    Reading

H You are going to read an article. For questions 1-8, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits best according to the text.

'Hollywood' is a household name. This small district of Los Angeles, California is the centre of the American film industry and the source of over 2.6 billion yearly cinema ticket sales. Most of the films we watch, whether they are blockbuster action films or low-budget dramas. come straight out of Hollywood. But have you ever heard of 'Bollywood'? 'Bollywood' is the name given to the Hindi language film industry based in Mumbai, India. Contrary to popular belief, it far outperforms Hollywood. Last year alone, over 1000 films were produced and 4 billion cinema tickets were sold, showing that Indian cinema is far more powerful than people think.

Many likely Bollywood fans are often concerned that they will not be able to understand the language used in the films. But there is no need to worry. Although the scripts have historically been written in Hindi, more and more films use the English language, showing India's respect for the languages that make up its culture. You will also find that

I most films come with English language subtitles. The 'language barrier' shouldn't stop a viewer from missing out on some first-class films.

So what do you get out of a Bollywood film? It is very difficult to define a film as belonging to a certain category, because there is no such thing as a typical Bollywood film. Indians tend to describe the films by using the Hindustani

word, 'Masala' (meaning 'spice mixture'). The plots sometimes focus on the drama of a love triangle, but they can also be packed with laugh-out-Ioud comedy or edge-of-your-seat action. The only guarantee is that a Bollywood film won't end without several catchy song and dance routines.

Many Bollywood films are over three hours long. Some people might think that this is too long, but there is a good explanation. You would be forgiven for thinking it's due to complicated storylines but the film companies say it's far simpler than that. They say the aim is not to draw in bigger audiences, but to give you, the audience, your 'money's worth'. If you are going to spend good money on a ticket, the film should be exciting, funny, scary, dramatic, musical. .. Anything you want! .

Like in Hollywood, there is no shortage of aspiring young actors and actresses hoping to get a role in the next 23 blockbuster. They set off to Mumbai with dreams of becoming stars. Big shot movie producers and casting agents are

always looking out for new talent. Of course, the vast majority never 'make it big', but there are a few exceptions. India has its own Brad Pitts and Angelina Jolies - spectacular actors who make up all-star casts and ensure you have a truly enjoyable viewing experience!

Shilpa Shetty is the perfect example of a Bollywood megastar. A picture of beauty and raw acting talent, she has achieved success beyond the borders of India, most notably in the UK following her appearance on the 'Celebrity Big Brother' TV series. Since then she has turned down roles in several British TV shows. Instead, she has returned to Mumbai and continues to shoot films in the land that made her a star.

Bollywood is not just for the Indian audience. Although it took a long time to become popular in other countries, Bollywood is hugely popular in Russia and Eastern Europe. And although audience numbers in Western Europe and the Americas are only now growing, it has already taken Africa and Asia by storm. As world cinema changes, don't get left behind. Once you get into Bollywood, you'll never want to stop watching.

During recent years, people have become obsessed with their weight. The desire by people to look like their favourite movie star or supermodel has prompted an almost endless list of celebrity-endorsed diets. Actress l odie Foster says 'Yes! ' to the Beverly Hills Diet, Kylie Minogue uses the Mo ntignac Diet and Sarah-Michelle Gellar even gives a thumbs up to a Cabbage So up Diet! But no nutritional programme has gained quite so much attention as the world-famous Atkins Diet.

Personalities who have started the diet include former 'power couple' Brad Pit! and l ennifer Aniston, superstar Catherine Zeta-lones and Sarah lessica Parker. I I I I Former American President and Vice President, Bill Clinton and AI Gore, are both said to have used the diet in o rder to lose a few kilos. 'Atkins' is unique in that it is equally popular amongst both sexes. So what is 'Atkins', why does it have such a high-profile following and, more importantly, is it safe?

The basic idea of the diet is quite simple. Atkins dieticians claim that carbohydrates are the reason we put on weight. ru . Our bodies burn carbohydrates first. So, the Atkins scientists say that if we cut down on these carbohydrates, our bodies will search for other forms of energy to burn instead. The next thing our bodies want to burn is the thing we hate most - fat! When our body burns fat, we natura lly become less hungry and, accordingly, we start to lose weight.

