Site Considerations Notes

FLOOR LOADYour G2891, when mounted to your wood lathe, represents a large weight load in a small foot-print. Be sure that the floor in your work area isadequately reinforced to support the weight of thelathe and copy attachment.

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine withoutlimitation. Ensure that your working area offersplenty of room for free movement and a substan-tial amount of distance between you and othersthat may be working in your shop space.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadows and prevent eye strain. Electrical cir-cuits should be dedicated or large enough to han-dle combined motor amp loads of the lathe andother machinery connected to that circuit. Outletsshould be located near each machine so poweror extension cords are not obstructing high-trafficareas. Be sure to observe local electrical codesfor proper installation of new lighting, outlets, orcircuits.

Make your shop “child safe”. Ensure thatyour workplace is inaccessible to young-sters by closing and locking all entranceswhen you are away. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting oroperating equipment.

Mounting

The Model G2891 mounts easily on Grizzly LatheModels G1067Z and G1495. It will also mount onmost other lathes having a bed size of at least40''. Two mounting brackets attach the bed of theModel G2891 securely to the bed of the lathe. The mounting process is as follows:

1. Mount the two bed brackets perpendicularto the lathe bed with the large cap screwsand the square threaded mounting platesprovided. The heads of the cap screwsshould be on top of the brackets and themounting plates should be below the bed.

To provide a solid base for the CopyAttachment base, the mounting bracketsshould be centered on points measuring20% of the distance across the bed fromthe headstock and tailstock. See Figure 2.On a lathe with a 40" bed, brackets will becentered approximately 8" from the head-stock and tailstock. Some minor degree ofvariation may be necessary to eliminateany interference between the CopyAttachment and the normal operation of thelathe.

The front of the brackets should cantileverover the front of the lathe bed by about 6".Just finger-tighten the cap screws for now.

Figure 3. Sliding attachment onto bolts.

2. Slide the two hex head bolts with clampingplates attached into the channel locatedalong the bottom of the Copy Attachmentmain body. See Figure 3. Place the CopyAttachment onto the bed brackets installedin Step 1, dropping the hex bolts throughthe bed bracket slots at the front of thelathe. Center the attachment body with thelathe bed and slip the packing block, flatwashers, spring washers and nuts providedover the hex bolts and just finger-tighten.

Make certain the Copy Attachment doesnot block access to any of the lathe con-trols. Some lateral adjustment can be doneto assure clearance if necessary.

4. Tighten the large cap screws securing themounting brackets to the lathe bed with thelarge Allen® wrench provided. Then tightenthe hex nuts securing the Copy AttachmentBed to the mounting brackets.

5. Once the brackets and bed are securelyattached, remove the gauge boards.

6. Install the longitudinal-feed handwheel. This is the larger of the two handwheels. Itmounts on the shaft at the left hand end ofthe Copy Attachment Bed. Secure thewheel with the setscrew included.

7. Attach the crossfeed handwheel handle tothe smaller wheel on the the sliding car-riage.

8. Install the cutting tool into the arbor andtighten the collar setscrew. See Figure 5.

Once the Copy Attachment Bed is attached tothe mounting brackets, the following procedureswill allow you to begin the very important processof aligning the parallelism between the centers ofthe lathe and those of the centers which will holdyour template or original profile.

1. To roughly align the Copy Attachment withthe lathe headstock/tailstock axis twogauge boards will be needed. The gaugeboard should be approximately 1- 11⁄8''thick, 6 - 8'' wide and 2 - 3'' long. Clampthese gauge boards onto the lathe bed,one under the headstock, the other underthe tailstock.

2. Place a machinist’s square on top of thewood and measure 3'' toward the CopyAttachment bed. See Figure 4. Place aprecise mark across the width of the wood.Repeat the process with another piece ofwood at the headstock.

G2891 Lathe Copy Attachment -11-

Final alignment of the lathe axis and the copieraxis must be precise to ensure that they are bothparallel. Before executing the following steps, mount a turning square between the centers ofyour lathe.

