From the President

The Flavors of Fall F ood nourishes us and connects us. It can transcend

barriers, build friendships and sustain communities. That is why, for decades since we originated cooking on TV with Julia Child and The French Chef, WGBH has made cooking programs an integral part of our daily broadcast schedule.

Julia helped launch a generation of home cooks as well as chefs, and was eager to learn from Lidia Bastianich how to prepare a hearty risotto dish. Lidia now serves up a heaping helping of America’s diverse culinary traditions on Lidia’s Kitchen, premiering its seventh season this month. Also kicking off a new season is WGBH’s hometown star Ming Tsai. With deep roots in New

England for more than 20 years, Ming was the co-owner of Blue Ginger and is the current owner of Blue Dragon. In each episode of Simply Ming, he invites fellow chefs—such as Joanne Chang (on the cover), owner of Flour Bakery—to whip up their favorite dishes in a friendly taste-for-taste cook-off. These two series, along with Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Television, round out our lineup of local programming devoted to food and culture.

Our cooking programs, produced by WGBH’s Studio Six, give “home- cooking” a whole new meaning. “Studio Six’s James Beard award-winning food/travel programs push the envelope offering up fresh new formats, cooking styles and the best and most diverse range of talent we can find locally and from around the globe,” says WGBH Director of Lifestyle Programming Laurie Donnelly. “Ming and Lidia have been a much beloved staple for public television viewers for decades, and we are proud they are part of the WGBH family.”

Tune in to our Create channel (page 11) for even more of your favor-ite lifestyle and how-to programming all day, every day.

If our celebrity chefs aren’t enough to whet your appetite, then our annual feast will! Visit the WGBH Studios in Brighton from Thursday, Oct. 10 through Sunday, Oct. 13 for The Taste of WGBH Food & Wine Festival. To prepare for this annual four-day culinary community event, now in its eighth year, WGBH staff reached out to 50 Boston-area cultural associations to make sure the cuisine from each culture is authentic and endorsed by people who know it best. The festival also provides an opportunity for students at Cambridge Culinary School to log hours toward their culinary degrees, all while working alongside some of the best chefs in the area.

October is a month to savor the flavors of fall. Please join us in person, on air or online to celebrate this tantalizing season with good friends and great food.

Healing Through MusicMany military personnel in the United States suffer from post- traumatic stress, but creative expe-riences can help support them in their healing process. Witness how a group of professional artists working with veterans and their families help them share personal stories of surviving a war and returning home through lyrics and

song. This special concert celebrates the power of music to raise awareness and release pain. Songwriting with Soldiers Fri, 10/25 at 10pm on WGBH 2

Next-Generation TransportationImagine a world in which cars no longer require human drivers. But making such a fundamental change in the way people travel raises an unprecedented set of technological, engineering, regulatory and legal

challenges. Nova tracks the people and the possibilities behind the biggest innovation in transporta-tion since automobiles replaced horses. How long will it be until we become passengers in our own cars? It might be sooner than you think.Nova/Look Who’s Driving Wed, 10/23 at 9pm on WGBH 2

Bringing You the WorldWorld Channel tells stories that humanize complex issues. World shares the best of public media in news, documentaries and fact-based informational programming that help us understand conflicts, movements and cultures

that may be distinct from our own. World’s original content offers a national platform to filmmakers examining issues too often ignored by mainstream media. These emerging and master filmmakers spotlight a diversity of voices, telling stories not heard elsewhere. World has won a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and numerous national honors—including an RTNDA Kaleidoscope Award, a Media for a Just Society Award, two Lesbian and Gay Journalist Awards, a Gracie and an Asian American Journalists Award. Carried by 159 partner stations in markets representing almost 66% of US TV house-holds, World can also be experienced via WorldChannel.org and social media platforms. In addition to programs commemorating National Hispanic Heritage Month, World premieres two films about people with disabilities.

