WELCOME TO WODONGA LITTLE ATHLETICS – SEAN STREAT - PRESIDENT

Wodonga Little Athletics is held at the Wodonga athletics complex, 83 Victoria Cross Parade, Wodonga on

Saturday Mornings from 8:30am-Noon.

The Wodonga Centre’s aim is to provide athletic events in a friendly and happy environment with an

emphasis on participation, skill development and personal best improvement.

In 2018-2019 training (weather permitting) will be provided on Wednesday afternoons throughout the

season from 5:00pm-6:00pm and some Mondays. More information will be posted on our social media

channels regarding this.

Parental supervision is mandatory at the centre. Children should not be dropped and left at the centre

unattended.

FEES: 2018-2019

U6 to U16 - $120 per Athlete

Family Discounts apply to second or subsequent children ($110 per Athlete)

It is also recommended that children wear the centre uniform each week.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION – WEATHER POLICIES

Wet Weather / Rain

In the event of heavy rain, the track may become unsuitable for competition. The executive committee will

inspect the track at 7:30am on the day of competition and decide as to whether the program will run or

not.

Competition will not be held in the event of lightning and potential storms may also halt or delay

competition.

Confirmation will be posted to both TeamApp and Facebook immediately and to the website as soon as

possible.

There will be a notice placed at the Athletic Complex to confirm.

Extreme Heat

As a centre we follow the policies and guidelines of LA Vic. Competition WILL go ahead until the

temperature reaches 38 or the executive committee deem the conditions unsafe or unsuitable to run.

Please ensure that your children have sunscreen on, a wide brimmed hat to wear in between events and

plenty of water throughout the morning on warm days.

Your responsibilities

As a parent can choose to keep your child/ren home and they are not obliged to compete if you feel the

conditions may be unsuitable for your child. Only you are able to determine what is best for your child.

Program Delays or cancellation

Should a program need to be cancelled, the executive committee will review options to re-schedule that

program. This may not be possible due to association commitments and availability of volunteers.

This season should a program be cancelled, the following week will continue in sequential order to the

scheduled program and the cancelled program will be missed unless it is able to be rescheduled.

WLAC CHAMPIONSHIP POINT SYSTEM

Each week 6 participation points are awarded for every event an athlete competes in. Additional points are

then awarded for athletes coming first, second or third in their event or if they break a centre record.

Awards for this season will be based on the following points for each age group.

U6 to U16 Boys & Girls.

1st Boy and Girl 6 points

2nd Boy and Girl 4 points

3rd Boy and Girl 2 points

All other competitors / Participation Points 6 points

Centre Records (CBP) 7 points

RCH Change for Kids (Relayathon) participation 15 points at the beginning of the day 15 points at the end of the day Border Challenge Cup participation 10 points per event (4 events = max 40 pts)

PLEASE NOTE: Heats are held in most track events and although your child may win his/her heat, it may not

necessarily be the fastest time. All times are collated & places given to the fastest times overall, per event in

each age group.

If an athlete becomes ill or is injured during the day of competition and is unable to continue the program,

please note on the recording sheet. The athlete will then receive participation points for the remainder of

the program. This is the only time an athlete will be given participation points for events not completed.

NO POINTS ARE GIVEN IF AN ATHLETE CHOOSES NOT TO DO A PARTICULAR EVENT, OR MISSES THEIR EVENT.

PERSONAL BEST AWARDS

Personal Best awards are awarded to all athletes who reach the following milestones throughout the

season. PB awards are presented on a Saturday morning prior to competition commencing.

Silver PB Certificate 15 PB’s in a season

Gold PB Certificate 20 PB’s in a season

PB Medal 25 PB’s in a season

PB Trophy 30 PB’s in a season

PARTICIPATION MEDAL

Medals of Participation will be awarded to those athletes who participate in a minimum of 60% of centre

events from the beginning of the season. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the executive for

children who have commenced the season late.

A gold medal and PB certificate will be awarded for 90% or higher participation.

A silver medal and PB certificate will be awarded for 75% or higher participation.

A bronze medal and PB certificate will be awarded for 60% or higher participation.

Participation under 60% will be issued with a PB certificate only.

INSURANCE

Membership with Little Athletics Australia includes cover under the Little Athletics Australia National

Insurance Program. This program is handled by V-Insurance Group (Corporate authorised representative of

Willis), LAVic’s insurance broker.

