TAX TIPS

byJUDI STRAUSS, E.A.

could be important deductions for 2014. Since ourout-of-pocked medical costs keep rising (and ourincomes are less due to lower interest rates), youshould check your expenses, including:

• Medicare insurance and the drug premium• Insurance premiums - paid by you (after, not

pretax) or deducted from your pension andCobra costs

• Non reimbursed medical and especiallydental costs

• prescription drugs• hearing aids and batteries• medical mileage @ 23.5 cents/mile• long-term care insurance

While medical expenses are only deductible over7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income - now over10% if under age 65 - many taxpayers are itemizingthis year since their medical costs plus real estatetaxes, contributions and sales tax deduction add upto more than their standard deduction.STRAUSS TAX SERVICE can check yourmedical expenses. ADOLESCENT VS. ELDERLYDENTAL PROBLEMS

Q: Do dental issues get better or worse as youget older?A: Every stage of life has its challenges andopportunities. That applies to dental issues aswell. Dental health doesn’t necessarily get worseas you age, particularly if you have been attentiveto your teeth all your life. Adolescents, forinstance, have to deal with gingivitis, the guminflammation that some researchers think is aby-product of hormonal change at puberty orthe result of a typical teenage diet and poor oralhygiene. They may also deal with appliances theirparents opt for to straighten their teeth. The elderly, on the other hand, deal with changeslike receding gums, a condition that leaves thecementum that covers each tooth’s root exposed.Hence the saying, “long in the tooth” for aperson who is aging. The exposed part of thetooth is susceptible to decay and to abrasionfrom brushing. Older adults who have notconsistently practiced optimal oral hygiene couldalso be dealing with the problem of lost teeth. Inaddition, seniors are also prone to a potentiallyserious problem with wrinkling around themouth, a condition that stems from skin thatdoes not contain as much water and fat as ayounger person’s does.Every age presents its challenges when it comes tooral health. The best way to be prepared for thesechallenges is to visit your dentist regularly andpractice good oral hygiene all through your life.

St. Mary’s of Gostyn Holds A SuccessfulInternational Fair TradeMarket

By Denise Freese

Generous, thoughtful people are al-ways looking for ways to help others. Vol-unteering, giving personal donations, andfundraising are ways to make a differencein the lives of the less fortunate. Shoppingfor “Fair Trade” products is another won-derful way that consumers can help peo-ple in other countries who exist under direcircumstances and have little chance forimproving their lives. Fair Trade, accordingto www.fairtradeusa.org, is a global trademodel that includes certification so shop-pers can quickly identify products thatwere produced in an ethical manner. For consumers, it’s a powerful way to

reduce poverty through everyday shop-ping; for farmers and workers in develop-ing countries, it offers better prices, im-proved terms of trade, and the businessskills necessary to create high-qualityproducts that can compete in the globalmarketplace, according to the website.Fair Trade allows farmers and workersto improve their lives and plan for their

futures; they can provide their familieswith medicine, shoes, clothing, books forschool, and other necessities.Today, Fair Trade benefits more than

1.2 million farming families in 70 devel-oping countries. St. Mary’s of Gostyn heldan International Fair Trade Market onDecember 13 and 14, 2014. The commu-nity shopped for gifts created by disad-vantaged farmers and artisans from morethan 20 countries, including Guatemala,Peru, Ecuador, Kenya, India and Pakistan.Available items included alpaca gloves andhats, tree ornaments, mouth-watering fairtrade coffee, tea and chocolate, along withmusical instruments, puzzle boxes, games, toys, jewelry, nativity scenes, and decora-tive wall hangings made from unique andrecycled items. St. Mary’s raised approxi-mately $13,800 to help these farmers andartisans; buying Fair Trade products alsoprovides fair prices and credit, fair laborconditions, direct trade, and environmen-tal sustainability. For more information about purchasing

Presentation dates set for stormwater sales tax referendumSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

WESTMONT – Village residentswill have multiple opportunities tolearn more about Westmont’s upcom-ing referendum after dates were re-cently announced for several commu-nity presentations on the matter.

