To our 4-H Family,We recently closed the fiscal year of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation. it was a year of exciting transition that starts the Foundation on a path of strengthening relationships with our key constituents and broadening our fund development activities to support Wisconsin’s 4-H community. the highlights of the year included:

1. our executive director of development, Kristi thering-tuschen, completed her first year on the job. she met many new faces as well as got to know our long term friends.

2. the entire Bylaws and related documents were restructured to place a clear focus on fund development, trusting our colleagues at uW-extension to focus on programming.

3. an updated Memorandum of understanding with uW-extension was signed.

4. an updated board profile and expectations of board members was established.

5. We say thank you to Robert Hansen who is retiring from the board and welcome several new board members to the team.

6. new and innovative partnerships were created in fund development including the most recent partner schenck, who provided a two year audit review report.

7. the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Meat products auction experienced a dramatic growth in dollars raised.

8. our fiscal year was moved from a July 1 to June 30 year to a calendar year beginning in 2013.

the last highlight allows new board members to join the Foundation at the beginning of a fiscal year rather than mid-way through the year. as such we will have a “stub” year going from July of this year to december and then go to a full fiscal year in January. Watch our new website for financials as this transition is made. Visit www.wis4hfoundation.org to see what is already under construction today.

as i complete my term as president, i am excited for the future growth and positioning of the Foundation. i wish the new executive team well and look forward to the continued support of the Wisconsin 4-H community.

John Brunnquell president, Wisconsin 4-H Foundation

allowing youth to explore creativity and assume leadership, youth master new skills, become self-directed workers and form valuable networks that will make them highly sought-after future employees.

Testimonial:scholarship aside, i just wanted to

take a moment to thank you and all

of the 4-H folks out there for making

4-H such a great experience for

laura and for other youth. our family

has literally “lived/ate/breathed”

4-H since laura was 5 years old

and plans to continue to be involved

even after she moves on to college

next fall. the opportunities she has

found in 4-H just can’t be found

elsewhere and have given her a

solid foundation on which to build

in the future. in fact, i recently

heard an interview on public radio

that stated colleges are beginning

to take 4-H experience much more

seriously when considering youth

for college admission because of

the work ethic involved with 4-Hers.

i’ve also had a couple of laura’s

high school teachers say that they

can tell right away that a student is

a 4-Her because they step up and

take on responsibility so easily. so,

congrats to 4-H for a job well done!

darlene debruin-Hein, 4-H Mom

Raising and caring for animal projects allows youth to experience responsibility and independence. these skills are vital and prepare youth for future careers in management, sales and business.

From the desk of Secretary Ben Brancel:My career in public service has its foundation in a trip i made as a 4-H member to citizenship short

course. When i traveled with my fellow 4-Hers to Washington d.c., i was inspired by the dedication of u.s.

congressman Melvin laird. i knew at that young age i wanted to become involved. several years later, i

took another 4-H trip to national 4-H congress in Washington d.c. and this reaffirmed my commitment to

a job in public services.

after managing my family’s dairy farm for many years, i ran and was elected to the Wisconsin state

assembly. as a state Representative, i was able to represent the interests of my district at our state capitol.

When asked to serve as the secretary of agriculture, trade and consumer protection by Governor tommy

thompson and now Governor scott Walker, i accepted this challenge and great opportunity to combine my love

of agriculture with public service. i am able to hold a position that serves the entire state, from our farmers to

consumers, while continuing to farm with my family in Marquette county raising registered beef cattle.

My 4-H experiences have led me to involvement in research, education, policy development and

administration of policies to benefit agriculture. i always enjoy meeting 4-H members at fairs and events

across the state. i am consistently impressed with their drive and enthusiasm for their projects. i know i would

not be where i am today without my 4-H background and the supporters of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation.