The turning square should be as long as the max-imum center-to-center distance of your lathe toensure the greatest degree of accuracy. It is crit-ical that the turning blank is perfectly centeredand as near-perfectly straight as possible.

1. Move the carriage to one end of the CopyAttachment and crank the cross-feed hand-wheel until the cutting tool nearly touchesthe side of the blank. See Figure 6.

Final Alignment

NOTICEIf the carriage is difficult or impossible tomove along the bed, see Gib Adjustment innext section.

very carefully adjust the bed until the cutteris equal distant from the turning square atboth ends of its longitudinal movement.

4. Continue to test the cutter against the turn-ing square until it is evenly spaced in rela-tion to the turning square along its entirelength.

5. Once adjustments are complete, ensurethat all mounting bolts are securely tight-ened.

Figure 7. Using precision spacer.

Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing, jewel-ry, or other personal items that could becaught in moving parts of the machinerywhile adjusting or operating this machine.Serious personal injury could result if thiswarning is ignored.2. Without changing the position of the turning

blank, slowly turn the longitudinal feedhandwheel to move the carriage toward theopposite end of the lathe. Use a feelergauge or another precision spacer whenstarting out to ensure consistent distancebetween the cutter and the turning square.See Figure 7.

3. If the cutter does not maintain a consistentdistance from the turning square at bothends of the cutter’s longitudinal movement,or along it’s length, you may have to loosenthe bed from its mounting brackets andvery

Cable Tension

SECTION 4: ADJUSTMENTS

The movement of the carriage assembly alongthe body of the Copy Attachment is controlled bythe movement of the Longitudinal-FeedHandwheel. This Handwheel is connected to thecarriage via a cable. This cable should be taut toensure responsive movement of the carriage.

The cable can be tightened by loosening the boltat the control rod. See Figure 8. The cableshould then be pulled snugly, but not so tight thatstress is placed on the cable. Once snug, re-tight-en the bolt to secure the cable.

Gib Adjustment

The carriage slides along the Copy Attachmentbed on brass strips called gibs. These gibs arethe means by which you adjust the amount offriction or play between the carriage and the bed.

Figure 8. Adjusting carriage cable tension.

Figure 9. Adjusting the gib tightness.

The goal of gib adjustment is to provide as littleplay as possible between the carriage and thebed while still allowing free movement of the car-riage.

There are eight adjustment locations: 2 on thefront of the carriage, 2 on the back and 4 under-neath.

To adjust the gibs:

1. Loosen the lock nut(s) and and loosen ortighten the setscrews with the 3mm Allen®

wrench.

2. Slide the carriage back and forth to test forbinding and re-adjust until the carriagetravels smoothly, without binding or excesswobble.

3. When adjustments are complete, tightenthe lock nuts while maintaining thesetscrew position with the Allen® wrench.See Figure 9. Re-test after tightening.

Cutting Tool

The cutting tool can be positioned closer or far-ther away from the workpiece by loosening thesetscrew at the top of the cutting tool collar. Usean 8mm Allen® wrench to make collar adjust-ments. To install or replace the cutting tool:

1. Loosen the setscrew on the cutting tool col-lar.

2. Insert the cutting tool with the triangularcutting edge up. See Figure 10.

3. Tighten the setscrew.

Figure 10. Cutting tool and setscrew.

Copy Stylus

To ensure the greatest level of precision whilecopying from a template or a master profile, it isessential that the Copy Stylus is properly posi-tioned at the underside of the travelling carriage. When adjusting the stylus, keep in mind that itsfollower edge should be centered on the templateor master profile, so the narrowest point fitssecurely within the profile. To adjust the stylus:

1. Center your master profile on the copy cen-ters, or attach your profile template to theattachment brackets included on the frontof the Copy Attachment body. Insert thestylus so the rounded edge of the followercontacts the master. See Figure 11.

