Welshpool Basketball Association
On Sunday 10th December the Welshpool Basketball Association held
their Grand Final Day for the 2017 “All Ages competition”. It was a great day
with many spectators coming along to cheer on our finalists.
First up we had our Senior teams, Well done to Purple who took out this year’s
Premiers. Purple (59) to Yellow (25). MVP went to Dylan Angwin and Dulcie Barlow and player of the day
went to Josh Bassett.
The Intermediate game was very close with some great teamwork on display. Black team ended up taking the
win with Black (26) to White (21). MVP went to Joe Platt and Ruby Lane, player of the day to Hazel Kerrison-
Male, and most improved player for the season to Morgan Cook.
Well done to all of the Junior players this year, many of whom made the jump from the Minis competition
which is a big step. Our Junior Premiers were Pink (27) to Black (10). MVP went to Darby Taylor and Charli
Rees, player of the day was Mylie Taylor, and most improved for the season went to Callum Jones.
Our Minis competition this year had many new players joining and was great to see their improvements over
the season. The Grand Final sure was a close one with many parents on the edge of their seats right up to the
final siren. In the end Silver took the win, Silver (9) to Orange (8).
Congratulation to everyone involved on another fun and successful season. We look forward to coming back
next August by which time the brand new stadium floor will be complete.

Welshpool Op Shop As many of our readers are aware the Op Shop and Nursery are subsidiaries of the Welshpool and District Advisory
Group.
This facility is staffed by volunteers who we must acknowledge and thank, for without them it would be impossible to
open our doors.
Of course, without donations by the public there would be nothing to sell. Have you ever wondered what happens to
your pre-loved goods?
Every item of clothing that comes in to the Op Shop gets sorted into various categories, i.e. Ladies, Mens, Boys, Girls,
Babies, Summer, Winter, etc. The list goes on. Every item donated is placed for sale in the Op Shop, however, as you
can imagine, the volume at times becomes enormous. If an item of clothing remains unsold after a couple of months it
is then replaced by the newer items. It is important to note that none of these items gets thrown away, but instead
donated to Life Line who really appreciates all the items. All household and general items remain until sold.
We would take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support of this facility. We purchased this building from
Murray Goulburn in 2013 and we make our final payment in August 2018. This along with the Rural Transaction Centre
adds another valuable asset to the town of Welshpool.
After this final payment is made, it will then enable us to continue donating to, and supporting the various
organisations that exist in our area.

Welshpool Golf Club The year has certainly gone very quickly – we must all be getting a little older, anyhow from everyone at the
golf club we wish all a very Merry Christmas and hopefully a bright and Happy New Year.
Results for the last period are:
Tuesdays – Pappy Pope, David Bligh and Brian MacPherson
Ladies Wednesdays – Rachael Brown, Trish Latch, Mary Conley and the December monthly medal winner
Jeanette Swann
Fridays chicken runs – Harry Barlow, Gary Brown, Brian MacPherson and the ham award to Dan Conley
Saturdays Mens – Gary Brown, Brian MacPherson (twice) and Alan Hayes
Sundays mixed days – Harry Barlow, Tom Welsh and Paul Delaney
Also on Sunday the 17th our Annual breakup sponsored by the fines tin was a huge success with everyone
enjoying the free food and beverages in copious quantities. Prior to all the frivolity we played a three
person 18 hole ambrose event. The team of Pappy Pope/ Glenda Burley/ Lois Pope won the day with a
score of net 59 of a handicap of 15. Runners up were Paul and Jen Delaney and Peta Barlow 60 1/3 (9 2/3).
Nearest the pins were a bit of a mixed bag with some of the balls not even hitting the greens. Winners
though were for the men – 3rdMerv Lowe, 6th Harry Barlow, 8th Dan Conley, 12th Alan Hayes, 15th Gary
Brown, 17th Graham English. For the Ladies – 3rd, 6th and 15th Rachael Brown, 12th& 17th Peta Barlow.
On Sunday the 10th of December the inaugural Pat Carroll Memorial Plate in a Stableford format where
teams of four participated and the best three scores counting towards the final score. The winning team
was Welshpool 1 of Paul Delaney/ Pappy Pope/ Gary Brown/ Bob Easton. A Grade winner was Gary
Shandley of Mirboo North Club and B Grade was Graham English.
NTP’s went to – 6th Bob Easton, 8th and 17th Brian MacPherson and 15th Alan Hayes.
On Monday 11th Paul Delaney undertook a marathon golf session by playing from dawn to dusk. During this
period Paul played 110 holes (6rounds of 18 plus two more holes) to register an average score of 85 5/6 per
round. He covered by walking only, in excess of 33 kilometres.
This great effort was achieved to raise funds for paediatric brain cancer research and Ronald MacDonald
House and to help a young sufferer in Aaron Tanner of Toora whose father Craig has walked from Eden in
New South Wales to Melbourne and finally back to Toora. The culmination of these efforts have raised
nearly $30,000 and they would like to thank everyone who in some way or another helped towards this
great cause.
Our next major event is the Betta Holes 18 hole 4BBB Stableford on January 7th so get your entries in now.
He who has the fastest golf cart never has a bad lie.

