PRONUNCIATIONS

THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE: UNH (1-1) beat New England College, 58-38, in its last game (Nov. 14). Junior forward Kat Fogarty led a well-balanced attack with nine points. Junior guard Aliza Simpson and sophomore forward Ashley Storey each had eight points and Storey led the team with 10 rebounds. Simpson made the ’Cats’ only three-pointer of the game. Fogarty, Simpson, and junior guard Brittni Lai each tallied two assists on the day. Junior center Carlie Pogue leads the team at 14.5 points per game. Lai follows at 10.5 points.

The Wildcats dropped their season opener, 61-56, at Cornell (Nov. 11).

SCOUTING KENTUCKY: The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team (2-0) is coming off a 70-46 win against defending America East champion University at Albany (Nov. 12). The Wildcats shot 37.9 percent to Albany’s 25.4. Senior 6-foot-3 forward Evelyn Akhator took the top spots in both points (28) and rebounds (13) against Albany. She averages 23 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, which are both team-highs. Senior guard Makayla Epps is averaging 18.5 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds through the first two games.

Kentucky beat No. 14 Miami, 82-66, in its season opener. The Wildcats moved up four spots in the Associated Press poll this week to No. 15. Matthew Mitchell is in his 10th season as head coach. Last year, he led the Wildcats to a 25-8 record. It was the sixth time in his nine seasons Kentucky has had at least 25 wins.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THE WILDCATS: This is the first battle of the Wildcats. UNH and Kentucky have never played each other.

DUE NEXT: UNH returns home to Lundholm Gymnasium for a two-game home-stand with games against Bryant on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. and against Wagner on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m.

GOOD SEATS ARE AVAILABLE: Individual and group tickets for UNH women’s basketball games are available at www.unhwildcats.com, by calling 603-862-4000 or at the Whittemore Center box office.

THIS YEAR THE SEC: UNH ventures into the SEC to take on Kentucky. Last year, the Wildcats played a pair of games against ACC schools. They lost at Boston College, 71-51, on Dec. 13 and then threw a scare into North Carolina before falling, 65-60, on Dec. 27. Senior guard Elizabeth Belanger scored 28 of UNH’s points at Chapel Hill.

SHE'S A HANDFUL: Akhator was named the SEC Player of the Week for her efforts in the team’s first two games, double-doubles against Miami and Albany. Her 28 points against Albany were a career high. Last year, her first as a Wildcat, Akhator had 13 double-doubles and picked up All-SEC second-team honors. Akhator came to Kentucky after helping her junior college team to a national championship.

DOUBLING UP: Carlie Pogue poured in 20 points and had 13 assists against Cornell to open the season with a double-double. Pogue had a single double-double last year as a sophomore with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Northeastern on Dec. 2, 2015. She had five double-doubles as a freshman.

JUNIOR NEWCOMERS: Brittni Lai and Kat Fogarty played their first game as Wildcats against Cornell. Lai had 17 points, led the team with five assists and was the only Wildcat to play all 40 minutes. Fogarty contributed five points and four rebounds. Both players started their careers at Marist College.

THE CAPTAINS: Graduate student Corinne Coia and juniors Peyton Booth and Kat Fogarty will serve as captains for the 2016-17 season. The NCAA granted Coia a medical redshirt giving her another year of eligibility for this season. However, injury issues will prevent her from playing.

COACH MAGS: A 2003 graduate of Marist College, Maureen Magarity begins her seventh season as UNH’s head coach. She has compiled an 86-95 record so far at UNH. She led the Wildcats to back-to-back winning seasons in 2013-14 when they went 19-12 overall and 2014-15 when they were 17-12.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT: UNH’s starting lineup on opening night was made up of all juniors. Pogue started 29 games last year, guard Aliza Simpson started 27 and guard Peyton Booth 18. Fogarty and Lai practiced with the team last season but did not play in games due to NCAA transfer regulations.

PORTLAND BOUND: After a couple of years in Binghamton, a couple of years in Albany and several years in West Hartford before that, the America East tournament is moving to a neutral site for the first time. The quarterfinals and semifinals of the America East Conference tournament will be played at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine, on Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and March 5, 2017. The championship game is set for Friday, March 10 at the home of the top seed remaining in the event.