I The first phase in the Atkins Nutritional Approach requires participants to lower the daily amount of carbohydrates they eat. A diet should include reasonable amounts of meat, fish, cheese, eggs, nuts and salad vegetables. While a nice, lean steak is recommended, ' high-carb' food such as rice , potatoes, pasta and bread are restricted. rn . This consists of the full range of minerals and vi tamins we all need as part of a healthy diet.

After the first two weeks, dieters are told to increase their carbohydrate intake of roughly 5 grams a day. This process is meant to continue until a person has found a level of carbohydrate intake that is suitable for them. rn. Atkins says that this should be a long-term commitment, because, as with any other diet, a return to old eating habits will bring back those lost kilos.

Not everybody thinks Atkins is the best solution to lose weight though. Several nutrition ists have said that the diet restricts a healthy balance of fruit and vegetables which they think is necessary. rn . It is also thought that the diet is too low in fibre, which is mainly found in bread, cereals and potatoes. There is large scientific agreement that lack of fibre can cause bad stomach problems.

However, an Atkins spokesman denies claims made about fl aws in the diet. He agrees that the intake of fruit and vegetables is decreased at the beginning of the diet, but it is still a healthy amount that is slowly increased over a period of weeks. Atkins is also quick to encourage dieters not to neglect fibre. ~. This ensures that a person 's nutritional needs are met.

A number of scientific studies back the claim that Atkins is a great way to lose weight quickly. rn . Life in the limelight is very likely the reason that celebrities choose to use this diet. But, if you are considering trying the diet , remember some things; always consult a doctor and never look for a 'quick fix'. Atkins is only successful if it is well-planned, nutritious and includes regular exercise.

F Many scientists believe the human body is reliant on different minerals and vitamins and should not miss out on them. @] Carling Weekend, England The Carling Festival has been part of

British cultural history for nearly 50 years. Originally a jazz music festival, its main focus is now rock music.

Up until 1999, the festival was based in the city of Reading. An ever-increasing demand for tickets led event organisers to establish a sister festival in the northern city of Leeds. Ever since then, the Carling Weekend has become a phenomenal success, with combined sales of over 150,000 tickets sold per year.

Every year, the festival gates are opened for the August Bank Holiday Weekend. The bright midsummer sunshine helps to provide the perfect setting for a 3-day camping experience. But for those who want to avoid a weekend without life's little luxuries, day tickets are available.

The event, centred exclusively around music, attracts the world's most famous rock bands, from The Who to The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. For those who love to go mad to the sound of guitars and drums, the

The Edinburgh Festival, Scotland The Edinburgh Festival was established in 1947

and has grown to become the largest outdoor international arts and culture event in the world.

Its name is slightly misleading though. It is used as a collective term for a wide number of events, performances and festivals that last throughout the month of August.

The organisers have ensured that there is something for everyone in Edinburgh. If you are interested in music, film, reading, politics, books, dance, comedy, theatre or more, then there is surely something for you.

Of all the many celebrations, the Edinburgh Fringe is most popular amongst festival-goers. Every possible aspect of the performing arts is covered. If you like to be around others, you can watch the street entertainers, jugglers, mime artists as they perform in the city's crowded streets. If you prefer quieter surroundings, stop by one of the many small cafes or side-street theatres where you can sit and enjoy a play. Whether it is a new, independent production or one of the Ancient Greek classics, you'll find somethipg to tickle your fancy!

The good news is that there are no tickets or fees to attend the festival. However, once inside, you should note that some events might require a small payment for entry. But don't worry, it's worth every penny!

Up until recently. life was fairly uneventful. I had a normal childhood growing up in the leafy suburbs of Connecticut before heading south to study at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. While there, I fell in l0ve with medicine, southern life and, of course, a southern girl! After graduation, we soon got married and headed west where we both took up positions in 'The Hospitality State', Mississippi. We had a nice life there, but this sleepy city never quite felt like a 'home'. My wife missed her parents dearly, so we decided to movc closer to them in the electrifying and colourful home of jazz. By August 25th 2005, we were unpacked and living in New Orleans where wc felt we were meant to be. If only we had known how 'different' and 'new' this experience would be ..

Early in the morning on the 29th August, Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. Sure, hurricanes are anticipated at some point because they are famous in the south, Indeed, some even believe you're not a real man until you've lived through a hurricane. But. in reality. nothing could have prepared me for what was about to come. Think of the strongest winds you could possibly imagine and multiply this by ten. Then, add downpours of torrential rain, combined with deafening thunder and violent lightning - this could help you imagine the terrifying situation that was before us. Katrina was the new queen of extreme weather conditions and New Orleans was her kingdom.

