C HANGE THE WORLD We have had a couple close calls with COVID lately. One of the people at the pantry last month tested positive several days after the last gathering. No one did anything wrong but people weren’t masked either. I got really sick several weeks ago. I had almost every COVID symptom, but both my tests were nega- tive, and I was grateful. I am a pretty rigorous mask wearer, but I had been in contact with a lot of people. The truth is, that as careful as we are, as much as we clean, as current as we try to stay with what is happening in the world, I can’t keep you safe. It’s up to you to wear a mask. It’s up to you to socially distance. It is up to you to stay home if you don’t feel well. It’s up to you to get vaccinated. If you are not coming to church be- cause you are concerned about getting sick, it is OK! That’s why we continue to have the service online. We want you to From The Rector take really good care of yourself and never do anything that frightens you. Being a part of a community means that we pray for each other, we do our best to keep each other safe, we make the best decisions we can to keep others healthy as well as ourselves. We are not done with COVID yet. Let’s support one another’s choices for safety and health! ~~~~~~~~~ Unsung Hero This month we thank Doug who started with the parish through our EfM group. He has be- come a regular in all of our outreach programs and recently took on part of the administration in managing our food pantry. Doug also helps with recording the 10:30 am service. But the best that Doug offers is being available for any- thing that needs to be done. We are so grateful he is at St. John’s. Please thank Doug for all he does the next time you see him! We so appreciate your patience, flexibility and cooperation as we plan for fall. It seems as though we are in a constant state of waiting as we watch reports on the advance of the virus throughout our Mahoning Valley. So many of our minis- tries and plans are contingent on the movement of this virus. Please pray. Please watch for weekly updates distributed through our Constant Contact email and our website: www.stjohnohio.org. For the time being, we will plan and go forward with caution and preventive measures, including masks and social distancing. Thank you!

CHRISTIAN SOCIAL RELATIONS

Greetings! I hope everyone had a relaxing summer! It went so fast! Gayle and I attended a meeting at Taft Elementary School, on Tuesday, August 17th. Williamson has become a middle school, and we wanted to continue supporting the elementary school children. The principal and staff were very receptive to provision of a mobile food pantry, books for the children at Christmastime, socks and underwear for the students, and cele-brating a student and staff member of the month.

I was so proud to represent St. John’s Church, and how we are able to impact a positive change through our giving. Thank you for all you do.

~ Sue

We will provide lunches on the 1st and 2nd Saturday of each month. Our first Upward Bound lunch is on Saturday, October 2nd. Let Gayle+ know if you are interested. The Upward Bound program is a Saturday enrichment program for college bound high school students. When the program began they found the students couldn’t concentrate because they were hungry. This is an area where we could help!! We will prepare lunch for approximately 35 kids and adults in the Great Hall. We need volunteers to cook, serve and clean. Thank you!!

William H. Taft Mobile Pantry

St. John’s will partner with William H. Taft Elementary School located at 730 E. Avondale Avenue in Youngstown beginning this month, as Williamson Elementary is no longer an elementary school. We look forward to providing a monthly mobile pantry, student incentives and other items to Taft Elementary to foster an engaged relationship with our community. If you are available on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, we need you. We will need to unpack and organize the food for

families to take home. We are also giving away manual can openers to every family. Each month people are provided numerous canned foods and a can opener is essential. If you are available this month on Tuesday, October19th, let Gayle+ know. We will meet at the church at 2:30 pm and drive over. Thank you!! We will resume hosting a monthly lunch to celebrate Taft Elementary “Student of the Month”. Each class will choose a student to participate. St. John’s will bring pizza and treats for the honorees to let them know their hard work matters! Please begin now to collect new and very slightly used children’s books for all the students at Taft Elementary School (grades K-5). With the assistance of 1st Presbyterian, we hope to provide each student with 2-3 books to take home as a holiday gift. Shouldn’t every child have books at home? Help us by starting now. Ask your clubs, your neighbors, and your family members to pick up a book or two for children of all abilities. Thank you!!

Casting for the January 9, 2022 performance of the 60th Annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival will begin soon. We need to fill performance parts, as well as openings behind the scenes. There are parts for children, teens and adults! Please contact Cindy in the Church Office at 330-743-3175 or at [email protected]. We will offer two performances with limited seating capacity and NO MEAL this year. Tickets for performance only (the banquet meal will be eliminated this year) will be available in November.

Due to the recent spike in COVID activity we are asking that everyone wear a mask at church and other gatherings. We will have baptisms continue in the next weeks and the children are obviously unvaccinated. We also have people at risk or who are in contact with people at risk coming to services, as well as some people who are unvaccinated. We make this small sacrifice to care for our brothers and sis-ters, to be a community of hospitality, and to live God’s call to love with our actions and not just with our words. We always try to be an obvious sign of God’s love, and this is how our times demand we show it. Thank you.
