Hello ReadersAs summer splendour settles over our 'Sceptred Isle', readers might be reassured to know that we at Wolverhampton West are in the best of health. You won't find any 'hacking' coughs here: nor must you worry that, without warning, the publication now in your hands will be swept away to history.

We intend to stand firm and serve our public - and put before you, with as many pleasantries as we can muster, the peerless array of consumer excitables: all waiting within the lagoon of luxury that is Wolverhampton.

For a proper 'Swallows and Amazons' excursion into the world of practical fancy, lets push the boat out, raise the sail and see what's waiting out there across the limpid waters.

First port of call on the island of fashion might be to star of TV, Lisa Shepherd's salon. Setting sail once more, the roar from the nearby shore alerts you to the dynamic presence of a BMW at full throttle. You might even catch sight of the driver (your very own fashion correspondent) waving.

But be quick! A BMW Z4 doesn't hang about and no number of spinnakers will put one of those magnificent cars in a spin - even if it is driven by Helen Jane eager to put a new hair lacquer to the test in an open top. And talking of spins, cynical readers might conclude that it's the editorial team that's in a spin - to which the Editor can only respond "Shiver me timbers! Hoist the mainsail and bring the treasure on home".

Which is exactly what we hope we have accomplished in the pages of this issue.

Enjoy your read... Geoff

Wolverhampton Rugby Union Football Clubs first Sportsman’s Lunch was held on Friday 10th June at their ground in Castlecroft. The club was founded in 1875 and has three senior teams, a colt’s team and one of the best Mini Junior groups in Staffordshire.Recent honours include the U17 County Champions and being one of the top 16 in the U17 national trophy and the Colts team winning three major cups this year. The club has also this year started a very successful women’s team who will soon need their own changing rooms and facilities. The lunch attracted many top local companies including Nat West Bank, Price Pearson, FBC Manby Bowdler and Audi Wolverhampton. In total around 400 business people from in and around Wolverhampton attended the event, with generous sponsorship by Kevin Beasley and his team from Tile Choice. The event was designed not only to raise much needed funds but also to create links with local companies that will be

essential in moving forward with the redevelopment plans of the club. These plans include a new entrance with much needed disabled toilets, kitchen extension and new function room as well as player’s treatment room and gym.

Guests were invited to sit down to a three course lunch and entertained by host Roger Dakin and guest speakers for the world of international rugby, Jason Leonard, current England forward Steve Thompson and Mervyn Davies the ex Welsh international. Guests were also joined by Wolverhampton’s Rugby Clubs U17 England Rugby international Ollie Claxton.

There were also some great prizes on offer including a Tag Heuer watch from Ian Rigby Jewellers in Codsall worth over £1,000

Commenting, Martin Hawkins, WRUFC Chairman said “The response from the local business community has been overwhelming. The comments from everyone I have spoken to has been very positive with many companies looking to give their support to the rugby club.”

The event is set to be a regular event in the social calendar with next years event already being planned with more major rugby names being attracted to the club.

Towards the end of the 19th century printed particulars measured approx 18ins x 12ins and the ones in our archives were printed by Steens in the Old Grammar School Buildings. They included large fold out coloured plans. The auctioneers were T J Barnett who were one of the forerunners of Walker, Barnett and Hill and in one set they proudly announced that during the year they had held monthly auctions, with multiple lots in each, together with several individual sales and the total sales amounted to £100,000. How things have changed.

Some particulars of sales of local estates such as Wergs Hall and Wrottesley Hall in the early part of the 20th century were works of art with beautifully coloured plans and oval sepia photographs which faded off to the edges. The amount of time taken to produce such publications must have been considerable.

By the 1950’s standard sale particulars were typewritten on skins and duplicated by Gestetner machines which were good at putting ink everywhere except where it should have been! Auction details at the time were properly printed but photographs were not used. This, and for the next 25 years , was the time when auction was the way to obtain the best price for properties which were expected to create demand and Walker, Barnett and Hill continued to hold sales monthly. This was also

the time when auctions of house contents were held on the premises and there were many superb country house sales where the next generation did not want to keep the fine period furniture, porcelain, silver and pictures which their parents had collected. The younger generation then preferred “G plan” which many have lived to regret!

Gradually presentation developed with stick-on black and white photos being introduced followed by printed photos with colour photos eventually appearing in the 1970's. By 1980 laminated brochures with a photographic front cover and full descriptions were in vogue. Floor plans were introduced during the 1990's and eventually photos and plans became more important than detailed descriptions of the interior. Printing, photography and the necessary technology have all advanced and today’s sale particulars have reached a high standard.

I have been taken to task by another agent in another publication for giving too optimistic reports on the state of the market. I take the view that when reporting to the public it is essential to be accurate and honest in my appraisal. Of course, I can only report on the experiences of my own firm and it is possible that other firms have different results. This year January was bad news due to the extended snow and ice which

is not conducive to selling houses but February and March exceeded our expectations. April was not so good but the target for our Tettenhall office was to agree, on average, one sale per weekly working day during February, March, April and May. This was achieved and whilst not a record it certainly seems to be better than the experiences of my critic! I was also held to task for stating that the long term trend in house prices was upwards. Of course there are ups and downs but if we remember that the three bedroom semi was worth £2,000 fifty years ago and is now worth almost £200,000, I think that the case is made.

June was again a month which showed reasonable sales, only two below our target, but it was a low target and although sales are still there they are difficult to come by. As I said last month there is still some life in the market but it needs careful nursing and it will not get better until confidence returns.

The Local Property Market by Nick Berriman

Looking through some old sale particulars the other day which dated from the 1890s I realised how much things had changed over the years and thought it might be of interest to trace some of the developments.

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre’s beautiful Victorian horseshoe auditorium is widely regarded as giving audiences the most atmospheric and intimate theatregoing experience in the Midlands. Built in 1894 the Grand has been presenting top quality theatre for well over a century, but since the early 1980s its activities have been supported by the Friends of the Grand, one of the largest theatre Friends groups in the UK, and one with plenty to celebrate in 2011.

In 1980 a group of vocal supporters of live theatre in Wolverhampton, regular theatregoers and members of the original Theatre Club came together to address one of the biggest setbacks that the Grand had faced in its 85 year history - the prospect of permanent closure (and even demolition!) due to growing financial difficulties. Thanks to tireless campaigning spearheaded by the Save The Grand Action Group a solution was reached and with massive help from the local authority, the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre (1982) Ltd was formed – the independent charitable trust that has run the theatre ever since. In anticipation of the Theatre’s re-opening the Theatre Club and Save the Grand Group combined to become the Friends of the Grand.

Since those days the Grand has notched up a number of achievements, including its centenary in 1994, a huge refurbishment in 1998, and more recently Grand Memories, a major heritage project with lottery funding as part of a developing programme of education and outreach work. The Friends of the Grand is in a unique position to assist the Grand Theatre in achieving some of its objectives, with donations aimed to enhance the experience of visitors

to the Theatre, either as patrons or touring company members. There is also an ongoing commitment from the Friends to support the activities of the Theatre’s Education Officer and the development of the GET-IN! Youth scheme.

Since its foundation three decades ago Friends of the Grand has gone from strength to strength, with almost 3000 memberships taken up for the current year alone. “This anniversary year is a great time to consider joining,” says current chair Gordon Hands. “A subscription to the Friends not only brings a range of benefits including priority booking, exclusive events and big discounts, but also contributes to the ongoing success of one of the UK’s most beautiful and best-loved theatres.”

Here’s to the next thirty years!

As the slump in house prices shows little sign of easing, more frustrated homeowners will be tempted to let rather than sell their homes in 2011, predicts leading Wolverhampton-based lettings bosses Aman Sirpal and Sarika Sirpal. The phenomenon coined ‘Accidental Landlords’ describes homeowners who turn landlords in a bid to tough out the housing market downturn or who simply cannot sell their property.

But Aman Sirpal, Managing Director, Surelet Property Rental Services in Wolverhampton warns: “As we approach the summer, a time when people are looking to ‘sell-up’, homeowners considering changing tactics should go into it with their eyes-wide-open. Consider all the pitfalls and if unsure consult a professional letting agent.”

“Despite the stagnation in house prices and the crash in the economy, some homeowners simply need to move” says Aman.

“Soaring unemployment, exacerbated by the predicted public sector cuts might force people to relocate, or naturally as their family grows, so do their property demands.

“In contrast people struggling to pay their mortgage might be considering downsizing, choosing to let rather than be forced to sell completely.”

”But homeowners are facing a magnitude of problems when searching for a buyer, lenders aren’t lending and the criteria to secure funds has become more stringent, leaving many homeowners feeling

uneasy about selling their property for a lower-than-expected asking price.”

According to the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) in October 2010, 34 per cent of member offices in the third quarter of 2010 had seen an increase in the number of rental properties coming onto the market because they couldn’t be sold. This was up 19 per cent compared with the second quarter of that year.

“And Surelet, Wolverhampton has seen the Accidental Landlord overtake the buy-to-let landlord by as much as 35 per cent the last three months”. Adds Sarika.

“It can be a daunting experience taking the plunge and becoming a landlord, especially when it’s not something you had planned for.”

“What tenants will I attract? ‘Will they pay my rent’, ‘Will my home be protected?’ and ‘Where do I start?’,

are just some of the most frequently asked questions we get.

“There are many crucial things that every landlord must consider, for example each home must have an Energy Performance Certificate and Building and Contents and Public Liability Insurance; without the right experience and knowledge things can be missed and mistakes made.

“Many homeowners who take this route will already have full-time careers or a family to look after, so by choosing an experienced and professional letting agent the management process can be taken out of their hands.

“At Surelet we offer a cost-effective fully-managed service, conduct stringent credit checks, follow-up references, define a tenancy agreement, liaise with the tenant, produce an inventory, and even include Rent Guarantee Insurance. This means even if your tenant doesn’t pay, we will pay you.”

Shortly after deforestation in 1221, a charter for a Friday market in the village was granted by the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, bringing considerable growth to an area already blessed with good communication links, provided by the Watling Street (A5) Roman road. From this point on the village flourished.

A church was promptly installed and settlers soon followed. And to this day, the medieval parish church - Saint Mary the Virgin and Saint Chad – still beckons us to its door; its 13th Century chancel and 14th Century nave the most obvious relics from the original plan, since the majority of the building was overhauled in the following two hundred years.

