LAST TIME OUT…

Delaware State got off to a slow start on the off ensive end for the second consecutive game, this time totaling 10 points on 4-for-28 (.143) shooting in the opening stanza on its way to falling 54-41 at home to the Mount St. Mary’s Mounts (1-1) this past Wednesday evening. When the fi nal buzzer sounded, the Lady Hornets shot just 22 percent (14-of-63) from the fi eld, whereas guard Mikah Aldridge poured in a team-high 11 points (4-of-18). Mount St. Mary’s, on the other hand, featured three players scoring in double fi gures, led by guard Alexis Carter’s 17 points (5-of-8). Carter also pulled down a game-high nine boards.

MILESTONE WATCH

Senior N’Kayah Kersey needs two more 3-pointers to push her career total to 70, placing her seventh on DSU’s all-time career list... Senior Amber Bogard is four away from reaching 40 career blocks as a Lady Hornet.

AT THIS POINT LAST SEASON…

The Lady Hornets were 0-2, coming off a 90-84 loss to Binghamton in the Akron Classic.

COMING UP NEXT…

The Columbia Blue & Red will return home to face Lehigh next Monday evening at 7 p.m. This will be the fi rst meeting the two programs.

DOUBLE TROUBLE DOWN LOW

An area of strength for the Lady Hornets this season will be the frontline duo of seniors Amber Bogard and Nikkei Blackburn. Bogard, who garnered Third Team Preseason All-MEAC honors, returns as DSU’s top scorer (13.1 ppg), shot blocker (22) and fi eld goal percentage leader (.503), while Blackburn returns as the Hornets’ leading rebounder (6.8 rpg). Bogard totaled two double-doubles last season, in addition to setting a new DSU single-game record for most blocks (7) against Norfolk State in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament. Blackburn also entered DSU’s single-game record books, pulling down a career-high 19 boards at Hampton for the seventh best performance in school history.

TREY TANDEM

Beyond the arc, the guard tandem of N’Kayah Kersey and Mikah Aldridge will pose a threat for opposing squads. Despite being listed at a generous 5-foot-4, Kersey currently sits 10th on DSU’s all-time list for most 3-pointers made (67). In the case of Aldridge, she led the Lady Hornets last season as a freshman in 3-pointers made (37), in addition to holding a 14-game streak of draining at least one trey.

ROAD WOES

Since beating North Carolina Central on the road, 58-49, on Feb. 2, 2013, the Lady Hornets have dropped 37 out of their last 41 games away from Memorial Hall. Last season, DSU played 20 out of its 32 games away from Memorial Hall, resulting in a 2-18 record.

REUNITED…AND IT FEELS SO GOOD

The Lady Hornets roster this season features two pairs of high school teammates, in addition to a player playing under her former high school coach. Senior Amber Bogard

and sophomore Mikah Aldridge were teammates at Beachwood High School (Ohio), while sophomore Bri Justice and freshman NaJai Pollard both starred at Highland Springs High School (Va.). In the case of freshman Ivana Negron, she played her junior season at Malcolm X. Shabazz (N.J.) under fi rst-year assistant coach Vanessa Watson.

OPERATION REVITALIZE

Since fi nishing 2008-09 at 15-15 (11-5 MEAC), the Lady Hornets have suff ered fi ve consecutive losing seasons, including posting a 11-37 mark in MEAC play and a 23-67 overall record the past three seasons. As for MEAC Tournament play, DSU’s last win occurred during the 2012-13 season with a 55-44 victory over Bethune-Cookman.

OLD HORNETS RETURN TO NEST

Head coach Barbara Burgess is not the only Hornet returning to their alma mater as a coach this season. Starring for Delaware State in 1989-93, assistant coach Donell

Thomas brings along an abundance of knowledge to the program. As a Hornet, Thomas helped lead Delaware State to two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament championship games (1991, 1993), in addition to serving as a team captain twice. His best season occurred during Thomas’ senior year, averaging 10.2 points, 8.1 rebounds (team-best) and 1.2 blocks (team-best) per contest.

FILLING THE VOID

Despite fi nishing 2014-15 at 5-25 (2-14 MEAC), the Lady Hornets will have to fi ll the void left by forward Tierra Hawkins (graduated) and guard Jade Washington (graduated). Hawkins – DSU’s lone All-MEAC honoree from last season – completed her stellar four-year career as the only other player in DSU history besides head coach Barbara

Burgess to fi nish with at least 1700 points, 800 rebounds and 70 blocks. Washington, meanwhile, wrapped up her fi nal year in a Hornet uniform as the program’s all-time assist leader with 312.

HORNETS TABBED TO FINISH 13TH IN THE MEAC

The Lady Hornets were picked to fi nish 13th (57 points) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Poll. North Carolina A&T totaled 310 points and 10 fi rst-place votes to earn the top spot. Last year, the Aggies fi nished third in the conference with a 12-4 mark and a 20-11 overall record. The Aggies return three starters from last year’s team with the addition of four newcomers. Hampton was picked to fi nish second with 307 points and 10 fi rst-place votes. The Lady Pirates recorded a 19-13 overall record and a 14-2 mark in MEAC play. Hampton received a bid to the Women’s NIT last season and defeated Drexel, 45-42, in the opening round before concluding the season with a loss to West Virginia in the second round. UMES (259 points) received three fi rst-place votes and was predicted to fi nish third, while Savannah State (239) - the 2015 MEAC Tournament champions - garnered one fi rst-place vote and Norfolk

RETURNERS

Outside of Amber Bogard, Nikkei Blackburn, N’Kayah Kersey and Mikah Aldridge, rounding out the list of returnees for the Lady Hornets are guards Aaliyah Davis, Aliah Stinnett, Bri Justice and center Janay Carter. Davis, a redshirt junior out of a Lincoln, Del., served as a team manager last season before being adding to the roster in late January. Appearing in 14 games, including three starts, Davis made a solid contribution, highlighted by a draining a full-court buzzer beater to defeat Bethune-Cookman at home, 72-71.

