System Requirements

• Pentium® class notebook computers with one available CardBus slot

• Microsoft® Windows® 98SE, ME, 2000, XP

• CD-ROM drive

• Using Odyssey Client for Marvell, your computer must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.

• Using WPA function, make sure there is a WPA-enabled Access Points in the network environment.

When the adapter card is not associated with any wireless network devices, the Power/Tx LED will stay solidgreen; Rx LED will be off. When both LEDs are blinking green, the adapter card is scanning/connecting toan wireless network. When the adapter card is associated, Power/Tx LED indicates transmitting activity; RxLED indicates receiving activity.

Ejecting the Network Adapter

Please always disable the network adapter priorremoving the adapter from the PCMCIA slot. Thenetwork adapter supports hot-swappable feature soyou don’t have to power off the notebook to removethe adapter.

1. Double click the Unplug or Eject Hardware Iconresides on the Windows system tray and click Stopfrom the Unplug or Eject Hardware dialog box.

2. Click OK to confirm that you are going to stop theadapter.

If you have connected the notebook adapter to yourcomputer, please remove it first.

1. Insert the Driver and Utility CD into CD Drive.

2. A series of introduction screens will show up. It runs on Macromedia Flash. If your computerdoesn’t have the Flash player installed, pleasevisit www.macromedia.com to download the plug-in

3. Next, a Read Me screen will be brought up.Please read it through carefully, then click Next.

4. Click the button of “I accept the terms in thelicense agreement”. Click Next

Installing the Network Adapter Driver

1. Insert the Network Adapter into the PC card slot.Align the card properly.

2. When Windows 2000 recognizes the adapter, theFound New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears.Click Next.

5. Click “Browse”, browse to the X:\IOGEARGWP512\Driver\Win2k directory and click OK.

Note: X is the drive letter for user’s CD-ROMdrive.

6. The wizard will display the location of the driver.Click on the Next button.

7. The Microsoft Digital Signature Not Found dialogbox could appear at this point. A Microsoft digitalsignature is not required for the driver installation.Click “Yes” to continue.

8. After a while, the wizard will report that thehardware installation is complete. Click Finish.

The Odyssey For Marvell Utility will be installed afterthe completion of Configuration Utility.

The Odyssey Client helps the user to configure theWPA function. WPA is an implementation based on asubset of the 802.11i standard and providesenhanced security for wireless networks when usedwith the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) andthe Michael message integrity check (MIC)algorithms. Be sure there is an access pointsupports WPA in the network environment for usingthe Odyssey for Marvell utility.

1. Click on the button of GWP512 ConfigurationUtility and Odyssey Client for Mavell from MainInstallation Menu.

3. In the Destination Folder screen, you are askedto confirm the Destination Folder for theapplication software. If you would like, you maychange the destination folder to another location.Click Next.

2. The InstallShield Wizard is preparing to install theconfiguration utility. Click Next.

7. The InstallShield Wizard continues to install theOdyssey Client Manager for Marvell. TheOdyssey Client Installation Wizard windowappears. Click Next. If you don’t want to installthe Odyssey for Marvell Utility, you can clickCancel to close the installation.

16. The Odyssey for Marvell Utility icon will appear inthe system tray automatically. If the networkadapter plugged and connected with a wirelessnetwork, the Configuration Utility will launchautomatically, and showing green icon in thesystem try. If it does not launch and you cannotget wireless connection, please open theConfiguration Utility from Windows Start >Programs > IOGEAR GWP512 > IOGEARGWP512 Configuration Utility.

Verifying Driver Installation

1. Right-click mouse button on the My Computer iconon your Windows desktop, and select Propertiesfrom the pop-up menu.

2. The System Properties screen will pop-up.Under Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

3. After clicking Device Manager, the followingscreen will be shown.

Click on the + symbol in front of “Networkadapters” and see if an item labeled IOGEARGWP512 Network Adapter is visible. If you don’tsee the item below the network adapter icon buta”?” or “!” symbol is displayed, it means that thedriver installation was unsuccessful. Highlight“IOGEAR GWP512 Network Adapter”, right-clickmouse button and select “Properties”.

4. Click the General tab, if the Device Status fieldreports that “This device is working properly”, itmeans that the driver has been installedsuccessfully.

After the network adapter driver and configurationutility are installed, the TCP/IP address for thenetwork adapter must be set up in order to communi-cate with other wireless LAN access points andclients, and to have Internet access.

