Women’s Basketball 12.1 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Maine women’s basketball program has had two lives. The first consisted of 11 seasons between the 1920 and 1931. In 1931, each of the four women’s sports programs in existence during the 1920s were discontinued. Following several years of informal organization during the early 1970s, the basketball program was resurrected in the fall of 1975 as an officially funded sport by the University. The Black Bears of the 1998–99 season became the first Maine team to advance beyond the first round of the NCAA tournament when it defeated nationalpower Stanford, 60-58, in the opening game of the tournament. Coach Peter Gavett’s 1985–86 team had a superb season, posting a 22-7 record including 18 straight wins before its first loss. Liz Coffin, one of the mostdominating players in UM history, averaged 20.3 points and 10 rebounds per game. She is one of only four Maine players to score more than 2,000 pointsin her career, and holds University records for most rebounds (380) in one season and in four seasons (1,351). 1996–97 — A POWERHOUSE SEASON

Led by Cindy Blodgett, Maine had another terrific season in 1996–97, winning 22 games, the America East title and a bid to the NCAA tournament. The Bearsscored over 100 points four times with Blodgett scoring a still-standing UM record 52 points vs. Towson. She was MVP of the conference, first team all-NewEngland, and first team, academic All-America. In the NCAA first round game at LSU, where the home team prevailed by only nine points, she scored 34 andJamie Cassidy had a UM post-season tournament record five blocks. Following is a report by Coach James Baldwin of the first game ever played by a Maine women’s team....

“This was the first varsity game in any sport ever played at the U. of M. by a girls’ team. There werethree 10-minute periods. When time was up the score was 13-13. In the overtime play the first basketwas scored by New Hampshire, thereby giving them the game. The game was well played and evenlycontested by both teams. About 300 attended the game in Alumni Gymnasium. The referee was MissGeneva Smith. Players for Maine were Capt. E. Weatherbee, M. E. Hodgdon, E. Ring, R. E. Hersey, A.Bean, H. M. Wessenger, E. Kritter, M. D. Chase, M. Morell, and T. J. Grover.”

1923–24 UNDEFEATED MAINE TEAM

The 1923–24 Maine team played only two games but won themboth, thus becoming the first and only undefeated team in UMwomen’s basketball history. Members of the team were, front row,l-r, Kathleen O’Leary, Catherine Clark, Capt. Kathleen Hunt, RuthCrockett, and Alma Perkins. Second row, l-r, Crystal Hughes andAnna Sargent. Back, Dorothy Dinsmore. The team was coachedby Theresa Huesman, who, in 1922, became the first director ofwomen’s athletics at Maine. Ms. Huesman, a graduate of the U. ofMinnesota, stayed in Orono for only two years.

1983–84 — A VERY GOOD YEAR

The 1983–84 edition of Maine women’s basketball saw Peter Gavett become head coach of the Black Bears, beginning a five-season tenure in which Maine posted a 106-37 record, a winning percentage of .741. Emily Ellis was a dominant player, averaging 22.4 points and seven rebounds per game. She finished her UM career with 1,696 points, a UM record at the time. Kneeling, l-r, Tri-Capt. 1995–96 — AN ASTOUNDING SEASON

Coach Joanne Palombo-McCallie’s 1995–96 team gained anational ranking with a University record 27 wins, includingan 18-0 record in America East play, a clean sweep of tournament games, and a berth in the NCAA tournament forthe second straight season. Maine’s legion of women’s basketball fans were excited in the summer of 2007 to learn that Cindy Blodgett had been selected byAthletic Director Blake James (left) and UM President Bob Kennedy(right) to become the tenth head coach in the program’s history.Blodgett, a 1998 UM grad, established numerous University andconference scoring records as an undergrduate and attracted tensof thousands of fans to Alfond Arena.

1979–80 — A TERRIFIC SEASON

Maine’s 1979–80 squad posted one of the best records in UM history, winning 16 of 20 games. Wendy Farrington, an all-Maine selection, set a one-gamerebounding record with 29 vs. USM, a record that still stands. She averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per game, while Barb Cummings and CzrystalPazdziorko were top rebounders as well, averaging 9.7 and 8.2 per contest. 1975–76 — AN HISTORIC SEASON

Women’s basketball reappeared on the UM sports scene in the winter of 1975–76 after an absence of 25 years. Eileen Fox was appointed to coach theteam and it posted a winning record, the first of eight consecutive winning seasons under the new mentor. 1997–98 — END OF AN ERA

The 1997–98 season was the final year for Cindy Blodgett in a Maine uniform. For the second time, she scored over 800 points with a career total of 3,005,remarkable numbers that may never be exceeded. The Black Bears, led by Co-Capts. Blodgett and Sandi Carver, posted a 21-9 record and, for the fourthconsecutive year, earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament after a pulsating 81-80 win over Vermont in the America East championship game. Maine compiled an outstanding record in the 1989–90 season, winning 23 out of 30 games and the America East championship, and earning a berth in theNational Invitation Tournament. 1999–00 — A VERY GOOD SEASON

The 1999–00 season marked the end of two successful tenures at Maine, those of Jamie Cassidy and Coach Joanne Palombo-McCallie. Cassidy poured in688 points for a total of 2,380 during her four seasons, third highest in UM history. Palombo-McCallie resigned after the season, her eighth at Maine with arecord of 167 wins and 73 losses. The Black Bears lost in the title game of the America East tournament to Vermont, but earned an invitation to the NCAAtournament where they lost by only five points to North Carolina in the opening round at UNC’s home court. 2002–03 — ANOTHER GREAT SEASON

Maine’s 2002–03 squad won 25 games including a perfect 16 wins without a loss in America East Conference play. The Black Bears lost to Boston U. inthe Conference title game, but earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. Heather Ernest was named player of the year in the conference, andCoach Versyp received the coach of the year award. Kim Corbitt was named defensive player of the year in the conference. 2003–04 — ANOTHER MAGNIFICENT SEASON

Coach Sharon Versyp’s club posted one of the truly outstanding records in UM history in the ’03–’04 season, winning 25 out of 32 games, including theAmerica East title and a trip to the NCAA tournament. The Bears won their three AE tournament games by an average of 21 points per game. HeatherErnest and Kim Corbitt were dominant players, Ernest (conference most valuable player) on offense (498 points) and Corbitt on defense (named AE defensive player of the year). AMERICA EASTThe primary focus for Maine since the mid 1980s has been competition in America East. The conferenceevolved from the Seaboard Conference, established in the 1984 and composed of Boston and Northeastern Universities, Brooklyn College, and the Universities of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.Central Connecticut State U. became a member in 1986. Brooklyn College and Central ConnecticutState U. resigned in 1989. The Seaboard Conference was merged into the North Atlantic Conference in1989 and the title was changed to America East in the late 1990s.

Colgate U. was a member for one season, 1989-90. Drexel U. and the U. of Delaware became membersin 1991. Hofstra U. became a member in 1994. Towson U. became a member in 1995. Drexel, Hofstra,and Towson Universities and the U. of Delaware resigned in 2001. The Universities of Albany and StonyBrook and Binghamton U. became members in 2000. The U. of Maryland at Baltimore County became a member in 2003. Northeastern U. resigned in 2004.