The grammar school, with its distinctive bell turret, founded by Edward VI is still here, having replaced a chantry school founded in the previous century when all chantries were suppressed. It was once the site on which a young

Samuel Johnson – of dictionary fame – sought the lowly post of usher, only to be denied by the master of the school, fearing that Johnson's famously eccentric tics and odd gestures (since thought to be a form of Tourette's Syndrome) would see him the butt of many schoolboy jokes.

Among the other delightful period houses in the village, some Queen Anne and many of them timbered, Brewood Hall was built as a home for the wealthy Fowkes family. An imposing property, with garden walls and gate piers, erected in Sparrows End Lane in 1640 and now Grade II listed.

In later years the village has become a mecca for a number of rock n' roll luminaries: Roy Wood of Wizzard schooled his daughter in the area; Jim Lea of Slade lives on the outskirts; George Harrison once visited for a wedding and Babylon Zoo singer Jas Mann is rumoured to have bought a house near the church.

Other more notable residents of the village include the Giffard family, whose main local seat was, and still is, Chillington Hall. For over 800 years the family have been residents in the area, ever since Norman Giffard married the heiress to Chillington Castle in 1178.

They owned Boscobel House and the Pendrell family were in their service in 1651, so it was the Giffard’s who indirectly made possible the escape of Charles II after the battle of Worcester. Could it be that they too are rewarded each year for services to the Crown?

Bygone Brewood

by Rob Taylor

Until some 800 years ago, Brewood was a royal forest – in fact its name means either “wood on or by a hill” or “wood near a place called Bre” - before King John declared it 'disafforested' and decreed all of its people free from the penalties resulting from the dreaded forest poaching laws.

Recipe of the month

500g lamb mince

75g feta cheese

1 small red onion,

finely diced

1 egg

A few sundried

tomatoes

1 tsp fresh mint,

chopped

Salt and pepper

1. Combine the mince, onion and egg in a large bowl. With scissors, snip the sundried tomatoes into small pieces and crumble the feta cheese, before adding to the bowl. Sprinkle in the mint and season well, giving a good stir.

2. Next, it’s time to get your hands dirty. Mould your mixture into balls and squash, making four burger shapes. Wrap these in cling film, then pop into the fridge for half an hour so that they keep their form while cooking.

3. Get the barbeque ready for cooking, or heat the grill to a medium/high temperature and cook the burgers on a rack for around twenty minutes, turning once, until they are cooked through.

4. Pat them with kitchen roll before serving between ciabatta or good quality rolls with fresh green salad and wedges of lime.

5. For a tasty burger relish, combine a little diced red onion and cucumber with several large dollops of mango chutney, a good splosh of lemon juice and a sprinkling of parsley. Alternatively a chilled raita (yoghurt and mint dressing) will complement these perfectly.

MethodMakes 4 Ready in 30 minutes(+30 minutes for chilling)

It’s barbeque time and here’s a sizzling recipe that will give burgers a delicious twist. Though the English weather may be unpredictable, these are sure to come out a treat every time – whether you cook them outside in the sunshine or inside under the grill.

At our recent changeover meeting Tettenhall Inner Wheel Club President Shirley Jones handed over the chain of office to incoming President Lynne Cave who is taking on the position for the second time (Photo top left).

Following a very successful year the club were able to make donations to representatives from The West Midland Lupus

Group (photo top right) and to Emma Dowler from The Alzheimer’s Society (photo top middle) who were both presented with a cheque of £1500.

These funds were raised from several events held during Shirley’s year in office. Our major fund raising event ‘The World of Musical

Theatre’ presented by The Wolverhampton Musical Comedy Company held at Perton Community Centre was a huge success.

Over the past 28 years Tettenhall Inner Wheel Club has raised substantial funds for both local and overseas charities, and will continue to do so during the coming year.

The number one choice for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.

It is often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home and these days that sentiment has never been more apparent. As a computer-aided design programme allows the customer to experience their new room prior to installation.

Everything from off-the-shelf simplicity to bespoke project management, it’s all available in store or in your home. And you can have as much or as little to do with the evolution of your kitchen design as you want to, always assured that you’ll be supported by a team of professionals who have seen and done it all before.

Company Director, Lloyd Pitt, explains:

“Our installation teams are made up of my two brothers, so you can be confident knowing your new room will be installed by us and not sub-contracted out.”

Indeed, the family run business is proud of the unique space it occupies in a marketplace overrun with faceless high street chains.

“All of our products are of the highest quality: we offer value for money with a professional service without the gimmicks.”

But not all of the activity takes place in the kitchen, as Eaton extend their talents to bedroom and bathroom designs also.

“We undertake all aspects of internal building alterations so we

can manage most projects without the client having to employ other contractors.”

Bathroom and bedrooms are no more of a challenge to the versatile team and will delight in equal measure to their kitchens.

So if your house is crying out for a makeover but you are not quite sure which improvements will suit it best, give Eaton Kitchens a call and let them inspire you with their innovative designs.

When it comes to interior design, project management and carpeting Cora Turner-Collis can wipe the floor with the best. From one-room designs to 84 bedroom nursing home schemes Cora

takes great pride in personal service, attention to detail and practical advice.“It doesn’t matter if I am working on a large or small project I always believe in treating clients like I’d like to be treated if I had some work carried out in my own home,” says Cora.

And Cora knows what it’s like when it comes to home improvement having done-up and sold five substantial properties in the last seven years.

Her two decades’ work in the flooring industry coupled with a degree in textiles and design combined with a passion for refurbishing houses gives Cora a wealth of experience.

“I set up Virgo Carpets and Interiors, based in Seisdon, more than eight years ago and am able to bring my expertise and experience to clients whether it is a domestic or commercial property either new build

or simply refreshing and updating an interior.”

Cora visits clients at their homes or business to discuss needs, personal tastes and then once a plan is agreed source carpets, curtains, furniture and even accessories.

“It is all about personal service and good project management,” she says.

And when it comes to her own home she’s not shy in sharing her décor tips having recently taken part in filming for the ITV series called May the Best House Win.

Based on a similar concept to Come Dine With Me, Cora has put her home up for scrutiny by three other homeowners who vote on their favorite property.

“The programme goes out in the autumn. I don’t mind where I come as long as it’s not last!” she adds.

John Henn of T.A. Henn Jewellers in Wolverhampton Finally Conquers Mont Blanc

The three-day climb covering some 3010 vertical meters to the summit and started on a glorious Thursday morning. We drove to the end of the road and started walking through the green meadows above St Gervais. Marmots played in the sunshine as we continued along the disused cog railway track. It had been built originally to reach the top of the mountain as part of a local Mayoral ego trip but stopped on the break out of the First World War. The train does still run between June and August, today it was nowhere to be seen.I should mention at this stage that after last year’s failure Robert had put in extensive research into every energy enhancing substance used in the world of endurance sports. Firm favorites were the cyclists with their gels and powders. We had driven over a few days earlier in Robert’s car with 5 kilos of assorted performance, non-freezable enhancers. We found the snow line around 2400m and after a gel or two set about the slow ascent on skis to the first hut, at 3187m. By law the huts/refuges leave access to Winter Rooms that are unattended and provide the very basic need of shelter, they are by their very remoteness not the cleanest of places with months of abandoned food and fuel containers, no water apart from what you make yourself and of course no heating, the

bedding is damp and dirty but the one plus is that it is cold enough not to support any bugs!Day 2 was a shorter height gain than day one, around 600m, it just happened to be seemingly mostly vertical. Our second hut was perched on top of the ridge we would be climbing, with the wall or rock becoming ever more perpendicular we were delighted to find a fixed rope in place for the last 100m. Night 2 was a little more comfortable as we were able to air the blankets in the afternoon sun before a cold fog came up the valley and engulfed us. Day 3 we left our shelter just after 3am for the preferred surrounding of the pure majesty about us. Skinning up the Dome du Goûter, 4300m, the sky began to lighten and by 5.30am the dawn broke guiding the few remaining peaks above us, before finally warming our frozen souls with the prospect of a perfect day. The Vallot hut and emergency refuge was passed at 4362m the skis came off and the crampons went back on. The air was beginning to disappear around us. The headwall or ‘bloody steep bit’ before we would see the summit again was mind over matter, your diaphragm is aching with the effort of supplying air with nothing in

it to muscles that are on the edge of fatigue, regiments of red blood cells are called into action to keep those legs moving, stop now and the engine just won’t restart.

Cresting the headwall exposed the last majestic sight, ‘a stairway to heaven’. An arête or crest leading up at 45 degrees to the sky with Italy on one side and France on the other just two boots wide no room for error. We were in the territory of ‘The Flying Guide Belay’, in the event that one of us made a fatigue induced error and tripped, the guide behind us would jump the other way, the rope would act like a cheese wire on the arête and both would be saved, then the situation could be resolved calmly. Suddenly without warning the waiting was over, we arrived on the summit and emotion took me by the throat. There was nowhere left to go all around us was down. The gracious lady had allowed us to stand upon her in the finest of weather, not a breath of wind, or air for that matter, anywhere. We stayed on the summit for around 25 minutes before setting about the 3000m ski down the glacier and all its hazards, and six hours later with all the gels used up, we walked onto solid ground.

At precisely 10.01am European time on 21st of May 2011 Robert Osborne and I stood on top of Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain at 4810m (15,782 feet) we had realised an ambition started some five years earlier.

Proposals for a major £50 million investment into Compton Park have been announced, which will see the education, sport and community benefits spread throughout Wolverhampton. This unique proposal would result in over 150 direct construction jobs being created, plus an additional 250 indirect jobs in the supply chain. The carefully co-ordinated plans have been prompted by the decision of the University of Wolverhampton to vacate its Compton Park Campus. This has led to a unique collaboration between some of the main partners on Compton Park: University of Wolverhampton, St Edmund’s Catholic School, the Archdiocese of Birmingham, and Wolverhampton Wanderers (‘Wolves’) Football Club, together with Redrow Homes. The proposals will result in:•St Edmund’s Catholic School

relocating onto the former University of Wolverhampton campus, in part-refurbished, part-new buildings delivering significantly enhanced facilities than their existing plans through Building Schools for the Future (BSF).

•Wolves building a new indoor pitch on the vacated St Edmund’s Catholic School site, improving existing pitches and creating an FA Premier League ‘Category 1’ Football Academy, complying with the new Academy accreditation system. Wolves’ aim is to create a world-class facility, giving talented local youngsters the best possible chance to progress, along with providing some community access.

•The University of Wolverhampton re-investing in a new multi-million pound proposed Science facility on its City Centre Campus.