CENTRE RULES OF COMPETITION

Age Groups – U6 to U16 age groups Age groups in Season 2018/2019 are as per Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2018.

Please note athletes must turn 5 years of age prior to December 31 to register.

IMPORTANT: If it is your child’s first registration or they have had a season off, you will also need to

produce proof of age (birth certificate or passport).

Age Group is by month and year of birth. Athletes listed in red in the below table will repeat the Under 6 in

the 2019/2020 season as they turned 5 after the commencement of the registration year. These athletes

(in particular) although displayed in the table must have turned 5 prior to registering.

What age group is my athlete in?

• Centre Uniform – The centre prefers all athletes to wear the centre uniform of a singlet or crop top with

centre shorts for Saturday competition. LaVic regulations require athletes to wear the approved centre

uniform at all LAVic events.

Athletes age group name patches must be attached to the front of their singlet or crop top each week.

Failure to wear the name/age patch may result in an athlete not being recorded & receiving points for

their events.

NOTE: The committee recommends the wearing of T-shirts, Hats & SPF30+ or higher Sunscreen, in keeping

with the Anti-Cancer Council recommendations and WLAC Sun Protection Policy.

It is recommended athletes wearing a singlet or crop top be “sun smart” and cover up between their events

by wearing a T-shirt.

Please ensure all hats & clothing are named to help with lost property.

• Footwear / Spikes – Athletes must wear runners at all times during competition.

NO BARE FEET are permitted.

• Spikes – Refer to table below.

All athletes wearing Spikes MUST remove them at the completion of each event.

• Crouch Starts – This season all athletes, U6-U16 are allowed to perform a standing start for all track

events.

• Starting Blocks – At the Wodonga centre starting blocks may be used by U12 to U16 athletes for track

events up to & including the 400m.

• Blood Rule – Children with blood on their body or clothing will be unable to participate in the activities of

the centre until the blood is removed.

• Competition Times – Athletics is held between 8.30 am and 1.00 pm Saturdays. Warm ups are held at

8.30am prior to the commencement of each program for the younger age groups. The older age groups

commence at 8:30am for safety and continuity.

• Javelin, 300H and Walk events will commence at 8.30am when programmed.

• Athletes must not cross the main straight of the track when going to field events. Crossing points are at

either end of the front straight.

• Only athletes, age group co-ordinators, volunteers and designated officials are permitted onto the arena.

Children not competing should remain on the hill for their and the other athletes’ safety.

• The Wodonga Centre Executive may suspend any athlete or parent who persistently misbehaves or

breaches the LAVic Code of conduct from participating in all centre activities.

• General complaints regarding officials, athletes, the conducting of events or the centre MUST be directed

to a member of the executive committee.

• No Dogs are permitted at the centre on competition days for the safety of the athletes and the animals.

Assistance animals are permitted. Please notify the committee if you have an assistance animal.

PARENT SUPERVISION AND VOLUNTEERING

Approximately 70 parents are needed each competition day to act as officials, co-ordinators, canteen

volunteers and helpers to enable the centre to run the mornings activities. Little Athletics is a family activity

and parents are expected to participate by performing a role or duty at some point throughout the season.

Parents are required to be on duty as required throughout the season.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITY: Parent participation is essential to ensure the successful running of Little Athletic

events. Please remember that when you, the parent, agree to your child taking part in little athletics, you

are indicating that you, as a parent, will act as an official when rostered or asked to do so.

The tasks of officials are simple and can prove to be most enjoyable e.g. raking, measuring, recording,

clocking. Become a regular Official & become a part of Little Athletics.

Children must not be dropped off unsupervised on competition days or coaching/training nights. A

Parent or Guardian must be in attendance.

It is your responsibility as a Parent or Guardian to be in attendance to take care of them. If there is no

parent or guardian present, then your child will be unable to participate.

Because Little Athletics is a totally voluntary organisation, Centres cannot operate without the assistance of

parents each week in fulfilling the many and varied duties required. These include officiating at an event;

managing an age group; recording results; working in the canteen; to name just a few. Most Centres have

parent duty rosters. Additional assistance is always required on the Centre committees and all parents are

encouraged to become involved. Little Athletics is one of the few sports where parents can become fully

involved in their child's sporting interests.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS

Committee meetings are usually held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month throughout the year (not

season) with the exception of the December and January meeting which usually happen on the 1st Tuesday

of the month at the Athletic Complex, starting at 7.00pm.

Session briefings are held after competition on a Saturday or as required throughout the season. All

interested persons are welcome to attend.