LAST YEAR: UNH finished with a 12-18 overall record last year and earned the No. 7 seed in the league tournament with a 6-10 mark. The Wildcats lost in the quarterfinals to No. 2 Maine, 58-47.

Maureen Magarity (Marist ’03) completed her sixth year as head coach of the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team during the 2015-16 season. One of UNH’s top players in program history, Elizabeth Belanger, finished her career in style led by Magarity. Belanger finished her career with 1,453 points and 703 rebounds. She ranks fifth all-time in scoring, seventh in rebounding, and is one of only three Wildcats to eclipse 1,400 points and 700 rebounds.

Magarity became the sixth head coach in program history in May 2010 and the youngest coach of a Division I team – men’s or women’s – in the country.

Magarity has quickly made a positive impact on the program with three winning seasons in her first six years as head coach.

UNH finished the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 17-12 and 9-7 against America East opponents. The Wildcats finished the season fourth in the league standings and reached double digit wins for the fourth consecutive year. The Wildcats garnered four America East All-Conference accolades for the second straight year, the most the program has received since the 2001-02 season. Led by First Team honoree Elizabeth Belanger, the junior guard was joined by All-Academic and All-Defensive Team mention Kaylee Kilpatrick, Third Team honoree Ariel Gaston and All-Rookie Team member Carlie Pogue.

In 2013-14, Magarity led UNH to a 19-12 record and 12-4 in America East play, including a postseason appearance and the most wins (19) in over 16 years. During the 2013-14 season, Magarity guided the Wildcats to six consecutive wins and an 8-1 start to conference play, the best nine game conference stretch in program history. The Wildcats reached the America East Championship semifinal for the second consecutive year, which UNH has not accomplished since the 1988 and 1989 conference tournaments. New Hampshire again led the America East Conference in free throw percentage for the fourth consecutive season, powered by the program’s most efficient free throw shooter, Kelsey Hogan. The Wildcats had four student-athletes receive all-conference accolades. The award winning quartet consisted of First Team selection Hogan followed by Second Team mention Corinne Coia, Third Team honoree Elizabeth Belanger and All-Academic recipient Kaylee Kilpatrick.

Despite missing 14 games due to maternity leave during the 2012-13 season, Magarity guided the Wildcats to its first America East Championship semifinal appearance since 2005. Under the direction of Magarity, Hogan made the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to defeat Stony Brook University, 49-46, in the conference quarterfinals. The Wildcats had three representatives on the all-conference team, led by Second Team selections Cari Reed and Morgan Frame. Belanger garnered All-Rookie honors, the 12th Wildcat in program history to accomplish the feat.

In just her second year at the helm in Durham, Magarity guided the Wildcats to their second postseason appearance (beyond conference postseason play) in the program’s 37-year history when UNH advanced to the 2012 Women’s Basketball Invitational. New Hampshire finished the year with a 16-14 overall record to mark the team’s first winning season since 2006 and most wins since 2002. In comparison, UNH was a combined 33-87 the four years prior to her arrival.

Magarity earned a B.A. in Communications and Public Relations with a minor in Psychology from Marist College in 2003. In addition, she earned an M.P.A. in Public Administration while at Marist in 2005.

As a player, Magarity served as team captain her junior and senior seasons and led the Red Foxes to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. She garnered two All-MAAC Second Team selections, and was a 2004 MAAC All-Tournament Team choice. Magarity earned two MAAC Scholar-Athlete awards (2002, 2004) and received the James Pizzani Award for dedication and loyalty as a senior.

Before transferring to Marist, she played one season at Boston College. While at BC, the Eagles reached the semifinals of the preseason WNIT and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2000.

Magarity is a member of the WBCA and is a recent 2012 graduate of the WBCA Center for Coaching Excellence seminar.

Magarity, her husband Brendan, their three-year old daughter Charlotte and ten-month old daughter Caroline, reside in Nottingham, N.H.
