IS IT TRUE?
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
IT DOESN’T MATTER
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
When a person enters a situation
where they know that they may be judged because of
their identity,and when success really
matters
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
WE BECOME VIGILANT.
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
SUBCONSCIOUSLY ANXIOUS.
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
THE EFFECT IS TAXING.
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
IT DIMINISHES PERFORMANCE
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
AND MAKES US LESS LIKELY TO PUT
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
OURSELVES IN THAT SITUATION AGAIN.

CUES MATTER
1. Critical Mass: 33% will reduce the effect
2. Neutralizing language
“I believe that you can be great at...”
“People like...do well here”
3. Change your internal narrative
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
HOW DOES IT FEEL WHEN
YOU’RE TRYING TO GET “IN”?
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
1. BELIEF: This is a meritocracy
2. DOUBT: Why is this so hard?
3. AWARENESS: Maybe it’s hard because I’m different.
4. BELIEF: I’m up to the challenge!
4 Steps To Owning It
LUXR.CO DECEMBER 2011
1. In any situation where you want to change the balance, aim for 50%, settle for 33%.
2. If there is an opportunity to write or speak in public, say yes.
3. If you say yes, don’t cancel.
4. If you have to cancel, don’t blame your kids.
5. If you get clobbered, invite them to shut the fuck up.
6. If they ask you about child care, suggest that they ask Dave Hornik or Jay Adelson how they manage.
7. Don’t flirt.
8. Be yourself. Really a lot.
What I’m asking of you