She tore mercilessly through the city streets. destroying everything that lay in her path. The sheer destructive force of the hurricane blew out the windows of local homes. businesses and hotels. Beds, desks and other furniture could be seen flying out of windows! Catastrophic winds, coupled with vioicnt showers, eventually succeeded in destroying the city's water icvees. resulting in a huge tidal surge. Water crashed into the city with the strength of a tsunami. Under intense pressure, the city's canals burst their banks and within hours New Orleans was a city underwater.

When the eye of the storm passed and Katrina moved on, my wife and I left the fragile safety of our basement. We opened the door not to our kitchen, but to a new world. Our house was a shell; my wife broke down in tears while I stood dazed. From our 'house' in the suburbs, we witnessed the chaos the hurricane had unleashed on a once vibrant city. Suddenly it struck me that although our material possessions were gone, my wife and I were alive. That was the important thing. The city was devastated, thousands of families were separated, people were injured and helpless; we could feel sorry for ourselves or we could do something.

I immediately sent my wife and her family to Mississippi as I volunteered my services. Within an hour, the local authorities escorted me into the city. They were joincd by National Guard soldiers who took us to the Louisiana Superdome. As we opened the main doors, we were met with the sight of thousands of sick and injured evacuees.

I was joined by a small but dedicated group of volunteers. including five doctors and nurses. We began by treating the most seriously injured. Injuries varied from concuss ions (caused by falling debris from damaged buildings) to serious body wounds. Each weatherbeaten victim served as living proof that nobody had escaped the wrath of Katrina. The demand for medical care was huge. something I'd never experienced in the comfort of myoid clinic. Sometimes we wanted to complain about the unbearable conditions and at times thought of leaving altogether. The possibility of moving to a smaller venue was discussed but not realistic because we were committed to helping as many victims as possible. We opted to stay put and worked tirelessly throughout the fOllowing weeks, treating diseases related to contaminated water. hypothermia and a host of other illnesses.

Years later, I am still treating Katrina's victims and we're still clearing up the mess. The aftermath of the hurricane left a distinctive scar on our city. Some call New Orleans 'the city that people forgot to care about' but I dispute this. Sometimes I think the authorities could have done more to prevent such huge damage and loss of life but people never stopped caring. Many victims chose not to flee. In the face of a natural disaster, people helped one another. hospitals gave medical supplies, children donated pocket money and the media made public our city's pain. This unity

!'IIeither my wife nor I could believe it. We were in utter shock. We returned home after a wonderful wedding anniversary meal to discover that our little apartment had been completely emptied! From DVDs and televisions to jewellery and family photographs, all our possessions were gone.

We knocked on our neighbour's door only to fmd that the same had happened to them. If we lived in a bad area this wouldn't have been so shocking, but we live in such a peaceful, safe neighbourhood; we never expected burglary would be a problem.

Of course we rang the police immediately. They arrived at the scene of the crime within minutes and were extremely helpful and efficient. Officers took our statements while forensic experts dusted for fingerprints and thoroughly examined the whole flat.

The police promised us that they would do everything they could, but we shouldn't get our hopes up. We'll try not to, but our photos were more than simple pictures, they were memories. It would mean so much if we got them back.

But the thing that really disgusts me is mugging, I fmd it so cowardly. The people who do it are nothing more than schoolyard bullies.

Recently, someone who looked half my age stopped me and told me to give him my purse or he would hurt me. I confronted the petty little criminal and warned him that if he wanted my wallet he was going to have to deal with me first! Luckily, he confirmed his weakness by running away.

When I arrived home, I rang the police only to be greeted by the same old ans"rering machine promising to return my call at a less busy time, so I just hung up.

tuckily I was strong enough to stand up for myself, but what about the poor children or the elderly? The police need to do more to stop this problem; when my wife and I have children, we don't want them brought up in an area where there is a continual threat of violence.

was on my way home when suddenly I heard footsteps behind me. Before I could turn around, someone grabbed my wrist, twisting it behind my back. The assailant whispered that if I didn't do as he said, he would hurt me. He ended up taking my phone and purse.

After the incident, I ran home and told my parents everything about the horrific experience. Unable to control my feelings, I cried until the police arrived. I spent some time answering their questions, helping them in any way possible. They were extremely friendly and said I was right to comply and behave as I did. They said it is not uncommon for these cowards to carry weapons, such as knives.

