Mission Statement

The Women’s Caucus for Political Science (WCPS) is a national, nonprofit organization whose mission is to upgrade the status of women in the profession of political science, to promote equal opportunities for women political scientists for graduate school admission, financial assistance in such schools, and in employment, promotion, and tenure, to promote the development of non-academic, professional careers for women political scientists, to promote the recruitment of members and the development of regional caucuses, and to encourage application of the skills of political science to the promotion of equal opportunities for all women. Founded in 1969, the WCPS was instrumental in the American Political Science Association refusing to meet in states that had not endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment during the ratification period, and has advanced the representation and visibility of women in the profession. WCPS sponsors programs addressing issues and public policies of concern to women in the profession, provides support for women who feel they have been discriminated against through the Betty Glad Legal Defense Fund and through awards recognizing the contributions of women political scientists.

In recent years, the WCPS has become active in taking public positions on issues that impact equal opportunities for all women, such as endorsement of the Lily Ledbetter Act in 2009. Organized as a 501(c)3 entity, WCPS views its mission as one of education and advocacy. The WCPS also includes regional affiliates (including in the West, South and Midwest regions of the U.S.) and includes women in both the academy and in applied positions. WCPS meets during the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association. Between meetings, WCPS members maintain contact though a quarterly newsletter (WCPS Quarterly) and through discussion on the WCPS listserv.

Membership Dues

Although we are currently offering free memberships, WCPS members are encouraged to pay dues, if they are able to. The Caucus provides a place for women in the field to meet and support each other as women of political science. Caucus dues allow us to hold our annual receptions which provide an important role in building relationships and honoring women in political science. In addition, the Betty Glad Defense Fund is only available to members. The membership form is found on the last page.

A Letter from President Nadia Brown Greetings Caucus Members, I am delighted to address you in our fall 2017 newsletter! If there was ever a time that women, nongender conforming and non-binary individuals needed to belong to supportive, friendly, and affirming

organization this is it. Unfortunately, it seems as if we are met with disturbing incidences of gender-based violence, harassment, and/or discrimination each day as we listen the news. Today’s political culture not only sanctions misogyny and misogynoir but seems to celebrate it. Thankfully womyn are resisting. I am grateful to belong to a group that not only actively challenges these sexist attitudes and behavior but also works to uplift its members as sisters in the struggle towards full equality. It is with this same spirit that I applaud the American Political Science Association and those in leadership who are bringing issues of gender to the forefront. Many thanks to the immediate past presidents of the Women’s Caucus – Kristen Monroe, Laurel Weldon, and Denise Walsh. These women have increased the visibility of the caucus, expanded our influence in the discipline, and have enlarged our membership. Our diligent and hardworking officers – Michelle Wade, Meredith-Joy Petersheim, and Samantha Majic – ensure that the caucus runs effectively and efficiently. It is because of these women that the WCPS is vibrant, healthy and in a position of influence within the discipline. Serving the caucus has been a labor of love for members of the leadership team. We are thankful to you, our dedicated membership, for your continued support and engagement over the years. We love hearing from you, learning about your passions and assisting where we can when necessary. This community has grown stronger because of you. Please note that the WCPS is continuing its membership drive. Membership to the WCPS is free to womyn political scientists if enrolled before 2019. Kindly contact Michelle Wade at [email protected] to take advantage of this free membership. Be sure to spread the news of our membership drive with your networks, particularly among graduate students. I am excited to share our agenda for the upcoming year. President-elect Christina Bejarano of the University of Kansas and I are continuing the efforts of Denise Walsh to diversify the membership of the caucus. We remain committed to prioritizing the issues and increasing the representation of womyn of color in the discipline. Last year, we contacted all the women faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and offered them free membership to the WCPS. This year, we plan to expand our outreach to women at Hispanic Serving Institutions and Tribal Colleges and Universities. As an organization that is striving to be more inclusive and attentive to the distinct needs of marginalized populations we must work harder to build (and maintain) relationships with groups who may not have originally saw the WCPS as a home for them. It is not enough to welcome these groups into our organization, but we must also be attentive to their needs. As such, we are in the process of forming an advisory committee made up of womyn graduate students and faculty at minority serving institutions that will make a set of recommendations of how to better include and advocate for this population. If you are interested in serving on this advisory committee, kindly me directly at [email protected] no later than December 15, 2017. On a related note, the WCPS themed panel for APSA 2018 is titled “Emerging Research on Women of Color.” The intention of this panel is to de-center the prototypical subject of inquiry within the discipline, provide analysis at the intersections of privilege, dominance, oppression, and agency, as well as bring different voices into the spotlight. If you are doing research in this area, kindly contact me directly at [email protected]. This research will inform the next big questions in this area of inquiry. Our goal is to provide a link to research and other resources on our website that scholars can reference when building/updating their syllabi, conducting their own research, or looking for scholars to invite for talks. Next, the WCPS continues to enjoy rewarding working relationships with the Committee on the Status of Women in the Profession, the Women and Politics Research Section, Women Also Know Stuff and the Thelen Presidential Task Force for Women in the Discipline . We are thrilled to join with these other groups to advocate for women in the profession. We are also working to deepen our current relationships

