BY JAMES MAIMONISHometown Weekly Staff

According to the latest “State of Women-Owned Businesses Report,” the number of businesses owned by women inMassachusetts as of 2007 was 178,114 and is estimated to reach 193,900 by the end of 2012. Sales are also projected

to grow immensely, from $25,487,227 in 2007 to $29,365,800 in 2012.

Many of these entrepreneurs own and operate their businesses right in your hometown, many of which might be of interest to you. From dance and art studios to eye care and daycare canters, these women have taken personal interests

and hobbies and transformed them into successful local businesses.

A heavily researched study conducted by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) showed that from 1979-2010, self-employment for women has increased by 45%.

These numbers suggest that women are no longer waiting to have their voices heard, but instead are taking matters into their own hands and seeing their businesses flourish.

In order to survive and compete in the heavily, male-oriented business world, these women must show persistence anddetermination in order to keep their businesses afloat through thick and thin, essential characteristics of any business owner.

Come support women in both your town and neighboring towns by checking out these local businesses and helpMassachusetts become an even more appealing place for businesswomen to excel.

HOWWE STARTEDMae Sullivan had been accompanying family members to doctor’s appointments and treatments when shenoticed that there were some patients in the waiting room who were all alone, in every sense of the word. Manyhad to arrange their own transportation without the help of their busy friends and families. Mae’s compassionfor others, combined with her experience in both the insurance and automobile industries, grew into an idea thatbecame Guardian Medical Companions. Mae’s business partner, Deidre Fisher — a friend Mae had gotten to know over several years through carpoolingtheir children to school — joined forces with Mae. Deidre has a business background in marketing research andstrategic planning. With family members working in the medical field, Deidre was all too familiar with the lackof options available for transportation and the difficulty individuals can have finding family and friends that areavailable to drive them or “sign them out” after procedures requiring anesthesia. In July, 2010, after months of research and planning, Guardian Medical Companions was born.

WHATWE DOGuardian has been providing rides and companionship to individuals in the Greater Boston area, driving to allthe major hospitals in Boston as well as local hospitals and clinics within a 30+ mile radius of their Newton base.Companions are friendly, warm, and provide clients a feeling of security. Guardian wants its clients to see themas an extension of their family when their families or friends are busy or living far away. Guardian’s tagline of“Don’t Go Alone” is its guiding principle. Companions can also stay with clients in the waiting room, assist them with check-in and check-out, providean extra set of “ears” during the medical appointment, help with making future appointments, along withcommunicating information to family members.

F rom as far back as I can remember I was happiest whendancing. My professional career began at age 14, when Iperformed in the Merry Widow at the Boston Opera
