May 2017
Fellow Lions Lionesses and Leos,
As the calendar turns to May the days get warmer and we all head outdoors. We
start to work in the yard, to plant summer flowers, and do yard work. We plant,
water and fertilize the new flowers and vegetables that we can enjoy all summer
long.
Getting new members for your club are a lot like the flowers we plant. We plant
the seed of Lionism in new members, but we sometimes forget to water and
fertilize them and we end up losing them.
Of the 34 Lions clubs in the District seven of them have had a positive growth in
membership this year. That is not counting our new club the Bridgeville Greater
Area Lions Club. Unfortunately, we lost the Wilmerding Lions club after 88 years
of service.
We have had a positive growth in the District this year of 8 new members. That is
a great job but we can do better. It is a wonderful time to plant the seed of Lionism
in potential new members. Our new members need to grow in Lionism. Always
ENCOURAGE them and never DISCOURAGE them. Keep your new members
active, and they will grow into GREAT LIONS.
Yours in Lionism,
(P)DG Rich

GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE... PDG Geoff Temple
Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14B,
It is said that we live in the information age. Anyone who has a smart phone can
enter a few keystrokes and find an answer to a question that might have caused us
a trip to the library in the past. Information at our fingertips is pretty amazing.
With all this technology available all the time, there should be no reason why
Lions shouldn’t have knowledge about what is going on in their club, their
District, the Multiple District, and Lions International. It seems, however, that
many times we Lions are not aware what is currently happening. Therefore, my
theme this month is that communication matters.
You might think that this message is mostly directed at club Secretaries since they
are the primary recipients and dispensers of information from the District, the
Multiple District, and LCI. It seems to me that communication is the
responsibility of all Lions. For example, if you are a chairperson for an event that
your club is holding, whether it is a service project or a fund raiser, it is important
that all club members be kept informed at how things are progressing and how all
members might be able to help. It takes every member doing his/her part to make
sure that a project is a success. Maybe communicate with neighboring clubs so
that they may support you. Please make sure that PDG Harold Fletcher is aware
of your project so that it can be placed in the Cauldron.
In last month’s edition of the Cauldron the editor, PDG Harold, mentioned the
importance of filing a PU101 to inform LCI the names of the club officers for the
upcoming year. This is important so that LCI knows to whom communications
should be addressed. Also this is how the District gets their information for the
District directory. Club Secretaries please file this information as soon as the new
officers are confirmed.
Email is another method to get the word out to members and to the public. Many
clubs make sure that a copy of the meeting minutes is emailed to every member
whether they are a board member or not. Maybe consider sending a hard copy of
the minutes to those who do not have or use email. This keeps all informed.
Websites and social media are other great communication tools. If your club has
a website, please try to make an effort to keep the site current. Many people check
websites often and perhaps your site would attract interest in your club or fund
raiser. Also, please be aware that the LCI website is a wealth of information
regarding everything to do with Lionism. A portion of your dues go to LCI to help
underwrite the cost of this service so why not take advantage of it. Also the
Multiple District and the District have websites and various social media sites that
contain very useful information.
We have so many technology and information resources at our disposal. Let’s use
them to make Lionism work better for all.
Communication is what makes a team strong
Yours in Lionism,
1st VDG Geoff

