What is the SRC?

The SRC is the Student Representative Council of the University – the most powerful student representative body on campus. It is responsible for representing the interest of students in many university platforms, including—amongst others—Senate and Council of the university. In fact, Student Union is a term common in European Universities. The SRC also acts as a support structure for other student bodies such as clubs and societies and Schools and Faculty Councils.

The SRC is composed of 19 students: fifteen of these students are elected directly by the student body in accordance with the Electoral Rules. The other four are elected into the SRC through their constituencies and they represent: The All Faculty Council, All Residence Council, Sports Council and Postgraduate Association.

SRC GENERAL ELECTIONS

How to vote• Swipe your student card at the ICAM reader for voter verification and

confirmation that you have not voted previously;• Proceed to the scrutineer with the UV lamp and UV pen. After checking

your student card with the UV lamp, he/she will make a mark with the UV pen at the back of your student card;

• Scrutineers will check the voters roll to confirm your name on the voters roll, and once confirmed, will cross out your name on the voters roll. You will then be issued with a stamped ballot card;

• Proceed to the voting booths where a scrutineer will advise you on how to vote and also check your card to see that it is stamped;

• After voting on your ballot card, proceed to the ballot boxes to drop off your ballot card. A scrutineer will once again check that only the ballot card is being deposited and that the card is stamped;

• You will then be advised to leave the polling station because you have completed the steps in the voting process.

Remember that your vote is a secret!!!!! No preference is indicated on the ballot card.

NB : Please use the pencil provided to cast your vote.

There are 15 seats available on the SRC Committee and so when you receive your voting ballot card, you will be allowed to mark the numbers of 15 candidates whom you would like to see leading the SRC. If you like, you can Vote for less than fifteen preferred candidates, but not more than 15 because that will render your vote a spoilt one and thus disadvantaging your preferred candidates.

MESSAGE FROM THE ELECTORAL OFFICE

The Students’ Representative Council advocates for the rights and wellbeing of all students at the University of the Witwatersrand. The SRC offers support and services to enhance the student experience. It also serves as a link between University management and the student body. The role of the SRC is also to create a vibrant and active campus through social upliftment programmes, events and entertainment, academic and leadership development. It might not always seem that exciting but the work of the SRC really is vital to student life.Voting gives a sense of belonging and responsibility towards your own growth and happiness at this University. Exercising your vote also goes with patriotism. For many years, in the history of South Africa, a large majority of people did not have a right to participate in choosing their own leaders, with redress strategies, YOU now have an opportunity to choose who YOU want in the SRC, and that is a lifetime experience, which you must not forfeit.

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL THE CANDIDATES.

MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT!!!

MESSAGE FROM OUTGOING PRESIDENT

Leadership, at the level of SRC in particular, must never be perceived as another title that will look on your CV or a life fixated with perks, but rather it is a servant hood of the highest accord which requires one to be selfless and whole heartedly willing to serve the broader constituency of the Wits community. For one to decide to run for SRC it requires you to be actively involved and concerned about what happens on your campus and have taken active measures to be a part of the solution. Your decision as a candidate to run shows that you want to contribute your time, ideas and service to the rest of the students

Just remember that the focus of leadership is not so much about the leader, it is about the people we wish to lead. The heartbeat of students should ALWAYS be greater than our own selfish ambitions and pride. Always lead with integrity and treat others the way you would have them treat you. SRC is a student representative council therefore every issue a student brings should be treated with respect regardless of how trivial it may seem. You will make mistakes, say things and promise things that you will realize later that you cannot keep because of the nature of wits. My advice to the candidates is this, always be honest, and be true to yourself.

To students, make an educated vote, the prettiest face or the one who uses the best English, might not necessarily be the best person to represent 30000 students in the highest decision making bodies of the University. Take time to know the candidates, what the stand for and what is it they are planning to do in ensuring we challenge the status quo and serve students.

Remember the wise words of Fanon “Each generation must, out of relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it.” Let us not betray it as students by not voting, Best of Luck to all candidates and to all students. I know who I am voting for this year’s election; a tried and trusted leadership collective ready to serve all students. Question is: do you?

DASO MANIFESTO

1. Safety for allThe severe economic and social consequences of being affected by crime are serious, and can range from being unable to attend lectures due to physical injuries, high levels of post-traumatic stress which impacts negatively on studies. A DASO SRC will ensure that all areas of the campus must be well monitored by CCTV camera. The security at the University entrances needs to be enhanced by requiring proper identification of students entering and leaving by vehicle. The University must integrate campus security systems SAPS.

