Chorus
May is a very busy month for chorus students. We are putting the finishing touches on our spring concert pieces.
The Spring Choral Concert is Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Students will need to be
ready for warmups by 6:20 p.m. in the chorus room. This is one of the 2 concerts where admission is charged:
$3.00 for adults, $2.00 for senior citizens, and $1.00 for students. If you can’t afford the admission, please
contact Ms. Bezanson and arrangements can be made.
We are also preparing for all of the senior events. Festival Choir and Vocal Ensemble will perform at graduation
on June 10th at McDaniel College beginning at 7:30. (Students will be given field trip forms for this activity at a
later date.) Festival Choir and Vocal Ensemble will also participate at the school awards assembly on June 8th at
Winters Mill in the morning.
We are going to Toby’s Dinner Theatre to see Peter Pan on Wednesday, May 4th during the school day. June 1st
will be our music awards and reception. More information to come.
Service
Learning
Hours
Seniors, All service hour reflection forms must be turned into Ms. Hobson no later than May 6, 2016. Seniors
must have 75 hours completed to be eligible to graduate. This date is also important for students who have
earned over 300 service hours as they will receive an Exemplary Award at the school awards ceremony.
Juniors, please be aware that the county guidelines mandate you have 55 service hours to acquire senior status
for the 2016-2017 school year. Seniors who do not have 55 service hours will be retained in 11th grade. Winters
Mill policy strongly encourages seniors to have all 75 required hours completed before the start of the senior year
as it is a rigorous year of college and career preparation. Seniors who do not have 75 hours will not be eligible to
participate in concurrent enrollment, hold court for homecoming or board status for clubs, and will not receive the
privilege of parking on school property.
There are many non-profit organizations in the Westminster area where students can complete service hours.
Please see the website for more information.

Ten W.M.H.S. art students had work on display as part of Spotlight on Youth at Manchester Valley High
School. Andrew Dixon won first place in the photography division. Brianna Fleischmann earned third prize in
both the drawing and the mixed media division.
Senior Kayla Shipley’s poster won first prize in our school’s Drug Awareness Poster Contest. All of the entries
were displayed at the 11th and 12th grade school drug awareness assembly in April.
Senior CaSandra Green had a painting juried into the Congressional Art Competition for High School Students
hosted by Congressman Chris Van Hollen. Her painting was on display at the Washington Art Works gallery in
Rockville, MD.
Five senior art students earned their W.M.H.S. Visual Arts Letter. Brianna Fleischmann, Analisa Gaskins,
Laura Heilig, Allison Lamb and Kayla Shipley earned a minimum of 20 points. These points are given for extra
time, effort, and service to the school and community in the area of visual arts. The students’ names are engraved
on the W.M.H.S. Visual Arts plaque which is hung in the G hallway at Winters Mill. The plaque includes the
names of all recipients of a W.M.H.S. Visual Art letter from 2005 to the present.
The W.M.H.S. National Art Honor Society inducted eleven new members into their chapter in April. Welcome

Falcon Cards
of Kindness
Falcon Cards of Kindness (formerly known as Random Cards of Kindness) is a club whose purpose is to send
positive, encouraging thoughts to members of our community. We prepare cards for the veterans and guests
during our Veterans’ Day Assembly. We prepare cards for the annual Thanksgiving meal distributed by our food
bank. We organize cards to be sent to Big Mill students who are ill. We send cards to nursing home residents to
brighten their day. We send cards to military people serving abroad.
Falcon Cards of Kindness needs your help. We are looking for cards (thinking of you, blank cards, sympathy,
etc.). The ones you get free in the mail from various charities are great. We cannot use birthday cards, get well
cards, or anything with glitter. (Glitter can get into medical equipment or stick to a military person’s clothing.) If
you are a crafter, we would love any handmade cards. Donations can be sent to the school to the attention of Ms.
Celeste Jordan. Questions?? Email [email protected]
Hosted by C.C.P.S. Counselors and Carroll Community College
October 10, 2016 on the campus of Carroll Community College
Each fall, Carroll County Public Schools and Carroll Community College hosts a large college fair that attracts
over 130 colleges, universities and trade schools. This fall, and for the second year in a row, the fair will be held
on the campus of Carroll Community College from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This college fair is an excellent opportunity
to peruse the huge variety of schools available to our students; schools that students might otherwise overlook
during their frenzied search for the perfect college. A local college fair is an exceptional opportunity for students
to speak to the very representatives recruiting in this region; a chance to ask specific questions and collect
information from the people who know.
Please mark this date on your calendar. We hope to see you there.