•Wolves donating its £1 million Indoor Academy Arena at Aldersley Leisure Village to Wolves Community Trust, which will assist the independent charity in positively impacting thousands of young, disadvantaged and disabled people across Wolverhampton.

•55 new four-and five-bed executive homes to be built by Redrow Homes on the remainder of the University’s land, providing a large part of the enabling funding necessary to make the proposals happen.

Financing for the development is already in place and the proposals have been welcomed by the Wolverhampton Building Schools for the Future programme. Steve Morgan, Chairman of Wolves and speaking at a joint press conference at St Edmund’s Catholic School, “This unique proposal has huge benefits for the

City of Wolverhampton. It is almost unheard of to see so many parties from the public and private sector collaborating so well together for the benefit of all.

“These £50 million investment plans signal a truly great opportunity to kick-start one of the most significant proposals our City has seen for many years. It will provide compelling educational, community and economic benefits, not just for the users of Compton Park, but for thousands of people across Wolverhampton.

“The nature of the plans, with each development completely interdependent on the other, means that we have only one very limited window of opportunity to bring these proposals to fruition. However, we all remain confident and optimistic there is the joint will and impetus of the partners, along with the finance already in place, to make these plans a reality.”

City Boost with £50 Million Compton Park Investment

Wolves, on behalf of the partners, have created a micro-site www.molineuxpride.co.uk/comptonpark to keep interested parties updated on this exciting development.

MARRIAGE OR LIVING TOGETHER – A LEGAL AND FINANCIAL DIFFERENCE!

It’s a common misconception that unmarried couples living together can claim against each other when their relationship fails. The reality is that, save for some limited financial protection for children, living together, regardless of how long, gives you no right to make a financial claim. For example, a woman living with a wealthy man for 20 years and raising children with him cannot claim maintenance.

To have any right to property, you must either hold the property in joint names, prove you contributed to its acquisition, or failing that, the court may decide, through your partner’s words and actions, they intended for you to financially benefit from the property.

However, if a short marriage of one year fails, a young childless wife with no wealth but a wealthy husband may be granted property, a lump sum and maintenance depending upon her needs. The law protects married couples by allowing the court to adjust property ownership and order maintenance based on needs, regardless of your spouse’s wishes.

Whether it’s better financially to marry or live together depends upon your respective wealth!

LIVING TOGETHER AND PRE /POST NUPTIAL

AGREEMENTS

To achieve financial certainty, you can enter into an agreement to clarify how money and possessions are allocated if your relationship breaks down.

If you live together you might want a Living Together Agreement. It is binding, dictates what will happen with joint savings and debts, who

will retain furniture and the home or if the home will be sold and how the proceeds will be divided. However, it is no longer binding if you marry.

For those considering or already married, it’s worth noting that as a Pre / Post Nuptial Agreement is not currently binding in law, a court can agree a different financial outcome. But the existence of the Agreement, provided it is fair, entered into without duress and with advice, will be a factor the court takes into account in determining the division of assets. And they are becoming increasingly influential.

Pre / Post Nuptial Agreements are particularly useful in protecting inheritances or pre-marriage assets in second or third marriages. An agreement would probably have saved Paul McCartney substantial legal costs in his divorce with Heather Mills!

OTHER WEALTH PROTECTION MEASURES TO CONSIDER

• Wills – without one, a large proportion (if not all) of your assets will go automatically to your spouse, and partners living together are not automatically entitled to inherit.

• Discretionary Trusts- if you have wealth you would like to pass to future generations, and protect from divorce claims, make a Trust specifying only children and grandchildren and specifically excluding spouses.

• Protecting a family or other business - limit a court`s ability to transfer company shares to a spouse by tightening up the Memorandum and Articles of Association. Think carefully about the terms of employing a spouse in a family business - are you are giving employee rights and claims in relation to lost earnings?

• Tax - ensure any transfer or sale of property on divorce is dealt with as tax efficiently as possible. Get tax advice before formally separating and issuing divorce proceedings.

• Bank of Mum and Dad - If you give a lump sum to a child to help buy a house, first decide if you`re giving it as an irrecoverable gift or as a repayable loan. If it’s a loan, consider securing it against the property (like a mortgage) so if their relationship fails, the loan is repaid and the ex-partner doesn’t benefit financially.

• Property Ownership - should you own your property solely, or in joint names in equal or unequal shares? If jointly, you may want to hold them as “Tenants in Common”, so the shares are protected and on death will pass according to your will rather than automatically to the survivor. Remember, this doesn’t stop a court adjusting ownership depending upon need.

Relationship breakdowns tend to be emotionally fraught – by planning ahead you can make sure that protecting your wealth for yourself and your children is one less thing to worry about.

Keith Berry one of the founder Trustees and Secretary of the charity was nominated in the Birthday Honours list for his work with a charity to benefit from the Wolverhampton Marathon on 4th September.

Gelliwig, its residential Centre in Porthmadog , is a tribute to Graham Birch and John Thompson, teachers at Colton Hills School who died prematurely in 1980. The charity, registered in 1981, was formed to honour their contribution to the lives of young people at Colton Hills School in particular and Wolverhampton generally.

Gelliwig, can accommodate thirty people using a mixture of bunk beds and single divans. There are beds for wheelchair users and a hoist and shower chair as an integrated approach to all young people was the initial ethos.

The small, not for profit, local charity is managed by volunteer trustees and has a part-time paid warden living near to Gelliwig. The cost to user groups has always been kept to a minimum and is subsidised by fund-raising of which our annual

event with the Joe Loss Orchestra has been a successful example.

During the past 25 years thousands of young people have stayed at Gelliwig and experienced castles like Caernarvon, beaches like Black Rock Sands, wild-life like the Ospreys at Pont y Croesar and for some it has been the first sight of and paddle in the sea. A much smaller group have climbed Snowdon!

Keith says, “This honour of MBE is really a tribute to all the helpers of the charity and indeed to both Graham and John who took children on school journeys as part of their normal teaching.”

Further information for potential user groups or ways to sponsor the charity would be welcome, please contact : Keith Berry 01902 655962

Lealans - Unearthing The Past

Lealans Garden Centre began on its present site on the Bridgnorth Road at Shipley, just before the Second World War, when the present directors grandfather Frederick William Lealan bought the land the Garden Centre now stands on.They moved from The Green in Darlaston, where Frederick and his wife had a greengrocers shop and where he grew bedding plants and chrysanthemums. Frederick also had a haulage business in Darlaston. When they moved from Darlaston, his son James left his office job and started working with him and they were later joined by daughter Elizabeth.

They were only allowed to grow vegetables during the war years. But after the war ended Frederick and James built the original 1 acre of glasshouses themselves on the site and for many years grew tomatoes in them, before foreign imports made it difficult to make them pay. Later chrysanthemum blooms became one of the main crops until dwindling call for them meant that they were dropped to concentrate on the Garden Centre and the growing of ornamental

plants. For many years they stood on Wolverhampton’s outdoor market, selling tomatoes and flowers.

Elizabeth built up a large cacti collection in the fifties which she showed at various local shows winning many prizes. After giving

up the cacti in the sixties she became interested in orchids and built up a collection of these, the Cymbidium being one of her favourites.

The present directors are James’ son Peter and daughter Ann who both started working in the business straight from school. James’ widow Phyllis no longer takes an active role in the business but still takes a close interest in what is going on. Elizabeth passed away in April 2010.

The garden centre has been greatly improved over the last few years with the outdoor shrub area being completely rebuilt during the late 1990s. It now holds probably one of the best ranges of shrubs, climbing plants, conifers, roses and trees in the Midlands with

the emphasis on top quality at reasonable prices.

In 2004 the existing gateways were closed and a new purpose built entrance and driveway were opened, greatly improving the access.

The indoor pot plant area was given an overhaul during the early part of 2007, with a new concrete floor and wooden tables being put in. The displays on these tables constantly changes during the year. It holds a vast array of all sorts of houseplants from Primroses in January through to Poinsettias in December.

Hanging Baskets and Gift Bowls are just two of our specialties. The former being

available for hanging outside for the summer and the later always available, but especially for Mother’s Day and Christmas.

We still grow as much as we can – Geraniums, Hanging Basket plants and Cyclamen being three of our main crops.

The range of goods available for customers to purchase has been greatly increased over the last few years and now includes garden furniture, barbecues, giftware and Christmas goods, but of course the main focus is still on plants. We stock many unusual plants as well as the more common and if we don’t have something in stock we will try and get it for you.

We pride ourselves on our knowledge of plants and friendly helpful staff.

Keep your gardenblooming

Tubs and baskets need watering daily if the weather is dry, do it first thing in the morning or in the evening to avoid scorching leaves. Remember to liquid feed weekly. Even if you’re using compost which contains slow release fertilizer, they’ll still benefit from a bit of liquid feeding.

Once bedding plants in the garden become established, they should only need watering occasionally. There’s no need to water a lawn during dry weather – it’ll soon colour up again once we have some rain.

If you’re going away on holiday, it’s advisable to get someone to water your tubs and baskets for you. Indoor plants can be stood on capillary matting – the other end is put into a container full of water and the plants will take up the water as they need it. Tomatoes and cucumbers will need water regularly during hot weather – preferably in the morning – this keeps the atmosphere humid.

Watch out for signs of leatherjackets on lawns, they cause irregular brown patches and loose

areas of turf on the lawn. Grubs are dark grey, brown and legless. These can appear from mid-August to the end of September. If you do spot their damage spray the lawn with Provado Lawn Grub Killer.

Once we get into August it’s time to start trimming hedges. Use secateurs on large leave plants such as Laurels to save mutilating foliage.

It seems only 5 minutes since the spring bulbs were in flower, but they’ll be appearing in Garden Centre’s from the end of August!

By Ann Winwood

There’s still time to fill in any gaps in the garden with some instant colour. You can buy established plants of geraniums, cosmos, New Guinea impatiens and other flowering plants throughout the summer months. Dead head your baskets, tubs and herbaceous borders regularly to keep plants producing new flowers all summer.

Wide selection of herbaceous plants and shrubs available Houseplants – flowering and

green always in stock!

PowerPostureCorrect posture is essential for golf performance & injury prevention but is often overlooked.Due to modern day society & the lifestyles we lead, simply getting into good golf posture isn’t that easy & increasingly we see more people addressing the golf ball with a ‘C Posture’.

This is an excessive rounding of the upper back & limits your shoulder turn leading to loss of power & efficiency.

You should address the golf ball with your spine in a neutral position by bending from your hips not from your upper back.