Undocumented and UndauntedFollow the lives of three students in Georgia caught up in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. Their state has banned them from attending its top public universities and from qualifying for in-state tuition at any other

public college. Through the stories of Alejandro, Silvia and Aldo, see what it’s like living at a time when anti-immi-grant sentiment is growing. This docu-mentary goes beyond the media’s por-trayal of “Dreamers” and humanizes the experience of undocumented students, their families and communities.America ReFramed/The UnafraidTue, 10/1 at 8pm

Journey into HistoryTwenty-five history stu-dents travel from the Alamo to Springfield, Illinois, on a quirky 2,000-mile quest to honor Abraham Lincoln, who challenged the US-Mexican War as a young congressman. Their goal is to build a Day of the Dead altar at the State Capitol—and to ask a museum to return the prosthetic leg of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the Mexican leader whose army successfully defeated the Texas rebels at the Alamo. With humor and humility, these students raise questions about identity, national borders and collective memory.Local, USA/25 Texans in the Land of Lincoln Mon, 10/7 at 9pm

Solving the PuzzleMeet Tariq Ali, the young Rubik’s Cube champion whose own life mirrors the puzzles that he deftly solves. Tariq began speed-cubing when he was 11, the same year his 16-year-old sister tragically took her own life. As a way to pro-

cess the tragedy, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, with each side of the cube as a puzzle of his own identity: a Muslim of mul-tiracial background rejected from a world that doesn’t accept him as he is. Eventually he finds a way to honor his sister while sharing his passion with others. Local, USA/Tariq’s Cube Mon, 10/14 at 9pm

Hidden BrillianceAn estimated 6.5 million people in America are described as “intellectually disabled.” This documentary from award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib chal-lenges perceptions of intelligence by examining the lives of three pioneering young American adults with intellectual disabilities—Micah, Naieer and Naomie—as they navigate high school, college and the workforce. Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper con-textualizes the lives of these central characters through the emotional per-sonal story of his son Jesse, as the film unpacks the shameful and ongoing track record of intelligence testing in the US.America ReFramed/Intelligent Lives Tue, 10/22 at 8pm

A Chance to DanceIn this intimate verité documentary, a group of kids from ages 5 to 15 reveals what it’s like to live with a variety of physical and developmental challenges. Alexandria, Jake, Caitlin and Veronica struggle to be included in a world that largely avoids them. But their devoted parents seek out opportunities for them to feel valued, including a unique after-school dance program in Queens, NY. There, the kids join with teenage volunteer helpers with an ambitious goal: a spring recital. In the process, they create a warm, inclusive environment too often absent in our world.America ReFramed/Perfectly Normal for Me Tue, 10/29 at 8pm

Boston’s Local NPR®

W ith more than 100 colleges and universities located in Massachusetts, higher education has a major impact on the state’s economy, demo-

graphics and culture. To give it the attention it deserves, WGBH News created On Campus, a public media initiative focused on the higher education indus-try, capturing distinct voices of students, faculty, administrators and thought leaders.

Under the leadership of WGBH News Senior Editor Ken Cooper, veteran journalists—including Managing Editor and Correspondent Kirk Carapezza and Assistant Producer Esteban Bustillos—explore nationwide trends in

higher education with a local angle. Because the WGBH News education team has an in-depth knowledge of the beat, On Campus stories are fre-quently heard nationally on NPR.

Carapezza, who helped to launch the desk in 2013, said it’s been an adventure. “Over the past six years, our reporting has taken us all over the

country and across the globe—from Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, to Missoula, Montana, and Cologne, Germany,” he said. “No matter where you go, the higher education industry is a fertile ground to find stories that cut to the heart of the way we think, learn, live and work.”

On Campus has led news coverage of some of the biggest higher educa-tion stories of the year. Carapezza and Bustillos covered each day of the feder-al trial in which plaintiffs contended that Harvard discriminates against Asian American students in its admissions process. The team was also on hand to provide news and analysis when US federal prosecutors charged 50 wealthy individuals in a college admissions cheating scandal known as “Varsity Blues.”