with the regional women’s caucuses. Please visit our webpage for current information about the work of the caucus. Here, you will also find links to our Facebook page, our blog, minutes form our annual business meeting, our newsletter which contains news and announcements, as well as our ways to join our caucus and pay dues. If you have yet to do so, please check out our website, as it contains resources that are of particular interest to our members and womyn in the profession. Lastly, thank you to the WCPS members who graciously agreed to serve on newly created committees (Liaison/Coordinating Committee; Officer Nominating Committee; Distinguished Professor Nominating Committee; Outreach Committee; DA-RT Committee), as well as our graduate student representatives (Paromita Sen for 2017-18 and Elizabeth Newcomer for 2018-19) and Michaele Ferguson (chair of the Betty Glad Legal Defense Fund). These committees will be working to connect with the membership in a variety of meaningful ways. First, the nominating committees will ensure that we are nominating womyn for applicable awards. They will develop a list of names of scholars to nominate and by helping to submit applications for prestigious awards. The outreach committee will work to gather and disseminate pertinent information that are of interest to our membership. And the liaison/coordinating committee will organize efforts between other women’s caucuses and interested parties to advocate for womyn in the profession. If you are interested in serving the WCPS in a more formal leadership position, kindly think about a position on one of these committees. These committees also need your support. You should directly contact members of the committee with ideas, recommendations, or issues that are related to their mission. Lastly, if you have an issue or recommendation that you believe that the WCPS should address please consider contacting the current leadership about creating a new committee. Committees Nominating Committee Amanda Clayton (Vanderbilt University) Debra Thompson (University of Oregon) Kelly Dittmar (Rutgers University, Camden) Distinguished Nominating Committee Christina Greer (Fordham University) Keesha Middlemass (Trinity University) Janni Aragon (University of Victoria) Outreach Committee Natasha Behl (Arizona State University) Inés Valdez (Ohio State University) Chryl Laird (Bowdoin College) Liaison/Coordinating Committee Betina Wilkinson (Wake Forest University) Niambi Carter- (Howard University) Tiffany Barnes (University of Kentucky) All my very best,

Thank You from Laura Woliver

What a lovely surprise in my campus mail: the beautiful award and lovely card from you on behalf of the Women’s Caucus. I am so honored. I am also so sorry I was not at the meeting to thank everyone personally for the recognition. The Women’s Caucus has been a life saver for me in the profession. It was my pleasure to be a part of the Caucus my whole career and to set up and administer the Betty Glad Legal Defense Fund for the Caucus.