COACHING/TRAINING

SUBJECT TO THE AVAILABILITY OF COACHES, coaching will be held at the Wodonga Athletic Complex on a

Monday or Wednesday night.

Training: Training for all athletes will be held on a Wednesday night from 5:30pm – 6:30pm if a volunteer is

available.

All Registered athletes are welcome to attend (centre uniform not required)

ATHLETIC CARNIVALS/OPEN DAYS

During the athletic season centres throughout Victoria & NSW hold Carnivals/Open Days.

These days provide a great opportunity for registered athletes to gain experience and have fun competing

with athletes from other centres’.

Events are added to the Facebook page regularly and we recommend athletes try to enter 1 or 2

throughout the season as a great way to meet new friends and continue their athletics journey

If you are interested in entering please speak to our Secretary or Registrar prior to the closing date noted

on the website or the Facebook event.

RULES OF PARTICIPATION AT ATHLETIC CARNIVALS, OPEN DAYS AND REGION/STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

All athletes are required to remain in the designated Wodonga Centre area to enable the Team Manager/s

to marshall them for their events at the required time. If athletes are not present at the marshalling time

they will risk missing out on their event.

Parents - When entering your child/children in Carnivals/Open Days, all parents will be required to act as an

official when requested. This may unfortunately be when your child is competing. The Team manager will

try to avoid team clashes; however, this is sometimes unavoidable.

Please note qualification periods and registration requirements are the responsibility of the athlete and

their guardian. WLAC will not be responsible if your child is deemed ineligible to compete by LAVic.

Team Managers may collect medals/trophies etc. on behalf of athletes.

Parents are not to be on the track or field unless they are acting as an official. Failure to adhere to this rule

may see your athlete/s disqualified.

CENTRE FUNDRAISING

Fundraising is required as part of the on-going maintenance of equipment and support of our Athletes at

WLAC.

Throughout the year there will be many fundraising activities run by committee to raise funds for the club.

If you can help in any way, whether you have an idea for an event or are able to solicit donations that will

benefit the club or the Athletes directly, please speak to our Publicity and Fundraising Officer.

SPONSORSHIP

The club has many varied sponsorship packages available to those who may wish to help the centre. If you

are interested in sponsoring WLAC please e-mail the secretary ([email protected]) and we will send

you our proposals starting from $100.00 per season.

SUN PROTECTION POLICY

The Wodonga Little Athletic Centre is aware that children are especially susceptible to the sun’s rays and

that skin cancer can be prevented.

The following strategies have been adopted:

1. Wherever possible competition and training shall be scheduled outside the hours of 11:00am and

3:00pm (daylight saving time).

2. The Centre/Region will maximise the use of natural shade provided by trees and buildings:

3. Individuals will be encouraged to bring their own shade structures to Centre and Region activities.

4. Where possible, portable shade will be provided at all field event venues and track marshalling areas.

5. Officials shall promote the wearing of sun protective clothing: shirts with long sleeves and a collar,

wide brimmed or legionnaire hats and sunglasses.

6. Athletes will be advised to take umbrellas, drink bottles and sunscreen to events. Hats and

sunglasses may be worn during competition.

7. SPF 15+ or higher sunscreen will be promoted and made available by the Centre/Region.

8. Event programs, newsletter and public announcement will be used to maintain awareness of and

promote sun protection.

9. Centre/Region officials and coaches will act as sun protection role models..

HEALTHY FOOD CHOICE POLICY

The Centre/Region is aware that healthy eating is a vital part of good health. We recognize that lifestyle

diseases such as heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, non-insulin dependent diabetes and obesity are all

associated with the food we eat.

We acknowledge that healthy eating can have an impact on the lives of our members, and that the

provision of healthy foods will contribute to better health for all. Enjoying a variety of foods from the

different food groups is the key to healthy eating.

The Centre/Region will ensure that a variety of healthy food choices are available for all its activities. This

applies to all meetings, competitions, functions and events and to all members, officials, players,

volunteers, spectators, visitors and any others taking part in activities.

The following strategies have been adopted to ensure that a variety of healthy food choices are available at

all Centre/Region activities.

1. The Centre/Region canteen (where applicable) will provide a variety of healthy food choices.

2. Healthy food choices will be available at all Centre/Region events and functions.

3. The enjoyment of healthy eating and the role of food in relation to health will be promoted at

Centre/Region activities and in Centre/Region publications.