Port Welshpool & District Maritime Museum
Port Welshpool & District Maritime Museum remembers Christmas………. As the days roll on and we get closer to Christmas, let’s take time to remember the good old days when Christmas was less commercialised. When we had a “real” Christmas tree and the pine tree was the smell we knew that went with Christmas, Santa, presents and holidays. It was the time of giving. “IF” you asked for a particular something you were told you would have to wait to see what Santa brought you, and didn’t that seem a world away, but wait we did. As children we looked forward to the Christmas School holidays that seemed to take so long to come around but when
they arrived seemed to last forever. All that fun in the sun and the memories of sunburn and the cures, tomato, vinegar
or cold tea just to mention a few. Don’t know how much curing they did but you know one thing, they came with pain!!
We all have memories.
The school year finished with a school concert held in the Port Welshpool Hall. We sang, we danced and we practiced
for months to get it all just right, with Mrs. Roberts at the piano directing our every step. “Red Sails in the Sunset”,
being one of our productions with the loan of a red sail from local fisherman Myles Thorburn. We were so proud as we
performed on stage looking down to our even prouder parents.
During the evening a presentation of a book was made by the head master, to congratulate each child on their
achievement during the year. How special we felt.
The mothers club served the supper. All made with the help of great cooks, being a mum or a grandparent, with their
special recipe. The Mothers Club being the mothers of the students and a very important part of the school. As it was
these dedicated mothers that raised money through cake stalls and raffles so these special days could be enjoyed.
The night was made more exciting when the big double doors at the end of the hall opened and Santa’s helper walked
through carrying a bag of small gifts. The largest Christmas tree that could be found, beautifully decorated with a star at
the top took pride of place in the corner of the stage. Santa’s helper seated under the tree, called your name, and you
shyly walked up to receive your gift.
With the school year finished we then had a short wait for Christmas day. We waited all year for that much wanted gift,
we hoped Santa had room in his sleigh. On the list could be a bike, special doll or toy car. The leading question always
seemed to be “had we been good all year?” of course we had, well, maybe just a little bit naughty, but Santa was very
forgiving.
We all know Santa has many helpers. One being a helper that was driven around on Christmas Eve to every house at
Port Welshpool, with children waiting eagerly to tell Santa’s helper they had been good and express their Christmas
wish. Santa’s helper would give them a bag of lollies each and tell them he would see what he could do, no promises
made. With the sound advice to go the bed early and their surprise would be under the tree in the morning.
For these wonderful childhood memories of Christmas Eve, thanks go to Alex Busk and Jim Gable.
The Committee and Members of the Port Welshpool & District Maritime Museum
would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and Health and Happiness for 2018