1. Right-click on My Network Places and selectProperties from the pop-up menu.

2. Find the “Local Area Connection” that isassociated with the Network Adapter. Right-clickon the connection and select Properties.

3. Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and clickProperties.

Note: The IP Address you assign to all computersmust be in the same IP Address range, and theSubnet Mask must be the same for all computers onyour network.

For example:If the first computer is assigned an IP Address of10.35.1.3 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0,then the second computer can be assigned an IPAddress of 10.35.1.4 with a Subnet Mask of255.255.255.0,.. etc.

4. Select “Obtain an IP address automatically”,if the network adapter will be linked to a WirelessAP providing DHCP service. Or, please click “Usethe following IP address” and input an IP addressand subnet mask. IP configuration information(DHCP or assigned IP address, Gateway and DNSserver IP addresses) is usually obtained from thecorporate IT staff.

5. After completing IP configuration information, clickOK to both “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties”and “Local Area Connection Properties” tocomplete the IP configuration.

6. Choose Start > Programs > Accessories >Command Prompt to open the DOS commandprompt window.

7. Type “ipconfig” at the D:\> prompt to determineif the TCP/IP configuration has taken effect.

1. To remove the driver from the OS, go toStart>Settings>Control Panel.

3. Under Hardware tab, click Device Manager.Double-click Network adapters. Right-click mousebutton on “IOGEAR GWP512 Network Adapter”,and choose Uninstall. Click OK to uninstall thedevice.

Network Adapter Configuration Utility

The Configuration Utility can be launched fromWindows Start -> Programs -> IOGEAR GWP512 ->IOGEAR GWP512 Configuration Utility.

After launched, the utility icon will reside on theWindows system tray and provides at-a-glancefeedback about the device’s status by changingappearance.

Status 1:The wireless network adapter is not plugged in.

• Restore: Select this option and the Utility Mainscreen will appear on the top of all Windowsapplications you have opened.

• Turn Radio off: Click the Turn Radio Off will poweroff the network adapter.

• Exit: Close the utility and the icon will exit from thesystem tray, too.

The Configuration utility is separated into sevencategories:

• Network Status: Display the status of thenetwork you are connecting to.

• Profile Manager: Display the current profile andallows you to create, modify and delete profiles.

• Site Survey: List all available network devices inrange.

• Statistics: You can view the information ofwireless receiving and transmitting data.

• Advanced: Allows you to perform advancedconfiguration.

• Admin: Allows you to import or export profiles.

• About: Shows the firmware and utility versionsand MAC address of the network adapter.

Select Profile

Displaying the name of the profile in use. Clickthe down-arrow button to select profiles youhave created previously. You may modify,create and delete profiles through the ProfileManager tab.

- Connected: Indicates the adapter isconnected with a wireless network.

- Card Unplugged: Card not plugged in, orplugged in but not recognized.

- No Connection: Card plugged in but can’t finda wireless network.

- No Radio: Card plugged in but the radio isturned off.

• Network SSID: Indicates the SSID of theconnected wireless device.

• Network Type: Indicating the current networktype the adapter uses. It could be Ad hoc orInfrastructure.

Link Information

Contains information of current connection.

• Status:

• Network BSSID: Shows the associated device’sMAC address in the form of hex digits.

• Security: Indicates whether the connected devicehas the WEP function enabled or not.

- Security OFF: It means that the connecteddevice isn’t using enable WEP function.

- WEP: It means that the connected device uses theWEP function.

• Link Speed: Current link speed.

Signal Strenth

The green color bar indicates the signal is weak orstrong. The longer the color bar,the better connection.

Channel

Display the channel in use and the dynamic diagramshows the Transmit (TX) and Receiving (RX) ratebeing monitored.

Click the checkbox and the adapter will be turned off.

Configuration Utility

The profile manager tab allows you to modify, createor delete profiles.

Profile List Window

List all available profiles.If the Default box is checked, it means the profileis used in auto-configuration mode when theconnection is lost. If unchecked, the profile will beexcluded in auto-configuration.

• Apply Profile: Apply the selected profile.The buttons below are used to control the window.

- Move Up/Down: Move the selected profile up ordown.

- Delete: Delete a profile.

- Create: Create a new profile. Click the Createbutton and follow on-screen description to createa new profile.

