With a population of more than 100 million people, Mexico isthe most populous Spanish-speaking country. It has been shapedby ancient indigenous civilizations, European colonialism, andimmigration, as well as by its proximity to the United States.
The Mayan city of Tulum, situated on a cliff overlookingthe Caribbean, was a major port from about 1200 until theSpaniards arrived in the early 1500s. The Mayan civilizationdates from 750 B.C., and includes ancient cities throughoutsouthern Mexico, including the Yucatan Peninsula, andparts of Central America. Today many people in theseareas speak one of approximately 30 languages anddialects that developed from ancient Maya.
