On Monday, The New Jersey Senate Transportation Committee advanced a

proposal to increase fines for highway drivers who fail to stay right except to pass.

The current fines range between FIFTY to TWO HUNDRED dollars, but the new

proposal will increase these fines to a mandatory ONE HUNDRED to THREE

HUNDRED dollars. The bill¶s sponsor, State Senator Donald Norcross, said that

conversations with law enforcement officials have referred to this as one of the

leading causes of road rage. Norcross was quoted as saying ³It tends to be more

the out-of-state drivers, who are not aware of our stay right law. So, what we want

to do here is raise awareness and make the roads a little safer.´ At least FIFTY

dollars from each fine will be put towards new signs to remind New Jersey drivers

of the law.

Demetrius Helwin, a victim of the Chardon High School Shooting in Ohio who was listed

in critical condition, passed away early Tuesday morning. News of Helwin¶s death came

a few hours after another victim, Russel King Jr., was pronounced brain-dead. King and

Helwin were TWO of FIVE students shot at the high school just outside of Cleveland,

Ohio when shooting broke out on Monday morning. They are now the SECOND (2nd)

and THIRD official deaths, one victim was pronounced dead hours after the shooting.

The shooter, who has been identified as T.J Lane, seems to be a victim of bullying. Lane

warned his friends about his plan TWO days in advance and told them not to come to

school that day. Lane is cooperating with authorities and is scheduled for a court

appearance this afternoon in Cleveland.

Officials have ruled the death of a TEN year-old girl to be a homicide. Joanna Ramos, a

fifth grade student at Willard Elementary School in California died of blunt force trauma

to the head SIX hours after a physical altercation with a female classmate. Ramos and the

classmate, 11, challenged each other to a fight after school. Ramos was involved in an

after-school activities program that started only FIFTEEN minutes after school ended.

Officials learned the fight happened during this FIFTEEN minute window in an alley

near the school. The girls began hitting each other, but no weapons were used. After the

fight, Ramos returned to school and her scheduled after-school program. She stayed in

the program for over an hour, displaying no obvious signs of physical trauma. The school

didn¶t receive word of the altercation until after Ramos was admitted to the hospital.

Bullying is not believed to be a factor in this case.

Gas prices are rising throughout the United States, even costing FOUR dollars or

more per gallon in some places, but European Countries can¶t feel sorry for us

considering some of them are paying over ELEVEN dollars for one gallon of

regular unleaded fuel. In the UK, the average cost of a gallon of gas is currently

NINE DOLLARS AND EIGHTY-FIVE CENTS ($9.85). Some of the reasons for

such high prices are that the government collects taxes from the price and the fuel

producers, such as EXXON or SHELL, take a large percent of profit as well. Last

year alone, SHELL made over TWENTY-EIGHT billion dollars in profit. In

some European countries, people are not satisfied unless they are behind the

wheel of a car which gets at least SIXTY miles per gallon, which forces many

people into small smart cars. We are looking at a future where people might care

more about how many miles per gallon their car gets rather than how many miles

 per hour it can drive.

Sunken treasure lost centuries ago has been recovered in Spain. In 1804, a ship

called The Mercedez left Peru and stopped in Uruguay. It was close to Spain when

British ships attacked the Spanish Fleet, sinking The Mercedez along with her

crew and cargo. Over 200 civilians and sailors lost their lives that day, and the

collection of Gold and Silver coins aboard the ship, worth an estimated FIVE-

HUNDRED million dollars, laid at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for over

TWO centuries. Today, the coins have finally reached Spain, the country they

were originally destined for. FIVE years ago a Florida company called Odyssey

Marine Exploration found the treasure, claimed it, and shipped it back to the

United States. However, Spain won a long legal battle to recover the coins.

Spanish officials are currently trying to restore, catalog, and conserve the

collection of approximately SIX-HUNDRED thousand coins.

ORGINAL SOURCE MATERIAL

Page 1- I shortened the article, summarized it, and re-organized it, putting it into my own words.

Own up. In a hurry to get to work or a meeting, you¶ve encountered a slowpoke hogging the left lane onI-80 or the Turnpike and secretly wished you had one of those monster trucks with 66-inch tires so you

could roll over his sedan.

Maybe you¶ve even passed him on the right and displayed a hand signal letting him know you think he¶snumber one.

Drivers who hate it when fellow travelers clog the left lane, take heart. The New Jersey SenateTransportation Committee Monday advanced a proposal to increase fines for drivers who fail to stay rightexcept to pass ² from $50 to $200 now, to $100 to $300, with $50 to go toward signs remindingmotorists entering New Jersey about the stay right law.

"Having conversations with law enforcement, they refer to this as one of the triggers for road rage," stateSen. Donald Norcross (D-Camden), the bill sponsor, said of left-lane campers.