- Save: Save changes you have made to aselected profile.

Profile Setting

The profile setting displays information of theselected profile.It is divided into three sub-tabs.

Network Info:• Profile Name: name of the selected profile.

• Network SSID: the connected network SSID.You can type a specific Network SSID in this fieldto limit the link to an access point or othercomputer equipped with a wireless LAN adapter.If you leave this field blank, the wireless LANadapter will try to build the link with any wirelessdevice that has better signal and link quality.

• Network Type: the type of network environment towhich you are connected. It could be infrastructureor ad-hoc. Infrastructure – This type of networkconnection needs an access point in range. Allcommunication is done through this access point.Ad hoc – A peer-to-peer mode of operation. Thistype of link is established from client to clientwithout any access point.

Configuration Utility

Security Tab:The Security tab provides WEP (Wired EquivalentPrivacy) function to ensure a securer networkingcommunication and prevent unauthorized access toyour wireless network. The WEP keys configured foryour wireless device must be same as thoseconfigured for the access point or wireless LANadapter it associates with.

• Encryption Method: Click the down-arrow button to select Security Off or WEP.

• Authentication Mode: Click the down-arrow button toselect one. The authentication type should be sameamong those connected devices.

- Open system: With this setting, any station in theWireless LAN can link with the Access Point.

- Shared Key: only stations using a shared keyencryption identified by the Access Point areallowed to associate.

• WPA – Wi-Fi Protected Access. Please Refer toPage.67 for WPA function configuration.

• WEP Key Setting: The WEP key setting isavailable only when the WEP is activated. ClickConfigure WEP Keys button to configure the WEPsettings.

- Key Format: This utility supports both Hexadeci-mal and ASCII key formats. Click the down-arrowbutton to choose one format. Only digits 0-9 andletters A-F are valid entries if you selecthexadecimal format.

- Key Size: Click the down-arrow button to select40-bit or 104-bit key size.

• Transmit Key 1-4: These four fields allow you toset four different 40-bit or 104-bit keys forencryption. This item is a very convenient anduseful function when you want to match the WEPkeys with different APs. After setting the WEPkeys for specific AP or wireless LAN card, insteadof entering the WEP key every time, you can justclick the button in front of WEP key to enable theassociation.

Protocol:• Do not change settings:

If the box is checked, then, all settings on this tabcan’t be change.

• Use below settings:- Power Save Mode: This field provides two

options of power management: ContinuousAccess and Max Power Save. Click the pull-downmenu to select the mode you desire.

- Preamble (802.11b): Select Auto or Long. Thedefault setting is Auto.

- Transmit Rate: This field provides options forselecting data-transmitting rate of the wirelessLAN adapter. You can click the down-arrow buttonto select one option. By default, the data rate isset to Auto allowing Tx rate to the highestpossible rate. It’s recommended that you selectthe Auto option.

> Fragment Threshold: This field is to define the maximum data frame size this wireless LANadapter will transmit and to improve the efficiencyof data transmitting.

> RTS/CTS Threshold: This field is to set the packetsize at which the AP issues a Request-To-Send (orClear-To-Send) frame before sending the packet.Type the value in this field and the effective rangeis from 0 to 2347.

> Rest Button: Click Reset button returns theprotocol settings to their default values.

Click the Site Survey tab and the following screen willbe displayed.

From the Site Survey page, you can search allaccess points and network adapters that are withinthe service range of the network adapter. ClickRefresh button, and the network adapter will start tosearch access points and WLAN adapters and showthe result on the list.

The list includes information about the Network SSIDand MAC address of the access point and WALNadapter, the signal strength, the channel where theaccess point and WLAN adapter operates, andwhether or not WEP encryption is used. You canhighlight the access point or WLAN adapter you wantto associate and click Associate or double click onyour choice to connect that device.

In the figure, you can see there are one 802.11baccess point and one 802.11g access point within theservice range of the network adapter. You may clickthe Refresh button to update this list and use thescroll bar to see more information.

Advanced Filter

Click the Filter button and the Advanced Filter dialogbox will be brought up. It helps you take more controlof searching AP or network adapter in range.

Network SSID:• Any SSID: If selected, any SSID will be used.

• Network BSSID:• Any BSSID: If selected, any BSSID is used.

• Power Save Mode: Click the down-arrow button toselect one option.

• Radio Preamble: Click the down-arrow button toselect Auto or long.