2. Be sure that your template or master profileis perfectly parallel to the Copy Attachmentbed by repeating the procedures used tocheck alignment between the lathe centersand the Copy Attachment. This time, movethe stylus from one end of the template ormaster profile to the other by turning thelongitudinal handwheel. The cross-slidehandwheel will allow you to adjust the loca-tion of the stylus, so you can find points oneither end of the profile which will allow youto ensure proper alignment. Adjust the sty-lus height until the follower edge is cen-tered on the template or profile. Tighten thesetscrew to secure the stylus.

SECTION 5: Operations

Overview

This Copy Attachment will produce any numberof duplicate spindles from one master profile ortemplate. The advantages provided by thisaccessory for your wood lathe are readily appar-ent, in terms of consistency and labor savings.

While the Copy Attachment provides a substan-tial aid in recreating spindle profiles, keep in mindthat it is designed primarily for rough spindleshaping. Its capacity for detail is limited by thecutter and stylus. Final detailed turning will bebest accommodated with the use of hand-guided,precision turning chisels.

To minimize the need for extensive hand work,we recommend you create profiles with gracefultapers and beads whenever possible.

Important Points

Because small-diameter master spindles havethe potential to bend or bow slightly when the sty-lus makes contact, we recommend using a tem-plate made from 1/4" to 3/8 " plywood or some otherstable material. The master spindle profile can betransferred to the template and carefully cut out.The template can then be attached to the mount-ing brackets located on the front side of the CopyAttachment body. See “Stylus Adjustment” in theAdjustment Section for details on proper templatealignment.

The following are some other important points toconsider when using your Copy Attachment:

• To reduce whip and vibration of relativelynarrow copy spindles, we recommend oper-ating the longitudinal handwheel with yourleft hand and backing up the spinning work-piece with your right. DO NOT attempt togrip the workpiece too tightly while it is turn-ing.

• If the cut you are producing is too rough, tryincreasing the rotation speed of your lathe(not to exceed the maximum recommendedspeed for the size of material you are turn-ing) and take a lighter cut. See your lathe’sinstruction manual for recommendedspeeds.

• As with any other surfacing operation, werecommend taking multiple passes, ratherthan trying to remove too much wood all atonce. This is much safer and will also resultin improved cutting results.

• When making copies, always move the sty-lus so it follows the template or master pro-file “downhill”. Trying to move the stylus“uphill” along the template will cause the sty-lus and cutter to dig into the template andworkpiece. See Figure 12 for recommendeddirection of cuts.

• To avoid unnecessary waste of expensivepremium materials, we strongly recommendyou turn a test piece before attempting dupli-cation on your finish material. Make adjust-ments as required.

• You can save time during duplication byremoving the corners from all of the spindlesyou plan on creating before activating theCopy Attachment. You will need to make thecuts with a lathe chisel on your tool rest, prior to installing the Copy Attachment.

To make a copy of an existing spindle or tem-plate:

1. To make identical copies from a masterspindle it is necessary to first make certainthe cutting tool and the follower stylus arealigned with their respective centerlines.See Figure 13. This can be done most eas-ily by mounting turning squares with identi-cal dimensions on the lathe centers and onthe Copy Attachment centers. Move the fol-lower stylus so it just touches the square.Adjust the cutting tool in or out of the hold-er so it also just touches the square.Remove the turning squares.

2. Mount the workpiece between the lathecenters.

3. Move the carriage with the longitudinalhandwheel until the tip of the cutter is pre-cisely located at the point on the workpiecewhere you want the turning action to begin.See Figure 12.

4. If you are using a template, spread the tem-plate-mounting brackets apart to accom-modate the template. Note that you willhave to drill holes in your template to mountit to the template mounting brackets.Locate the position of the template on theCopy Attachment main body so the profilewill line up with the desired location of theprofile on the workpiece. If you followedStep 2, the stylus should line up at the start-ing point of the template.