Thanks again and please let everyone know how sorry I am that I missed the meeting and how grateful I am for my wonderful Women’s Caucus colleagues. Love, Laura

Hip Hop and Social Justice Edited Volume Call for Papers

Editors: Lakeyta M. Bonnette Georgia State University, Department of Political Science & Adolphus

G. Belk, Jr., Winthrop University, Department of Political Science In 2017, Hip-Hop celebrates its 44th year of existence as a cultural form. Since its inception in urban America, Hip-Hop has transformed into a global phenomenon, serving as a political, social, and cultural mode of expression for people of various races and ethnicities. Not only has rap music experienced an increase in the diversity of its creators and consumers, it has also witnessed an expansion of the political activities of Hip-Hop artists as well as a surge in it influence on political movements across the world. Thus, Hip-Hop is a critical voice for marginalized communities due to its ability to disseminate knowledge, facilitate awareness, and promote mobilization and action for many social injustices. Hip-Hop and Social Justice is a seminal text that utilizes different methodologies to examine the uses of various components of Hip-Hop culture to engage diverse political, social, and economic concerns. The

9

Page 10: womenscaucusforpoliticalsciencedotorg.files.wordpress.com…  · Web viewMission Statement . The Women’s Caucus for Political Science (WCPS) is a national, nonprofit organization

goal of the volume is to document and analyze the ways in which Hip-Hop music, artists, scholars, and activists have discussed, promoted, or supported social justice challenges. This manuscript is soliciting chapters that examine the relationships between Hip-Hop culture, political engagement, and social justice work over the last four decades. The modes in which Hip-Hop has participated in social action are not limited to song creations, campaigns and elections, voter mobilization, and/or monetary contributions. Therefore, this edited volume will be interdisciplinary and focus on the number of ways in which Hip-Hop has been involved in or led social justice fights not only in the U.S., but worldwide. This volume will explore topics such as: Hip Hop and education, Hip Hop and the Black Lives Matter movement, Hip Hop and mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex, Hip Hop and electoral politics, Hip Hop and gender and sexuality, Hip Hop and public policy, Hip Hop, race and racism and Hip Hop and social justice globally. We hope that you are interested in contributing to this peer-reviewed volume. If so, then please email either Lakeyta Bonnette-Bailey at [email protected] or Adolphus G. Belk, Jr. at [email protected] with an abstract of 500 words or less of your proposed contributions and a brief bio. The abstract should clearly identify your research question, thesis, methods of analysis, results, and the disciplinary home of the research, if any. All abstracts are due December 1, 2017.

Call for Submissions for New Online APSA Resource “Politics, Power, and Group Differences: A Teaching Resource”

APSA is collecting teaching, learning and discussion resources on politics, power, and group differences. The collected resources will be shared online and using social media platforms. This project arose as a means to acknowledge the issues and debates that have re-surfaced into the public discourse as a result of the Charlottesville, VA protests and violence. In addition to the broad topic of power and group differences, we are inviting submissions from a variety of approaches that address the following themes, theories, and issues: politics of civil liberties, protest and counter-protest, bias, intersectionality, identity politics, critical race theory, race, racism, racial resentment, supremacy, intolerance, stereotype, political history and symbolism, nationalism, the politics of campus spaces and public spaces, and related topics. With the understanding that these social, political, and economic themes predate the events in Charlottesville, the goals of this project are to: 1) Shine a new light on these theories, as well as to highlight new and emerging theories and resources. 2) Identify scholarly expertise and potential collaborative networks in the aforementioned areas and fields of inquiry. 3) Identify a diverse array of political science themes and theories that can be brought to bear to assist students, faculty, and the public to better understand and dialogue about these issues in a constructive way. 4) Showcase the range and value of political science and political scientists’ contributions (both as a teaching discipline and a scholarly profession) to civil discourse and the civic capacity of the public. The following types of teaching and learning materials are welcome (this list is not exhaustive): · Course syllabi or curricula · Critical reading and thinking exercises