2. Student ForumYOU are taking the time to elect a good SRC to represent YOU. DASO acknowledges this fact and assures all Wits students that a DASO SRC will establish an effective communication system with students on all campuses. A DASO SRC will hold public meetings at least once a month. Student Forum

3. An SRC for all campusesUnlike other tertiary institutions, the SRC at Wits is a central SRC that serves students on all campuses. We recognise the failure of the current SRC to effectively engage with students on campuses other than the main Braamfontein East Campus. A DASO SRC will set up functioning offices at every campus and will ensure that communication is effective through this network.

4. FacilitiesThe Wits main campus has a severe lack of parking space for students and a mismanaged parking space for staff. This results in students arriving late for lectures, cars being clamped and vandalised and other inconveniences. A DASO SRC believes that the only solution to the parking problem is to create more parking space, either by utilising land around the University, or by building a parkade on existing parking space. The SRC must prioritise this issue and ensure that the management is made aware of the implication.

5. Financial ExclusionsEach year, many students face the same issue of financial difficulty, and a subsequent battle to get reinstated into the University. Such issues affect students’ performance academically by adding unneeded stresses. DASO is working closely with the DA Youth to ensure proper reform of the NSFAS. Many students are unable to benefit

6

Page 10: WITS SRC voters guide.pdf

from the fund because they are not “poor enough”. We believe that such criteria need to be amended to suit the current socio-economic standards. We also promote the conversion of a NSFAS loan into a bursary for students who perform well and the delay of interest charges on the loan until the student has completed his/her studies. A DASO SRC will work towards achieving minimum exclusions and will ensure that the needs of performing students are provided for. The SRC must also stand firm against unsubstantiated fee increases and unaffordable registration fees that lead to poor academic performance.

6. Study week before examsWits University commences both the mid and end of year exams immediately the day after the final semester lectures. For many students this provides an unbearable challenge, resulting in high failure rates where there could have been a greater success rate. A DASO SRC will push for a study week to be given between the final semester lecture and the commencement of the first exam. This will also allow for more consultation time with lecturers/tutors before the exam period.

7. Reopen O-villageO-village is currently closed due to high rent, however this also serves as a disadvantaged to students wanting to relax and kick back after a long week of lectures. We believe that students need to have a space on campus to relax and have social gatherings. Thus, a DASO SRC will ensure that through negotiation with the university O-village will be re-open. Maya’s has been closed on West campus we need to ensure that there is a new shop/company that takes over from Maya’s to ensure students do not have to walk to east campus.

8. Exam scriptsWe believe students must be able to get back their final exam scripts after they have written without going through an application process to ensure that they can see where they went wrong. We believe that the fee for supplementary exams must be reduced as students are not able to afford the cost.

9. FundraisingWe aim to make student forum fun by bringing artist and dj’s we as a DASO SRC will ensure SRC report back is fun and engaging. We will host a Mr and Mrs Wits annually to raise funds for the bail-out fund. We will have the students for students concert yearly to raise funds for students.

7

Page 11: WITS SRC voters guide.pdf

11. TechnologyWi-fi zones throughout the whole university. Upgrade of all computer services to ensure faster internet connection.

12. PolicyWe will implement the Bail Out Fund that will cater to all students who may lack finances for printing, supplementary exams, text books and excursions.

13. A DASO SRC will insure that students on West campus, Education campus and Medical school have more than just one place to buy food and they do not have to come to main. Especially Education and Medical campuses where there is only Olives and Plates and it costs a lot to eat there.

14. Coin slots in the Kudu bucks machines and kudu bucks machines in labs and libraries. We also want more printing facilities after hours on campus.

15. Expanding the shuttle service to accommodate all students around the City in places like Parkstation, Noord, Bree and Braamfontein

Residence Manifesto• Printing machines at residences.• Increase the WIFI radius at residences.• More computers at the computer labs.• Proper bus shelters and lighting for external residences.• Residences to all be disability friendly with a full time care - taker.• Quality food at catering residences. Allowing students to suggest meals that they would

like to eat.• Better entertainment rooms and recreation (mainly residences on main campus)• Extend the working hours of heaters and new wall heaters in most residences.• More investment in Residence sport teams.• Proper working lifts in our residences• Back-up generators in case of power cuts (NOT ALL RESIDENCES HAVE THIS)• New sleeping mattress• Self catering students to have one proper cooked meal a day because we cannot assume

they do have food as students are here to get degrees and not to learn how to cook.• Telephone extensions to be able to call lecturers’ offices on campus• One approved sleep over a month.

MANIFESTO - TRYRONE MICHAEL GRAY

My purpose and intent is to encourage and provide avenues for increasing unity among students and staff at Witwatersrand University, therefore I propose allowing isiZulu or at least one African language to be either fully or partially subsidized to allow greater opportunity to foster mutual communication.

Furthermore administration staff needs inter-faculty training to reduce red-tape, and create events whereby students from different faculties meet, to increase unity and stimulate multidisciplinary academic communication in order to facilitate an environment conducive to the creation of new ideas and the release of research and increase publication of academic journals.

