinances.

NOTICEThe wire on the power cord with green orgreen and yellow striped insulation is thegrounding conductor.

Assembly of the G1067Z is straightforward. Wehave organized the assembly process into steps.Please follow them in sequence.

Tools Required: Only a few common tools areneeded to assemble this machine. Specifically, a6" adjustable wrench, 12mm open end wrench,regular and Phillips head screwdriver and an8mm Hex wrench.

1. Locate all four stand legs and the two endpanels. Attach an end panel to any two of thelegs using the 10-24 x 3⁄8'' Phillips headscrews provided (Figure 1). Repeat this stepfor the remaining end panel/legs. DO NOTfinal tighten the bolts at this time.

Wear safety glasses dur-ing the entire set upprocess!

This machine presentsserious injury hazardsto untrained users. Readthrough this entire man-ual to become familiarwith the controls andoperations before start-ing the machine!

2. Bolt the upper mount plate and the shortstand support to each end assembly usingthe 5⁄16''-18 x 3⁄4'' carriage bolts provided(Figure 2).

4. With an assistant, set the lathe bed assem-bly on the stand, orienting the front of theheadstock with the switch opening in thestand leg. Bolt the lathe bed to the standusing the eight 5⁄16''-18 x 1 cap screws andhex nuts supplied and tighten down (Figure4).

5. At this point tighten down all the bolts on thestand. It is a good idea to do this with thelathe set in place where it will be used.

3. Attach the long stand supports to each endassembly using the 5⁄16''-18 x 3⁄4'' carriagebolts provided (Figure 3).

1. Locate the paddle switch.

2. Press the paddle switch into the cut-out onthe face of the leg as shown in Figure 5.

Do not plug cord in until you are ready totest run the lathe. See Test Run section forinstructions before initial run.

3. Attach the power wires to the back of thepaddle switch as shown in Figure 6. Note—The green ground wire MUST be securelyattached to the sheet metal leg.

Note—The paddle switch is equipped with aremovable safety key (Figure 7). When the latheis not be in use, the safety key should beremoved from the paddle switch and placed in asafe location. The lathe cannot be turned onwhen the safety key is removed from the paddleswitch.

The tool rest is equipped with a cam-actionclamping system to secure it to the lathe bed. Toinstall the tool rest assembly:

1. Remove the large hex nut and lock platefrom the bottom of the tool rest assembly.

2. Set the tool rest assembly on the lathe bedwith the clamp stud between the bed slot.

3. Set the tool rest lock handle so it is pointingdown. Re-install the lock plate and threadthe hex nut back onto the stud until it bot-toms out.

4. Lift the lock handle approximately 90˚ andtighten the hex nut 1⁄2 to 2⁄3 of a turn more.

5. Turn the tool rest lock handle until it locks thetool rest down onto the bed. You may needto adjust the hex nut in small increments tofine tune how the tool rest assembly locksdown onto the bed.

The G1067Z is supplied with a #2 Morse taperspur center for use when spindle turning. Thespur center is used in conjunction with the tail-stock live center. Install the spur center by insert-ing into the hole in the inboard spindle (Figure10).

The G1067Z is supplied with a 6'' face plate.Thefaceplate is used for bowl and plate turning.Install the face plate by threading the face plateonto the inboard spindle. Use the indexing pin tohold the spindle from rotating while tighteningdown or removing the face plate (Figure 12). DONOT use the face plate in conjunction with thespur center. Mount your workpiece to the faceplate using the mounting holes bored into theface plate.

To remove: insert the knockout bar provided intothe outboard spindle and tap with the palm ofyour hand while carefully holding onto the spurcenter with your other hand (Figure 11).

The joints of glued-up workpieces shouldbe high quality to prevent them from break-ing under the extreme forces of lathe turn-ing. Consult in-depth trade manuals andinstructional books for correct techniqueswhen gluing up a workpiece from multiplepieces. If a joint fails during a lathe turningoperation, serious injury or death couldoccur.

