Flagstaff High School Winter News ________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________ Recruitment for ’15-‘16 CAVIAT Central Programs begins in January : FHS-Parent and Student Information Night is January 22 nd , 2015 beginning a 6 pm in the Hurley Theatre. Next year CAVIAT is offering program options for sophomore students. These are courses in Medical Professions Foundations and Public Service Foundations. For the second year in a row, the FHS Welding Team has won the American Welding Society’s competition. The goal for this year was to fabricate a working hotdog vender cart. Participants included: Dylan Davis, Jorge Jimenez, Travis Miller, Jacob Morrison, Kyle Nicol and Spencer Tinsman. Flagstaff Students Selected for Skills USA State Retreat in Williams: This experience allowed FHS Woods and Automotive students, Ben Shantz, Chase Hemsley, Kasey McDermaid and Joacquin Soto to work with others from across Arizona. The retreat challenged them to consider leadership responsibilities and furthering their education and respective skills. Country Prosecutor’s Law Academy.. FHS students, Randy Anderson, Hannah Clark, Justin Kerley, Alexi Hernandez and Amber Medina, were invited to spend an entire day meeting with representatives from the County Attorney, David Rozema’s, office. Academy topics included: plea negotiations, crime lab investigations, medical examiner reports, cold case investigations, criminal trials and grand juries, prosecution of domestic violence, misdemeanor crimes, juvenile crimes and civil issues in the county. The agenda was packed, but students were able to ask questions about any facet of the criminal justice system.

Mike Rust…. FHS Nominee for Coconino County STEM Teacher of the Year… Mr. Rust, the Welding and Metals instructor at FHS was nominated because he has developed fabrication courses which teach challenging science, math and technology concepts through practical application.

Flagstaff High School Students Honored at STEM CITY Reception…Darren Moore was nominated as the FHS- STEM Student of the Year. Antonia Perkins won the Bio-Stem Art Award with her “Beauty in the Reaction” drawing, which can be viewed at the T-Gen North Campus, and Jessica Stoney won for her “Twins” photo. Her winning photo is on display at the Museum of Northern Arizona.

Dual Enrollment Helps Students Transition to College… FHS offers college coursework in Career and Technical Education, English, Math, Navajo, Science and Social Studies. Students may earn three or more credit hours prior to

graduation and they don’t have to leave the FHS campus. Enrollment for spring will begin in January and fees will be due in the FHS Bookstore on or before February 14 th , 2015 .

Chantal Johnson and Mason Metzger) are FHS seniors and second year CAVIAT students. They were honored for their dedication and educational promise. Each of these students has been able to bridge high school and college exceptionally well. Additionally, one of the keynote speakers at this event was Nicholas Vallecillos, a recent graduate of Flagstaff High School.

AZ Construction Days Event… Better Than Ever!! Students from Flagstaff High School were able to meet with construction industry representatives to discuss apprenticeships, post-secondary education and training and they were able to participate in “hands on” construction events.

The Flagstaff Symphony and High School Students Partner for an Epic Event. The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra performed music from Hector Berlioz titled Symphony Fantastique and 30 advanced photo students analyzed the music

and produced imagery which accompanied this classical piece of music. This performance demanded many hours and extreme dedication of Mr. Joe Cornett, FHS Photography Instructor and his students: Ben Anderson, Lily Andress, Tyra Bizardi, Ellora Boudreax, Isaac Carlson, Zachary Chee, Rainer Connelly, Shelby Dent, Gillian Farley, Grace Frame, Allyssa Granger, Andrea Hernandez, Audrey LaFace, Byran LeFebvre, Chander Leonard, Alix Manci, Haley Martinez, Lauren McCartney, Amber Medina, Dylan Miller-Price, Taylor Murphy Bailey Padilla, Kennedy Partee, Hayden Pertersen, Madeline Schepper, Nicole Smith Tavia Smith Jessica Stoney, Shania Tsosie, Alice Turner and Samantha Woods.

DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Active at FHS….Mr. Young and Ms. Kraus, FHS Entrepreneur instructors, are the sponsors of this student organization which is intended for future business leaders. FHS Culinary Readies for Competition …. The Pro Start International competitive event will be held at NAU on January 16-18th. Students must make a 3 course meal in one hour using only two butane burners. No motorized culinary tools are allowed and two identical plates must be presented to judges. Students choose a menu which reflects their state. The FHS menu includes products from our community partners: Olive Garden, Babbitt Ranches, Proper Meats and Sprouts. (We are blessed to have such great community support!)

The menu is: a cream of poblano soup with lobster mushroom; a dry-rubbed tenderloin (Babbitt Ranches Beef) over a southwestern

bean cake, topped with an arugula salad, a champagne orange vinaigrette pearl and a trio of mousse (lemon, coffee and chocolate). The team is working hard to earn a place at Nationals. In February, the team will compete in the C-CAP preliminaries. Students qualify for finals by making the perfect French Omelet and the molded C-CAP salad in one hour. Again, the FHS students desire a spot at the winners’ table! Competitors include: (Pro Start) Fiona Nicholson, Alejandro Ornelas, Delainey Rowland and Courtney Smithson.