“We want to make sure that votersare well-informed regarding this im-portant topic,” Westmont Communi-cations Director Larry McIntyre in avillage news release said. “The villagecan neither advocate for nor againstthis referendum, so it is imperativethat we do our best to provide factualinformation for our citizens to consid-er.”

The village board opted last monthto pursue a ½ percent sales tax increaseto fund stormwater management andinfrastructure improvements. Voterswill weigh in on the measure April 7.The referendum requires a majorityvote to pass.

The cost of pursuing necessarystormwater projects in Westmont is es-timated at $30 million. If approved, thetax hike would generate about $600,000in revenue annually.

Efforts to establish a long-term fund-ing source for stormwater relief wereinitiated after the April 2013 floods.

Should the tax be implemented, fu-ture village boards will not be able toredirect money received from it or in-crease its percentage rate, according tothe release.

“It is important to make clear that ifa new revenue stream is not identifiedand dedicated for stormwater man-agement and infrastructure improve-ments, then the growing flood issuesthat we have seen over the past decadecannot be addressed in the way wewould like,” Trustee and stormwatercommittee Chairman Steve Nero saidin the release.

Westmont’s current sales tax is7.25 percent for most retail stores and8.75 percent for most places of eating. The sales tax in neighboring commu-

nities varies, and includes 7.25 per-cent in Clarendon Hills, 8.25 percentin Downers Grove and 9.25 percent inHinsdale.

“For more than a year, the villagehas been working on this initiative, and after considering all of the options,it was decided that this modest salestax increase would be the best way toaddress this problem while havingminimal financial impact on our citi-zens,” said trustee Jim Addington inthe release.

The village already has conductedreferendum presentations for Maerck-er School District 60, the Westmont Li-ons Club and the Downtown WestmontBusiness Alliance, and will continue toarrange for more information sessions

as interest is shown. A digital copy ofthe presentation also is available forpublic viewing on the village websiteat www.westmont.illinois.gov.

Wheth-er a reader agreed with the view ornot, there is great value in having topicalissues vigorously debated in the publicwithin the community. Please do continue to print your policy

on important matters like the COD boarddecisions. DuPage is not Cook County.Fishing for taxpayer money based ondubious rationales for the funding wasegregiously amplified by the board bothawarding the $760,000 “handshake” deal(contractually bound or not) and thennaming the “teaching and learning cen-ter” after Breuder. As the view concluded“these payouts for failure have to stop.”

Illinois Senate Democrats an-nounced the formation of a new sub-committee to investigate executivecompensation at public institutions ina news release Feb. 11.

The announcementcomes in the wake of thefallout following the ap-proval of a massive sev-erance package for Col-lege of DuPage PresidentRobert Breuder.

The subcommitteewill be part of the SenateHigher Education Committee and willsteer reform efforts and ensure tuitionand tax dollars are used responsibly.

It will have three members: BillCunningham, D-Chicago; Dan Kotows-ki, D-Park Ridge; and a Republicanwho has yet to be selected, accordingto John Patterson, director of commu-nications for the Illinois Senate Dem-ocrats.

“Taxpayers are demanding to knowhow we compensate administrators, why we are compensating them andwhat safeguards we can put in place toend the type of abuses we’ve recentlyseen,” Cunningham, who will head thesubcommittee, said in the release.

The issue was thrust into the spot-light when the College of DuPageBoard of Trustees voted 6-1 to approvea $762,000 buyout for Breuder, who willretire March 31, 2016 – three years ear-lier than anticipated. The college willalso name its new Homeland SecurityEducation Center after him.

The vote drew outrage from thepublic, as 400 people attended a boardmeeting in January about the sever-ance package.

Board Chairwoman Erin Birt saidat the meeting the board quantified 1.5years of Breuder’s salary and benefitswhen coming to the agreement.

“This money could be better spenton providing an affordable, world-class-college education for students. It couldbe used to offer much needed tuitionrelief for families,” said Kotowski inthe release. “Taxpayers cannot affordto pay for six-figure golden parachutes, shooting club memberships and otherlavish perks for public servants.”