The contact area between the workpieceand the face plate must be flush with oneanother. Failure to do this could result inthe face plate distorting or breaking when itis screwed to the workpiece, or during use,causing injury or death.

The Model G1067Z headstock can be swiveled180˚ as well as positioned anywhere along thebed.

1. Loosen the quick release lever by pushing itdown (Figure 13).

2. Move the headstock to the desired positionand re-engage the quick release lever(Figure 14). Note—The large hex nut underthe headstock will require occasional adjust-ing to assure proper clamping pressure tothe bed. Turn the hex nut in small incrementsto fine tune the clamping pressure.

1. Loosen the quick release lever by pushing itdown.

2. Pull the spring loaded quick release set pin(Figure 15) and rotate the headstock clock-wise 90˚ or 180˚.

3. Release the set pin. Make sure the set pinhas engaged in its detent by trying to rotatethe headstock.

4. Now position the head stock along the bedas desired and engage the quick releaselever.

The tailstock is equipped with a cam-actionclamping system to secure it to the lathe bed.When the lever is thrown, a locking plate lifts upand secures the tool rest to the bed. To positionthe tailstock along the bed:

1. Loosen the quick release lever and move thetailstock to the desired position (Figure 18).

2. Re-engage the quick release lever.

3. If the quick release lever will not lock the tail-stock down onto the bed (either too loose ortoo tight), loosen or tighten the hex nut(located on the underside of the tailstock) insmall increments as needed to achieve theproper clamping pressure.

(1) The tailstock barrel lock handle (Figure19) must always be locked down while thelathe is in use. The workpiece can bethrown from the lathe if this step is notobserved. (2) The tailstock barrel shouldnot protrude from the tailstock housingmore than 2''. Serious personal injury mayoccur.

A #2 Morse taper live center is supplied with thelathe and is preinstalled from the factory (Figure19). To remove it:

1. Turn the handwheel counter-clockwise untilthe tailstock barrel bottoms out in the tail-stock housing. This causes the center to beforced out of the barrel.

2. Reinstall by turning the handwheel clockwiseuntil the tailstock barrel sticks out of the tail-stock housing about 1⁄2''. Insert the live cen-ter back into the tailstock barrel.

Speed Selector

The variable speed selector has six position set-tings. These settings provide speeds of 500, 800,1200, 1600, 2000 and 2700 RPM for varied appli-cations. To change speeds:

1. Turn the lathe on.

2. Pull the speed selector lever straight backaway from the machine so the detent springcompresses (Figure 20).

3. Slowly shift the lever to the desired speed.

4. Make sure the lever is set in the detent forthe desired speed. The lever should clickinto position.

Remember to choose the correct speed foryour particular turning project. As a gener-al rule, the larger the workpiece diameter,the slower the speed. Always start on slowspeed.

The lathe must be running to changespeeds. Before turning the lathe on, readSafety Rules and Test Run in theOperations Section.

Adjust the tool rest as close to the workpiece aspossible without actually coming in contact withthe workpiece. Test by hand turning the work-piece before turning lathe on. Ensure that thelathe chisel is fully supported by the tool rest.Support the lathe chisel on the tool rest with onehand, while controlling the chisel with the otherhand (Figure 21). For outboard turning, it may bedesirable to use a free standing tool rest.

DO NOT attempt to investigate or adjustthe machine while it is running. Wait untilthe machine is turned off, unplugged andall working parts have come to a restbefore you do anything! Serious personalinjury may occur.

Once the assembly is complete and the adjust-ments are done to your satisfaction, you areready to test the machine.

Turn on the power supply at the mainpanel. Press the START button. Make surethat your finger is poised on the STOP but-ton, just in case there’s a problem. TheWood Lathe should run smoothly, with lit-tle or no vibration or rubbing noises.Strange or unnatural noises should beinvestigated and corrected before operat-ing the machine further.