4. Healthy food choices will be displayed more prominently than other foods.

HEALTHY FOOD CHOICE POLICY - CONTINUED

5. Healthy food choices will be priced competitively.

6. The variety of confectionery, potato chips, soft drinks and ice creams will be limited.

7. The Centre/Region will attempt to introduce at least two new healthy food choices to the

Centre/Region, each season.

RESPONSIBLE ALCOHOL MANAGEMENT POLICY

The Centre / Region is aware that alcohol, when misused can cause harm to the drinker and others. A

responsible drinking policy has been adopted so as to reduce risks and avoid problems

The following strategies have been adopted:

1. There will be no sale or consumption of alcohol during the conduct of any Little Athletics events

2. Where alcohol is consumed at a Centre/Region function the following measures will be taken;

i. Alcohol will not be served to minors, or in front of minors.

ii. Alcohol will not be served to any person who is intoxicated.

iii. Low alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks will be available and promoted.

iv. Water will be available at no cost at functions where alcohol is served.

v. Healthy food options will be available when alcohol is served.

vi. Members who have been drinking will be encouraged to use safe transport options.

3. There will be no alcohol advertising at any venue used by the Centre/Region.

4. The Centre/Region will not accept any alcohol related sponsorship or use alcohol as a prize for

fundraising activities.

5. The Centre/Region will comply with Liquor Licensing Victoria (LLV) regulations.

SMOKE-FREE POLICY

The Centre/Region is aware that smoking endangers health and believes that all Little Athletics venues and

functions should be Smoke Free. In an open park the venue is defined as “the area inside an imaginary

boundary 50 metres from the outside perimeter of the circular track”.

The following strategies have been adopted to promote a Smoke Free environment:

1. Cigarettes shall not be sold at any venue used by the Centre/Region.

2. Executive members, coaches and officials shall not smoke in view of the public or athletes during the

lead up to and conduct of Little Athletics events.

3. All Centre/Region meetings and functions shall be smoke-free.

4. All areas within the Centre/Region will be Smoke Free, including: the clubrooms, canteen, changing

room, toilet blocks, spectator areas, and competing areas.

SMOKE FREE POLICY - CONTINUED

5. The Centre/Region will place no smoking signs in prominent positions and remove ashtrays from all

no smoking areas.

6. The Centre/Region will ensure that smokers have a place outside the venue or out of public view,

where they can smoke, and provide them with ashtrays/bins.

7. Reference will be made to the Smoke Free policy in Centre/Region publications.

8. Regular announcements will be made to ensure that members and visitors are aware of the Centre’s

Smoke Free policy. Signs provided by the Association will be placed in the venue.

9. All visitors will be required to observe this policy. Non-compliance with the policy will be handled by

an explanation of the Centre’s/Region’s Smoke Free policy to the person, including the identification

of areas in which smoking is allowed. In the case of continued non-compliance with the policy,

Centre/Region officials will use their direction as to the steps to be taken, which may include asking

the person to leave the premises or function.

ADVICE TO PARENTS

1. Encourage children to participate, if they are interested. If a child is not willing, do not force him or

her.

2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the outcome of the event.

3. Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that results are accepted without

undue disappointment.

4. Encourage children to always participate according to the rules.

5. Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing.

6. Remember children are involved in organised sports for THEIR enjoyment, not yours.

7. Children learn best by example. Applaud good efforts by all children.

8. Do not publicly question the official’s judgement, and never their honesty.

9. Recognise the value and importance of Volunteer Coaches and Officials. They give of their time and

resources to provide recreational activities for the children and deserve your support.

Little Athletics Victoria expects all members to comply with the Code of Conduct. Appropriate action may

be taken in the case of any breaches of the Code of Conduct.

Little Athletics Victoria will ensure that all athletes, coaches, spectators, parents, officials and

administrators are not prone to sexual abuse, neglect, physical abuse or emotional abuse. They will ensure

that all persons are included, protected and not discriminated against in any manner.

Little Athletics Victoria is registered as an Incorporated Association as protection for its Centres,

Committees and its Members.

LITTLE ATHLETES CODE OF CONDUCT

➢ Play by the rules

➢ Never argue with an official, if you disagree, ask your Team Manager or Age Manager to deal with

the matter.

➢ Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, coaches, parents or other athletes, deliberately

distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in our sport.

➢ Work equally hard for yourself and/or your Centre/Club. Your Centre/Club’s performance will

benefit.