Rauner orders consolidation task forceBy NATHAN LURZ

[email protected]

Government consolidation, DuPagestyle, may be coming to counties acrossthe state.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed ExecutiveOrder 15-15 to form the new Local Gov-ernment Consolidation and UnfundedMandate Task Force headed by Wheatonresident and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinet-ti during a news conference Friday atthe DuPage Water Commission in Elm-hurst.

Rauner called it an “exciting step to-wards turning our state around.”

“We need to encourage the streamlin-ing of local governments and of schooldistricts to reduce costs and be goodstewards of taxpayer dollars,” he said.“The [task force] will get the conversa-tion started on how to streamline [and]end duplicative services and improveefficiency.”

Rauner previously praised consolida-tion efforts in DuPage, most notably inhis State of the State address Feb. 4.

DuPage County Board ChairmanDan Cronin, who said he will play a lead-ership role in the task force, spoke at thepress conference, calling DuPage a lab-oratory for consolidation. The county

projects more than $100 million in sav-ings from its Accountability, Consolida-tion and Transparency Initiative, whichCronin started in 2010.

While Cronin said the county’s ap-

proach to consolidation isn’t one size fitsall, he believes its principles could betransferred statewide.

“Imagine the savings if we could re-peat that success story in 100 other coun-

ties throughout Illinois,” Cronin said.Rauner said the government con-

traction would have to come without

The drumbeat for some kind of intervention in the Robert

Breuder retirement package continues unabated. State Rep.

Peter Breen, R-Lombard, introduced a plan to ban big severance

packages like the $763,000 one Breuder is to receive. State Rep.

Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has demanded an audit of College of

DuPage’s finances. The silence from Breuder and the College of

DuPage board in the face of this ongoing criticism is deafening.

Salt Creek Ballet celebrates3 decades of dance

SPONSORED BY

By Gina Kraman

What started as a few ballet stu-dents pirouetting on a worn gymnasiumfloor in LaGrange, has blossomed intoa nationally acclaimed dance company, with hundreds of students perfectingtheir moves at a state-of-the art facilityin Westmont.

Salt Creek Ballet (SCB) celebrates its30th anniversary this year, and contin-ues it’s two-part mission: to train stu-dents, and to give dancers high-levelopportunities to perform. Founder Patri-cia Sigurdson had taught Chicago-areastudents following her training at theRoyal Ballet School in London, and inNew York with famed choreographersFrederick Franklin and Robert Joffrey. She also danced professionally with theAmerican Ballet Theater. However shewas compelled to bring her talents andclasses to the western suburbs.

Sigurdson began teaching students inLaGrange, and soon wanted to provide aprofessional-level performance experi-ence. She felt that the western suburbswould benefit from and support a qual-ity, classically trained dance company.

After generating support and funding,Sigurdson established SCB in 1985.

Teacher Susanne Carroll Wren, withSCB for more than 37 years (even beforeit was officially established), recalls theearly facility, which “consisted of onelarge studio, and one small one. We soonoutgrew that, and developed the fourstudios we have today.”

The staff grew also, adding employ-ees including Christina Salerno, whohad danced with the company, andnow serves as SCB’s executive director. When Sigurdson retired in 1998, Russiandancers Sergey Kozadayev and ZhannaDubrovskaya became artistic directors. This husband and wife team contributetheir classical and contemporary balletexpertise honed on the internationalstage.

Three decades of dancers have tak-en classes and performed at SCB, whichis known for its elaborate productions, including the annual holiday classic,“The Nutcracker.” SCB has embellished“The Nutcracker” performances, and thecompany now owns and recently updat-ed the set and costumes. Wren recallshow SCB previously rented sets andwardrobe, and even borrowed dancers,to perform in the early years.

SOUND OFFSnow removal past Cass Avenue

Westmont snow removal wasn’tthat much better than Downers Grove. They spend most of their time going upand down Cass Avenue in downtownWestmont. Sure, Cass Avenue is cleardown to the pavement. But drive downthe side streets a day or two after thesnowstorm. You’re lucky if the plow wentthrough once. I know people who live onthe south side of town and whose streetswere not plowed for a couple of days.Don’t give Westmont that much creditunless you only drive through downtownWestmont on Cass Avenue.