Simply hold a golf club against your tail bone & middle of your back.Keeping these points in contact with the club - bend forward from your hips & gently flex your legs to position the weight in the middle of your feet. This will give you the correct feeling of addressing the ball with a neutral spine, enabling you to create a better shoulder turn for more power & consistency.

Patshull Park held a hugely successful charity golf event on the longest day of the year – June 21st

The inaugural PPH Mid Summer Golf Classic, a pairs competition, supporting local charity Compton Hospice was attended by over 180 golfers on the day and raised a total of £1,500.A large part of this fundraising total was due to the huge efforts of a local junior golfer from Sedgley. Ben O’Connor raised £450 for the charity by gaining sponsorship for playing in the event... Fantastic effort Ben.

Prizes at the event included the latest range of Titleist drivers, Titleist bags and Footjoy shoes.

As the last group didn’t come in until 8.30pm and with the first group having gone out at 8am, the top 5 pairs, nearest the pin and longest drive winners were announced online on Patshull’s new website at midnight!! www.patshull-park.co.uk

Patshull Park’s John Prior was delighted, “We are really pleased with the support for the event from competitors, suppliers and our team of people here at Patshull Park. An excellent day of competition whilst raising money for a very deserving charity.”

Compton’s Community Fundraiser Sally Woods remarked “I would like to thank all the team at Patshull Park for working so hard to produce such a successful event, we are always most grateful for such donations and will continue to work with local partners such as Patshull Park to achieve our goals.” www.compton-hospice.org.uk

John advised further of the next charity golf event to be held in the autumn of this year “We are looking to support charity again with a PPH Pairs Challenge event in September with similar prizes and theme to the day – all are welcome”.

Further details of this forthcoming golf event and all other events can be found on Patshull’s website and on the opposite page (57).

The golf course, originally designed by Sir Henry Cotton in 1964 has been remodelled by world renowned golf architects Hawtree Ltd.

The company came highly recommended especially as they were commissioned to design the new Donald Trump golf course in Scotland.

Superbly manicured and with first class bunkering detail the remodelled 3 Hammers course offers a great challenge. Whether you are a junior, beginner or scratch player you’ll love the new course as it feels like you’re playing one of the best golf courses in the country only with the first 300 yards missing off each hole.

What was already a great course has now been transformed into a mini Augusta and is an absolute delight to play providing the

opportunity for players to improve their pitching, chipping and putting skills.

Enjoying all the challenges of a full scale course including water hazards, 29 beautifully sculpted bunkers and located in a mature setting — the 3 Hammers short course offers golfers of all abilities a very enjoyable experience.

The new course has been cleverly designed as a good test of one’s short game but also for game improvement. The 3 Hammers short course is not your average par 3. It’s pretty, beautifully manicured and has a feeling of maturity about it and it quickly shows its teeth in the first few holes. The newly opened par 3 layout is the golf course equivalent of a lightweight boxer, just because it’s short — it doesn’t mean it won’t put you flat on your back!

The 3 Hammers prides itself on being a pay and play facility that is open to all. That said, season tickets are available and are reasonably priced at just £90 for 3 months unlimited play for adults with discounts for juniors and seniors. With a wide range of learn to play golf classes starting at just £20 for a 4 week course led by a team of 3 full time PGA Golf Professionals, the 3 Hammers has it all.

The newly designed course is complimented by a wide range of practice and teaching facilities including an automated, undercover driving range, indoor putting green and indoor Golf Performance Studio housing the latest 3D video technology.

3 Hammers Golf Complex

Following a £100,000 remodelling of its par 3 short course, the 3 Hammers Golf Complex prides itself on being one of the finest 18 hole par 3 courses in the UK.

Mark Allen, grandson of Charles Cooper who founded Perton Park Golf Club in 1990, took over the role of Club Manager 2 years ago and has been instrumental in managing a series of changes and improvements to the course.

Over the last 6 months Mark has been focusing on improving key areas of Perton Park Golf Course including; extending fairways, improving drainage and adding new bunkers.

As part of the course improvements, a series of mature trees were moved from their existing site onto the fairways, instead of cutting the trees down and planting new ones. Particular care was taken to preserve them and they have been carefully replanted in different areas of the course. Using the largest tree moving machine in the UK, over 25 mature trees have been moved. The process took over 3 days to complete and the largest tree that was moved was over 40ft in height.

“Preserving the established trees was challenging, however it was particularly important for me as most of them were planted when my Grandfather first opened the course. Moving them to their new locations will allow them to continue growing whilst adding features to the course.“ explained Mark.

There are currently more improvements being made to Perton Park. One of the most significant is the renovation of the Club House and Pro Shop.

The renovation work has been taking place over the last few months at a cost of over £180,000. This project will include new changing facilities, extended Pro Shop, members bar and also a conference and function room.

Local building contractors TBC Ltd of Wolverhampton, undertook the complete refurbishment of the Club House, which features a fantastic set-up where golfers can enjoy a meal and a drink after they have played, overlooking the course.

Perton Park is also now a beautiful, contemporary wedding and conference venue which looks out onto manicured gardens.

"We can cater for around 150 people and we have an award winning Chef." added Mark.

Perton Park’s sister club Swindon Golf Club has also had refurbishments made to the changing rooms. Members and visitors have been starting to notice the improvements to both clubs, as in the last three months around 100 new members have joined Perton Park and Swindon Golf Club.

“It is great to see so many new members joining Perton Park and Swindon as we are working extremely hard to ensure all our members have great facilities to enjoy at great value.” Mark added.

For more information on using the facilities at Perton Park please call 01902 380073 or visit www.pertongolfclub.co.uk

As any dedicated golfer will tell you, a well maintained course and excellent greens are essential to the success of any golf club.

Well for nearly forty years the 9 hole, (18 Tee) course based on the outskirts of Wolverhampton is best described as Staffordshire’s true hidden gem.Founded in 1972, the private members club plays over ground which surrounds the National Grid Bushbury Sub Station, is par 58, consisting of two par fours and seven par threes. It may sound small, but that doesn’t mean to say that the course is easy, and those who consider it a walkover do so at their peril. A good card can be ruined when, as members put it: “Bushbury bites back!”

Greenfield Golf Club is a private members club in name only, a warm welcome is guaranteed to any who join the ranks, affiliated to the Staffordshire Golf Union and the English Golf Union, the club provides its members with official handicaps and competitions are played each week. Greenfield also has thriving ladies, junior and seniors section, with its own clubhouse along with snooker room; they truly cater for everyone’s golfing needs. Added to this, last year the club formed a partnership with the Golf Academy run by PGA

Professional Craig Thomas and his team. Greenfield Golf Club is used as one of the Academy’s three training facilities and lessons are always available for members of the club.

In these days of financial restraint, Greenfield Golf Club has endeavoured to keep its membership cost realistic. Membership of the club is £260 per year that works out at the equivalent of £5.00 per week for unlimited golf. For more information about joining Greenfield Golf Club please contact membership secretary Robert Taylor on 0121 5573135 or email [email protected]

You’re always assured a warm welcome at Greenfield Golf Club – the true hidden gem of Staffordshire golf.

Since their move to the Old Mill Antique Centre site the customers have never had it so good, firstly there are plenty of car parking spaces, so parking is not a problem and secondly there is an excellent Tea Room where you can enjoy good food while bidding at the

auction or have afternoon tea after you have been to view. To make it easy for their customers, they open all weekend prior to the auction for viewing and if you wish you can leave bids with the auctioneer if you cannot attend the auction. To make it even easier before you leave home you can view the catalogue on the internet, with plenty of very good photos and it also gives you an estimate of what the auctioneer thinks it will sell for. In the Auction Room everything is set out in lot number order so everything is easy to find---it could not be easier. It is just as easy if you want to sell at auction. There are auction valuation days every Wednesday from 10.00am where you can bring items to the auction rooms and you will be advised what the items would sell for and if you are happy you can enter the items in the next auction. If you have large items Perry and Phillips have there own collection service

who are used to handling valuable items, so can be assured that your possessions will arrive at the auction room safely.

The auctions are usually held the first Tuesday of every month and items for the auction have be entered at least eight days before the auction date so that the catalogue can be prepared and entered on the internet site.

The next auction is September 6th and the auctions start at 10.30 am... so pay them a visit and enjoy an auction experience.

Modern Friendly Auction RoomPerry and Phillips have been holding auctions in Bridgnorth for over 175 years and have built an excellent reputation based upon service, quality and professionalism.

Discovering fine dining experiences is one of the delights of good living. Locating that special venue often requires a tip or two from those 'in the know' - and those in the know will have no hesitation in recommending The 3 Hammers Bar and Bistro.

This welcoming Bistro is a 'standalone' business that sits amid a modern golf complex on the Old Stafford Road at Coven, just outside Wolverhampton. And you don't have to be a fan of golf or a

member of the club in order to take full advantage of this fairway to dine. Most definitely there are more than three good reasons why those keen diners amongst our readers should seriously consider a visit. And you don't have to knock three times before you gain admission either but to avoid any disappointment it is best to book in advance as this is a thriving popular venue. You'll surely find - as we did - a friendly welcome from staff, as you settle with a pre-dinner drink, in the comfortable bar area where the buzz of lively conversation promotes a cheery and informal atmosphere. Totally devoid of pretentiousness so typical of many establishments

today, this is a bistro where you can truly relax.

Your correspondent, an impatient fellow by nature, was pleased to be shown to a table within a few minutes. It's reassuring to be able to report that before I could utter 'Bob's your uncle', restaurant manager Denise had settled us in the comfortable surroundings of a most pleasant dining area with well-spaced tables and a delightful overall ambience. And indeed, with room enough to hold that special party or celebration.

We awaited eagerly to start on a gourmet experience that would live long in memory. As is so often the case, the best dining experiences are imbued with a subtle sense of novelty. The 3 Hammers

certainly has this with its winning combination of character, comfort and cuisine. You won't be disappointed with the tantalising menu that offers that perfect balance of 'traditional' with 'interesting'. From homemade steak and kidney pie to chicken fajitas through to a vegetarian selection, means there's something for everyone, with main course prices ranging from £9.20 to £16.95. Owners Terry and Carol have been at the 3 Hammers for over 22 years and are so determined that you enjoy your experience to the full that should you like something from the menu tailored a little more to your taste, they invite you to ask and they'll do their best to oblige. (try doing that at the local 'microwave' pub chain restaurant and see what you get). Choices were hard to make from the extensive menu. Your world weary correspondent and his assistant were suddenly enthused by tasty starters: Camembert and Brie deep fried and served with redcurrant jelly and Garlic and Ginger Prawns served with sweet chilli and garlic mayonnaise dips.Once we'd decided on a main course - Cajun Chicken Melt for this writer and a giant Rib-Eye Steak served on a sizzling skillet for my assistant - it wasn't long before all gastronomic expectations were met in a most mouth-watering way.My dining companion, the very shrewd Jasmine Harper (Financial Columnist for The Morning Star) commented,"I think, perceptively, that quite often one dines best where one immediately senses the enthusiasm - and here this amounts to a passion - for the food, considerate

attention to customer needs and a desire to encourage hedonistic pleasures. This latter quality is something we very much need these days"

"Yes" I replied. "The food is so good that it certainly strikes a hammer blow for the cause - though I must say, with food as delicious as this, that I shan't be limiting myself to just three courses."

