JPTORRES SUCCESS ACADEMY CORE STRATEGIES

CORE STRATEGY 1: COLLABORATIVE TEAM

• We are currently working within our content area departments to share best practices and align curriculum.

• We will continue to develop and build authentic Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) that uses student data to guide teaching and learning.

CORE STRATEGY 2: CIA • At the beginning of the school year we

have established Agreed Upon Processes that include behaviors that teachers should exhibit at the beginning of class, end of class, while engaging in group work, while distributing materials, teacher led-activities.

• Recently, we were trained on category “Setting Objectives” under Component I of Classroom Instruction That Works! Framework and how objectives are written and embedded into the day’s lesson using the Know, Understand, and Be Able To (KUD) format.

• Walkthroughs are ongoing and will continue to focus on classroom

CORE STRATEGY 3: SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

• We have established our Village Circles

in which teachers (Village Elders) are focused on offering personalized social and emotional support for students.

• This is time in the school day where we get to know our students, set goals, aid in understanding their academic standing and develop plans for their future.

CORE STRATEGY 4: COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

The following are groups we have been in communication with and the type of support they will be able to provide as we partner with them in helping our students succeed.

(1) AmeriCorps & Justice Corps - Volunteers of up to 30 are able to provide 1-1 mentoring as well as homework assistance. After students successfully complete this program, they will also become volunteers for justice corps and receive the benefits. (2) Pacific Human Resource Services (PHRS) - All faculty and staff will be give in depth training to implement and facilitate seven habits of highly effective people (for teens/college). Each student will then be taught these skills during village circle and reinforced during academic classes. (3) Guam National Guard - We have met with Captain Guerrero and Colonel Crisostomo to discuss ways in which we can help assist our students who endeavor to join the military. We will provide more input as soon as the details become clear. (4) Department of Labor/Work Keys - We plan to provide all 50 potential students with work experience through the Department of Labor. Currently, Rose Munoz is in direct contact to integrate the curriculum with the work keys assessment and AHRD criteria. Our goal is to ensure students are motivated with the career/technical education path. 5) 33rd Guam Legislature – We have met with Education Chairperson Senator Underwood to promote our mission at JP Torres. She has been an advocate for our youths and will brain storm policies that will help our youths with their careers or college endeavors.