➢ Be a good sport. Applaud all good results whether they are by your Centre/Club, opponent or the

other Centre/Club.

➢ Treat all athletes, as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair

advantage of another athlete.

➢ Co-operate with officials, coaches, club mates and other participants. Without them there would be

no competition.

➢ Participate in Little Athletics for the “fun of it” and not just to please parents and coaches.

➢ Avoid use of bad language.

COACHES CODE OF CONDUCT

➢ Be reasonable in your demands on young athlete’s time, energy and enthusiasm.

➢ Teach athletes the rules of the sport are mutual agreements, which no one should evade or break.

➢ Whenever possible, group athletes to give a reasonable chance of success.

➢ Avoid over-coaching the better performing athletes, the “just average” athletes need and deserve

equal time.

➢ Ensure any physical contact with athletes is appropriate to the situation and necessary for the

athlete’s skills development.

➢ Avoid situations with your athletes that could be construed as compromising.

WLAC PROGRAMS

Please Note: As part of our duty of care, the executive committee reserves the right to change the

program and days of competition, if the weather conditions, volunteer base or other unforeseen factors

would deem competition unsuitable. All attempts will be made to run the programs as scheduled

including during light rain.

1. Athletes may participate in up to 6 events during Saturday competition.

2. Points will only be awarded for programmed events participated in, on the day of competition.

3. In case of illness or injury occurring during the day of competition, participation points will only be

awarded if noted on event sheets.

4. All athletes are encouraged to participate in all events offered for their age group at least once during

LAVIC POLICY - WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK – WWC CHECK

People working or volunteering in connection with Little Athletics are now required to have their WWC

Check, if they fall into one of the categories below.

• Region Executive Committee members

• Centre Executive Committee members

• Club Executive Committee members

• Coaches

• Officials at State and Region level – (not parent helpers who’s child is participating on the day)

• Team Managers

• Volunteers without children registered at the Centre

• Overnight Supervisors at camps/clinics/functions

• First Aid Personnel

• Volunteers at Association run activities, (not Centre events).

Parents, who have a child registered at the Centre where they work or volunteer, are exempt from the

WWC Check, unless they fall under one of the categories listed above.

POLICE CHECKS

Police checks are secondary to the WWC Checks in relation to the positions listed in this policy. If you have

a Police Check, you still require a WWC Check if you perform one of the duties listed in this policy. The

WWC Check will not preclude the need for a Police check to be undertaken for certain positions within the

Association / Regions / Centres. These positions include elected / appointed management positions

including positions of financial control. Please refer to the Policy on Police checks for further details.

CHILD SAFE POLICY

Little Athletics Victoria are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people involved

in Little Athletics. The rights of children are fundamental.

Little Athletics Victoria support the active participation of children in Little Athletics.

BORDER CHALLENGE CUP – 24TH NOVEMBER 2018

The centres of Wodonga, Albury & Lavington/Jindera have come together once a year for many years to

compete for the Border Challenge Cup Trophy. The venue alternates each year between Wodonga & Albury

(Lavington/Jindera compete at the Albury track as well)

Records broken by Wodonga athletes will be recognised & points awarded accordingly when held at

Wodonga on the grass surface.

When Albury hosts the event on the synthetic surface, athletes PB’s & Wodonga records cannot be

recognised in track events, due to the different surface they are competing on.

This year, Wodonga centre will host the event on Saturday morning the 24th November 2018. The program

will commence at 8.30am.

A special 4-event program is conducted for all age groups. The point scoring is based on overall placing’s

per event & age group.

Points are awarded per centre :-

1st place = 3 points 2nd place = 2 points 3rd place = 1 point

The centre with the most points at the end of the program wins the Trophy.

All Wodonga athletes are expected to participate in this event. This is part of our end of year Age Group

Award System, with 10 points per event awarded in all age groups.

LAVIC REGION RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS U9 TO U16 – 17TH NOVEMBER 2018

The Northern Country Region Relays will be held on November 17 in Shepparton. Athletes will need to be

available all day from 9AM until 4PM on this day.

The Northern Country Region SUBWAY Region Relay Championships is our main team competition for the

season for U9 to U16 athletes. This is the only Championship where boys and girls can run against each

other in a mixed sex team. Athletes carry a baton which they pass onto the next member of their team.

Nominations will be sought for the Regional Relay in the weeks leading up to the event

There will be nomination forms available in the age group folders. Please note that a nomination does not

guarantee a spot in a relay team. The committee will do their best to include all nominations in a team.