Stinnett’s defensive versatility in the backcourt will be a huge plus for the Lady Hornets, whereas Justice will look to bounce back after appearing in 14 games before suff ering a season-ending knee injury. Carter, who appeared in 21 games last season, will add depth and a defensive presence behind Bogard and Blackburn in the frontcourt.

FRESH FACES

Looking to make immediate impacts for DSU as freshmen in 2015-16 is guard Lorna Caesar, forward Sydni Eure, guard/forward Bobbi Floyd, forward/center Therese Gilmore, guard Ivana Negron and forward NaJai Pollard. Caesar hails from Philadelphia, Pa. by way of a Prep Charter (2011), Penn Wood (2012-14) and Imhotep Charter (2015). Throughout her prep career, Caesar was a part of three championship teams, including a Philadelphia Public League title winning squad during her lone season with Imhotep Charter. Hailing from Syracuse, N.Y., Eure was a three-year starter at East Syracuse Minoa High School, garnering Team Most Valuable Player honors as a senior. Floyd, a Las Vegas, Nev. product out of Ed W. Clark, averaged double fi gures in points and rebounds all four years, while earning All-State honors as a senior. In the case of Gilmore, a native of Temple Hills, Md., she will add size and rebounding to DSU’s frontline, whereas Negron brings a championship pedigree from Malcolm X. Shabazz (Newark, N.J.). Playing her junior season under current DSU assistant coach Vanessa

Watson, Negron led the team to a sectional and state championship titles. As for Pollard, she averaged a double-double in her fi nal three seasons at Highland Springs (Richmond, Va.), garnering All-Metro and All-State honors as a junior and senior.

2015-16 Delaware State Women’s Basketball | Game 3 | Nov. 20

DSU President Harry L. Williams and Interim Athletics Director Louis “Skip” Perkins announced the appointment of Barbara

Burgess, one of the greatest players in Delaware State University women’s basketball history, as the school’s ninth head coach on May 5, 2015.

Her appointment marks the second time that a former Lady Hornet player has headed the DSU women’s basketball program. Jackie Devane was head coach from 1995-00 after competing for the team from 1979-83.

“Barbara stood out among some outstanding candidates for the position, not just because she’s a Lady Hornet alum, but because of her highly successful experience as a teacher of the game and recruiter, as well as her commitment to academics

and community service,” Perkins said. “We believe Barbara will bring a high level of excellence back to the Lady Hornet program she helped to make so successful as a student-athlete.”

Burgess, who starred for the Lady Hornets from 1985-89, most recently served as an assistant coach at Delaware State’s highly successful MEAC rival Hampton University the past six seasons. While at Hampton, Burgess helped lead the Lady Pirates to fi ve MEAC Tournament titles, fi ve regular season crowns and six national championship tournament appearances.

During Burgess’ tenure as an assistant coach, the Lady Pirates won a MEAC-record fi ve consecutive tournament championships (2009-14). Hampton posted an overall record of 146-48 (.753), including an 88-8 mark (.917) in MEAC regular season play, in addition to winning 54 consecutive games against league opponents (including tournament games).

“We believe that Barbara’s championship experience at Hampton, along with the intensity and passion she developed in her playing days with the Lady Hornets will greatly benefi t our women’s basketball program,” Dr. Williams said.

Prior to her time at Hampton, Burgess served one season as an assistant coach at Norfolk State University (2008-09). She was also the head women’s coach at Virginia Union University from 1999-2001, posting a 13-39 overall record.

As a high school coach, she manned the sidelines for six years (2002-08) as the head women’s basketball coach at Phoebus High School (VA). The Phantoms were 73-67 in her tenure, making three trips to the Eastern Region tournament. From 1992-99, Burgess was the head women’s basketball coach at Huguenot High School (VA). She was named Dominion District Coach of the Year in 1997 after leading Huguenot to a 14-9 record. The following year, the Lady Falcons were runners-up in the Dominion District Tournament. Throughout her 14 years at the helm in the high school ranks, Burgess mentored several players who have gone on to play at the collegiate level, including former Howard University standout Essence Coggins (Huguenot).

Burgess was a four-year Black College All-American for DSU (1985-89) on the court. She was named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team and ended her career with the Lady Hornets as the school’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,807 points, a spot she currently still holds. During her sophomore season, she led the team in scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) and was named to the All-MEAC First Team. Her junior campaign featured leading Delaware State in scoring (17.1 ppg) on her way to another All-MEAC First Team selection. Burgess wrapped up career garnering DSU Female Athlete of the Year in 1988-89, in addition to leading the Lady Hornets to the 1989 MEAC Tournament Championship game.

Burgess graduated from Delaware State in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education and was inducted to the DSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. She also received her master’s degree in sports management from California (Pa.) University.

Burgess is a native of Richmond, Va. and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
