WELCOME TO WINTER SESSION 2017
Welcome to the School of Leadership Studies (SLS) Winter Session 2017
in Santa Barbara.
We come together from around the globe as scholar-
practitioners committed to academic and professional excellence in pur-
suit of more just and sustainable communities, organizations, and educa-
tional institutions.
At Winter Session 2017 we will continue to offer a wide array of
workshops and seminars for the students and alumni of our four doctoral
programs: the EdD in Leadership for Change (L4C); PhD in Organization
Development and Change (OD&C); PhD in Infant and Early Childhood
Development (IECD); and a PhD Human Development (HD).
Tuesday through Friday mornings begin with important SLS
community meetings – followed the various cross degree workshops and
seminars. On Tuesday morning, January 10, (7:30 – 8:30 am) we will also
have a special early-morning breakfast reception to meet and connect
with each other. This will be followed by the Tuesday morning Communi-
ty Meeting from 8:30-9:20 am where you will hear from the senior admin-
istration at Fielding about some exciting new developments in the Univer-
sity. On Wednesday you will be able to meet all the faculty in attendance
and learn of their scholarly and practice interests. On Thursday morning
your student colleagues will engage you in a process to explore issues of
particular interest to students. And on Friday morning we will again have
our energetic and fun morning Community Meeting to celebrate those
graduating this Session.
Students attending their first national session are invited to a
Welcome meeting Tuesday afternoon, 5:00 – 6:30 pm, where we will
share tips and ideas for your session and your doctoral studies.
Please note the special events planned for each evening. Of
special note is the Thursday evening launch of an SLS evening where all of
our doctoral graduates will have an opportunity to share their disserta-
tion studies with the full Fielding community.
Winter Session 2017 ends with our first SLS Graduation and
Hooding ceremony, where we will celebrate the achievements and re-
ceive the comments of our L4C, OD&C, IECD, and HD doctoral graduates.
We look forward to learning with you in Santa Barbara at Fielding’s Win-
ter Session 2017.

SEMINARS FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT
Academic seminars at sessions are not normally conducted for
direct credit. Many seminars are designed to introduce you to
the content of courses and build research skills and doctoral
competences. Students who sign up for such a seminar and
wish to receive credit must be prepared to do additional aca-
demic work in coordination with the faculty leader and go
through the contracting process. Examples of such work in-
clude academic papers, seminar presentations, readings, and
online discussions. Complete descriptions of the course re-
quirements can be found under the seminar descriptions on
SLS WS 17 Catalog .