"Naughty boy!" Admonished Jasmine.

"What about your waistline?"

"Don't worry." I responded. "I don't intend to waste a mouthful!"

When the bill arrived, I didn't need to depend on Jasmine's financial acumen to see that it was very good value indeed: particularly so because servings were ample in size - unlike some Bistros I could name where only 'bite size' portions are served.

I have to confess to a personal ignorance of golf and the only driving range with which I'm familiar is of the 'Rover' kind. But even a golf ignoramus such as me knows 'what's what' when it's served up on a platter.

Rival bistros had better watch - because they're really into the swing of it at 3 Hammers Bistro.

The 3 Hammers Bar and Bistro can seat up to 120 people in their recently refurbished restaurant. It is an ideal venue for Private Parties, Family Celebrations and Funerals.

Sharon Harris, a 48 year old account manager from Wolverhampton had struggled with her weight for most of her life. After visiting her local Nuffield Health Hospital, Sharon has changed her weight and her life around…

As an only, child Sharon learnt to find comfort in eating crisps when she was upset and the habit extended into adulthood. By the time she had reached her thirties, she was emotionally eating her problems away and reached a point where her weight was affecting her life.

10 years ago Sharon made some changes to her, diet adopting a programme of healthy eating and exercise and successfully lost a significant amount of weight. Sadly her mother passed away and Sharon turned to comfort food again and unfortunately put weight back on.

Around this time Sharon’s weight started to affect other areas of her health. Sharon developed severe osteoarthritis in her knees and walking short distances became a problem. Knee X-ray’s showed that she had gaps in her knee cartilage, resulting in bone-on-bone rubbing. Unable to walk without assistance, Sharon’s father lent her his walking stick.

Sharon describes this point of her life as: “just existing… I was in pain; I couldn’t sleep without waking up every hour and was constantly sick with a cold – sometimes lasting up to six months. My life was out of control and I was struggling to get from one day to the next.”

Sick of the struggle her daily life had become, Sharon decided to make some changes to her life, and used money from her father’s will to undertake gastric bypass surgery. She met with Consultant, Mr Khan at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital.

Sharon’s pre-op weight was 21 stone 5lbs, with a BMI of 48.9. Being morbidly obese Sharon was at great risk of developing life threatening diseases such as diabetes or having a heart attack from her high blood pressure. She was put on a strict pre-surgery liver shrinking diet that meant that low-fat, low-carbohydrate diet and decided to eat the way she would have to eat after her operation. Sharon thought changing her diet was going to be tough, but found it surprisingly easy and lost 1 stone 2lbs before the operation. Following her surgery the results Sharon has seen have been dramatic. “The impact this surgery has had on my life is amazing. My health is better, I can walk again and the pain in my knees is down 75%. I am now off all my blood pressure medication, have no more wheezing and can actually sleep during the

night!”

Having more energy has meant Sharon has embraced exercise again and she has continued to eat healthily. Seeing the changes in her body has helped Sharon keep to her new regime. “I made a life changing decision when I decided to have the gastric bypass. I chose to invest my father’s money in my health and I have seen a huge return on my investment.” This was the best money that I have ever spent and worth every last penny.

Sharon has slimmed from a size 28-30 to 14-16 and now weighs 12 stone 3lbs and is still losing weight! Sharon says her father would have been so proud of what she has achieved. “I now feel like the person I was meant to be and can start doing the things I longed to do”.

Fantastic hair salons are hard to find, but thanks to award-winning celebrity hairdresser, Lisa Shepherd, luxury, style and superb staff are brought together under one roof in the heart of Staffordshire. Wombourne village is the ideal location for the new Lisa Shepherd boutique hair salon. The exceptionally well equipped and thoroughly modern premises features coffee machines, cool but comfortable ‘pod’ chairs, gadgets and trendy lighting, making it the perfect setting for a day of pampering.

Working in partnership with Salon Director Joanne Hayes, the star colourist from Channel 4’s hit TV show ‘Ten Years Younger’ has succeeded in bringing the metropolitan salon out of town and into the suburbs.

As a highly regarded and award winning colourist, who has also become known as ‘the hair doctor’, Lisa Shepherd has achieved great success in her trade. Receiving numerous accolades that range from ‘British Hairdresser of the Year’ to ‘British Colourist of the Year’ and ‘Salon Design of the Year’ - Lisa has always managed to keep one step ahead of the competition.

It is this shared value that is of paramount importance to Salon Director, Joanne.

Having managed the flagship Lisa Shepherd salon in Kidderminster and boasting over 20 years’ experience in the trade - plus a reputation for being one of the top wedding hair specialists in the UK - Joanne is more than ready to take on the challenge ahead.

“I’m so excited to be back in Wombourne with such a beautiful boutique salon. My parents still live here and ran a cake shop in the High Street for over thirty years, so it really is returning to my roots,” says Joanne.

Passionate about her clients, Joanne strives to make each one feel amazing. With her enthusiasm and knowledge, every hair style, colour and cut is professionally executed and results in beautiful bespoke hair for all customers.

“I always encourage our clients to move their look on. It’s not about a slavish following of trends but a personal nod to the season that makes every client look their best.” says Joanne.

Ten talented and skilled members of staff make up the able team, who work tirelessly to ensure that everyone enjoys their time in the salon.

With facilities that make any visit exciting, the new salon boasts a luxurious lounge area that is stocked with magazines, countless drinks and snacks, a plasma screen TV and even an IMAC - in short, everything to keep you fully entertained throughout the experience.

Furthermore, a ‘ceremony room’ has been specially designed to provide customers with a separate space from the salon in which they can relax. Calming scents, music and subdued lighting, create the perfect haven from a stress-filled world.

It was every girl’s perfect weekend: shopping, pampering and soaking up glorious summer sunshine in a convertible sports car.Courtesy of Benham Wolverhampton, I was treated to the delights of the fantastic new BMW Z4: an exquisite and beautifully styled car that effortlessly exudes quality and sophistication.

The trade mark imposing front end makes it easily recognisable and the distinctive styling makes it everything a sports car should be - head-turning, captivating and exciting.

The sDrive 2.3i roadster was gleaming in Alpine White, with a Coral Red leather interior that rivaled the quality of any designer handbag.

From the moment I saw it I knew that returning to my mundane car was going to be hard, so I decided to enjoy every second.

Taking hold of the keys to such a stunning convertible was a big responsibility. It was obvious that it was going to draw attention, so it was time for a wash and blow dry. If you own a car like this, then fabulous hair is a must.

Making my way in to Codsall village, the Z4 stood out in the busy Saturday morning traffic - in fact, even a traffic jam was thoroughly enjoyable in this car. I was quite happy to sit and familiarise myself with the on-board multi-media system and enjoy the envious stares from passers-by.

Arriving at Urban Hair and Beauty, I panicked momentarily- how was I going to park!? A common concern for many women drivers. The 19inch V-spoke style alloy wheels were pristine and it would be a crime to 'curb' them. Of course, my fears were allayed when the parking sensors self-activated and reassured me of my position.

Opting for summer boho curls, Karen expertly styled my hair using their professional range of Matrix products, assuring me that the new ‘Amplify’ 24 hour hold hairspray would do its job - so I could thoroughly enjoy the wind in my hair.

The Z4 thrilled on straight roads, with effortless acceleration; achieving 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 151mph.

It was hard to stop driving but the shops beckoned.

Stopping off in the pretty village of Tettenhall, I paid a visit to the super chic ladies fashion boutique, Grace and Glory. Finding the perfect dress for a Saturday night spent partying proved easy, leaving more time to return to the hub of the city and visit Wolverhampton’s premier jewellers.

An excellent customer experience is always guaranteed at Henn’s and my visit was no exception. It’s a jewellers of distinction with a history stretching back to 1847 - and that’s why it’s so special.

Overwhelmed by the sparkling selection of stones in elegant settings, I was spoilt for choice. But being a firm follower of fashion I just had to get my hands on some uber trendy Pandora charms.

Warmly welcomed by Manager Carl Williams, I was given all the advice and help I needed in choosing a great selection of cute character charms along with extra special Murano glass versions, that when combined create a fantastic bespoke bracelet.

With the weekend coming to a close and feeling a little like Cinderella awaiting an imminent ‘pumpkin moment’, I reluctantly handed back the keys of the £30,000 Z4 and returned to reality.

A little out of my price range, I thought, but then again, with Benham’s excellent rates of finance, owning one might not just be a dream after all.

Ask The Podiatrist: Tom's Top Tip of the Month

Hallux Rigidus (Stiff big toe)Hallux rigidus can be characterized as arthritis of the main joint of the big toe. It is a wearing out of the joint surfaces.Early signs and symptoms include:• Pain and stiffness in the big toe during

use (walking, standing, bending, etc.) • Pain and stiffness aggravated by cold,

damp weather • Difficulty with certain

activities (running, squatting)

• Swelling and inflammation around the joint

As the disorder gets more serious, additional symptoms may develop, including:• Pain, even during rest • Difficulty wearing shoes because bone

spurs (overgrowths) develop. Wearing high-heeled shoes can be particularly difficult.

• Dull pain in the hip, knee, or lower back due to changes in the way you walk

• Limping, in severe cases

• Cause of Hallux RigidusIn the majority of cases the cause is unknown, the reason for this may be due to wear and tear of the joint which is particularly subject to pressure out due to tremendous stress placed on it during walking. With each step, a force equal to twice your body weight passes through this very small joint.

Contributing conditions such as gout or infection of the toe can lead to this condition. .

An underlying biomechanical condition can also cause this condition. For example, those with fallen arches or

excessive pronation (rolling in) of the ankles are susceptible to developing hallux rigidus.