Adults let children ofJackie Robinson West down

What happened to the children of JackieRobinson West is shameful. Those childrenplayed their best. They did everything theywere supposed to do. The adults let themdown! I hope those coaches are bannedfrom ever coaching again. To them, it wasmore important to win than show theboys that honesty and integrity are whatcounts. Imagine the hurt the coaches havecaused these boys. I just hope the boyscan see this for what it is and not let itdestroy their hopes and dreams.

Too much focus on pollsOur political campaigns have become

too expensive and much too long. Thereis some value for the voter in the tele-vised debates. At least we can learn whatpositions the candidates have on certainissues. But the TV media does focustoo much on polls and pollsters. It canalways find a poll somewhere that willsupport its agenda, and then it becomesthe news. Is everyone watching?

U.S. needs to take action againstterrorists groups in Middle East

The murder of American hostages byMuslim extremists is terrible. How doesthe U.S.A. stop this? First, imagine howa President Roosevelt, Eisenhower orReagan might have responded to suchmurders. Immediate carpet bombingof manufacturing centers and terroristenclaves is a good guess. With today’stechnology, enhanced security and pin-point retaliatory capability, a terroristgroup would be certain of self-destruc-tion, ordered by presidents who caredmore about the safety of Americancitizens than political correctness.

Where’s the religious tolerance? Why do people feel compelled to den-

igrate other religions and then wonderwhy there are consequences to their

actions? Freedom of speech means you“can,” but does it mean you “should”?Where is the humor in mocking anyreligion, whether it be through polit-ical cartoons comparing Mohammedto a dog, “Saturday Night Live”-typeprograms making fun of Muslims andChristians, so-called “artistic” displaysplacing Christ immersed in urine, protest-ers making a mockery of religious ritesfor fallen servicemen at cemeteries, etc.?Wouldn’t the world be a better place ifall of us recognized how sacred eachindividual religion is to the followers ofthat religion?

Start COD building name petitionI just read the article from the person

who suggested that the HomelandSecurity Education Center at [College ofDuPage] be named after Sgt. Robert Mill-er, who was a Medal of Honor recipient, instead of the outgoing president. I wishthat person would initiate a petition andget publicity on that. He or she shouldcall back in and tell people where to goto sign this petition. It’s a worthy reasonto change the name.

‘Uneggspected’ differenceOnce in a while, I treat myself to an

Egg McMuffin on my way to work in themorning. I pass a McDonald’s on MapleAvenue in Lisle and the new one on Og-den Avenue in Downers Grove. How is itthat Lisle charges $2.99, while DownersGrove charges $3.45 for the same item? This is a 46 cents difference. So, if youneed an Egg McMuffin in the morning, Irecommend you shop in Lisle.

Music comforts DuPage Convalescent residentsBy NATHAN LURZ

Sometimes a song can make a worldof difference.Residents of the DuPage County Con-

valescent Center get serenaded by songsranging from “Bicycle Built for Two” to“Count on Me” by Bruno Mars by thecenter’music therapist, BrendaBuchan-an.Buchanan said she was driven into

the field after seeing the joy it broughther mother when she was hospitalizedseveral years ago.She has spent two hours with a wide

variety of residents – including some ofits lowest-functioning adults – Alzhei-mer’s patients and those with Parkin-son’s – each Thursday and Friday sinceshe was hired in September 2014.The longtime church organist and

Schaumburg resident approaches eachresident with the same enthusiasm asthe last, trying to engage each of thempersonally. For those who can, she fillshands with maracas, drums and othernoisemakers.Formanywho can’t, she goes around

to each individual, dances with them, sings their favorite songs, asks themquestions and tries to give themasmuch

sensory stimulation as possible. The positive impact on patient

well-being, she said, is backed by re-search.Music therapy has been found tohelp awide variety of conditions, includ-ing dementia, Alzheimer’s, autism andmore, according to the American Music

Therapy Association.“Music is good for so many things,”