5. Adjust the crosswheel until the styluscomes in contact with the template in itsdesired position.

6. If duplicating an existing spindle, mount thespindle between the master spindle carri-ers. First position and lock the head centerso the existing spindle profile will line upwith the intended profile area on the copy.Use a 13mm wrench to loosen and tighten-ing the mounting fasteners. Slide the tailcenter so it is just outside of the masterspindle, and lock in place. Hold the masterspindle in position and tighten the handknob located on the tail center.

Make sure that the workpiece is firmly seat-ed between centers. If it becomes unseatedfrom the lathe at operating speed, the work-piece will be propelled from the machine.Serious personal injury will occur to anyonein the path of the workpiece.

7. Move the carriage stylus to the left handlimit of the profiled area and adjust the lefthand stop until it is in contact with the car-riage. See Figure 14. Tighten the stop witha Phillips® head screwdriver.

8. Repeat the procedure for the right handstop.

Figure 14. Adjusting positive stops.

9. Once the template and the workpiece areboth securely in place, loosen the cutter inits collar and adjust it until both the cutterand the stylus are just touching the work-piece evenly and the template evenly. It isessential for accurate copying that the cut-ter tip and the tip of the stylus alwaysremain at the same positions in relation tothe workpiece and the master profile. Slidethe carriage away from the workpiece, soboth the stylus and cutter are well awayfrom your work.

10. Ensure that everything is secure and turnon the lathe at its slowest speed. Slowlyadvance the cutting tool toward the leftedge of the workpiece. Once contact ismade, advance the cutting tool into thecopy spindle approximately 1/16". Turn thelongitudinal handwheel so the carriagetravels from stop to stop.

11. After each pass, extend the cutter another1/16" (maximum) and repeat with anotherpass. Repeat this process until the styluscomes in contact with the template.

12. Watch the tool carefully as you make each

pass. If it tends to bite or gouge the work-piece, back the cutter slightly and tryagain. Be conservative when removingstock.

13. After you’ve made several passes with thecutting tool, turn the lathe off and inspectthe results. It should not be tapered. If it is,the Copy Attachment is not properlyaligned to the axis of the wood lathe. Re-align the attachment, according to theinstructions in the Assembly andAdjustment Sections and re-try with a newtest cut.

14. If you are satisfied, continue to removematerial from the workpiece, using the“downhill” cutting method shown earlier.Remember, trying to cut “uphill” will likelyresult in chipping and gouging. Don’t do it.

15. Continue removing stock until the work-piece is complete. See Figure 15.

Figure 15. Shaping the copy spindle.

16. After completing the initial copy, continuefollowing these procedures until all thespindles are completed.

17. When all spindles are complete, removethe Copy Attachment and replace it withthe lathe’s tool post.

18. Use appropriate lathe chisels to sharpendetails and smooth the turned surfaces ofeach copy. Sand smooth.

SECTION 6: MAINTENANCE

After each copying session, wipe the lathe andCopy Attachment with a clean cloth to removeaccumulated chips and sawdust.

1. Apply a light spray lubricant to the longitu-dinal and crossfeed gears.

2. To prevent rust and corrosion, apply anoccasional coating of carnauba paste waxto the bed and other non-painted surfaces.

3. Above all else, keep the entire CopyAttachment, as well as the wood lathe, clean and free of accumulated dirt andgrime that could impede free movement ofthe carriage, cutter, stylus or other workingparts.

Never allow visitors into your shop whileassembling, operating, or maintaining toolsand machinery. Keep your shop child-safeby locking up securely when not in use, andby providing proper supervision when chil-dren are present.

Lubrication Cutting Tool

After extended use, particularly with hardwoodsor woods with large amounts of oil or resins, thecutter may become dull.

When you notice that the cutter seems to beworking abnormally hard while cutting, or if over-heating or frequent gouging and chipping occur, you will need to either sharpen or replace the cut-ting tool. Loosen the collar setscrew and removethe tool, and sharpen or replace as needed.

Cutting tools will become very hot when inuse. Use care when removing a cutting toolwhich has just been used. It can still beextremely hot and cause painful burns.Wear gloves, or wait for the tool to cooldown before removing or adjusting.