In detail, excessive pronation may destabilize the great toe joint. If the foot pronates (or flattens) excessively, there is an increase in pressure under the first metatarsal as the foot rolls in. This force may be considered as an upward pressure from the floor on the

inside of the weight-bearing portion of the foot. This pressure beneath the first metatarsal can cause it to elevate, resulting in hypermobility, hallux limitus or hallux rigidus. Chiropodist/Podiatrists can assess and issue orthotics/insoles which can often provide relief.

TreatmentAs a form of degenerative arthritis, treatment begins with anti-inflammatory medication. Other conservative treatments include:• Shoes with a larger toe box • Offloading orthotics/insoles• Rest and ice • Avoid high heels • Watch your weight• Steroid injectionFinally, if no conservative measures help, then corrective surgery will be required to alleviate the painful condition.

The Beacon Walk of the Black Country has raised £103,000 for charity, after 3,500 walkers walked ten miles from Himley Hall to the Wolverhampton Racecourse.Thousands of listeners turned out at Himley to start the Walk and were joined by celebrities Beverley Knight, Suzi Perry, Don Goodman and Steve Bull. The parade of walkers completed their 10 mile challenge at the Racecourse and

were presented with a medal.

The majority of the money will be going to Promise Dreams, a children's charity dedicated to fulfilling the dreams of seriously ill and terminally ill children and their families. Ten percent of the funds will also be going to the Dudley and Wolverhampton Mayoral charities.

Matt Ramsbottom, managing director at Beacon added, ‘It was such an amazing day- we were thrilled with the turnout and how well it went. All the walkers did so well- they were all in good spirits

and had made such an effort with their fancy dress. A special mention also needs to go out to the marshals and sponsors without whom we couldn't have pulled off such a fantastic event!’

Beverley Bird from Promise Dreams said, 'We are so grateful to everyone who turned up with such pride and commitment to making this event such a success. With this money, we will be able to double the amount of dreams we fulfil - whether the child would like a holiday, a toy, medical treatment or equipment, or even the chance to meet their favourite celebrity, Promise Dreams is dedicated and committed to help.’

The Beacon Walk of the Black Country was supported by the University of Wolverhampton as well as Banks’s and Dudley Motors who also sponsored the event.

Beacon raise £103,000 in a day!

Hello, My name is Freya and I am 6 years old – I was born with Hereditary Pancreatitis, extra hepatic portal vein thrombosis and associated illnesses, none of which are curable.

This means that I have to take pain killers every day as it hurts and sometimes I have to go into hospital when it hurts too much. I cannot eat normally and have to be fed through a tube into my tummy.

My dream was to have a playhouse in my garden as I love to play outside and I needed somewhere safe to play with my friends.

My Mummy asked Promise Dreams if they could help me to get my playhouse – and they said YES!

I now play in my playhouse all the time and it’s lovely!

I want to thank you – its people like you who came and walked the Walk of the Black Country (I walked the last mile with my mom and dad and friends!) that make dreams come true for people like me – I’m one of the lucky ones – they have lots of children like me waiting for their dreams to come true.

Thank you

Freya Felton (Age 6)

In a world of incessant change, where yesterday’s answers no longer fit today’s problems, knowledge is doubling every five years, industries appear and disappear overnight, the rule book is rewritten weekly and new technology is introduced daily, it is essential that young people are well prepared for the future. The core purpose of education must be the development of well-qualified and well-rounded individuals who are self–assured, well-motivated and who have the personal and social skills to succeed at school and in later life. But there is another vitally important factor for schools to consider – happiness.Following a recent presentation about Tettenhall College I was approached by a pupil currently in Year 11 at another school. He seemed quite nervous but was determined to make what was a very important point for him. He wanted to thank me for making him realise something so obvious and important, but that had been missing from his own school life so far. It was the final slide in my presentation, showing a picture of a group of smiling Sixth Form students with the caption ‘Happy and Successful’ above it, that had struck a particular chord with him. He attended a selective school and was by any measure extremely successful in his academic achievements, but he had not really thought about how meaningless success is without being happy. I look forward to welcoming him to our school in September when he joins the Lower Sixth to start his A levels.

So what makes pupils happy and successful?

•Loyal,hardworking,wellqualifiedanddedicatedstaff

•Parentswhocarepassionatelyabouttheir children’s education

•Asupportivecommunityofgovernors, parents, pupils, past pupils, staff and members of the local community

•Superbfacilities,groundsandopportunities

•Andlast,butnotleast,thetalented,industriousandcaring pupils themselves

These all combine to create a school that enables every one of its pupils to develop and achieve. Pupils leave Tettenhall College with a thorough understanding of the importance of balance in life. They do not need to be lectured on the idea of ‘work hard and play hard’ because this is their everyday experience.

Making the decision on where to send sons and daughters to school is far from easy. I urge caution when looking at performance tables for schools because of the problem of trying to interpret results in a fair way across very different types of schools with different intakes, different subjects and different entry policies, not to mention the very nature of statistical analysis. My advice is to visit a school and spend as long as possible looking around and talking to staff and students; ask the head to show you and explain the ‘value added data’ for the school, because this attempts to measure the progress of pupils and not just the final outcome, and last but not least, ponder the question ‘are the pupils at the school happy and successful?’

Tettenhall College is an Independent Co-educational School for pupils aged 2 to 18.

One such adventure for 15 students is a trip to Uganda, where the Stourbridge School has had a link with St John’s School, Nandere since 2002. Accommodation will be provided at the local Seminary in Nandere and students will have the opportunity to join local pupils for lessons and get to know the pupils who are sponsored by Old Swinford Hospital. English Teacher Rhiannon Platt co-ordinates the sponsorship and there are currently 50 Ugandan pupils being helped with their education through funds donated by parents of current and former students.

Over £1,500 has been raised by students and staff throughout the

academic year and will used by Old Swinford Hospital students to help carry out some much needed refurbishment projects at St John’s. Similar projects in the past have included repainting classrooms and the accommodation block.

Organiser of the trip, Mr Carl Bingham said “It is such a valuable experience for both our Old Swinford Hospital students and pupils at St John’s. We are looking forward to meeting the sponsored pupils and learning about the reality of how people live in Uganda. St John’s has a great interest in learning about western culture and in particular Britain.”

No trip to Uganda would be complete without exploring the spectacular countryside and Old Swinford students will take in a three day safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, trek across the equator and go white water rafting.

Every year gifts are taken out to Uganda and this year the charity ‘Teddies for Tragedies’ has donated suitcases full of teddies, glove puppets, jumpers and blankets which will be distributed by Old Swinford Hospital students to the St John’s pupils and local orphanages.

Old Swinford Students off on an Adventure!

At the end of the summer term, after all the hard work of examinations, students at Old Swinford Hospital take part in Adventure Week. This is a broadening educational experience, intended to develop the spirit of adventure amongst students, giving them an opportunity to exercise their powers of leadership in the face of various challenges.

FIND OUT HOW

Wolverhampton Grammar School has been inspiring

students for almost 500 years

Choosing where your child goes to school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. What should take precedence - academic success, the level of pastoral care, the range of extra-curricular opportunities on offer?

Finding this balance is the dilemma faced by many parents, but, according to Vincent Darby, head of Wolverhampton Grammar School, knowing that your child is happy, that they are busy in pursuing a range of activities and that they are successful – not only in reaching but in exceeding their potential, is what every parent would want for their child.

“At Wolverhampton Grammar School we work hard to strike our own balance between striving for academic success and ensuring our students are happy, enquiring young people who have a range of stimulating, challenging opportunities available to them,” explains Mr Darby.

This is an exciting time for WGS, as its new junior provision prepares for its first intake of students in September 2011. The head of Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School (WGJS), Andrew Hymer, is busy with his staff planning a stimulating timetable which will enable students to benefit from a programme of activities that will be available from 8.00am – 5.30pm

should parents require the flexibility of a whole day schedule.

“We seek to provide all children with opportunities to lead others and to show initiative," comments Andrew Hymer. "A busy child is a happy child and WGJS will challenge and support each child to make the most of their potential and to make learning fun,” he continues.

Next year will be a remarkable one for WGS as it will mark the 500th anniversary of the founding of the school: "The reason why we offer the right choice for so many young people is not only that we are blessed with excellent staff, superb facilities and outstanding results, but we have a heritage of five centuries of excellence that underpins everything we do.” concludes Vincent Darby

An inspirational start for children as young as two is provided at the Children’s Day Nursery in Tettenhall College. Open throughout the year, our highly qualified and experienced staff provide ‘edu-care’ - both education and care in a warm, family atmosphere. The Nursery is open Monday to Friday from 8.00a.m. to 6.00p.m. A Breakfast Club operates from 7.30a.m. providing further childcare for those parents who need to make an early start. The Nursery provides hot lunches every day, freshly prepared and cooked by our in-house catering company.

Children experience different types of learning through a variety of stimulating activities and the excellent resources which are available. Interactive play within a wealth of indoor and outdoor facilities provides the perfect platform for every child’s development.

The Day Nursery has its own suite of rooms which was designed as part of a modern purpose-built facility. There is a spacious play room, a quiet room for sleeping or learning in small groups, a messy play area for sand, water, clay, dough, paint and glue; and a bathroom with a baby changing area. There is also a securely walled and fenced, outdoor rubber-crumb play area which enables children to play safely outside. The 33 acres of beautiful grounds provide additional opportunities for closely supervised exploration, along with a woodland environment and the frequently visited ‘Pets Corner’.

Parents are offered great flexibility in being able to choose the number of sessions that suit their particular circumstances, whole days, morning or afternoon sessions. Parents are also offered Nursery funding.

Bilbrook Karate& Kickboxing ClubSince kick-starting a new wave of local interest in martial arts in 1997, Bilbrook Karate & Kickboxing Club punches well above its weight. It has produced 20 blackbelts in its short lifetime and is now looking to make you the next.

Formerly part of the English Contact Karate Association and presently part of the British Modern Karate Association, the school - run by 30 year experienced martial arts veteran sensei Paul Millington - offers students expert tuition in an eye-catching fighting style.

Paul explains: “Our style is developed from a combination of kickboxing and Thaiboxing techniques; we also incorporate throws and locks which are excellent for self defence, fitness, flexibility and confidence.”

“We have had a lot of success in competitions and produced winners at club and national level.”

And age is no barrier to joining either, says Paul: “Our youngest blackbelt was 11, our oldest was 47 and we have one lady who will imminently be our oldest blackbelt ever.”