If the lathe runs smoothly, try mounting apiece of turning stock. If a problem exists,stop the machine and review all the adjust-ments. Call for assistance, if needed.

Spindle Turning

Make sure the live center in the tailstocklines up with the spur center in the head-stock before turning anything betweencenters. Failure to observe this step couldresult in the workpiece being thrown fromthe lathe. Serious personal injury mayoccur.

Before a workpiece is mounted into the lathe, thepoints of the installed spur center and the livecenter must align perfectly with one another(Figure 22). View the alignment from above thelathe and from the side.

To mount a workpiece between centers:

1. Locate the center point on both ends of theworkpiece by carefully drawing diagonallines from corner to corner. The point of inter-section is the center of the work. Find thecenter of round wood stock by using a centerfinder instrument.

2. When turning stock with a diameter greaterthan 2", remove the corner length edges witha hand plane or similar operation. DO NOTattempt to “round” square stock in the lathe.Serious personal injury many occur.

3. Hold the spindle vertically and support it on asolid surface. Line up the spur center withthe center of the workpiece. Drive the spurcenter into the stock about 1⁄4" using a deadblow hammer. Be careful not to split theworkpiece. See Figure 23. Wood with splitsalong the grain may fly off during the opera-tion. Note—With dense wood, drill a hole atthe center and score lines with a saw bladefor the spur center.

4. Once the spur center is firmly attached to theworkpiece, insert the spur center (with theattached workpiece) into the headstock spin-dle.

5. While supporting the workpiece, slide thetailstock close to the end of the workpieceand lock it into place.

6. Line up the live center with the workpiececenter. Turn the handwheel to press thepoint of the live center into the workpiece.Note—With dense wood, drill a hole at thecenter and score lines with a saw blade forthe live center.

7. Lock the tailstock in place.

Do not press too firmly or the bearings willbind and overheat. Likewise, do not adjusttoo loosely or the workpiece will spin offthe lathe. Use good judgement. Seriouspersonal injury could result if care is nottaken.

Outboard turning is usually done when stockdiameter is greater than 12''. For the size of thisparticular lathe and its minimum turning speed,we recommend a maximum diameter of 17'' anda maximum thickness of 2''.

Figure 24 depicts the lathe setup at 90˚ for turn-ing a bowl using the tool rest extension supplied.

Figure 25 depicts the lathe setup at 180˚ for turn-ing a bowl using a free standing tool rest (not sup-plied).

The headstock spindle indexes every 15˚ byinserting the indexing pin into one of the holes inthe headstock. Indexing is desirable when lockingthe workpiece in position such as when routingflutes. The spindle is drilled every 30˚ and theheadstock housing has two holes that are drilled15˚ apart. To index the spindle:

1. Insert the pin through the hole in the hous-ing.

2. Rotate the spindle by hand until the pindrops into a hole in the spindle (Figure 26).

The G1067Z Lathe is equipped with a split pulleysystem which allows the speed of the lathe to bechanged while its running. To assure the smoothoperation of this pulley system, we recommendthe main spindle and motor spindle be greasedoccasionally. To do this, remove the pulley cover,vacuum out any saw dust and apply grease to thespots indicated in Figure 27. Disposable acidbrushes work best to get into these hard to reachplaces.

Shielded and pre-lubricated ball bearings requireno lubrication for the life of the bearings. In a con-tinuous-use environment, expect the bearings tolast for several years. With intermittent use, bear-ings can be expected to last much longer. Allbearings are common sizes and can be easilyobtained.

The bed and other non-painted surfaces on theModel G1067Z should be protected against rustand pitting. Wiping the lathe clean after every useensures that moisture from wood dust isn’tallowed to trap moisture against bare metal sur-faces.

Make a habit of inspecting your lathe each timeyou use it. Check for the following conditions andrepair or replace when necessary.

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.
