PUBLISHED FOR THE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF GRACE CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, RUTLAND, VERMONT
Worship at Grace this Fall
It’s a Wonder-full Life!
Spiritual practice feeds that part of ourselves that is oriented toward
serenity, harmony, truth, compassion, gratitude, love and joy. But
these are not always words we use to describe the role of money in our lives. In the classic film, “It’s
a Wonderful Life,” a crisis of money creates vastly diverse reactions from several characters that can
hold up a mirror to our own relationships with money. In this four week series, we will “look”
squarely in the face of our money issues in compassionate ways that can offer more depth of meaning,
healing, and wholeness and a whole new “outlook” on what constitutes a wonder-full life.

Farewell to the
Weatherhoggs
On Sunday, Sept. 8,
Grace Church
celebrated 15 years of
dynamic ministry with
John and Tracy as
their call to the
church was dissolved.
John and Tracy will
move on to other opportunities while remaining in the
community where they have raised Kyle, Emma, and Tyler.
Hundreds gathered to thank them and wish them well at a
communion worship service and reception.
With Thanks …
We are grateful for the notes,
gifts, visits, and conversations
from many of you within the
congregation and community.
We have been blessed to
have been your pastors, and
Kyle, Emma, and Tyler have
been blessed with a church
family to nurture, care for,
and challenge them. We look
forward to hearing about all
that God has in store for you!
Blessings and love,
John and Tracy
Page 2 - The Star
We in the Church Council want to keep
everyone of Grace Church’s family up to date
regarding events ongoing in our church. We
continue to be very busy and are fully engaged on
several fronts.
First, the Council’s diaconate members have
formed a sub-committee called the Committee
on Pastoral Leadership. Its members are Ruth
and Richard Westfall, Diane Chartrand, Barbara
Kirk-Elkin, and David and Carolyn Hazen. Their
charge is to discuss and identify pulpit ministers
for the time being and to name an interim
minister search committee. It is common
practice that, in order to find a good fit interim,
we as a church collectively go through a process
of discerning what it is we are looking for.
Secondly, it is important to engage as many
people as possible in honest open dialogue about
where we are and where we are headed as a
church. To that end, a small group gathered to
begin this process on September 16th. The
discussion was honest and heart felt. The group
felt that we are just beginning this process and
are planning to include as many church members
as possible, including getting help from the
Vermont Conference. All action options are on
the table with many ideas shared.
Finally, a personal note. I am optimistic that we
can see our way to a future where Grace Church
will continue to be a place of love and
understanding, recognizing that humans will be
human, but like families that deal with different
points of view, we can remain in a loving
collection of folks who commonly believe in God
and His teachings and in Jesus His loving son.

Council Chair

Healing Ministry By Rev. Bob Boutwell
Grace Church offers the powerful Healing Ministry of Jesus Christ with the Rev.
Bob Boutwell. We have a Healing Prayer Service on the second Sunday of each
month in the Chapel at 11:25 AM following the regular worship service. At this
service persons who need prayer are invited to come forward to receive the laying
on of hands, healing prayers, and the anointing with oil by the pastor and deacons of
the church. This is a sacramental-like ordinance by which people are offered
blessings, cleansing of the soul, forgiveness of sins and healing of physical, mental, spiritual, and
relational ailments. At these services, we have been blessed to receive many miracles of healing in
answer to our prayers.
In Genesis 1: 26, God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness." In1:27,
"Male and female he created them.” In 2:24, "Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and
clings to his wife and they become one flesh." Together in marriage the husband and wife are blessed
with children to form a family. In an article in Spirituality and Health magazine, Paul Sutherland writes
about how important the husband /father is for the spiritual health of the children. Children need
fathers. According to the American Psychological Association, the absence of a father can result in
children who are bullies, who lack social skills, get lower grades in school, and have lower self esteem.
This in turn often results in drug abuse, alcoholism, jail, and divorce for the father-deprived child.
Dads express love, interact with the children, and play differently than mothers do. Boys and girls
need both their mothers and fathers. Both styles of parenting make for a healthy balance. Through
healing prayer Jesus can repair a broken relationship and the Holy Spirit can restore the health of a
sick marriage and repair an incomplete family.
In October, the Healing Prayer Service will take place not after worship on the second Sunday
but during worship at the 10 a.m. Sanctuary service on October 20. Members of the
congregation will be urged to come forward to receive healing prayers by Rev. Boutwell and deacons.
The Rev. Boutwell is also in his office at the church every Wednesday between 9 and 11:30 AM for
Christian Healing Prayers and consultations. No appointment is necessary. You may contact him by
telephone at 773.3057, by email at [email protected], or at [email protected].

Make Blankets for Detainees on the Border
Many of us at Grace have already started knitting, crocheting, quilting and
tying fleece to make blankets to send to children in shelters and elsewhere
at the Mexican/American border. Finished products will be collected at the
September 29 event, but keep working, because we can send more later.
Making the blankets:
Use cotton or synthetic fabrics so blankets are washable. Recommended
sizes are: 30”x40”, 36”x52”, or 50”x65”. However, any size will be accepted.
Partners:
We are working with Art Division, a non-profit organization which began The Blanket Project as a
“craftivist” response to what is happening in the Southwest. They will be giving the blankets to Border
Angels, another volunteer non-profit to distribute to the children. While Art Division works primarily
with disadvantaged youth through visual arts, Border Angels advocates for human rights, humane
immigration reform, and social justice with a special focus on issues related to the US-Mexican border.