But it’s not all about awards and accolades, there’s a heavily promoted emphasis on discipline and respect. It’s here where Paul really has the competition flawed.

“Our aim and that the BMKA is to promote physical and mental well being. To develop in students an awareness of the needs of others, offer a sense of achievement and a feeling of belonging.”

All of this takes place in a safe and friendly club environment that has a thriving social element too.

“We look after our new members and they can train and learn in complete

safety. Lots of friendships have been made there. If I had my time over I would have started the club sooner - I’ve met so many nice people.”

“We also have an association gala once a year which has been a great success. All the other clubs and instructors, mums and dads get together for a meal, live music and dancing, as well as award presentations.”

Sunday 22nd May dawned dry but very windy and was the 11th running of the Wolverhampton Rotary Club Dragon Boat event on the lake at Himley Hall. The weather for this event is always important but the effect of the wind was to be made apparent later in the day.On the previous day a team of Rotarians had prepared the site. This entailed erecting a marquee, dustbins put out, the boat loading area staked and roped, scaffolding erected and the pitches marked out.

There was a record entry of 29 boats and a good number of fairground and sideshow attractions. All was going well, cars were pouring into the car park and the heats were underway when a mini tornado struck and lifted the marquee 25 feet into the air. It came down across the roofs of several cars and ended up as a pile of torn canvas and broken poles. Sadly one of the damaged cars belonged to Rod Jones, who as Chairman of the Dragon Boats

Committee had done a sterling job of organising the event and in particular of securing so many entries.

The racing was of a high standard, made somewhat more difficult for the crews by the choppy water and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. The support from the public was excellent which also meant that the fairground attractions and the food stalls did good business.

The racing finished late in the day and the winners were Chris Jewkes Fitness followed by the defending champions Joners Ark. This year there were several schools taking part and Rod Jones had presented a trophy for the school recording the fastest time which was won by Tettenhall College.

All in all a very good day and our thanks go to everyone who participated. It is too soon to know how much has been raised. The sponsorship money raised by each boat is shared between the charity they wish to support and Rotary Charities and it is likely that the overall amount will be in the region of £15,000 - £20,000 which is a splendid result.

There was another splendid result that afternoon for which Rotary can claim no credit, although it was watched with mounting apprehension by a number of our members who deserted the Dragon Boats in the early afternoon, and that was of course the Wolves ensuring their survival in the Premier League!

The Rotary year ends at the end of June when new officers are appointed. Our new President, the 89th President of the club, is Richard Green. Born in Portsmouth in 1940 he enjoyed

a successful career in the construction industry working in many parts of the world and arrived in Wolverhampton in the early 70’s working for Tarmac and then Mowlem. Richard has a large family with children, grand children and great grandchildren although sadly he lost his wife three years ago. His principal interests are his family in the UK and Canada, Rotary and Amateur Theatre. He and his late wife started the Goldthorn Theatre Company 15 years ago and this has been a great success.

In Rotary Richard has served on several committees, has taken a Group Study Exchange Team to Malaysia and was part of a team to visit Indian slums to help the elimination of polio. He is now the District Foundation Chairman with responsibility for international service projects.

He will ensure that we live up to the Rotary motto of Service Above Self.

Anyone wishing to know more about our club can contact our Secretary Geoff Lowndes on 01902 758990.

“All my fears just melted away” - PatientMany of our friends have asked us what gifts they can get us for our special occasion, instead of presents we would like for our friends and family to make a donation to Compton Hospice and help them to continue their work with life limited patients.

A Gift List with a Difference – What your money could do• £20.00 will pay for a bereaved child to have a fun day out with a counsellor and other children, encouraging them to have fun and laugh again

• £25.00 will provide a relaxing Complementary Therapy session for a patient

• £50.00 will pay for a Lymphoedema patient to have a massage session, reducing pain caused by swollen limbs

• £80.00 will buy a pager for our ward nurses to wear so they are always contactable by patients

• £128.00 will pay for a Homecare Nurse to visit a patient in their own homes

• £155.00 will pay for a patient to visit our Day Unit

• £173.00 will pay for a night sitter nurse to stay overnight in a patients home to support the family

• £663.00 covers the cost of a 24 hour stay in our In-patient Unit

Whatever your celebration, visitwww.celebratewithcompton.co.ukMake your special day a special day for our patients too.

You can also order special celebration favours as a unique way of thanking your guests for sharing your day with you.

Page 109: Wolverhampton West Aug/Sept

109

Compton Hospice has recently launched a new initiative to offer people a choice of supporting a charity to mark their special occasion or celebration. If you are having a special celebration such as a Wedding, Civil Partnership, Christening or Birthday and want a gift list with a difference, then Compton Hospice has a range of options to consider.Your special day could make a difference to hundreds of patients with life-limiting illnesses, their carers and families. You could either ask your guests for donations to Compton Hospice instead of gifts or you can have special celebration favours as a unique way of thanking your guests for sharing your day with you.“People already have kettles and wine glasses, candles and ornaments” said Suzanne Davies, Senior Fundraiser for the hospice, “so why not for your wedding help others, by asking your guests to make a donation to Compton Hospice instead of buying gifts?”

There are many options available including asking your guests to make a donation in lieu of a gift to the hospice online at www.celebratewithcompton.co.uk and below is a list of what this could mean to patients at the hospice• £20.00 will pay for a

bereaved child to have a fun day out with a counsellor and other bereaved children, encouraging them to have fun and laugh again.

• £25.00 will provide a relaxing Complementary Therapy session for a patient.

• £50.00 will pay for a Lymphoedema patient to have a massage session, reducing pain caused by swollen limbs.

• £80.00 will buy a pager for our ward nurses to wear so they are always contactable by patients.

• £128.00 will pay for a Homecare Nurse to visit a patient in their own homes.

• £155.00 will pay for a patient to visit our Day Unit.

• £173.00 will pay for a night sitter nurse to stay overnight in a patients home to support the family.

• £663.00 covers the cost of a 24 hour stay in our In-patient Unit.

Another option would be for people to use our pre-printed gift envelopes, which you simply give out with your invitations for your guests to return them sealed, with their donation included, either to yourself or to the hospice directly at the address printed on the envelope. You could also add an alternative gift list with your gift envelopes.Donating to Compton Hospice instead of buying traditional sugared almonds is a very meaningful way of thanking your guests for sharing your special day with you. You can request personalised favour cards at £1.00 each, which have the option of adding a pin badge to them at £1.50 per badge and card.“Order celebration favours it’s so simple to do, securely order online 28 days before your wedding to ensure they are delivered on time” added Suzanne Davies. Finally, losing a loved one is a very hard and senseless experience. Fundraising can be a practical way of remembering your loved one and a way of raising money for a cause that was important to them. It can also help to bring purpose to this time of loss.“We chose to ask for donations instead of buying flowers at Dad’s

funeral. We were really touched by how much was raised especially as we knew what a good cause it was going to, as Compton cared for Dad.”

“We bought pin badges for everyone who attended the funeral. It was a lovely gesture for everyone to wear them and still to this day, whenever I wear mine, I feel closer to Mum.”

We are very grateful to all who support us in their time of grief by making donations. If you would like to make a donation in remembrance of a loved one then please do not hesitate to contact the fundraising department on 0845 2255 497 for a chat on how to make this personal to you.

We can help by supplying you with pre-printed gift envelopes which you simply distribute. They can be sealed and returned either to you or the hospice directly at the address printed on the envelope.

You can also purchase pin badges, or if you are unsure how many you will need please give us a call on 0845 2255 497 as we can provide them on a sale or return basis.

As a member of the National Pawnbrokers association, Carats offer loans on gold jewellery, prestigious watches and valuables. Many people are choosing to take out a loan against their jewellery at Carats rather than risk spiralling into uncontrollable debt with credit cards and bank charges.

Our rates are very competitive and won’t be beaten in the Wolverhampton area.

Take in a piece of gold jewellery for example and at Carats you can turn that gold into an instant cash loan.

You choose to borrow a set amount of money for a period of anywhere up to 7 months, or you can pay it off early with greatly reduced charges. Your valuables are then left in the caring capable hands of the helpful staff who secure them.

Your jewellery will remain untouched by human hands until you return to redeem it. After 7 months you have the option of extending the loan for a further period.

If you have received a cheque from your employer, electricity company, or any other type of cheque and you don’t want to wait 7 days for it to clear in the bank, take it to Carats. For a modest fee they will cash the cheque for you and you get the money instantly.

Carats also offers a payday advance service where you can borrow up to £300 cash until you get paid.

If you have items of high value Carats will even do discreet home visits, just call and speak to one of their friendly staff to arrange an appointment.

Loans available from £20 to £20,000.So there is no need to worry about how you will afford to pay that inflated bill in time.

It’s all change at Wolverhampton Racecourse following an extensive refurbishment of their first floor conferencing, hospitality and events facilities. The refurbishment process began back in April, and the new facilities were launched at a Grand Opening Event

on the 11th July, with a selection of local businesses, press and media attending. Wolverhampton Racecourse has seen a radical transformation of the meeting rooms, hospitality suites and banqueting suites.

With the refurbishment complete, they are raring to show off all their hard work, which includes a new stylish décor, fixtures & fittings, new bars and furniture, plus an upgraded IT system for their conferencing facility.

Summer Lawn Care

Following the driest spring for 20 years, early summer was wetter than average, which is good news for greening up lawns and making grass look healthier."Sadly, it's also ideal for weeds which grow rampantly now," explains The Shropshire Lawn Company's Mark Lowndes. "Lawns can suddenly appear over run, with blue speedwell and yellow trailing clover appearing to be particularly virulent on the sandier soils around Wolverhampton this summer.

"Fortunately, these and most other weeds can be removed with an effective application of weed control - and the peak growing season is the ideal time to tackle them."

Forecasters are still predicting a warm, dry summer and if it becomes too dry the grass may start to brown and die off. One of the ways to minimise the effects of drought is to increase the height of your mower blades, and resist cutting the grass too frequently.

"With the right approach to mowing and some extra help through regular feeds and weed control, lawns can look vibrant and green throughout the summer."

And there’s no excuse for neglect, the temperature is warmer, the days longer, the light better, so what more do you want? After all your home is probably the biggest investment you will ever make in your life apart from your children, and it’s important to keep it in good shape. A house is, so they say, a machine for living in and how many machines do you know of that will run for ever without proper maintenance?

