9 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration Elrod Commons Stop by the registration table, meet other parents, Living Room enjoy refreshments and pick up your Parents and Family Weekend tote, which will include the latest schedule. Your student may pick up the tote for you.

1:30- Career Conversations: 10 Things Employers Elrod Commons 2:30 p.m. Want Students to Learn in College Stackhouse Theater Join the Career Services staff as they discuss important skills and qualities that employers look for in college graduates. This session is appropriate for parents of students with known or unknown future plans, including employment or graduate school.

2:30-4 p.m. Senior Capstone Projects Elrod Commons Senior English majors describe their capstone Room 216 projects, undertaken in sections of English 413, Senior Research and Writing. In these small, collaborative seminars, seniors work closely with English faculty. Includes time for one-on-one conversations.

3-4 p.m. Greek Life Q&A Hillel House Fraternity and sorority leaders, along with Multipurpose Room Student Affairs staff, will be available to answer questions. Session is geared toward parents of first-year students.

3-4 p.m. Johnson Scholars Family Reception Evans Dining Hall A welcome reception for Johnson Scholars and their families. 3-4 p.m. Open House Tucker Multimedia Center The modern foreign language departments Tucker Hall, Room 408 welcome you to an open house to meet professors, majors and minors of the various modern languages. Learn about course offerings and study-abroad opportunities for modern language students. Refreshments will be served to give your mid-afternoon lull a boost.

9 a.m.- Outing Club Hike Off Campus 12 p.m. See the fall colors in Rockbridge County with trip leaders from the Outing Club. Hike location will be close to campus and rated easy to moderate. We will depart campus at 9 a.m. and be back by noon. Rugged shoes, a water bottle and weather-appropriate clothing are all you need. Heavy downpours will cancel the hike. Please RSVP to [email protected] to save a seat in the van or to tell us if you can car pool.

10 a.m.- Innovations on a Theme, Fine Art and Flowers Reeves Center 4 p.m. The Washington and Lee Chapter of Habitat for Humanity invites all parents and students to a special interpretive event. Talented Rockbridge County flower arrangers will interpret in selected porcelain pieces from the collection, floral arrangements and Louise Herreshoff Reeves’ paintings.

JOHN W. ELROD UNIVERSITY COMMONS LIVING ROOMThe John W. Elrod University Commons brings together student, faculty and staff services and blends state-of-the-art technology with the historic charm of the campus architecture. The 89,000-square-foot building opened in late summer 2004 and is home to the University Store, Career Services, the Marketplace and Café ’77 dining facilities, a game room and TV lounge, a 196-seat theater and auditorium, student organization offices, meeting spaces and the office of Student Affairs. The outdoor amphitheater adds a gathering place and a boardwalk bridge connects the Elrod Commons to Cadaver Bridge and the parking garage.

JOHN W. ELROD UNIVERSITY COMMONS LIVING ROOMThe Office of Health Promotion hosts a display on educating students about high-risk behaviors. The new Green Dot program along with the Avon Foundation grant on Healthy Relationships will be featured. Please stop by the Elrod Commons living room to learn more about the efforts of the Student Health and Counseling team, LIFE peer health educators, One in Four, SPEAK, the Campus Community Coali-tion, and Traveller.

LYKES ATRIUM, WILSON HALLDrawing Italy 2011, a biennial exhibition of Washington and Lee student artwork, will be on view in Wilson Hall’s Lykes Atrium. Every other year, W&L art students have the opportunity to live and draw on site in Italy as part of the spring term studio art course led by Professor Kathleen Olson. Working in pen and ink, pastel and wa-tercolor, students use their travel experiences as inspiration for their own work, while taking advantage of the distinctive Mediterranean light. McCARTHY GALLERY, HOLEKAMP HALL“Repressed and Reflective” by John Lee. The title of John Lee’s exhibition reflects his interests in color, specific color events and the type of color that he is interested in.The exhibit will run from September through December. R. E. LEE POSTER SESSIONResearch students will display summaries of their summer projects (Leyburn Library, Main Floor). Posters will be on display throughout the weekend. Students will be available from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Friday to discuss their projects.

STANIAR GALLERY, WILSON HALLI-Hsiung Ju: Journey Home: I-Hsiung Ju, professor emeritus of art at W&L, will present selections from two recent series of scroll paintings informed by his extensive practice of traditional Chinese brush work. Over the 20 years that he was on the faculty at W&L, Ju won numerous awards as an educator and an artist. Since retiring

in 1989, he has developed courses and workshops on Chinese brush painting and regularly lectures on the subject. Ju’s teachings have been published in several books and can be seen in a series of lessons available on video. WILLIAMS GALLERY, HUNTLEY HALLTaking on Tradition: An invitational group show of young Virginia painters and printmakers working in the two-dimensional art mediums of drawing, printmaking and painting. Kathleen Hall, Rebecca Kallem, Brian Kelley, Devin Mawdsley, Anna Wagner and Amanda Wagstaff are exploring the expressive potential of traditional materials, while being rooted in the discipline of drawing and coloring from perception. They all received their undergraduate degrees at Virginia universities and are at various stages of their educations and careers in fine arts.This exhibition is curated by Linda Carey who teaches at the College of William & Mary.
