Increased Stress During Holidays It has been known for some time that holidays are a special time for so many people. However, it has also been known for some time that the holidays are not so pleasant for many and stress increases greatly for certain individuals. In a study by Greenburg, Quinlin and Rosner it was shown that the holidays add an additional layer of stress to the normal stress that people experience normally. The objectives of this study were to explore stress during the holidays: the proximate and most important causes of stress, how holiday stress differs from stress at other times of the year, and what – if anything – people do differently during the holiday season to manage their stress. Their findings were as follows: Holiday stress has a particular impact on women, who take charge of many of the holiday celebrations, particularly the tasks related to preparing meals and decorating the home. Women are more likely than men to report an increase of stress during the holiday season. In addition, they have a harder time relaxing during the holidays and are more likely to fall into bad habits to manage their stress, like comfort eating. Holiday stress has an impact on lower middle-income individuals. This group feels the weight of stress from work plus the seasonal rush to find time to get everything done. In addition, their worries about money are heightened by the commercialism of the season and the pressure to spend a lot of money.

Emotions run high during the holidays: people in the United States report feelings of love, happiness, and high spirits. The most important aspects of the holidays are the opportunities to connect or reconnect with friends and family. People in the United States are more likely to feel their stress increases rather than decreases during the holidays. The holidays can be a hectic time for many, and a lack of money, a lack of time, and the hype and commercialism of the season causes increased stress for people in this country. During the holidays, stress takes on a different character than at other times of the year. Men and women alike feel a duty to make the holidays the best they can for their families.

Hopefully each of us will use the time during the holidays to enjoy a little time off to be with family and friends and put our emphasis on the most important things. We are such a blessed people with much to be thankful for. Especially, may we remember the spiritual blessings that come to us daily through Jesus the Christ. Happy Holidays. God bless.

It’s hard to believe, but 2017 is almost gone. It seems like the older I get, the faster the days go by. It’s at this time of the year that we start to do some reflecting and some planning. I believe that is healthy. It’s important to look back on the year and pinpoint successes and failures. It’s also important to plan for things to come. Our 2017 theme for the year has been “Committed.” Our elders challenged us to be committed in four areas: to the Word, to love, to growth and to living right. Consider your commitment level to each of these areas. Do you read your Bible? Do you make time in your day for some quiet reflection, letting God speak to you through His Word? Do you dig deep into scripture and look for a stronger understanding of what is being said? If not, I urge you to start today. The encouragement found in Scripture cannot be matched by words of man. Do you love people? Do you want the best for people? Are you compassionate? Do you care about others well-being? Are you forgiving? Do you love like Jesus loves? Love is a word that is used somewhat flippantly from time to time. People know if you love them. Your actions prove whether you are a person committed to love or not. The Bible says that “God is love and in Him there is no darkness at all.” I urge us all to be committed to love. Are you growing? Josh, like a lot of kids, is proud that he is getting taller. I see him stretching when he is around Shay or Mary Beth. He wants to grow past them. But that is just physical. My prayer for him is that he will grow spiritually. That should be the goal for us all. Our church family is growing. What a blessing it is to be associated with so many wonderful people. But if I, or you, the individual isn’t growing spiritually, we are doing ourselves, and our church a disservice. Sometimes we find ourselves in a “spiritual rut,” just kind of going through the motions. We need to all be determined to grow in our spiritual walk with God. It has to be a priority. When I grow, or you grow, we ALL grow. Are you living right? Are you making smart decisions? Are you choosing good things to be involved in? How is your choice of friends? We live in a world that has a lot of negativity. We don’t have to contribute to the negativity. We can choose to have a Christian attitude in all things. We can say no to things that we shouldn’t do. We can say no to going places that we shouldn’t go. We can model Christian principles to our family, friends and neighbors. We have to be committed to this lifestyle. We all make mistakes. Learn from them. Don’t repeat them. Obey God’s commands in all things. 2018 is just a few days away. May we all be committed to making it better than 2017.

Church Safety

PURPOSE: To communicate with congregations about plans and procedures for assuring safety for those attending services at Henderson Church of Christ

With recent events that have occurred during public events, including church activities, the Elders feel that it is important to provide information so that you will know what is being done to assure your safety.

Our Safety Committee, which is led by Todd Humphry, is in the process of developing procedures so that we will be prepared in case of situations that require evacuation, lock down, and threats in, and around, our facilities. While some of these situations are very unlikely, as long as there is a chance of something occurring, we want to be prepared.

1. SCENARIOS TO CONSIDER

a. Fire – Evacuation

b. Lock Down – Outside Threat

c. Medical – Medical Personnel

d. Bomb Threat

e. Weather

f. Intruder/Active Shooter

2. SAFETY TEAM - Almost 30 of our members are part of our safety team and are involved in monitoring our entrances for all services.

3. BUILDING ACCESS

a. Almost 30 of our members are part of our safety team and are involved in monitoring our entrances for all services.

b. Some doors remain locked at all times; Some will be open but locked when the services begin

i. Once Sunday School begins, all but three entrances will be locked

ii. Once Wed. 5:45 service begins, all but three entrances will be locked

c. Three entrances will remain unlocked during services with a member of our Safety Team monitoring:

Page 8: Wishing everyone a happy and blessed holiday season!hendersoncoc.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/... · Wishing everyone a happy and blessed holiday season! 240 White Avenue Phone:

i. Commons Entrance at Drive-Thru

ii. Main Street Entrance to Auditorium

iii. East entrance facing parking lot and Senior Citizen’s Center

d. Doors will be unlocked no more than one hour before times for services to begin (In the past we have left the building for hours at a time while unoccupied

4. COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

a. Walkie Talkies

b. Text Alert System (Future)

c. Improvements to Bell/Alarm System (Future)

5. IMPROVEMENTS

a. Magnetic Locks will be installed on all doors entering directly into this auditorium. We will be able to close and lock them with one switch should the need arise

b. Office Access – Doors entering the Office/Activity Center will be fitted with new doors with a camera and access controlled in the office

c. Security Cameras – We are in the process of having cameras installed inside and outside of the building

6. HOW CAN YOU HELP?

a. Observe and Report any suspicious activity but in doing this, we never want to make visitors feel unwelcomed

b. Be patient when doors that you might usually enter are locked – It will be inconvenient for some

c. Have your own plan – If in Auditorium:

i. Locate nearest exits – To prepare for evacuation

ii. Think about how you would respond should we have an intruder who wishes to do us harm:

1. Run

2. Hide

3. Fight

d. Pray for safety and welfare of church family

e. Plan for 5th Sunday Contribution on December 31 – Contribution, which usually goes to building fund, will be used to help with the cost of security cameras and doors ($40,000)