He got to experience express lane obstructions first-hand on his way to Trenton Monday, saying,

"Certainly, driving here today just reminds me why this is a good bill."

"It tends to be more the out-of-state drivers, who are not aware of our stay right law," Norcross said. "So

what we want to do here is raise awareness and make the roads a little safer."

Almost all states require slower traffic to stay right, but New Jersey is one of the stricter states when itcomes to keeping the left lane open except to pass. Other states have variations. In neighboringPennsylvania, for example, motorists traveling at a speed greater than the traffic flow can stay in the left

lane.

New Jersey Senate Bill No. 530 passed the committee 3-1, with Norcross and state Sens. Nicholas J.Sacco (D-Hudson) and Robert M. Gordon (D-Bergen) voting to release it and state Sen. JosephPennacchio (R-Morris) opposing.

Pennacchio agrees in theory with keeping the traffic flowing, but said increasing fines in a state where

fees are already high can be seen as "draconian."

He said that last week, there was the "move over" measure, where drivers were required to move over onelane or slow down when approaching stopped emergency or highway safety vehicles that flashed their warning lights.

"We had the move over law last week that said you¶ve got to move from the right to the left. Now we get

the move-from-the-left-to-the-right law," Pennacchio said. "Eventually, we¶re going to run out of lanes."

There were 5,127 tickets written for violations of the stay right law in the last calendar year, according to

the state judiciary. It is a 2-point violation for New Jersey drivers.

Page 14: WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

8/2/2019 WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wknj-newscast-recovered 14/20

Norcross said that in talking with State Police, drivers usually aren¶t cited for failure to stay right unless

they camp out in the lane for three miles.

"Some of them won¶t get out of the left-hand lane until the lights of the state trooper cars" are flashing, hesaid. "They are completely oblivious."

Norcross, who encounters left-lane slowpokes during his frequent trips on the Atlantic City Expressway,is hopeful the increased fines and new signs will be approved by the full House by the end of the year.

Steve Carrellas, New Jersey representative of the National Motorists Association driving rights group, said the association supports efforts by Norcross to foster smooth, safe and efficient flow of traffic on

multi-lane highways.

The association every year designates June as "lane courtesy month," and Carrellas said the clogging of the left lane is always a "hot button" for the general motoring public.

"We and all motorists who find poor lane courtesy a detraction from safe and pleasurable driving support

the senator in his efforts to improve lane courtesy on New Jersey¶s highways," he said.

HOBOKEN -- The death of a Stevens Institute of Technology senior found on campus yesterday is not a

homicide, but the cause and manner of his death have not yet been determined, authorities said today.

Mark Testa, 22, of Spotswood, was found dead in his room at about 3:05 p.m. and he was pronounceddead at the scene at 3:30 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

There were no signs of trauma, forced entry, struggle or foul play in the Palmer Hall dorm room where hewas found clothed and in bed, DeFazio said. It appears Testa had not been seen since the middle of last

week, the prosecutor said.

The cause and manner of Testa's death are pending further studies, DeFazio said, based on a report by the

state Medical Examiner's Office in Newark.

Page 3-  This story combined with other articles I had previously read and News stories watched on the

subject. I added numerous details and put it in my own words.

CLEVELAND - MetroHealth Medical Center confirmed a third student, Demetrius Hewlin , has diedfollowing a shooting rampage at Chardon High School that ended with five shot and one under arrest.

His family made the following statement:³We are very saddened by the loss of our son and others in our Chardon community. Demetrius was ahappy young man who loved life and his family and friends. We will miss him very much but we are proud that he will be able to help others through organ donation. We ask that you respect our privacyduring this difficult time.³

Hewlin was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center Monday morning, along with two other students,16-year-old Daniel Parmertor and 17-year-old Russell King Jr.

Parmertor was the first to die Monday. King was confirmed dead by the Cuyahoga County Medical

Examiner's Office Tuesday morning.

Page 4- I left out some details which weren¶t necessary and put it in my own words.

A convicted felon claiming to have accidentally shot and killed his wife while showing her his new gunhas been arrested and charged with manslaughter.

William Carson Merrill, 32, told investigators that he was showing his wife of eight years the laser beam

on his new AK-47 Tuesday morning when he accidentally shot her in the chest.

Merrill was arrested by detectives Thursday on one charge of manslaughter with a firearm and another for

possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Merrill had originally been released following police questioning without any charges filed.

'This man's reckless and careless handling of a firearm has resulted in the death of a wife and mother and

has destroyed his family,' Sheriff Donald Fleming said in a news release obtained by the Daytona Beach News Journal.

Stephanie Leslie Merrill, 30, had been giving the couple¶s 3-year-old daughter a bath at the time of theincident and was found dead on the bathroom floor of their rented Palm Coast, Florida home when police

arrived to the scene.