Buchanan said. “Music can be used as asocial way of engaging, [it can] alleviatepain.”Buchanan was brought on board

by the center’s recreation department

thanks to funding from the DuPage Con-valescentCenter Foundation, said LindaLinford, foundation coordinator. The foundation is dedicated to in-

creasing quality of life in the center, andwhen 80 percent of the residents receivesome kind of public aid, entertainmentthrough the center is sometimes the onlykindmany get.“I talk to the medical aides upstairs

who said the gentlemen on their floorcompletely change after she is withthem,” she said. “Their whole body isimpacted, they have more energy, theyfeel better.”Many of those sheworkswith remain

unresponsive during her performances, but Buchanan said she doesn’t mind.“The times I do get them to smile

or respond are sometimes even betterthan the ones who do it all the time,”she said. “I like the challenge of figur-ing out what can help them enjoy lifefor a little bit.”

Several local representativesare looking at legislation regardingBreuder’s buyout and others want toprevent similar severance packagesin the future.

Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, filedtwo resolutions related to the buyout. The first is a request for the IllinoisAuditor General to perform an auditof the college’s state funding from thepast three fiscal years. After Ives’ re-quest, the college asked the auditorgeneral to move forward with the au-dit prior to receiving legislative ap-proval.

Ives also is sponsoring a resolu-tion urging trustees to reconsiderthe buyout and the building nam-ing. At the January meeting, severalmembers of the public expressed aninterest in naming the building afterStaff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Wheatonnative awarded the Medal of Honorafter dying in combat in Afghani-stan.

Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, an-nounced earlier this month he wouldintroduce legislation known as theBreuder Rule, which would ban ex-cessive severance packages at publicinstitutions.

At a House Republicans newsconference after the buyout was ap-

proved, Rep. Ron Sandack, R-DownersGrove, announced he would pursuelegislation banning the use of statemoney in such severance packages.

At the news conference, legislatorsalso announced other possible lawsincluding cuts in state funding for thecollege and reductions in the lengthof board trustees’ terms, which arecurrently six years.

When reached for comment, col-lege spokesman Joe Moore declined.

compromising the important serviceslocal districts provide.

The governor’s order comes daysbefore he presents his budget proposalto the General Assembly in the face ofmassive debt and revenue problems.

He said cutting spending would onlyplayapart inhis efforts to reformIllinois.

“As I’ve said, we need to grow ourway out of our problems,” he said. “Wecan’t just cut our way out of our prob-lems. Purely cutting alone withoutstructural, pro-growth reform won’tget us there.”

Sanguinetti said the governorwould appoint 15 representatives fromacross the state to the task force inthe next month. The group will lead astudy to determine which agencies andunfunded mandates to recommend thegovernor examine.

The task force will be required tosubmit its findings to the governor andthe General Assembly by Dec. 31, 2015,at which time it will be dissolved, ac-cording to a news release from the gov-ernor’s office.

Illinois averages nearly 54 units oflocal government per 100,000 residents,Sanguinetti said.

She said too many layers of lo-cal government aids corruption andheightens taxes.

Consolidation efforts will be a bigpart of the future of Illinois, accordingto Sanguinetti.

“Every dollar we save is a dollarthat goes back into the pocketbooks ofour taxpayers,” she said.

Casper, Sentinels rally past Lisle in regional semisBy ALEX SOULIER

[email protected]

AURORA – Westmont leading scor-er Mara Casper delivered with the sea-son on the line in the Class 2A regionalsemifinal game against Lisle on Feb.11.

With less than 25 seconds left in thefourth quarter and the score knotted at40, the four-year varsity player cameoff a double screen and received anAnnie Carlson pass, drilling a 3 frombetween the left baseline and top of thekey and powering Westmont to 43-40victory against the rival Lions.

“That’s my favorite spot on thecourt to shoot from,” Casper said ofthe game-winner. “I was excited thescreen worked; we ran that play beforeagainst Lisle and it didn’t work.”

Head coach Mike McCord initiallydrew up a different play during thepreceding timeout but then called anaudible right before the game resumed.

“I called a different play, but just allof a sudden I thought, ‘no, let’s do thisone,’” McCord said. “If we would haverun what we were initially supposedto run, she would have gotten the ballon this side [the right side of the bas-ket]. For some reason I thought thatwe might get a better shot if we doublescreen down on the other side.”

