As the only FE College in London to win a TES Award in 2016, you know your future will be bright with us!

2GOOD OFSTED

We have been awarded an Ofsted rating of Good, and been praised for our strong focus on careers, employment and increase in achievement. The report also highlighted that coming to West London College gives you more than just an academic qualification, with students completing additional awards.

All students automatically become members of the Students’ Union (SU) when they enrol at West London College. The SU works closely with the Leadership Team and helps make the important decisions that face the College every day. They also organise events and leisure activities such as employability fairs, guest speaker presentations and talent shows. Members of the SU can apply for an NUS card, which qualifies them for discounts at various shops, restaurants and cinemas.

The SU Executive Committee is made up of elected student representatives. We have a committee per College, working together to ensure that your voice is heard. Students can apply for positions such as President, Student Governor and Equality & Diversity Officer in elections that take place in mid-September each year.

Our students’ safety is of the highest importance to us. Every one of our Colleges has a safe environment where you are free to reach your full potential. All students, staff and visitors need an ID badge to access College buildings and security teams are on hand at all times. We also have a team of trained safeguarding officers based at each College for you to discuss any queries or concerns about safeguarding with.

SAFETY, SECURITY & SAFEGUARDING

Your parents or guardians will want to ensure that you are making the right decision for your future. They want to know that as an education provider, we not only take an interest in our students’ success rates but also your general wellbeing while you are at the College. We believe in working with them to help you to succeed.

Students from our Level 3 Applied Science course have taken part in Project M for the Diamond Light Centre to help conduct a brand new scientific experiment.

Project M is an exciting research project to help understand how amino acids and other additives influence the formation of different polymorphs

of calcium carbonate. One hundred schools and colleges took part, each sending ten unique samples of calcium carbonate to the Diamond Centre to analyse.

Once the samples were analysed, our students were able to login to the system to see their own individual data which will be part of a larger set of published results.

Apprenticeships are a great opportunity if you want to progress to a higher qualification, gain work experience or follow a vocational route to employment. The range of skills and knowledge you achieve will prepare you for whichever future path you choose to pursue. Apprenticeships are available across most industry sectors and are a great way to gain recognised qualifications while working and gaining real workplace experience.

Page 25: WLC.AC.UK 020 8741 1688

WLC.AC.UK/ APPRENTICESHIPS

Studying an apprenticeship offers you the opportunity to:

• Earn while you learn

• Learn on the job

• Benefit from support during training

• Develop the skills employers want

• Gain a nationally recognised qualification

WHY BECOME AN APPRENTICE?

Knowledge Element: This is the technical certificate and covers the theory which is delivered when you attend College. These are the skills you will put into practice at work.

Competence Element: This is the practical side of your programme, with targets and checks to guarantee that your employer is supporting you and you are making progress.

Functional Skills: This is the area that covers English, Maths and ICT.

Transferable Skills: These are the skills that help you develop your personal learning and thinking.

HOW DOES THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME WORK?

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must:

• Be a resident in the UK/EU for the years prior to the enrolment date

• Not be a graduate or qualified at Level 4 or above

• Not hold a vocational qualification in a similar subject area

• Not be participating in any other funded education or training, including school or college courses

ELIGIBILITY FOR APPRENTICESHIPS?

24

Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers to make sure they offer a structured programme that takes you through the skills you need. There are targets and checks to make sure that your employer is supporting you and you are making progress.

As an employee you will be in employment for most of your time, as most training takes place on the job. The rest usually takes place at College or a specialist training organisation.

WHAT TRAINING CAN I EXPECT TO RECEIVE?

Your employment will be for at least 30 hours per week. There may be a small number of circumstances where you cannot complete the full 30 hours. In these cases employment will be for more than 16 hours per week.

HOW MANY HOURS WILL I WORK?

This qualification is for those who want to start a career in IT support.

Organisations increasingly rely on computer systems in all areas of their operations and decision-making processes. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that IT systems run correctly and are regularly maintained. IT support, or technical support, is a service that provides this kind of support, as well as helping with specific problems with computer technology. IT support technicians may install and configure computer systems, diagnose hardware and software faults, and solve technical and applications problems, either over the phone or in person, and monitor and maintain the computer systems and networks of an organisation. Organisations need the IT support to ensure that their digital products, services and systems work effectively.

This programme is suitable for 16—18 year old non-native speakers of English who have just arrived in the UK, and for 16+ learners who have attended school here and need further specialised English support to help them succeed in the UK.

There are workshops and trips throughout the year to make the learning rich and interesting. There is also support for Looked After Children (LAC).

Fresh from a visit to Parliament in Westminster, ESOL students from Ealing Green College were treated to a visit from Rupa Huq, Member of Parliament for Ealing Central and Acton as part of their studies on the UK’s system of Government.

Rupa discussed her life as an MP, explaining the process for Prime Minister’s Question Time, MP surgeries and Select

Committee meetings. She then took questions from students about a wide range of topics, including how she got into politics, how e-petitions can influence government, media coverage of MPs and the refugee camp at Calais.

She also stressed the importance of students and young people registering and turning out to vote in both national and local elections.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Our Parent Panels and Employer Boards enable us to gain valuable feedback that can help us to shape our teaching to better meet the needs of students and help prepare them for employment.

Our well-established Parent Panel offers parents an exciting opportunity to meet at both Southall and Hammersmith sites to review current provision and develop it further to ensure curriculum is relevant and supports learners’ needs in promoting independent living.

What is the deadline for application?

We accept applications right through to August 2018, but we do recommend applying as soon as possible so you have the best opportunity of getting a place on the course of your choice. If you apply later in the academic year you might need to attend a drop in interview and enrolment session. For the latest information please visit wlc.ac.uk/enrolment.

Are there minimum requirements?

Each course has individual entry requirements based on the course level and specification. These can be found in the relevant sections of this guide and on our website. Some courses may require initial assessments.

Is there an interview following the application?

There is usually an interview to attend, where if successful you will then be given a conditional/unconditional offer and invited to priority enrolment in August.

Are there any Open Days I can attend?

Yes, each College has Open Days throughout the year. Please see the inside cover of this guide for dates, and book your place at wlc.ac.uk/events.

Are there any Taster Days?

Yes we run a series of Taster Days where you can try different activities, explore the College, and talk to your future tutors and classmates. Please visit wlc.ac.uk/events for the latest information.

Enrolment starts in August, for dates and times please check wlc.ac.uk/enrolment.

What is the possible progression after I finish my course?

Our courses are designed to prepare students for their future careers and help them gain transferable skills. Every student is offered the opportunity for work experience, and there are many progression routes within the College. Please speak to a careers advisor for more information.

What happens if I change my mind about the course?

If you change your mind before classes start, you can come for an interview with a tutor from the new course you are interested in. If you change your mind after your course has started, you have a short period in which you can change to a different course, subject to places and entry requirements.