Merrill is currently being held on bail set at $200,000 at the Flagler County Inmate Facility.

Page 5- I researched where Willard Elementary School was, shortened the article including allthe important details, and put it in my own words.

Officials have ruled the death of a 10-year-old girl who got into a fight last week to be a homicide, authorities said Monday.

Joanna Ramos, a fifth-grade student at Willard Elementary School, died of blunt force trauma to the headsix hours after an altercation with a female classmate that lasted less than a minute, said Long BeachPolice spokesman Sgt. Rico Fernandez.

Authorities have identified the other girl, who is 11, as well as several onlookers, and they are continuing

to investigate what happened.

"There are several accounts of what transpired based on interviews with witnesses, but we have not

concluded the precise motive," Fernandez said.

In a statement, police said Ramos and her unidentified classmate had challenged each other to a plannedfight when their school session ended Friday. "The two girls met in a nearby alley next to a church and

began hitting each other," Fernandez said.

The fight was brief, and no weapons were involved, authorities said.

Page 16: WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

8/2/2019 WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wknj-newscast-recovered 16/20

According to Long Beach Unified School District spokesman Chris Eftychiou, Ramos finished her regular school session at 2:12 p.m. Friday and was supposed to remain on campus to begin her scheduledafter-school program at 2:30.

"We believe the altercation occurred during that 15-minute window because she apparently left andreturned for the session, which involves help with homework and academic-related activity," said

Eftychiou.

After the fight, the girls left and went their separate ways.

Ramos stayed in the afternoon session for about an hour but did not exhibit obvious signs of physicaltrauma, said Eftychiou. "When she did complain of not feeling well, her cousin picked her up, but we hadno indication she was involved in an altercation," he said.

"Only when she was at the hospital did we get word about the altercation, and there is no indication that

bullying was a factor," said Eftychiou.

Once the investigation and autopsy are complete, the findings will be turned over to the Los AngelesCounty District Attorney's Office for review and to determine whether charges will be filed in the case.

No arrests have been made, authorities said.

On Monday, grief counselors were brought into Willard Elementary to assist instructors and students. "It

was a somber day," said Eftychiou.

Ramos had been enrolled at the school for about a year and a half, he said.

Page 6-I cut a lot of finer details and numbers out, as they all weren¶t important for the listener tograsp the concept.

Gas prices might have breached the $4 per gallon mark in the U.S., but there won't be muchsympathy for the American plight in Europe. In fact, that U.S. price of £2.52 a gallon lookshighly affordable compared to the UK's current average cost of £6.22 ($9.85).

In some places here you'll pay an eye-watering £7.27 ($11.52) for a gallon of super unleaded. And prices throughout the rest of Europe are similarly high. But it is worth sparing a thought for the hard-pressed Norwegians who'll pay £7.28 ($11.54) for a gallon of the regular stuff acrosstheir country.

If the price of oil was the only factor to dictate the expense of gas it wouldn't be such a bitter pill.

But it isn't. The government decides how much we're going to pay per gallon. Surprise, surprise,it also decides that the majority of it should be diverted to their coffers. So of our £6.22 average,£3.74 ($5.92), or a bit over 60%, ends up in the Treasury's back pocket.

The government isn't the only guilty party. Fuel producers take 36%, which goes some way toexplaining Shell's obscene £18.1bn ($28.6bn) profits from last year.

Page 17: WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

8/2/2019 WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wknj-newscast-recovered 17/20

And of course unrest in the Middle East including sanctions against Syria and simmeringdiscontent over Iran isn't helping. But every time the price of oil goes up, the British Governmentis quids in. Its second tax, VAT (Value Added Tax, similar to U.S. sales taxes), is levied on thefinal cost, giving us an inescapable double whammy.

Hardly unsurprisingly, all this money grabbing has had a noticeable effect on the cars Europeansdrive. People now discuss their motors in terms of miles per gallon rather than miles per hour.Owning a car that does a mere 35mpg seems so last century. And no one will be impressedunless your mpg figure starts with a six.

Would I like to be smoking about in a dirty great beast with a dipsomaniac's thirst for the hardstuff? Of course I would. But if I could afford to buy such a car, running it would be akin tohaving a mistress who drinks champagne rather than chardonnay.

At first I felt deep resentment at being forced into a small car. But you know what? Today'ssmall cars are big in benefits. The Volkswagen Polo I now drive is the same size as the first ever

Golf. The difference is it's comfier and has more features, including a petrol gauge that moves inslow motion.

Fuel is a drug the U.S. has long since needed weaning off. Admittedly Americans have to cover greater distances than Europeans. But you don't need a glorified double bed powered by athrobbing great V8 to do that. A sensibly-sized car with a two-liter turbo will do the job just ascomfortably.