It is also in the interest of both the students and the country to focus not only on career fares but also to allow volunteer students access to “Job Shadowing”, thereby unifying graduates skills with those needed in the job market.

Transparency of funds, as well as allowing for coin slots in the kudu bucks terminals thereby taking a Rawlsian approach to facilitate unity between those with coins and those with notes.

Also allowing the Village and centres on West Campus to be re-opened and run by students with students for students, the profits of which will help fund students in need by the efforts of students themselves, it will also allow for work experience, a valuable signal for prospective employers.

What we demand:1. The university must make transport and security available to students that stay around Braamfontein area between 8 pm and 12 mid - night for safety and security reasons. 2. Due to constant malfunctioning of computers and printing services, we demand that:The university must provide student helpers 7 days a week and must make provision for printing services at every university residence.

3. Students must write supplementary exams shortly after their June and December exams as opposed to the following year in January (writing sup in January is too costly for international students and students who stay far, and increases probability for failure).

4. Multi-level parking should be constructed for students because there is no sufficient parking space.

5. The dining hall must make provision for an online booking system – sometimes the booking system does not work!

6. Since the university has acknowledged South Point as a credible accommodation for students, the university must help students at South Point when they have complaints about poor conditions and services e.g. lack of hot water for showers.

7. International students should pay their fees in installments as opposed to once-off payments. They should also be allowed to register after having paid their tuition fees.

8. The fees office must make it a point that no additional costs are added to the students fees account towards the end of the academic year after bursaries and NSFAS have paid.

9. NSFAS must pay for one student club/gym/society subscription.

MANIFESTO - JIGNASSHA LALLOO

CHANGE IS FOR TODAY,NOT FOR TOMORROW WHEN IT DOESN’T MATTERI AM HERE TO MAKE THE CHANGE!

In life it is always said that winning is not everything, in my life I acknowledge that this might be so... However once you settle for second best, then that is surely all you will achieve. Personally I believe there is only one position I need to work towards and that is the highest point in every venture I undertake. Life has taught me that through the simple trait of respect for others and diligence in my endeavours success is not that far away. Interacting with people requires a level of leading by example rather than solely as an autocrat, the key is in earning the respect you demand.

The SRC in my opinion is a method to initiate change and give the students a voice in situations where they feel they have been dominated by authorities. As a member of the SRC I intend on evaluating every aspect that comes to my notice and making it a priority no matter how small the issue may be. I believe in making the changes that are required today rather than waiting for tomorrow when those changes may not even be needed anymore. I strongly believe in leaving behind a legacy whereby I am remembered even just by a few people for changing a piece of the world, it’s for this reason that I strive to be in a position to show my worth.

Sincerely

Jignassha Lalloo

CANDIDATE 17: AMON MAGUNJE

25

Page 29: WITS SRC voters guide.pdf

MANIFESTO - AMON MAGUNJE

BackgroundFundamental changes in the world as we know it today have been brought about by an elite group of few individuals. These individuals had the know-how, the belief and the drive embedded in them. Talk about Lincoln, Luther King, Madiba and Gandhi, all these were leaders who had these three in common. They knew what had to be done and how to do it regardless of the sacrifices. They had the belief that it was possible and the drive in them took them through all the adverse situations.

It is against this background that our great University finds itself in serious need of such individuals hence my compulsion to put my hand up and want to take up the challenge by getting a leadership role in the SRC.

Issues to be Addressed • To actively engage the University Administration in coming up with mechanism

to support students in their earlier years of study as their current pass-rate is dismally low and is continuing with the free fall.

• To lobby the University to take up an active role in ensuring that graduates get jobs when they complete their studies. The Wits system is one of the best in this country and yet this has not been fully exploited to ensure that graduates get jobs.

• To provide leadership that can be used as a “bridge” between the student body and the Administration not as a weapon of chaos, mayhem and disorderly orchestrated fighting of the two parties.

• To encourage the participation of the student body in the clubs and societies of the University, funds that the University has set aside for student leadership development, talent nurturing and skills perfection currently lye idle.

• To extend a hand to the large contingent international students who are generally marginalized, face expensive fees payments under very un-flexible payment plans and face unequal opportunities in vacation works and getting jobs after the completion of their studies.

MANIFESTO - SADE MOODLEY

NEVER BE BULLIED INTO SILENCE, ACCEPT NO ONE’S DEFINITION OF YOUR LIFE, DEFINE YOURSELF, MAKE THE CHANGES NEEDED TODAYWITH ME

The above is an illustration of how I lead my life. I strongly believe that my destiny is defined by how I live every single day. Diversity in any context is the key to success, whether someone is White, Black, Indian or Coloured we are the future of South Africa and then only can we become a united planet. Every person deserves the opportunity to succeed; it’s what you do with that opportunity that matters. I am my success! My objectives are thus simply to explore more thoroughly and find the opportunities that I know I can concur. There is no such thing as failure, through hard work, dedication and remaining grounded there will always be a path to success. I strive to be more than just a number or a name, I strive to be the woman who knows she made a success in her life because there is nothing more to do even if it were possible to turn back time. As a member of the SRC at the University of the Witwatersrand I wish to hear the voices of the students and make a difference because to me there is no such thing as tomorrow if today is already here. Students may rely on my declarations as if they have been conducted under oath due mainly to the fact that I believe respect should be earned and not demanded.

