MICAH McKINNIS
Micah McKinnis is a seventeen year-old home-educated student, currently under the piano instruction of Svetlana Velichko. Born in Kodiak, Alaska, he began playing piano at the age of seven, but only recently entered the realm of competitive piano performance. In early 2010, after only a year and a half of study under his current teacher, he won the state MTNA Senior Duet Competition, going on to win second at the Regional Division. On March 19th, while he was preparing for his upcoming competition, his house burned completely to the ground. Although all inside escaped to safety, he lost all three pianos that were in the home. However, thanks to the help of his friends and teacher, he was able to maintain his practice schedule. Less than two months after the disaster, he won first prize in the Senior Division of the annual Alaska state Piano Competition. Locally, he has appeared at many solo and duet recitals. Apart from private lessons, he attends several classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage. As a lifelong Alaskan, he enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and playing competitive games of ultimate Frisbee in the magnificent outdoors. In his spare time, he works to hone his skills as a gymnast and as a gymnastics coach. He plans to con-tinue his pre-college musical studies under the tutelage of Svetlana Velichko.