SECOND VICE DISTRICT
GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE... Lion Kirby Marchand
Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos, and friends of District 14-B,
April showers bring May flowers, and we’ve certainly had a lot of April showers this
year; can the May flowers be far behind! Along with May flowers comes the Kentucky
Derby on the first Saturday in May In the spirit of the Kentucky Derby, the Directors
of the Annual McKeesport Hospital Foundation have decided to revamp the Annual
Lions Auction for Diabetes by changing it to an Auction and Night at the Races. These
changes were made to freshen the event, making it more fun and hopefully allowing
it to appeal to a wider audience. The directors are proud of our newly revamped event
and the many successes that this long-standing tradition has allowed us to accomplish.
Each year, the Diabetes Medication Relief Fund provides tens of thousands of dollars
to supply medication for diabetic patients that could not otherwise afford it.This Fund,
operated by the Lions of Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties (Districts 14-B and
14-E), has been helping people for 24 years, providing over $400,000 worth of
medications in that time, thanks to the generosity of the districts and all those who
participate in our annual fundraiser.
This year’s fundraiser, the Derby for Diabetes, An Auction, and Night at the
Races Event, is scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Youghiogheny Country
Club at 6:00 PM. The Special Guest Auctioneer will be former Pittsburgh
Steelers wide receiver Louis Lipps.
It is sure to be a fun-filled evening for a great cause and we hope that you can be a
part of it! You can still purchase tickets for $25 per person. You can even name a
horse for $10. For tickets please contact the McKeesport Hospital Foundation at
412-664-2590.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I again want to remind everyone that we
still need a qualified candidate for next year’s 2nd Vice District Governor. To be the
2nd Vice District Governor a Lion must have been a Club President and a Zone or
Region Chair. We are also looking for dedicated Lions to be Zone Chairs.

The annual District Spring Party was held Friday, April 28th at the Comfort Inn on Rodi Road in Penn Hills. It was an evening
filled with fellowship, good food, awards, and a time to honor our District Governor for months of dedication and hard work.
Attendees welcomed guest speaker State Council Chair Lion Karen Brady from the Bethlehem Lions Club in District 14K
who talked about membership and leadership.
1. Past International Director Cindy Gregg and her husband PDG Tom were in attendance as guests of DG
Rich Keller. Also attending were Past International Director Carl A. Battistone and his wife Ruth. Special
favors were placed at everyone’s place setting – a small chocolate replica of a three-tier cake with the
“100” at the tip of it, commemorating the Centennial celebration of Lions Clubs International’s 100th
birthday this year. Thank you to both PDGs Mary Jane Keller and Rich for making these favors!
2. A number of Lions were presented with awards as shown in these pictures. Lion Bob Conrad from the
Bloomfield-Lawrenceville Lions Club received the prestigious Pennsylvania Counsellors Distinguished
Service Award for his tireless dedication He’s been a Lion since 1983, served as his club’s President seven
times, served on the District Cabinet in a number of capacities and is still considered as the backbone of
his club. Immediate Past District Governor Joe Donkin had the honor of presenting the award to Lion Bob.
Congratulations to Lion Bob!
3. The members of the White Oak Lions Club surprised Lion Dorothy Kuharski by presenting her with a
Melvin Jones Fellowship for her efforts as not only the Club President for the past two years, but also
serving as a Zone Chair during the same period. Lion Dorothy has demonstrated outstanding leadership
qualities and has “out-done” herself when conducting Zone meetings. She is a tremendous asset to both
her club and to the District.
4. Lion Mary Ann Belles from the Whitehall Community Lions Club was presented with a Presidential
Certificate of Appreciation by DG Keller for her ongoing support of Pittsburgh Mercy’s Operation Safety
Net and her dedication and efforts with the District’s International Peace Poster and Essay contests for the
past several years. Congratulations Lion Mary Ann!
5. State Council Chair Kathy Brady along with DG Rich Keller are shown in one picture presenting both the
District and State awards to Julia Murray for her first-place finish for the Essay Contest in both the District
and State! Congratulations to Julia.
6. State Council Chair Karen Brady delivering the keynote address
7. Two additional International President’s Certificates of Appreciation were presented to 1st Vice District
Governor (PDG) Geoff Temple and to 2nd Vice District Governor Lion Kirby Marchand for stepping
forward to lead 14B through June 2019. Pictures provided by PDG Mary Jane Keller