Athletes interested in joining a team should register their interest with the centre secretary at the start of

the season.

Please note: All athletes who register for the region relays must be available to compete at the state finals

on the 15th December as team members cannot be substituted.

The 2018-2018 State Combined Event Championships will take place over two days at the Lakeside

Athletics Track, Albert Park

Date: Saturday the 02nd and 03rd February, 2019

Venue: Lakeside Athletics Track, Albert Park

Open to: U9 to U16 Registered Athletes

Entry is open to all Boys & Girls in the U9 to U16 age groups.

The Combined Events will consist of between five and seven separate disciplines. Events consisting of five

disciplines will be held on one day. Events consisting of more than five disciplines will be held on two

consecutive days. The following tables outline the disciplines for each age group and the day the discipline

will be held.

RELAYTHON ROUND – 13TH FEBRUARY 2019

The Annual State-wide event will be held on February 13th 2019 at Wodonga Little Athletics

The Relaython is fundraising event partnership between Little Athletics Victoria (LAVic) and the Royal

Children’s Hospital with the proceeds being presented as part of the annual Good Friday Appeal cheque.

Little Athletics Victoria has provided ongoing funding to the Royal Children’s Hospital for over 40 years

which is a great synergy between both organisations especially given that we are a children’s sporting

organisation.

The Royal Children’s Hospital has played a major role in many of our past and current member’s battle for

health and with our assistance has facilities which are considered some of the best in the Southern

Hemisphere.

This event forms part of our championship point system. Athletes will be issued with the following points

for participation:-

The 2019 Region Track & Field Carnivals are taking place at seven locations across Victoria.

Date: 16th of February 2019

Open To: U9 to U16 Athletes

Entries Open: TBA

Entries Close: 28th January 2019 (11:59pm)

Note: Athletes may only enter into a maximum of 4 events.

To be eligible to enter the Region Track & Field Carnivals, athletes must be registered and be a financial

Little Athletics Victoria Competitive Member by the closing date and time for entries.

They also must have competed in a minimum of 4 weeks of Centre competition by the close of entries. Any

competition held in the week of Region Relays is not included for eligibility purposes (Monday 12th

November to Sunday 18th November 2018).

Entries will be provisional until this participation criteria has been met.

First place in all events at Region T&F will qualify to progress to the State T&F Championships with the

exception of those who are placed 1st in the HJ and Walks. To progress in these 2 events athletes must

meet the qualifying standard in each event.

All entries are to be completed online.

The 2019 State Track & Field Championships will take place over the 16th and 17th of March 2019 at Casey

STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – SATURDAY 27 JULY 2019

Cross Country is traditionally the winter program in athletics and is an activity that provides good fun, is

challenging and offers competition and variety for children interested in running longer distances. The

races are usually held over terrain which varies in consistency not only from uphill and downhill, but also

from tracks, grassy to muddy conditions and often under varying climatic conditions. An added bonus of

doing cross country is the development and maintenance of fitness levels during the winter season which

can also be of benefit to participation in other winter sports.

In Little Athletics the Cross Country season runs from April to the end of July, culminating in State Cross

Country Championships for U9 to U16.

For all Cross Country championship events the distance covered by athletes for each race will be an

LAVIC JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT SQUAD (JDS)

The Junior Development Squad (JDS) gives U12 – U16 athletes an opportunity to develop additional skills

and improve technical competencies through participation in coaching and training sessions with some of

Victoria’s leading coaches. Training with other keen and enthusiastic squad members is both fun and

motivational and helps develop new friendships based on an enjoyment of athletics. The emphasis on

learning new athletic skills and improving existing ones is in a friendly and supportive environment.

To join JDS, athletes must achieve the qualifying standard in their current age group of the season. Athletes

must achieve one standard on two separate occasions or two different standards, once. This ensures that

the performances show a consistency and not just a once off.

Little Athletics competitions in Victoria are conducted in accordance with the Competition Rules of the

International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) currently in force.

Where it has been decided the IAAF Rules are not indicative or correct for athletes in the age groups covered

by LAVic, the IAAF Rule or part thereof has been rewritten to reflect the nature and abilities of athletes in the

various age groups.

There are also a number of Rules relating to State Championships and their processes which are not covered

by IAAF and these have been listed in a separate chapter.

Little Athletics Victoria is sincerely grateful to the IAAF for approval to use the IAAF Rules or parts thereof.
