PROGRAMMING PREVIEW (cont’d)

Last but not least we have our personal development/wellness team, which consists of Stepha-nie Shaar, Krista Pershall, Janina Jones, and Wendy Wong. Alt-hough Wendy’s specialty is the workshop series, there is signifi-cant crossover so that all four work together and share contact names and potential course ide-as. Personal development courses help empower women in differ-ent spheres of identity. This win-ter we will feature The Science of Nutrition, Public Speaking and Beyond, and Discover Your Au-thentic Self through Art to name just a few. Holistic Journaling and Meditation will be returning. We are adding a French for Newcom-ers class to round out our French language courses, so should you know anyone arriving to the area who doesn’t speak French, tell her about us!

increased usage of regular daycare by members, but we do try to offer classes for preschoolers of all ages. Liliane Brunetti has taken charge of our fitness courses. Again she han-dles the communications with the instructors and keeps an eye out for new ideas. This winter, we are pleased to introduce a new Pilates course on Tuesday afternoons. We hope that the addition of this sec-ond Pilates course will enable us to meet the demand for this popular course. Nicole Anderson and Rebecca Charlton work on special interest courses. These are the crafting/hobby type courses that can make you smile at the end of the day. Knitting, Ballet, Watercolour and Bollywood at Night are just a few examples of the courses in this cat-egory – all of which will be return-ing this winter, along with some new classes!

(Continued from page 1) If you ever have an idea for a new course, know a possible instruc-tor, or want to join our team, come talk to one of us. Obviously, you can also talk with Connie Brown, our programming and membership coordinator, in the office. Connie is our heart and the pillar of this committee — helping us make everything possible. Enjoy your new winter session! Check us out on our website(www.wiwc.ca) and on Facebook too!

AROUND THE CENTRE . . .

And now it is time to look ahead to yet more fun and excitement in the weeks and months to come. Pre-Registration for the Winter Session As you no doubt have heard, the winter pre-registration sessions for current members will take place on November 19. If you miss the sessions, remember that the pre-registration period for current members continues until December 2 at 3 p.m. Your forms must reach the office (either by mail or in person) by that time. If not, your next opportunity to register will be on December 5 during our registration sessions for new members. December 6: Wear a White Ribbon It is very hard to believe, but this December 6th marks the 24th anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique massacre. On Friday, December 6, there will be white ribbons available at the Centre to help us remember the 14 women on our country’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Free Seminars in November We had a wonderful start to our year of free seminars with our October presentation on first aid.

For the month of November, two more Tuesday afternoon seminars are planned, as follows: Listening and Learning: Speech

and Language Development in Preschoolers on November 12 with Krystina Antonecchia, a speech-language pathologist

Reflexology on November 26 with Veronique Beniak, a certified reflexologist and Reiki master, and Cherie Griffiths, a natural health consultant and certified naturopath.

For more information, please go to our website and click on “Free Seminars” in the “Programs” menu or call the WIWC Office (514-695-8529). And tell a friend! Our seminars are free and open to the general public. Catch a Workshop Before They Go! It is not too late to participate in a workshop this fall. Our “10 Conversations to Have with Your Children” series continues until November 29th. And catch one of our “Flex” workshops — the topics are varied and always interesting. Be sure to watch your in-box for e-mails each week. You can also find out about upcoming workshops by clicking on “Workshops” on our website. Outreach Activities at the Centre and in the Community If you happen to come to the Centre on a weekday evening — you will (Continued on page 5)

I n the past few months, I have been really impressed by just

how much the Women’s Centre has to offer. This fall, our programming team went above and beyond by offering not one, but two workshop series for members and their guests. A short walk along our main hallway reveals all kinds of interesting happenings around the Centre — seminars, workshops, special events, wonderful activities in childcare, daytime and evening support groups… There is so much to see and do at the Centre — why not add something else to your schedule? We would love to see you more often! Behind every busy organization is an amazing crew of volunteers and staff that make it all happen. Special thanks go out this fall to a couple of extremely busy committees. Thank you to the programming team for all of the hard work they did to organize our winter session. Thank you too to the fundraising team for their tireless work on our silent auction fundraiser — it has been an incredible journey that started in the spring. So many people help make the Centre and its activities run smoothly — and the contribution each person makes is tremendously important to our organization. Please know that you are hugely appreciated!

AROUND THE CENTRE (cont’d)

find our organization teeming with life. In addition to our evening courses, two weekly support groups and a monthly group are offered to members and women in the community at large. Our monthly evening group is called “Healing Together.” The group, which helps women deal with a miscarriage, still birth, or infant death, meets on the second Wednesday of the month. In November, we introduced our new daytime postpartum group. These monthly meetings are opportunities for women to share the challenges and joys of new motherhood. By all accounts, the first meeting went very well, and the childcare team really enjoyed taking care of all the babies! The group meets on the first Tuesday afternoon of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for December 3 and newcomers are always welcome! A brand new crop of weekly support groups will begin in January. More information will be available soon.