And with developing nations such as China, Brazil and India demanding ever more fuel, the planet can't put up with anyone's penchant for gas-guzzling monsters any more.

But if the European experience is anything to go by, the $4 gallon isn't going to alter drivinghabits dramatically. America needs petrol prices to double if people are to permanently park uptheir 15mpg pick-up trucks. Maybe then it'll elicit a bit of sympathy from over here.

Page 7- News story I watched and took notes on, put in my own words.

Page 8- I watched sports news.

Page 9- I only included the score of the game and Lundqvist¶s stats. I left out the interview and

numerous other numbers, such as the record of each team.

Henrik Lundqvist knows all about 30-win seasons. He already held the NHL record by hitting the mark in

each of his first six seasons. With yet another shutout, King Henrik is now a perfect 7 for 7.

Lundqvist had a relatively quiet night, but he had the slimmest of margins to work with. Carl Hagelinscored late in the first period, and Lundqvist stopped all 13 shots the New Jersey Devils fired at him in the

New York Rangers' 2-0 victory on Monday.

Page 18: WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

8/2/2019 WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wknj-newscast-recovered 18/20

Lundqvist (30-12-4), who entered with the league's lowest goals-against average in February, dropped iteven further as he posted his NHL-best eighth shutout of the season and the 43rd of his career. He made alunging glove snare with 2:26 left to rob Ilya Kovalchuk and secure the milestone victory.

"It means that things have been going well, but it also means that I played for a club that's given me anopportunity to play a lot," Lundqvist said. "I have a pretty good team in front of me, as well. I'm happy I

reached it again.

"You always want to improve each year. So far this year it's been a good ride."

And then some. So often in recent seasons the Rangers have been in a struggle just to get into the playoffs. Now they are the ones being chased for a change. The Eastern Conference-leaders stretchedtheir advantage to nine points over Boston and Pittsburgh with a quarter of the season remaining.

On the flip side, the Devils have hit a sudden rut. After being the hottest team following the All-Star  break, New Jersey dropped its third in a row - following a four-game winning streak - and had its run of

seven straight road victories snapped.

"We have to keep going the same way," said tough-luck loser Martin Brodeur, who made 13 saves."We're doing a lot of good things. It's just not going our way right now. When we were winning, we played games we didn't deserve to win. We just have to work hard."

Hagelin gave the Rangers a 1-0 edge with 3:01 left in the first period. Ryan Callahan added an empty-netter with 1:06 left, his career-best 25th goal - with an assist from Hagelin - to make it 2-0. It was the

fewest shots allowed by the Rangers this season.

Brodeur wasn't tested much, either, in a game played with an edge on both sides. The Devils lost on theroad for the first time since Jan. 10 at Calgary. New Jersey had won two of the three previous meetings

with the Rangers this season, including a 1-0 victory in New York on Feb. 7.

Agitating Devils forward David Clarkson spent most of the night in the penalty box, serving 19 minutes -including a misconduct and a fighting major with Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky. Clarkson said he

didn't know why he was given the misconduct.

"No idea," said Clarkson, who logged 11 minutes, 14 seconds of ice time. "Dubinsky went after (Kovalchuk), and I went out and said something."

Clarkson dropped the gloves with Dubinsky in the second period, after he left his feet to hit Dubinsky

against the boards.

"I knew it was coming," Dubinsky said. "It was just a matter of time before somebody was going to fight

him. He seems to always turn away the tougher guys - not taking anything away from myself - and goafter other guys. It's just the way he is."

Despite being held to only four shots in the first period and none until more than seven minutes hadelapsed, the Rangers grabbed the lead on rookie Hagelin's 11th goal. After the Devils failed to get the puck out of their zone, New York defenseman Dan Girardi sent it behind the net. Callahan shoveled a

quick, short pass in front to Hagelin, who slammed a shot in at the left post.

Page 19: WKNJ Newscast Recovered)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wknj-newscast-recovered 19/20

That was enough to hand the Devils losses on back-to-back days and give the Rangers a 2-0-1 mark after

three games in four days.

"It was a great job by us," Hagelin said. "Maybe they were a bit tired, who knows? But at the same timethey were playing well. They were grinding us down low, but we found a way."

The Devils, who also had four shots in the first period, had the only power play in the first. Brodeur wasalso caught wandering out of his net a few times, but managed to get back into position before theRangers could catch him. Lundqvist made the best stop when he blocked Clarkson's backhanded try at the

doorstep with just under eight minutes left, during New Jersey's power play.

It was the pose seen 'round the world: Angelina Jolie stepped onto the Oscars red carpet, plantingher hands on her hips and forcefully jutted her right leg out in front of her, like she was George