I am here, any day any time, if someone feels I can make a difference.

MANIFESTO - SELEMA PABALELO

10. Students must be fully supported and encouraged to participate in entrepreneurial activities during the FLEE MARKET week.

11. SRC must reach out to students by creating Q&A platforms at residence and faculty level, and give feedback to students on what they promised prior to elections

PROJECTw

33

Page 37: WITS SRC voters guide.pdf

MANIFESTO - project w

My Manifesto is simple: Make Wits Better. I am part of the Project W group which aims to make an SRC accountable to the students. This means that the focus must be on student issues and not on party politics that ignore the students and the campus. An SRC should strive to create an environment of learning, enjoyment, activism and intellectual engagement. The obstacles facing this vision are immense and can only be tackled using the Project W platform of MASS action: Money, Academics, Social and Services.

MONEYMoney issues are the single biggest problem facing students all around the world. At Wits, like many other universities around the country, students face problems not only on how to pay for their studies and particularly on time but also other issues like accommodation and the fact that many students often go hungry.

ACADEMICThe reason people attend university is ultimately to get an education but there are barriers. There is the issue of access to proper text books, under resourced, unavailable libraries, slow turn around times for marks and ineffective “Kudu Bucks” machines.

SOCIALWits should be accessible and enjoyable so students can learn in a more informal way. Excessive bureaucracy prevents regular social events and stops innovation in events that create inclusion. The IT infrastructure is also poor and difficult for students to access.

SERVICESThere are basic services that the university helps to provide, however these are not adequate. The bus system is often unclear, not extensive enough and parking is a problem for students with cars. There are also issues with safety and plenty can be to be done to secure the campus.

Should we be elected to the SRC I will do everything in my power to assist in dealing with these issues to Make Wits Better.

PYA

MANIFESTO - PYA

The PYA believes that issues are not resolved over-night and that we cannot promise students short term solutions to long term problems; we cannot put a bandage on a gaping wound. Therefore, the PYA has a vision for the university; it is a long term vision with short term goals which will put our university in a better place year-on-year. This is our strategy for the coming year and our vision for the next 3 years time, starting from now. The PYA wants to take this university somewhere and constructively so.

Where we are now √ The PYA championed and won the battle for a lower registration fee for

disadvantaged students through the Reduced Upfront Fee Payment Plan which began implementation in 2013

√ International students will be allowed to pay their fees in instalments from 2014. √ International students fees have been reduced, implementation in 2014. √ The PYA-led SRC in conjunction with the university Registrar resolved the

issue of students sleeping in libraries, all of these students will be assisted with accommodation. 15 of these students have already been assisted.

√ Revised the Sexual Harassment Policy of the university such that it protects students more thoroughly.

√ In the process of revising the Wits Language Policy. √ The PYA pushed the university to build bus shelters, Knockando, EOH and Esselen

bus shelters are approved for building. √ The PYA-led SRC of 2013 has an agreement with the university management for

buses going to Bree and Noord Street Taxi ranks as well as Park Station and night buses to student accommodation in Braamfontein.

√ The PYA-led SRC has, over a number of years, fought for a study break. From 2014 Wits will have a 3-day study break for the first time ever.

√ A new High Performance Sport system will be implemented with High Performance facilities.

√ A hockey Astro-turf has been built as well as a new futsal court.

46

Page 50: WITS SRC voters guide.pdf

The coming SRC term: √ Fighting for a longer study break. √ Increase the number of books available as eBooks and online material. √ Improve communication with the entire student population. √ Improve the efficiency of the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office √ Fight against fee increments above the inflation level. √ Engaging corporate for bursary packages. √ Advocate for increased budgets for schools councils. √ Increasing throughput by increasing the use of Academic Development

Programmes and tutorial programmes as well as academic talks to first years. √ Continue the battle for supplementary exams in the Faculty of Science. √ Cross Faculty Supplementary Exams √ Academic support to students involved in sports. √ Have a campus ambulance for the dignified transport of sick students; nobody

should have to be sick on the back of a bakkie. √ Increase effective cameras in libraries, especially 24 hour libraries. √ Call for a library services audit. √ Back-up buses for peak hours. √ Implement all agreements which the current SRC has with management and

various departments (such as transport, bus shelters, campus health and so on).