In other outreach news, our weekly “Time for Two” arts and crafts programme for vulnerable families is going strong; high schools are scheduling our teen workshops for their students; and our “Making New Connections” programme for recent immigrants is being offered at Place Cartier’s Riverdale Campus this fall. You can see from the above that Outreach Coordinator Keri MacDonald, who joined us in late August, has no shortage of work on her hands. In the midst of managing all of these programmes, Keri also makes time to attend quite a few community meetings as well! One of the community groupings to which the Women’s Centre belongs is the Lac St. Louis/Dorval Early Childhood Network. On Wednesday, November 13, we will be hosting a “Coffee and Chat” event for parents of children from birth to 5 years that the network is organizing.

If you would like to have more information on any of the Women’s Centre’s outreach initiatives, Keri is the person to get in touch with. You can reach her by calling 514-781-8529 or e-mailing [email protected]. Holiday Basket Collection The Women’s Centre is collecting gifts and non-perishable food items for several West Island families this year. Look for a poster about the collection around the Centre. We will gladly accept your donations until Friday, December 13. We definitely are a busy place — and this busyness will continue until 3 p.m. on December 20 when the office officially closes for the holiday break. Best wishes to everyone for a healthy, happy holiday season — and a happy winter of activity at the West Island Women’s Centre! Karen Henchey Executive Director

Happy Baby News!

Congratulations to Isabelle Sayed, her husband Dino, and big brother Beni on the birth of Maya Luna on October 20th. For the past two years, Isabelle took wonderful

care of our organization’s outreach programmes. Now she has a new little one to care for and we wish her all the best!

Thank You to all of our Generous Supporters

Annual Silent Auction th The holiday season does not really

begin until a very important event

happens at the Women’s Centre.

This event, of course, is our

organization’s huge silent auction

fundraiser, which this year took

place on the evening of Friday,

November 8.

Each year, a huge number of

volunteers help with this event. Once

again this year, the auction was

expertly coordinated by the

volunteer/staff duo of Andrea Ivory

and Lisa Brousseau. They were

assisted by a silent auction

committee comprised of Lynn

Collins, Kim Harper, Brenda Lord,

Marie-Thérèse Ng, and Marie-

Claude Simard.

Many more volunteers joined in

the effort. They purchased

supplies, they baked, they made

follow-up calls to donors, they

collected items, and helped out

in a myriad of ways on November

8 from very early in the morning

until the wee hours of the

following day.

However, this event is only

possible thanks to the extremely

generous support of over 200

businesses who donated items or

services for auction. Each donor is a

hugely important Friend of the

Centre.

More than $17,000 was raised at

the event. These funds will help our

non-profit organization fulfill its

mission of improving the quality of

life of women. The money raised

helps the Women’s Centre to offer

a large selection of programmes

for our members at a reasonable

cost and outreach programmes for

women in the community at large.

Thank you for your generosity!

2014 Winter Session Registration

PRE-REGISTRATION

Pre-registration is available to all current members.

WINTER 2014 PRE-REGISTRATION SESSIONS The Winter 2014 pre-registration sessions will take place on: Tuesday, November 19

Afternoon Session: 1-3 p.m. Evening Session: 6:45-7:45 p.m.

NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL THE PRE-REGISTRATION SESSIONS ON NOVEMBER 19. If you do not attend any of the pre-registration sessions, you can mail your forms to the Centre or drop them off at the WIWC Office during office hours starting on Wednesday, November 20. (Please remember that the office is closed daily from noon until 1 p.m.) Registration forms will be processed according to the date and time they reach the office. Please take note: The pre-registration period ends at 3 p.m. on Monday, December 2. Registration forms received by the office (either by mail or in person) after that day and time are no longer eligible for pre-registration. If you miss this deadline, your next opportunity to register for the winter session will be on Thursday, December 5 at the registration sessions for new members.

OPEN REGISTRATION

Women wishing to become members must wait until our open registration day, which will be held on Thursday, December 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.

At Pre-Registration: Tickets for Popular Courses

If you are planning to pre-register for

one of our very popular courses, you

will receive a course ticket when you

arrive at pre-registration. The tickets

are a way for the programming com-

mittee to track registration for courses

that tend to fill up quickly. The ticket

system also reduces the problem of

members paying for courses that are

already full, and having to wait for a

refund cheque.

If you are registering for a friend, be

sure to also get tickets for your friend’s

courses.

Tickets are distributed in numerical or-

der from the first to the last spot in the

course. If you receive a ticket for a

course, it is very likely that you have

successfully registered for that course.

However, please keep in mind that er-

rors do sometimes occur and that the

course confirmation form sent out once

the registrations have been processed

is the best indication that you have suc-

cessfully registered for a course.

Please do not fill out your cheque be-

fore you come to the pre-registration

sessions so that you can avoid paying

for a course that is already full.

Please note the following:

Most classes run for 10 weeks, but please refer to the course list on pages 11 and 12 to find out the number of weeks of your course. Classes begin the week of January 13, 2014. Classes to be made up (due to holidays, can-cellations, etc.) will be scheduled during the make-up weeks.

Please note that there will be no classes during the school March break (March 3-7, 2014)

Our instructors will be making a special effort to start and finish classes on time, so please be prompt. We are of-fering a very specialized selection of courses this session and have worked hard to arrive at fair and economical fees. However, we must stress that we cannot run a course without a minimum number of participants.
