Traffic problems that have beenbuilding up for years can now besolved over a weekend*

With Nobels-Kline.LM

The Nobels-Kline Bridge, the brainchild of European engineering, is theanswer to many of America's traffic problems.Because it provides instant relief from congested traffic in less than 20percent of the time it normally takes to construct a bridge. And with anabsolute minimum of congestion during the construction process.Traditional solutions to traffic problems, such as tunnels and overpasses, require a year or more to construct. And during construction, detours andsingle-lane traffic create even bigger headaches. Which causes manypeople to wonder what's worse : the cure or the disease. But the Nobels-Kline Bridge requires only about 3 months, from the timeyou order it until it's ready for use. The bridge is constructed off-site, erec-ted within hours after it's delivered, and traffic is inconvenienced for onlya matter of a weekend, not a matter of months or years. The technology is even so sophisticated that foundation work can alsobe done during off-hours, and covered up during rush traffic times.Although many have remained in permanent use around the world, theNobels-Kline Bridge is also designed to be portable, allowing owners torelocate the bridge again and again as traffic patterns change over aperiod of years.AND ABOVE ALL IT'S AS SAFE AND SUBSTANTIAL AS A TRADITIONALBRIDGE.Nobels-Kline, Ltd., a joint venture of two of the world's leading steel com-panies, is privileged to offer this revolutionary concept in traffic control forthe first time ever in this country. We encourage you to spend a few minutes reading this brochure. And weinvite your inquiry as to how the Nobels-Kline Bridge might undo over aweekend what's been building up for years.

Congested intersection at Ant-werp, Belgium, before bridgewas erected.

Delivery of bridge componentsbegins on Friday evening.

Erection begins at once.

Work continues day and night,in accordance with a carefullyprepared time schedule.

The same intersection on Sun-day morning, 38 hours later. The four-lane, 820 foot bridgehas been opened to traffic.

At Antwerp, an intersection isbridged over the weekend. Thesame thing has been success-fully accomplished a number oftimes — at Brussels, Diegem,Ghent, Caracas, Cairo, Teheran. And now this remarkable tech-nique is available in the UnitedStates, as well. From Nobels-Kline, Ltd.

Traffic problems that formerlytook years to solve can now behandled in a matter of hours.

No matter how difficult the site,a solution can be found withTHENOBELS-KLINEBRIDGE

Constructionand propertiesFoundationConcrete footings can be pre-

or cast in place, depen-ing on the soil conditions.

When required, the foundationsan be supported by piles.oundations are installed prior3 erection at a time that does

not disrupt traffic. They can beplaced below grade and co-vered, allowing traffic to passon and over them until they areuncovered for erection.

Portal framesA portal frame is composed ofa floor beam and two columns.Rocker-type portals and fixedportals are installed alternately.

>rexpansion joints are provided

over the rocker frames. A fixedframe is formed by means oftie-rods interconnecting thefloor beam and the foundation.

The height of the portal framewill depend on the requiredheadroom under the structure. The floor beam is designed tosuit the number of traffic lanes.

componentsare standardized girders.

They are fabricated in largeseries, with the aid of sophis-ticated techniques, and areavailable in lengths of 80 feet, which can be arranged to ac-commodate various spans. The

top flange is an orthotropicplate supported at regular in-tervals by diaphragms. All thedeck components are identicaland interchangeable. They are6 feet in width, so that twosuch girders form a trafficlane. Combinations comprisingtwo, three, four or more lanesare possible. The structuralconnections have been care-fully designed to permit rapiderection.

Parapet componentsThese are also all identical andform integral units of a modularconstruction system. They per-form multiple functions : servingas a curb, gutter, and parapetwith guard rail. If desired, aservice walkway or a safetywalkway for pedestrians maybe added. Enamelled decorativepanels harmonizing with thecolor of the steel are available. The firm, clear-cut lines givethe bridge an attractive ap-pearance that blends well withcontemporary urban environ-ments. It is advisable to installa central barrier with curbs onbridges carrying several trafficlanes and used by traffic travel-ling in both directions.

Roadway surfacingThe wearing surface on theroadway is applied in the shopso the bridge is immediatelyready for use by traffic as soonas erection is complete. Thissurfacing consists of a layer ofquartz-filled epoxy resin whichis highly wear-resistant, canwithstand impact blows, andpossesses high skidding resis-tance. It is satisfactory at bothtropical and subfreezing tempe-ratures,

JointsThe longitudinal joints are filledwith resilient strips of a specialshape. Expansion movementsare accommodated by foamstrips.

SpansThe standardized componentscan be erected as cantileveredgirders. Brackets which can beattached to the ends of thegirder components are availa-

This makes it possible toonstruct spans ranging in

v length from about 50 feet to^10 feet without having to mo-

jify the modular constructionf mits at all.

Special formsof constructionIt is possible to use the samebasic components to constructbranched roadways as well aslateral approach ramps or tobuild bridges at different levels, either crossing each other orlocated on the same alignment.Curves in the roadway aresimple to construct with spe-cial trapezoidal units which areplaced between the main gir-ders. Super elevation can beprovided on special order.

Type of steelThe bridge is constructed ofweathering steel throughout. This material contains alloyingelements which form an oxidelayer, thus protecting it fromfurther corrosion. Minimummaintenance is required, andpainting is unnecessary underordinary conditions. In addition,it is a high yield point steel (ap-proximately 50 KSI), so that asubstantial saving in designweight is achieved.

fightingif desired, the lighting of thebridge can be supplied alongwith the structure. In that case, light poles are mounted onthe central barrier or the siderailings, with incorporated wir-ing.

• Erection during a week-end

• Immediately ready tocarry traffic

• Adaptable and versatileconstruction system that canbe suited to all conditions

• Re-usable after dismantling

• Low maintenance

BRIDGEIN BRUSSELS

Deck and girder elements arefabricated in sizes convenientfor storage and handling. Inter-changeable deck and girderelements may be site-assem-bled; therefore, special trans-portation equipment and per-mits are not required.

Design and fabrication conformwith current standards of theAmerican Association of StateHighway and Transportation Of-ficials. Design live loading :HS-20.
