GARGANEGA (gahr-GAH-neh-gah) (Light to Medium Body)Used in the process of making the famous wines of Gambellara and Soave in Veneto. DNA profiling revealed that this grape is the same variety of Grecanico Dorato, the mainstay of the Sicilian vineyards. It is Italy’s most widely planted and the oldest planted grape variety. Northern Italian elites have been praising this wine, especially Soave since the 6th century, when a statesman by the name Cassiodorus to the king, Theoderic the Great described this wine as being pure and white just like a lily. 240 Planeta Alastro Grecanico Sicilia IGT, Sicily, Italy.......................................................................................................224

SEMILLON & BLEND (seh MEE YAWN) [Medium to Full Body]Semillon is a gold-skinned grape generally known for its richness and body and is often used to complement the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc and revered sweet wines, notably Sauternes. It is responsible for some of Australia’s most individual dry whites, in particular those from the Hunter Valley, which develop a buttered toast character with age. The Barossa Valley Semillons can also be excellent.

PINOT NOIR (PEE noh no AH) [Light to Medium Body]The wine world’s ultimate “Holy Grail”. This is a thin-skinned classic red grape variety from Burgundy with a notoriously temperamental reputation. However, in the right terroir and with the right winemaker, there’s no other grape like the Pinot Noir with a capability of producing divinely scented and wonderfully heady perfumes.

BARBERA (bar beh RAH) [Medium Body]Barbera is the most widely planted grape in Piedmont, north west of Italy. It is growing in reputation and capable of producing some very exciting and delicious wines. The best examples are from the hills of Alba, which can be concentrated, medium bodied, rustic and is best paired with teppanyaki dishes.

CABERNET FRANC (care-burr-ney FRONK) [Medium Body]If Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are, respectively Bordeaux’s king and queen, Cabernet Franc is its prince. Found predominantly in the Loire Valley and Bordeaux,it is the sixth most widely planted red grape variety in France and tends to be more herbaceous in style and often described as having the aroma of pencil shavings, herbs and pepper, with notes of tobacco leaf, menthol, and liquorice, and often rather dry-edged tannins.

CORVINA & BLEND (kor WEE nah) [Medium Body]Along with the rarities of Molinara and Rondinella found mainly in North East of Italy, they form the classic wines of Valpolicella. A light to medium bodied wine in general, but still with a great chewy and distinct cherry flavour.

MERLOT (MARE loh) [Medium Body]Although it is the most planted red grape varietal in Bordeaux, it has been considered the junior partner in the great Cabernet Sauvignons. Merlot has achieved growing popularity in the last decade to the extent of cult worship of certain. Merlot based wines from Saint Emillon and Pomerol in Bordeaux, Italy, California and Chile.

PINOTAGE (pee noh taj) [Medium Body]This is South Africa’s signature variety which was bred in 1925 as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. Pinotage is often deep red with earthy flavours resplendent of fruits, with hints of chocolate, cherry and some savoury elements which help to create a very elegant wine matching with red meats or strong blue cheese.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON & BLEND (care burr ney saw win YAWN) [Medium to Full Body]Known as the “King of Red Wines”, it is amongst one of the truly noble grape varietals. This thick-skinned, late-ripening variety performs best in the warm, gravelly soils of the Medoc in Bordeaux. New World wines, particularly from California, USA, Margaret River and Coonawarra in Australia are the challengers.

SANGIOVESE (sun ge o WAY say) [Medium to Full Body] Sangiovese meaning “blood of Jupiter” is the main Chianti grape which produces a variety of styles from youthfully lively young reds to the richer, more concentrated, long-lived and oak-aged style. Brunello comes from the name locals in Montalcino historically gave to the Sangiovese grape, due to the deep garnet colour of the wine. “Bruno” means “darkreddish-brown”.

CARMENERE (kar mer nee YEH) [Medium to Full Body]Chile’s own signature grape, this varietal disappeared from European vineyards in the mid-19th century and reappeared among Chile’s Merlot vines a hundred years later. The deepest, darkest, purplest of all red grapes need a long growing season to reach its fullest potential.