Trumpet TitanPerformer-composer Wynton Marsalis was born to make music. At age 6, he got his first trumpet, and by age 17 he became the youngest musician ever to be admitted to Tanglewood’s prestigious Berkshire Music Center. Join Eric Jackson

as he celebrates the jazz legend’s birthday—on Oct. 18, 1961—with a special program devoted to Marsalis’ extensive body of work.Sun, 10/20 at 9pm

On Campus has also been tracking the shuttering of small private colleges, a national trend that has affected Massachusetts with the closure of Mount Ida and Newbury College, the merger of Wheelock College with Boston University and the uncertain future of Hampshire College.

This month, the On Campus team plans to report about the rising number of college students experiencing mental health problems. In a weeklong series culminating in the monthly radio program On Campus Radio, the team will cover how colleges across the country are grappling with increased rates of depression, anxiety and greater demand for mental health services.

On Campus Radio airs on 89.7 FM at 8pm on the last Sunday of each month. For regular On Campus updates, listeners are encouraged to subscribe to the On Campus Radio podcast via iTunes and Stitcher and tune in to 89.7 FM or visit wgbhnews.org.

Back in the Swing of ThingsBy Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

O nce we hit October, the music scene in and around Boston is in full swing. The number of concerts and events of every size and combination is

simply astounding, and while WCRB cannot focus on every single one of the fine concerts, we do urge our listeners and supporters to experience the trea-sures available.

This is the perfect month to tune in on weekend nights to WCRB, on your radio or online for our two cornerstone series: the Boston Symphony Orchestra live from Symphony Hall, Saturdays at 8pm, and WCRB In Concert, Sundays at 7pm.

No other radio station in the country produces as many broadcasts of its local orchestra as we do of the Boston Symphony, and this partnership is one of the highlights of what we do. Join host Ron Della Chiesa, and have a front row seat every Saturday night—see the complete schedule of concerts below.

WCRB In Concert is our weekly visit with more than 20 local ensembles and presenters, with the best of the concerts available in the region. Hosted by the WCRB on-air team and executive-produced by Brian McCreath, WCRB In Concert is the perfect way to sample what you may have missed or to hear that special concert once more. A complete schedule of WCRB In Concert is below.

To make the month even better, spend more of it with WCRB.

What’s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston

E very Tuesday WCAI taps the talents of four local writers to create A Cape Cod Notebook, a collection of poignant, funny and insightful essays

representing the unique voices of the communities we serve. In this piece, writer Mary Bergman, now living on Nantucket, pauses to contemplate

her last swim of the season:I have to accept that fall is here. The past

couple of years I have tried, by sheer force of will, to extend summer to late October. Columbus Day arrives, and winter coats are in the windows of the shops that are still open.

There are a few milestones that come between September 21 and my eventual acceptance of fall. There’s the last night I sleep with the windows open. There’s the opening

of the blanket chest to add another quilt on the bed. I tell myself it’s just for one night, and that maybe it will be warmer tomorrow. There are the first leaves on the ground, one at a time to begin with, then entire trees cast spooky silhouettes in the streetlights. There are the streetlights that are still on in the morning as I make my way to work.

Hardest for me to accept is that last swim of the summer. You never know for sure which swim will be your last. When the water is warmer than the air, it’s usually a good indicator that the season for swimming is nearing its natural end.

There’s a point where you stop going in not because you want to but because you want to prove to yourself that you can. A daily dip can transition to an endurance exercise without you even noticing it.

One evening on Brant Point, I walk between the high and low water marks and listen to the lapping waves, interspersed with the sounds of a carpenter’s pressurized nail gun boarding up one last window. It echoes across the harbor. The 5:30 ferry rounds the point and catches the long rays of sun, its huge hull transformed by the otherworldly white light.

It rained heavily all day, and clouds still linger low on the horizon. Now the light is going fast. Another beach day, another last swim, stolen.

Read or listen to “The Last Swim” at capeandislands.org/post/last-swim and explore additional essays at capeandislands.org/topic/cape- cod-notebook#stream/0. Tune in to A Cape Cod Notebook Tuesdays at 8:45am and 5:45pm at capeandislands.org.