Necessity established, what is your next move? A quick survey should be first. Take a pad and pen and, starting inside at the top, work your way through every room and passageway, noting down problem areas as you go. Look for flaking paint, damp patches on walls and ceiling, doors that need draught excluders, windows that rattle, let in draughts, have cracked glass or need replacing, skirtings that seem to have dropped a touch, light fittings far beyond their best, electric points that no longer fit snugly to the wall, creaking floor boards, wobbly door handles, locks that stick, taps that drip and anything else that presents itself. You can probably deal with most of that yourself, draught excluders especially are among the cheapest to buy and easiest to fit of all home improvements. Damp patches and electrical problems will obviously need further investigation and you may have to call in a professional.

Pop up into the loft and check the insulation is everywhere, thick and snug except under the water tank where it should be non-existent. Check there are no loose tiles you

can see, that the roof lining is in one piece, that there is no sign of infestation by insect or rodent. It’s worth remembering that the thicker the loft insulation the more effective the insulation properties, so another layer might be a good idea.

Next move outside and begin again. Check that all woodwork is in good repair, note any with flaking paint or signs of rot. Look at the roof for slipped tiles. Examine the gutters for slippage, blockage or leaks. Grass will grow up there better than on the lawn if you allow it to, and birds seem to love building nests in gutters. Make sure the down pipes are connected appropriately to them. Green algae growth on brickwork is a sure sign of water penetration. Flaking bricks may need replacing. Look carefully at the damp course and make sure it has not been breached or covered with soil. The drains will need scrutiny too. Make sure they are not blocked with leaves or other rubbish.

All exterior woodwork needs careful attention; it is far more exposed than that inside. Flaking paint will no longer prove protection. Rotten wooden window frames will soon fall way taking the windows with

them - perhaps replacement windows are required? Exterior doors need the same attention indeed, unless they are in the best of repair, they will no longer provide the burglar-proof barrier you need, let alone keep out the weather. Front doors are usually fine but back doors often get overlooked and they usually provide the perfect way in for unwanted guests. Hanging a door is a fiddly business for an amateur, try if you wish but unless you are really sure you know what you are doing, send for a professional.

Whatever your maintenance or repair problem, your local DIY store or builders’ merchant will be happy to provide the advice, tools and materials you need. Be wary though, there are many jobs that a professional builder can tackle that a DIY fiend will find difficult if not impossible. Some jobs indeed can be downright dangerous when tackled by an enthusiastic amateur.

In the final analysis, as long as you know what your property’s faults are and you get them dealt with, it doesn’t matter a jot who does them as long as they are all done well!

With summer upon us and the weather comparatively better, the time is ripe for setting about getting your home fit for next winter.

We were delighted when over 350 cyclists turned out on Saturday 11 June to help Brewood Scouts Fundraisers raise money for a new Scout Hut. This, their second annual charity ride, started in glorious sunshine (up ‘til lunchtime) from the Brewood Middle School. There were a choice of three rides, 10 miles for beginners, 30 miles for the more experienced and 60 miles for serious cyclists.

The 60 milers were flagged off at 9.00 a.m. by Lynne Taylor from Bridgtown Cycles. Lynne is the ladies world record holder for both Lands End to John O’Groats and

the 1000 miles. In 2001 Lynne completed the Lands End run of 844 miles in 2 days and 5 hours and then went on to complete the 1000 miles in a further 9 hours.

Entrants were looked after with tea and biscuits provided by the local Co-op and on route from 6 marshal stations providing snacks, bananas and water. At the end they had a hot meal, tea and were entertained to live music from Lydia Jones.

Raffle prizes were supplied by Fred Williams Cycles and Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, who donated a bottle of Houses Of Commons wine.

Bridgtown Cycles provided free goody bags and Pedal Home offered a free check up for those

entrants requiring some last minute fettling, gear adjustment and tyres pumping up.

Radio Communication between marshals and home were provided by Stafford and District Amateur Radio Society – RAYNET.

Brewood Scout Fundraisers would like to thank the too many to mention volunteers who gave up a day to help organise and run this event which could not have taken place without them.

We look forward to seeing you all again at next year’s event. Look out for details on our website www.brewoodcyclechallenge.com

the Church pool

Joseph with a 4lb Tench he caught from the Lady Barbara pool

Most people only associate Patshull with the Great Lake and trout fishing but further into the estate are the Church and Lady Barbara Pools. Run as annual membership pools, the Church being a carp syndicate and the Lady Barbara a course syndicate.

The Church Pool has a mix of common and mirror carp weighing up to 35lbs. A lot of the original fish are still in the pool after 27 years. Over the last 5 years another 150 fish have been stocked at various sizes from 8lb to 20lb.

The Lady Barbara Pool has a good mix of course fish but it is mainly the Bream and Tench which anglers target as both go close to double figures.

The South Staffordshire Golf Club once again staged The PTS Invitational over three days between 8th – 10th June. Covered again by the Sky TV cameras, 90 professionals partnered for 2 days by an Amateur partner tackled the demanding course and South Staffs Head Professional Peter Baker, credited an improved putter for his narrow victory.

The former Ryder Cup player added a final round 68 to rounds of 72 and 66 for a 7-under par total of 206 to claim a one stroke victory over Wellingborough's Simon Lilly.

Baker produced a devastating birdie blitz around the turn to take a two shot advantage heading into the deciding holes. A tense back nine followed when Lilly's birdie at the 16th brought him within one stroke but a curling 12 foot putt for another at the last somehow rolled around the cup leaving a relieved Baker two putts for victory.

"The first round was frustrating with a few loose shots out there, but the last two days have been steadier and the putts have dropped nicely too, I'm pleased with the win but even happier with the success of the event, it's been a great week," said Baker.

The winner's sentiments were echoed by main sponsors Plumbing Trade Supplies and its managing director Kelvin Stevens,

whose customers were taking part in the two day amateur event were very satisfied ones.

"We were over-subscribed this year for clients of ours taking part, they all had a great time, and there's already a number of them asking about next years event, its been a big success for us yet again."

The lengthened course, featuring four new tees, proved to be very tough with only three of the Professionals managing to break par after 54 holes in the PGA Midland Region's first Order of Merit event of the 2011 season, which carried a bumper prize purse of £17,000 donated by main sponsor PTS.

Amateur Mike Ankers won the two day Pro-Am event with PGA Cup player Danny Taylor (Swingers Golf Centre) after a two round -17 total saw them edge out Tom Pearson and Simon Lilly by just a single shot.

Peter Baker receives the trophy from PTS Managing Director, Kelvin Stevens.

Motorists in Wolverhampton are being invited to check into a revolutionary new tyre hotel in the city, which has been built to keep the roads moving later in the year.Following Britain’s Big Freeze in 2010, HiQ Chapel Ash is already being inundated with requests for seasonal tyres – six months before temperatures are set to drop significantly. The demand is so huge already this year, that HiQ owner Simon Bennett has created a ‘hotel’ to store drivers’ current set of tyres while they swap to winter alternatives.

The site will be able to store 200 tyres and will be free for motorists to utilize once the time comes to switch tyres.Simon said: “There is a common perception that we don’t need winter tyres in Britain because we don’t get much snow, but that viewpoint couldn’t be further from the truth.“We are dealing with an unprecedented demand for the seasonal products right now, which is why we are making early provisions to make sure we are not caught out by the cold.“Motorists are beginning to realise that they can’t go on like they have done in the last two winters and want to protect themselves. Everything ground to a halt in the West Midlands during the Big Freeze and much of this was down to drivers failing

to change their everyday tyres, which are designed for use in milder temperatures.“The rest of Europe view winter tyres as a necessity, and I think we are beginning to catch-up now. With this in mind, I don’t think my tyre hotel will be the first – or last – to be created.”Regular tyres harden when the temperature drops below seven degrees, meaning they have less traction on the road. This not only means the risk of spinning off the road is increased, but also the stopping distance is longer if you have to make an emergency stop.Winter tyre rubber compounds have a higher proportion of natural rubber and a higher silicone content, to minimise the hardening effect at low temperatures.

AFC Wulfrunians – Looking Forward To The New SeasonIt doesn’t seem five minutes since last season ended but already the new season is upon us.Last season finished on a high note with us winning the prestigious JW Hunt Cup and finishing 3rd in the West Midlands Premier. Our Under 18's also won the Midland Floodlit Youth League Northern Division, a success that sees them promoted to the Premier Division for this season.

As always, we don’t intend to stand still and are looking to improve both on and off the pitch for the upcoming season. On the pitch new players have been recruited and a tough pre-season schedule, including games against Hednesford Town, Chasetown and Causeway has been put in place. This should see the team raring to go by the time the season starts on Saturday 6th August.

The opening round of the FA Cup this season sees us travel to Midland Combination side

Bloxwich United on Saturday 20th August while the opening round of the FA Vase sees us play host to fellow WMRL side Shifnal Town on Saturday 10th September. Full details of our fixtures will be posted on our web site www.afcwulfrunians.co.uk and everyone is welcome to come and watch (admission £4 adults, £2 concessions).

Off the pitch we are always looking to increase our income from commercial opportunities, whether through investment, sponsorship or advertising. Running a stadium of the magnitude of the Castlecroft Stadium requires a lot of hard work from our volunteers and is also very costly. If there are any local businessmen or individuals willing to help us, we have opportunities available to suit any budget and would welcome prospective new revenue. We are also staging a Corporate Golf Day at Shifnal Golf Club on Friday 5th August. Again full details of all this can be found on our web site.

If you are interested in investing in AFC Wulfrunians, contact Paul on 07834 391284 or e-mail us at [email protected].

Three lucky winners can each win 4 tickets each to see RHINESTONE MONDAYS on Tuesday, 13th September at 7.30pm at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

Join the maverick members of the Warbleswick 'Monday Night All Star Line Dancing Club' as they fight, feud and ''dance'' their way through troubles, trials and heartaches at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre from Tuesday 13th to Saturday 17th September.

Meet Tom and Annie (will they ever get 'In-Line'?), Barrie (who thinks he's Johnny Cash!), Duncan (Shania Twain he is not - but who is going to tell him?), Ronald (sorry 'Clint' on Mondays) who thinks he drives a 'rig' for a supermarket chain! Meanwhile Sophie is doing a bit of Patsy Cline and driving everyone Crazy. Tempers are getting a bit frayed, so stand by for an Achy Breaky Heart - there is a traitor in the ranks and mutiny on the horizon.

Starring Shaun Williamson, Faye Tozer and Ian H Watkins.

This light-hearted romantic comedy is fired by a classic soundtrack of favourite 'countreeeee' hits - so make sure you don't miss the stampede for tickets!