The third-seeded Sentinels had tobattle back in the final quarter to pullwithin striking distance of the sec-ond-seeded Lions.

Westmont led a majority of the firstand second quarters, maintaining a23-18 halftime advantage before Lisle’sKate Twaddle and Sarah Mogensenscored the first four points of the sec-ond half

When Lions freshman point guardNatalie Takahashi converted a four-point play to give the Lisle a 30-27 leadat 4:43 of the third quarter, it looked asif the No. 2 seed might run away withthe win.

But Westmont junior Amanda Pretekept the Sentinels within strikingdistance by draining back-to-back 3sfrom the right side of the arc to cut thedeficit to 35-33 at the end of the thirdquarter.

“My first reaction was, ‘Oh my goshI can’t believe that just happened,’”Prete said of the two 3-pointers. “Youcan’t think too long about it. Some-times if you have an open look, you justhave to give it your best shot.”

The Lions held onto the lead for thefirst five minutes of the of the fourthquarter until Casper chased down amissed free throw by Carlson, swung

the ball around the perimeter, findingPrete for a game-tying 3-pointer.

“We never get too down and we pickourselves up and are always playingfor each other,” Prete said.

Lisle briefly took a 40-38 lead withless than two minutes to play, but Syd-ney Pardy converted from inside to tie

the game at 40. Following Casper’s go-ahead 3 in the final minute, the Lionshad a good look at a game-tying 3 butcould not convert.

The Sentinels’ victory avenges aconference loss to Lisle in which West-mont was held scoreless for the firstnine minutes.

“The last time we played Lisle, wegot crushed, especially the first half,”Casper said. “[Tonight’s win] was re-ally exciting. We were super focusedand we really wanted to win. I think itshowed out there that we really wantedto beat them.”

Casper led all scorers with 14 pointswhile Prete also scored in double fig-ures with 11 points.

The Sentinels could not keep themomentum going in the regional final, losing to top-seeded Aurora Christian45-33. Casper scored a game-high 17points against the regional hosts andCarlson added 10 points.

Downers Grove North gymnastics duo prepares for state runBy MATT LE CREN

[email protected]

HINSDALE – DownersGrove North gymnast ElliaLeger had to wait a long timeto perform her uneven barsroutine Feb. 11 at the HinsdaleCentral sectional.

But the patience paid offas Leger ended an even lon-ger wait – her school’s 10-yeardrought between state quali-fiers.

The senior was the last com-petitor on bars and she rockedher set for a 9.35 score, goodenough for fourth place andan automatic berth at the statemeet at Palatine High School.

Leger’s bars routine com-pleted her sectional meet andalso allowed her to advance tostate in the all-around compe-tition. Her 36.775 was good forfifth place.

“I’m just really excited thatall my hard work that I’ve

[put] in the past year has paidoff,” Leger said. “I was actual-ly really, really anxious beforeI was going [on bars] because

I knew what I had to get andwhat I had to do. I just reallywanted to go out there and dothe best routine that I could.”

Leger, who also qualifiedon balance beamwith a fourth-place score of 9.15, is the firstDowners North gymnast toqualify for state since KathyZeles and Maggie Bronnywent in 2005. Leger is North’sfirst all-around qualifier sinceKrista Lewis and Casey Pankoin 2003.

“I was hoping for bars andI wasn’t really expecting tomake beam and all-around,”Leger said. “I just couldn’t bemore excited and happy.”

Downers Grove South soph-omore Kayla Carlson was in asimilar mood after qualifyingfor the first time. She stuckher Yurchenko vault for a ca-reer-high 9.45, good enough forfifthand the final automaticbid.

“I’m really excited to go andnever thought I’d be able to doit,” Carlson said. “But I lis-tened to my coaches. They’vebeen telling me I could do it allyear.”

Carlson achieved tremen-dous height on the Yurchenko, the toughest vault being doneat the high school level, andknew right away she was go-ing to stick it.

“I’ve seen videos [of it] andstill can’t believe it,” said Carl-son, who earned an at-largestate berth in the all-around,where she finished eighthwith36.25, and beam. “I could feel itwhile I was doing it I knew itwas a good one and I was justhappy with that.”