I gave as many facts as I could remember because, after the tears, I was angry and wanted justice. I was told that the details I gave sounded familiar and matched the description of a local petty criminal.

I've just got your email asking me about last summer at the cafe. Of course I can give you some information.

The cafe was called The Two Sugars. It's in the centre of town not far from your house. I worked weekday evenings from 6 to 10 and every Saturday from 9 to S.

It was an excellent cafe with a lovely warm atmosphere. Most customers were very friendly, but there were one or two that were a bit rude.

You don't get a lot of money per hour, but you make a lot more from customer's tips. If you work hard, you should be able to afford your laptop. I bought a bike from the money I earned last year!

I know you love swimming, so you could apply for a job at the local swimming pool if you don't like the cafe.

Tell me what you decide. Kate.

restaurant. My wife and I ate there last night and were very unhappy with both the service and the food.

To begin with. the service was very slow.Although we had booked the week before, we had to wait half an hour for a table. It took another half an hour before the waiter took our order.

After a further long delay, our food finally arrived, but as we began to eat, we realised that it was cold. We informed the waiter of the problem and were rudely told that this was not his problem. Furthermore, when we asked to see the manager, we were told that he would not talk tb customers under any circumstances.

I am very disappointed with the standard of service and quality of food at your restaurant. I insist on a full refund of the 90 I paid for the meal and an apology. I look forward to your prompt reply.

    Yours faithfully, BrianWillner

foreign country. Most families have at least one relative that is living or has lived abroad. I believe that at some point in their lives, everyone should try living abroad. In the first place, living abroad makes it a lot easier to learn a foreign language. Meeting people and using the native language all day every day quickly improves a learner's ability. Secondly, the experience of being away from friends and family can be very good for a person's character. Learning to be independent and do things by ourselves is a valuable lesson for us all. On the other hand, a foreign country is not for everyone. Some people need the security of a familiar environment. They might also feel homesick and miss the company of

B Without doubt, the internet has changed the way people communicate. Internet facilities like chat rooms allow us to speak to anyone at any time of the day. Are they as good as they sound, though~

Chat rooms have some obvious advantages. Firstly, we can speak to people we would not meet in everyday life. We are able to speak to someone in another country on another continent. Secondly, a chat room is not interested in how we look. Some people judge others based on their looks, but in a chat room this is not possible. However, there are also some disadvantages. To begin with, a chat room is not a private conversation. Other people can listen in and we don't always know who they are. Also. many young people spend too long sitting in front of a computer screen and need to be encouraged to make 'real' friends instead of , virtual' ones. All in all, there are both advantages and disadvantages to chat rooms. As with most things, we should be careful when using them and not use them too much.

Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to make recommendations regarding changes to the youth centre that would attract more teenager members. Cost Many teenagers have complained about the cost of the youth club. Young people do not have a lot of money to spend and are careful about where and how they spend it. To encourage newer members, it would be a good idea to reduce the cost of joining the youth club or, if possible, make it free. Activities The centre is very focused on engaging members in group sports activities. However, the choices of younger and older members differ - children tend to like gymnastiCS and dancing while teens prefer basketball or football. One solution to this problem would be to introduce several choices so that teenagers have more options and can participate in a sport they actually like. Conclusion To sum up, I am confident that if my recommendations are followed and the youth centre is made cheaper with a wide range of sporting activities, it will be successful in its goal to make itself more accessible to local teenagers.

B To: Chairman Anderson From: Alexander Hathaway Subject: Mobile Phones Date: 8th October

Introduction The purpose of this report is to assess the possibility of allowing mobile phones in the school. Positive Aspects There are many positive aspects to allowing mobile phones in the school. Firstly, mobile phones would be an excellent way for pupils to send information about lessons and homework to those who are absent so that they do not fall behind with their work. Secondly, mobile phones could be used in some lessons. Newer mobiles can record, film and even connect to the Internet. Negative Aspects Iv\obile phones could also cause problems for teachers. To begin with, pupils may use phones for cheating in exams. In addition, the phones might ring during lessons and interrupt the teacher. Pupils would concentrate more on their phones than on the teacher. Furthermore, the school would be responsible if any mobile phones were stolen during school hours. Recommendation In conclusion, there may be some advantages to allowing mobile phones in schools, but there are far more disadvantages. On the whole, I would recommend that mobile phones are not allowed in schools.