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
Common Ground on the Hill
Common Ground on the Hill is a multicultural community of musicians, artists, writers, lecturers, actors, and
dancers sharing skills with students of all ages and with one another. In this way, we believe that we can improve
ourselves, our communities and our world as we meet, share, and celebrate our arts and cultures on "common
ground."
Common Ground on the Hill offers two consecutive, but separate, weeks of workshops in music and visual arts,
concerts, dances, dramatic performances, lectures, art shows and more on the campus of McDaniel College.
Service
Learning
Hours,
Continued
These workshops and other events feature professional musicians, artists, dancers, actors, writers and thinkers
from a wide variety of disciplines who hail from all over the United States and beyond, and who come to
Common Ground on the Hill as instructors to teach and perform. Students come to participate in workshops,
attend concerts, play music, dance, paint, weave, make pottery, write, engage in dialogue, learn, share, and much,
much more. Adults and teenagers can take workshops. Children ages 5 to 12 can participate in World Village, our
activities camp. In addition, Common Ground hosts a festival at the end of the two weeks.
A variety of jobs are available, from working in the Hospitality room or World Village and helping at registration,
to assisting with tent set-up and tear-down at the festival. In addition to service learning hours, students also have
the opportunity to earn a free class by volunteering 12.5 hours during the week, or free admission to the festival
by volunteering for a three-hour shift.
This year, the Traditions weeks are June 26-July 1 & July 3-8. The festival is July 9 & 10.
For more information go to: [email protected]. You can also go to Common Grounds’ website,
www.commongroundonthehill.org and complete the online volunteer application. *Click on Festivals to get to the
application.
Graduation
Statement
In order for a senior to be eligible to participate in graduation exercises they must complete the Maryland
State Graduation Requirements by the end of the fourth marking period of their senior year. Seniors who
are required to attend summer school after the date of graduation to make-up or meet requirements will
not be able to participate in graduation exercises until the following year. Check with your senior to be
certain the requirements have been or are scheduled to be met and that course work is being completed
satisfactorily.
Career
Connections
Planning your senior year helps prepare you for further education, career exploration and job skill readiness. An
internship is an effective way to do all of the above. This process should begin early to make sure you are taking
courses that will allow the most options during your senior year.
If there are any rising seniors that are interested in internships for the upcoming fall semester or spring, please
make an appointment to see Ms. Totten immediately so that an internship can be arranged.
Thank you juniors for making the mock interviews a great success! Many positive comments were given about
the professionalism and intelligence shown by our students. Appreciation is in order for all that participated in
this real life experience on April 28th, and the work and preparation that was involved. This is a reflection of what
will continue throughout your adult life in this very competitive world.
Students interested in dual enrollment need to contact counselors to see if they qualify to take courses at Carroll
Community College. The requirements include a 3.0 G.P.A., 94% attendance, and service learning requirement
completed. Students will need to take the Accuplacer test at Carroll Community College. Students can call the
college for testing times. If you have a disability, request special accommodations prior to scheduling your tests
from the Office of Support Services at 410-386-8329. After taking the placement test and receiving your
scores, make a counseling appointment at W.M.H.S. Counselors will help determine your schedule, map out
your course work, and get administrative approval no later than August 19th. Remember the courses that you
take at W.M.H.S. are free, and the courses you enroll in at Carroll Community College require payment. Make
sure you are dedicated to college level coursework!