Downers Grove North, which was making its firstsectional appearance since2005, finished fifth in the teamstandings with 138.075 points, while Downers Grove Southbrought up the rear of the six-team field with 136.95.

“I have a lot of young kidson the team,” Downers Northcoach Linda Reynolds said.“We’re really excited about thefuture.”

Kedrowski excels with newDownersGroveNorth teamBy ALEX SOULIER

[email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – Jor-don Kedrowski has takenhis game to another level inhis only season on DownersGrove North boys basketballteam.

The senior, who trans-ferred from Neuqua Valley toDGN at the start of the schoolyear, quickly established him-self as the Trojans’ most con-sistent scorer, and through19 games he leads the teamin points per game (12.4) and3-pointers (109).

Additionally, the 6-foot-2guard is the team’s primaryball handler and has maturedinto an offensive catalyst, leading area teams with a 5.7assist-per-game average.

“The transition has gonepretty smooth, and it’s helpedthat the coaches implementeda new offense this season, sothe rest of the team was learn-ing a new system as well,”Kedrowski said. “We came inand had a lot great practicesto start the season. I credit myteammates for that, they werea huge help.”

Kedrowski also attributeshis success to the DownersGrove North coaching staff,

especially head coach JimThomas, whose tough loveapproach has helped him ma-ture as a player and a person.

“He’s hard on me, he getson me a lot in practice,”Kedrowski said. “But I thinkit’s because he sees poten-tial in me; he knows I wantto play at the next level andhe just wants me at my beston every single play. He’s afantastic coach, I’ve learnedso much from him that goesbeyond basketball.”

Thomas ’ t u t e l a g e o fKedrowski goes back fartherthan this basketball season. The coach first took Kedrows-ki under his wing when theguard joined his MercuryElite AAU team this pastspring.

“We had some really niceplayers on that team, andKedrowski was the pointguard that set up the offenseand distributed the basket-ball,” Thomas said. “So he’sreally taken on a new rolewith this team [DownersGrove North]. He’s still agreat passer, but he’s shownthat he’s an effective scorer, too.”

Like Thomas, who playedguard for Augustana College,Kedrowski hopes to contin-

ue his basketball career afterhigh school. He is currentlytalking to coaches at the Divi-sion-I, DII and DIII level, butwill not make a decision if andwhere he will play college bas-ketball until after the season.

“I don’t want to make itabout me, it’s about the teamat this point,” Kedrowski said.“We are focused on getting asfar as we can in the playoffsthis year, then after I will fig-ure it out.”

The Trojans could not beatYork for a second time thisseason, falling to the Dukes63-49 on Thursday. Kedrows-ki led the way with 15 pointswhile Colin Kramper chippedin 11.

DGN goes on the road toface Oak Park River Forest at7:30 p.m. Friday before squar-ing off against Nazareth Acad-emy at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Lauren Porcelli has apenchant for breaking downopposing defenses and gettingto the basket. The Trojanguard’s dribble penetrationskills were on full displayMonday in the first round ofthe Class 4A playoffs againstPlainfield Central, as shescored 15 points and went6-for-9 from the free throwline. Porcelli, the Sears Hard-ware & Appliance Athlete ofthe Week spoke with Subur-ban Life Sports Editor AlexSoulier about the win.

Soulier: What happened inthe fourth quarter that enabledthe team to engineer a 18-0 run?

Porcelli: I think that webrought a lot of energy andstarted to play really well asa unit. We have been talkingabout moving as a unit andeveryone moving together in-stead of everyone doing their

own thing. I thought at thebeginning of the quarter westarted moving and workingtogether.

Soulier: You held them toless than 10 points in all but onequarter. How important is it toset the tone on defense?

Porcelli: I think that’smore important than offensebecause you can’t win a gamewithout defensive stops. Theoffense will come as we workour butts off on defense.

Soulier: How has the offensechanged without Jaida Green inthe lineup?

Porcelli: For me, I am justdoing my best to breakdowndefenses by dribbling andgetting to the hoop. As a team,we have been doing a good jobof moving the ball and gettingscoring contributions fromthroughout the lineup.
