8) Debug-Boot PL603

The SDIO2 and Debug Mode header can be used to force the WL865 in Debug or in Boot mode by means of proper jumper configuration. The default jumper configuration is shown in Figure 3-8.

Figure 3-8: Debug and Boot configuration Header

The jumper configuration of PL603 allows to use the WL865E4-P in different modes:

• BOOT MODE: (USB only) PL603 2-4, is used for firmware download, it should

be set in contemporary with Diagnostic Mode, PL603 1-3.

• DIAGNOSTIC MODE: (USB only) PL603 1-3, is used for RF tests and need a

different firmware. The BOOT mode should be disabled PL603 4-6 or

unplugged.

• APPLICATION MODE: (USB does not work) It is a USB to UART0. For running

the application software, do not place any Jumper on PL603 or place it at PL603

3-5 and PL603 4-6.

In application mode the second USB to UART1 is also available.

9), 10), 11) Switches and PL606

The EVB has three SMD push buttons as shown in Figure 3-9.

Figure 3-9: EVB push buttons

PB1 is connected only to PL606-1 to be externally wired to any desired GPIO pin on any other connector’s header.

PB2 is connected to PL606-2 and goes directly to the WL865E4-P RESET#, an active low HW Reset pin, press and release it to unconditionally reset the module.

PB3 is connected to the PL606-3 and goes straight to the GPIO10 of the WL865E4-P module, use it as an external input for GPIO10.

12), 13) UART0 and UART1 (preliminary EVBs could not have the micro USB connector for UART1)

The WL865E4-P interface has two UART ports (Figure 3-10): one 4-wires high speed UART0 and one 2-wires UART1 port. Both ports have an independent FTDI chipset to translate the USB to UART and interface with correct VDD_VIO levels

Figure 3-10: UART ports

For both ports, the UART signals go directly to the module, but they are also sent to PL601 on the top side and PL404 on the bottom side, to make possible the communication between the WL865E4-P and Arduino Uno.

As explained in point 8, the UART0 and UART1 are available only in application mode (no jumpers plugged on PL603).

14), 15) 16) On/Off Switch, LEDS and Power Configuration Jumpers (PL301 and PL302)

The slide switch located on the left side of Figure 3-11, allows to power up the module: in ON position it enables all 3 VDD power sources of the module, VDD_WLAN, VDD_BLE and VDD_IO, no matter its value. 3V3 is to be considered the default.

The WL865E4-P can have different VIO voltage value with respect to core. This is selected on Jumper headers PL302 and PL301. If no jumpers are plugged into these headers the only ON position of the switch is not enough to correctly powering the module.

Figure 3-11: Switch and Power Headers

The Jumper position and the description is detailed in Figure 3-12

Page 15: WL865E4-P EVB User Guide...TELIT and the Stylized T Logo are registered in Trademark Office. All other product or service ... In Figure 3-2 and Figure 3-3 the Top and Bottom side view

Figure 3-12: Jumper configuration for power settings

Basically, the jumper PL302, is used to separate the main power module’s supply from the rest of the EVB to allow current consumption tests.

PL302 1-3 and 3-5, allows to choose the voltage for the module’s VIO port, 1V8 (1-3) or 3V3 (3-5).

PL302, 2-4 and 4-6, allow to supply other EVB components like voltage translators, MEMS sensors and external memory, with the same voltage level selected in PL302 1-3 and 3-5.

If jumper PL302 if placed at 3-5, the second PL302 jumper should be place at 4-6, default configuration.

The jumper on PL301 3-5 allow to send the VDD_BLE power supply to the VUSB pad of the WL865E4-P while PL301 4-6 connects internally generated 3V3 to the Module RF and Core power.

The PL301 can be used also as an insertion point to measure current consumption of the module or for external power supply use.

The WL865E4-P EVB has three different LED’s on the left part shown in Figure 3-11, each LED indicates a specific status:

LED Red ON– 3V3 voltage ON.

LED Green ON– Bluetooth Active

LED Yellow ON– WIFI Active

17), 18) 19) Other Connectors

Other connectors that can be used to wire or monitoring other signals that could be needed for development purposes are:

PL601 – UART connector (Figure 3-13): pins 8 and 10 correspond to UART1 while pins 3, 7, 9 and 11 to UART0.

4. WL865E4-P BASIC OPERATIONS

General Information on Power Supply

This EVB is mainly designed for SW development,

The board can be power supplied in different ways:

1) Direct USB supply by means of a USB cable (5V, 500mA) on UART0 SMD USB connector;

2) By means of a 2xAA 1V5 batteries on the bottom side by using the battery holder provided with the packaging, or by means of a standard lithium 3.6V battery plugged into the SMD battery connector on the bottom side (the WL865E4-P does not embed a battery charger),

3) By plugging Arduino on the bottom side, if you supply Arduino Uno-Rev3 board with its own supply source (Arduino Shield)

4) By means of external power supply sources directly connected to proper header of PL302 and PL301

The WL865E4-P is not able to supply the Arduino board.

The power sources 1-3 activate a DC/DC and an LDO that create the 3V3 and 1V8 necessary to the board operation. The DC/DC 3V3 power is noisy. Consider at least 1dBm of better performance in RX sensitivity and EVB TX margin if powered from 3V3 bench power supply 4).
