A DETECTIVE tries to gure out how & why peopledo things (usually crimes) by watching them & by asking

other people about them & sometimes by shadowing(following) them. This is called Investigation.

Sometimes detectives hunt down criminals. Other timesthey are hired to protect deliveries of gold and other

valuable shipments on trains and stagecoaches.

A POLICE DETECTIVE works for the police.

A PRIVATE EYE or PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR is a non-Police Detective who is privately hired by a person

or group of people. Private Eyes usually engage in smallinvestigations. The Pinkerton Detective Agency in Chicagoemploys lots of Private Eyes. For example, a woman might

hire a private eye to shadow her husband & nd out if he is going to saloons & gambling away his salary.

I want to be the best detective I can be, so I askedthe Marshal of Virginia City, a famous gambler

called Poker Face Jace and some other people for advice. After listening to them, I made a list of ten things

you have to do to be a Good Detective. Here is my list.

Look at everything around you.Let your eyes go soft & try to see it all together.

Try to get a feel for the place and the generalatmosphere. See if anything looks out of place.

Also take note of where the exits are, so you can make

    a quick escape if necessary.

You also need to search out good hiding places, and remember they arent always where you thinkthey are. I am very good at sneaking, like when I

had to climb under Belle Donnes big, hoop skirt asWhittlin Walt (see page 5) and his two pards

rode past. It was like being in a pink tent.

    Look at people standing or

SITTING ON T EIR O N.Are they doing something? Or just loitering?

Do they look relaxed or nervous? HINT: To get an ideaof what a person is feeling, physically imitate their

    pose or posture.

Dont trust anyone, especially here in Virginia Cityas a lot of people drink liquor and everybody carriesa gun. Virginia City is full of gamblers, hurdy girls,

saloon-keepers and gunmen, all of them on the make.Pa Emmet used to call it Satans Playground

and said it was the vilest place on earth, even worse than San Francisco.

So you need to get your bearings real quick.

Look at people in GRO PS. How close are they sitting or standing together?

Are their feet pointing towards each other or angledaway? Do they touch each other? Are they looking

into each others eyes a little, a lot or not at all?

NEVER FORGET T E FEET.A mans face is in fact the most dishonest part of the

body and the most honest part is his feet because weare not always aware of what they are doing.

And when people drink wine or spirits, theyexaggerate their movements and voices. Their bodiesreveal their true feelings and sometimes they even say

    what they really think.

    Train yourself to remember

    distinctive details about people

so you can recognize them again. Most people look at eyes, nose and mouth, but dont

forget chin, forehead and teeth. Ears can be verydistinctive, too. For example, I have a at,

squarish earlobe and a smooth upper whorl. (The lobeis the part ladies pierce for earrings and the whorl

is the swirly bit around the ear hole.)

Also look at peoples pro les. If they are not wearing

a slouch hat, like the one Im wearing here, try to seethe shape of their whole head. Indians and Celestialscan be dif cult to distinguish. That is why it is good

to look at peoples ears, as well as their faces.

    Listen to all the sounds

around you.Listen to any people you can hear, but listen more totheir tone of voice than the words they say. People do

not always say what they mean.

    Try to guess peoples

height and weight and age. This is hard at rst but you can practise on peopleyou know. (Get their permission rst, before you

announce how old you think they are and howmuch they weigh.)

Sometimes you can tell a persons job by theirclothing. But dont be fooled because all the best

detectives get In Disguise. Like when I was dressedas a girl. It was time-consuming and tedious,

but when I nally tied the ribbon of the bonnet undermy chin I judged it was worth it. I doubt if even

my ma would have recognised me!

It is real hard to tell for

certain if someone is lying. But you can usually tell if they are Nervous or Upset.

Men sometimes sweat & swallow. Women cover the

base of their throat. Some people have a Tell,an unconscious thing they do when they are lying.I knew one desperado who used to stop chewing his

tobacco whenever he was lying or bluf ng.Other people have a Nervous Tic where little muscles usually on their face twitch when they are lying.

But dont forget: some people are mighty good athaving a poker face. My gift is that my face betrays

no fear, even with the cold metal of a six shooter pressed against my forehead. Poker Face Jace says

Ive got a better poker face than him.

    OBSERVE T E VERY FIRST

EXPRESSION.When someone catches sight of you, remember the

very rst expression that its over their face. If theynarrow their eyes, they are most likely not happy tosee you. If their eyebrows go up, they probably are

happy to see you, or surprised. Sometimes their rstexpression lasts only a second. Then they put on a

new expression. Believe the rst one.

My Thorn is that I am not good at reading people but Ma Evangeline taught me ve expressions.

    Here they are:

    1. If someones mouth curves up & their eyes crinkle, that is a Genuine Smile.

2 . If their mouth stretches sideways & their eyesare not crinkled, that is a Fake Smile.

    3. If a person turns down their mouth & crinkles uptheir nose, they are disgusted.

    4. If their eyes open real wide, they are probably surprised or scared.

    5. If they make their eyes narrow, they are either

mad at you or thinking or suspicious.

Trust your Intuition, your instinct, your gutfeeling, the prickly hairs on the back of your neck.

If something feels wrong, it probably is.
