March 18 & 19, 2017 The Third Sunday of Lent
Funeral Ministry
When a family loses someone they love, they are often left
feeling the ache of sadness and yet, are asked to make many, many decisions. At these difficult moments, any help
the church can provide in caring for families who are sad and vulnerable, is often greatly appreciated. The Funeral
Mass, or the Mass of the Resurrection, is a time when people can bring their sadness, their prayers, their hopes,
and their needs to God.
We have been blessed in our parishes in Millbury with a wonderful ministry of consolation and service provided by
the Angels of Mercy who welcome worshipers and mourners to the Funeral Mass and serve in various liturgical roles as
needed. In the past, Assumption Parish had an adult funeral ministry of its own. Here would be an opportunity to expand the liturgical ministry of funerals at both parishes.
This would be an opportunity to serve God in the church by assisting the Celebrant and Deacon at Funeral Liturgies.
Those who participate in this ministry vest themselves in the alb which recalls our baptism and our being clothed in the
robe of the elect at our birth into new life. They would, through this liturgical ministry, lend dignity to the Mass of the
Resurrection, represent the whole parish community as ministers of comfort and join families in praying for the
soul of the one who has died.
Since funeral masses are usually celebrated in the morning, we would love to invite adults who would be free during
week day mornings to serve as acolytes and cross bearers in a liturgical ministry. We would like to develop teams
composed of three individuals each so that the teams could serve as a unit and would not be called upon
to the point of burden.
There will be two training sessions. One will be held on March 20 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at
11:30 AM and the other on March 28 at St. Brigid Church at 12:30 PM. We would ask that you make every effort to
attend both training sessions. Please prayerfully consider this new opportunity
to become involved in this Funeral Ministry.
If interested, please return this cut out, call 508-865-6624 or email secretary @stbrigidparish.org before March 20
th.

Two thieves go into confession. The first one confesses that it had been several years since his last confession
and that he just stole from someone.
The priest told him that this was a very serious sin and that he should not do that again. He gave him as his
penance to do the stations, since it was Lent.
So the first thief left and the second thief went into the confessional. He confessed the same sin and was given
the same advice and penance to do the stations.
Afterwards, the two thieves were on the front steps of the church. They asked one another if they got a weird
penance for confessing that they stole. When they told one another that their penance was to do the stations,
they both were surprised.
So the second thief said to the first, “Well we better get a move on it. You do the Gulf Station and I will do
the Mobil Station!”

March 18 & 19, 2017 The Third Sunday of Lent
Spotlight: ZAMBIA
Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person
Encounter Evelina
Evelina, like generations of Zambians before her,
used to survive on meals made from corn flour,
usually a porridge called “nshima.” “Growing up, I’d
eat porridge in the morning, at lunchtime and again
in the evening,” she says. After all, it was cheap
and easy to make.
Unfortunately, nshima has very little nutritional
value—and relying too heavily on it has led to high
rates of malnutrition. Many in Zambia have full
bellies, but little nourishment. And this is
particularly dangerous for children under the age of
two, who need high levels of vitamins and minerals
to grow up healthy and strong. That means
mothers who are nursing—as well as their
children—need nutritious meals.
With our help (Rice Bowls), CRS is teaching women
like Evelina, how to prepare healthier meals and
grow new, vitamin-rich crops like peanuts,
pumpkins and sugar cane. Now, Evelina and others
are adding more nutritious food to their children’s
nshima: ground peanuts or eggs, for example.
What the women learn, they share with their
community—especially expectant mothers.
“We sing and dance during the cooking lessons
because we are happy to learn how to cook
different types of food,” says Evelina. Evelina is
healthier, and so is her son, Steven. “I know I am
taking good care of him, because he’s full of
energy, he’s strong and never sick,”
she says, with a smile.
Notre Dame Academy’s Spring Open House for
prospective students will be held on Sunday, March 26th
from 2 - 4 PM. Students currently in fourth, fifth, sixth,
seventh, and eighth grade are encouraged to attend. If you
are interested in attending NDA’s Open House, please
contact their Office of admissions at 508-757-6200,
Ext. 229 or email [email protected]. NDA is the
only Catholic private and independent college preparatory
school for young girls in grades 7 - 12 in Central
Massachusetts. Please visit their website

the NDA experience.

How about making a Cursillo weekend?
Cursillo or "short course in Christianity" is an uplifting and educational experience. Cursillo was brought from
Spain to the United States in 1962. The weekend is facilitated by a team of laypeople and clergy who deliver organized talks and discussions. What the presenters add to the talks is the witness of their own lives, their
struggles and triumphs in Christ. The weekend is full of laughter, prayer, great music, wonderful meals and so
much more. Our 2017 dates are: Women’s - May 18-21 & October 12-15; Men’s - June 22-25. All weekends will
be held at the Immaculate Conception Spiritual Renewal Center in Putnam, CT. For additional
information, please contact Sue Leighton at 508-278-3155 or [email protected] OR Joan Laracy at
774-239-2474 or [email protected].