Continuing with highlighting a member of our club,
this month we are highlighting Lion Carl Bailey.
A member of the McKeesport Lions Club since
November 2004, Carl Bailey has served McKeesport
in many capacities. While serving on the McKeesport
Police force, he became a member of Teamsters Local
205, where he served until joining Local 205 as
Business Agent. While at Teamsters Local 205 he has
worked his way up in the ranks, presently serving as
Secretary-Treasurer/Principal Officer. Lion Carl and
his wife Sherry reside in North Huntingdon and have
two children. While his business demands keep him
from participating in Lions activities as much as he
would like, Carl fully supports the mission of the
McKeesport Lions Club.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall held its annual Hall of Valor induction ceremony and welcomed new
members into its Hall of Valor on Sunday, March 26. This program recognizes Pennsylvania veterans who have received
medals for bravery and heroism during times of military conflict. This year they honored a member of the South Park
Lions Club, Pasquale (Patsy) Papalia, for his gallantry in action during the Vietnam War; he was awarded the Silver Star
for his bravery.
Private First Class Papalia distinguished himself by heroic actions on
February 26, 1967, while serving as a rifleman with Company C, 4th
Battalion, 31st Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam. While on
a search and destroy mission, his platoon came under heavy enemy fire.
During the ensuing fire fight, Private Papalia spotted an enemy
claymore mine which had been set up in the underbrush. With complete
disregard for his own safety, he exposed himself to the heavy enemy
fire, raced to the mine, and successfully
disarmed it by severing the detonating
wire. When he had completed the
disarming of the first mine, he spotted
still another claymore mine further
forward in the field and once again raced
to the second mine where he again
severed the detonating wire.
Through his actions, Private Papalia
opened the way for the rest of his platoon
to advance and rout the enemy from their
positions, Private Papalia’s heroic actions
are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon
himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Patsy later served in the Iraq war and spent a total 28 years in the service of his country in the
US Army. He retired as a Master Sergeant (E-8) and was up for promotion to Sergeant Major.
After leaving the Army, he went to work for the Department of Defense for another 20 years. Submitted by

His goal: to have funding for each child to participant in a free 12 week program which would include their uniforms, equipment and some monetary compensation for the
instructors. At present, the volunteers are teaching at the Holy Family Institute and are charging each child $35. As I said, he really wants to do this free of charge. The DeafBlind

Dear District 14-B Lions Club members,
The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, a/k/a “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive, will take place on Saturday,
May 13, 2017. Once again, Lion Chuck Jarrell from the McKeesport Lions Club (also a retired letter carrier), will be heading
up the effort to procure bags for the food drive. Studies have shown that if given bags to fill, the public is more likely to
donate food to the drive, and donations are often doubled. Last year half a million paper bags were given out to postal patrons
in the Pittsburgh area thanks to donations from companies and organizations, helping increase donations from that in 2015
of 290,000 pounds to that in 2016 to more than 1,000,000 pounds! Please help us to increase that number again this year by
your club donating to help defray the cost of bags. If enough donations are received, the LCI logo will once again appear on
the donation. If your club would like to participate, please contact Lion Chuck Jarrell at [email protected].
Your logo or name will be included on these bags with your contribution. Last year we used 103,000 bags, but have an are of
830,000 possible deliveries. Also, we would like you to help pick up or move food that is collected on May 13th. Helpers are
very important on food drive days. You feel good when you see mountains of food collected. Find more information on the letter
carrier food drive by going to www.nacl.org/food and on YouTube by going to NACL Food Drive.
Please consider donating so that others may receive the healthy foods that they need. Too many children go to bed hungry every
night. Feel free to contact me at (412)818-1473 or [email protected] whith any questions.
Sincerely,
Chuck Jarrell Western Pennsylvania Area NALC Food Drive Coordinator
PS: In 2011, the National Association of Letter Carriers National Food drive collected 77.1 million pounds of food that set a new
Guinness World Record for the most food collected in one day!

The Mon River Fleet Lions participated in a
multi-community clean-up event on Saturday,
April 1. The function was coordinated by the
Braddock Economic Development Corporation
(BEDCO) and the Braddock SHIP (State

Fleet Lions Club is aligned with the SHIPs from
Braddock, Clairton, Duquesne and
McKeesport. Students from both Pitt and Penn
State helped, along with local residents and
members of AmeriCorps. Local businesses
supported the effort by providing materials and
discounting their wares for the workers. Much
was accomplished and it was gratifying to give