• Transmit Antenna: Click the down-arrow button toset the transmit antenna mode, either Antenna 1,antenna2 or diversity.

• Receive Antenna: Click the down-arrow button toset the receive antenna mode, either diversity Onor diversity Off.

• Transmit Rate: the range of the data rate dependson the type of AP the card is connected to.Thedefault value is Auto.

• Fragment Threshold: Set the fragmentationthreshold and the default value is 2346.

• RTS/CTS Threshold: Set the packet size at whichthe AP issues a Request To Send (or Clear-To-Send)frame before sending the packet.

Don’t forget to click Apply Changes to make yourconfiguration take effect.

3. If the network you select requires WEP key,then the “Data encryption (WEP enabled)”check box is selected by default. Select the“The key is provided for me automatically”check box if the WEP key is automaticallyprovided for you. The driver will then use theDefault Encryption key. If not, you have to clearthe check and manually enter the network key.In this example, you have to type the WEPkeys. After you enter the WEP keys, you canclick OK to close the Wireless NetworkProperties dialog box and the system will takeyou back to Wireless Network ConnectionProperties dialog box.

4. Click OK to save your configuration and the Wireless Network Connection Properties will beclosed.

5. When the network connection you have configuredis available, the following bubble message will beshown on the system tray.

6. Right-click on the network icon andselect “View Available Wireless Network”. ClickAdvanced button from the Connect to WirelessNetwork dialog box and you can find that there is ablue circle on the ESSID: Winson you haveconfigured in Wireless Network ConnectionProperties dialog box. It means that you havesuccessfully built the connection. You may refer tothe section of how to do TCP/IP setup to configureyour wireless LAN adapter. After the TCP/CPconfiguration is done, you can access the Internetthrough the wireless connection you have built.

7. Furthermore, you can highlight a networkconnection and click Move up or Move down tochange the order of the wireless networks in thePreferred networks. For Windows XP, it will alwayschoose the first one in the Preferred networks toconnect. To remove a wireless network from the listof preferred networks, select the wireless networkthat you want to remove, and then click Remove.

3. In the Wireless Network Properties dialog box, the“This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network;wireless access points are not used” check box isselected by default.

4. If the network adapter you want to connect hasenabled the WEP function and then the “Dataencryption (WEP enabled)” check box is checked.You can select the “The key is provided for meautomatically” check box if the WEP key isautomatically provided for you. The driver will thenuse the Default Encryption key. If not, you have toclear the check and manually enter the networkkey. In this example, you have to type the WEPkeys. 6. You may refer to the section of how to do TCP/IPsetup to configure your wireless LAN adapter inWindows XP. After the TCP/CP configuration isdone, you can share data between these wirelessdevices.

7. Open Windows Explorer and type the connectedwireless network adapter IP address in theAddress field. The folder that the associatedcomputer shares will be displayed. Now , you canshare data with it,

2. If you want to connect to an ad hoc network only,you can click the button of “Computer-to-computer(ad hoc) networks only”. Click the button of“Access point (infrastructure) networks only”,and only the available access points in range willbe displayed in the available networks box. You canclick the button of “Any available network (accesspoint preferred)”, and then both access pointsand wireless network adapters will be displayed inthe available networks box.

WPA Configuration

There are two configuration utilities to setup wirelessconnectivity with an AP that supports WPA – WindowsXP: Zero Configuration Utility and Odyssey ForMarvell Utility.

For Windows XP operating system, use the Windowsbuilt-in Zero Configuration Utility when associating witha WPA-enabled AP. The user must ensure ServicePack #2 and WPA Hotfix Q815485 is installed. (Pleasesee note.)

For Windows 2000, 98SE and ME operating system,please use the Odyssey For Marvell utility whenassociating with a WPA-enabled AP. The Odyssey ForMarvell Utility provides two ways of WPA operations:

- connect with a RASIUS server.- connect with a WPA-pre-shared key (WPA_PSK) configuration.

The Odyssey for Marvell configuration utility can belaunched from the Windows Start menu > Programs> Marvell > Odyssey Client for Marvell > OdysseyClient Manager for Marvell. The main screen willshow up.

You can click the Help menu and select Help Topicsto browse more information regarding the operationof the Odyssey for Marvell Utility. The followingsection describes how to configure the WPA throughRADIUS server and WPA-PSK.
