FAVORITE TEACHER OR FACULTY MEMBER
The Alumni Association has an annual section in the Pollen Count dedicated to your favorite teacher, faculty, or
staff member. We would like alumni to please take the time to express how a teacher, faculty or staff member
made a difference in their lives. More articles are needed for the 2018 publication. Please send your article to
Annette Hess Mantkowski by February 15, 2018 at [email protected].
FACULTY CORNER
For the last few years, the Alumni Association has had an annual section in the Pollen Count dedicated to your
favorite
Teacher, faculty, or staff member. We call it the “Faculty Corner”. We would like alumni to take time to express
how a teacher, faculty, or staff member has made a difference in their lives. We would like to have more articles
for next year’s Pollen Count. Please send your articles to Annette Hess Mantkowski at
[email protected]. Please check out a Facebook page called “Thank a Brecksville-Broadview Heights
teacher”. The link is www.facebook.com/groups/2235300601091522/. On this Facebook page, alumni share
special thoughts and experiences about a favorite teacher, faculty, or staff member and that mentioned teacher,
faculty, or staff member may respond to the writer. This page was set up to encourage dialog between teachers,
faculty, and staff members with their now-adult students, our alumni.

BEES GEAR
We are frequently asked where alumni can purchase Bees gear, especially items with the old happy bee. Gear can
be purchased online or via phone. Interested in wearing Bees caps, jackets, sweatshirts, tees and more? Want to
purchase an item as a gift for a special occasion? Click, call, or visit Star Sports for all the latest Bees apparel.
They have many designs in stock. If you want the traditional happy bee embroidered on an item, just ask. They
can put the happy bee on almost anything they carry. See their online store at: www.starsportsoh.com or call 440-
838-3313 and speak to alumni and owner, John Starinsky '83. You can also visit their store located at 7032 Mill
Road, Brecksville. GO BEES!
ALUMNI FAMILY HISTORIES We all have enjoyed reading histories about the Wallace family, the Wood family, the Dillow family,
the Lockert family, the Reed family, the Carter family, and the Bratton family. We would like to publish
at least one family history every year about a Brecksville or Broadview Heights family/and or business.

BBHHS Alumni Association Pancake Breakfast - PLEASE VOLUNTEER
We are looking for an individual, individuals or class members to take over the organizing and running of the
annual Alumni Association Pancake Breakfast at Brecksville Home Days 2018. In the past, the Class of 1956,
Hank ’56 and Janet Burgers James’56, Elaine Zimlich Tupa ’56, Jerry ’57 and Sally Gunner, Dan Biggs ’60, and
Gary '74 & Annette Hess Mantkowski '74 have all stepped forward to keep this event a part of Brecksville Home
Days. We need your help to keep it going. It is the only annual fundraiser the Alumni Association holds, and it
would be unfortunate for it to become thing of the past. So please step forward and volunteer! If you are
interested, please contact Dan Biggs at 330-468-2866 or e-mail him at [email protected].
Childhood Games and Songs
By Annette Hess Mantkowski ‘74
Over the last few years we have reminisced with Don Faulhaber playing Crack the Whip and with other alumni
remembering how to play SPUD and sing jump rope songs. Why these songs stayed with us over the years is a
mystery. All you had to do was hear the first line and the rest of the song came back to you as if you had just
come in from jumping rope!
This year we are asking you to remember and share with us some of your favorite board games or toys that were
a big part of your childhood. There are two things I loved to do. I loved to color and play with Play-Doh. To this
day I still love the smell of a new box of Crayola crayons, no other brand will do! That smell always reminded
me of the first days of school. I remember going to Shaw Drug with my dad and begging him to please buy me
the box of 64 Crayola crayons with the crayon sharpener on the back of the carton. Nope…never got it. Dad told
me I could have a 12 cent Archie comic book! I still remember what shelf this coveted box of crayons was in
Shaw Drug!
I also loved the smell of a new container of Play-Doh! Who didn’t love the 4-pack of red, blue, yellow, and white
doh. I would sneak my mom’s cookie cutters, cookie trays and rolling pin down to my playroom in our basement.
I would spend hours playing with this stuff and making many trays of Play-Doh cookies of my own design. I
now have granddaughters and I color with them using Crayola crayons and we make their version of Play-Doh
cookies!
Both my brothers have passed away. Ron ’65 was 9 years and Jim ’69 was 5 years older than me. One Christmas
my mom tried to buy games that the three of us could play together. She bought Battleship, Monopoly, and
Spirograph. The one we fought over most was Spirograph! It was something different. When one of us was doing
Spirograph, the other two could play a good game of Battleship. I avoided playing Monopoly with either one of
them because I would always lose! I will always cherish the memories of that special Christmas.
For the 2018 Pollen Count, I ask all of you to think about what were your favorite games and/or toys. Please send
your thoughts to me at [email protected]. It will be fun reading about what other alumni played with
in their younger years!

WANTED…YEARBOOKS
The Broadview Heights Historical Society is looking to complete their collection of BBHHS yearbooks. The
collection begins with 1941-1942 – missing 1943, 1944, 1945. We also need 1951, 1953, 1965, 1967, 1968,
1969, and 1971.
It would be greatly appreciated if any alumni would donate a yearbook from one of these missing years. Please
contact Don Faulhaber if you want to donate a yearbook at [email protected], or call 440-343-
0231.
OLD PHOTOS AND STORIES
We are asking all alumni to go through their old photos, albums and yearbooks looking for “snapshots” from the
past. Any photos from everyday life in Brecksville or Broadview Heights will do. Maybe you have a photo of a
baseball game in the Meadows, Parents Night at a football game, friends having an ice cream at Dairy Dell, eating
a burger at Kuttler’s or a Memorial Day parade in which you marched. The photos could be of friends at a slumber
party, a camp-out from your scout troop or maybe a dance or family photo. I know we have a lot of photos just
waiting to be published!
We are also asking all alumni to send in a favorite memory or story from your school days in the Brecksville-
Broadview Heights Schools. We want to hear all about Homecomings, Spring Flings, club activities, etc. If you
could send in both a story with accompanying photos, that would be great! We would like to print the photos
and/or stories in next year’s Pollen Count. Please send your photos and/or stories to Annette Hess Mantkowski
HAPPILY, EVER AFTER By Annette Hess Mantkowski ‘74
After doing some investigating in the alumni database, I have discovered that over 400+ couples either married
someone from their graduating class or from a different graduating class. We ask that you share with us how and
when you and your spouse met and how long the two of you have been together. We had several couples respond
to our request. These stories were published in the 2017 Pollen Count. This article was a fun one to read!
Below is an example of what we would like to receive from some of the 400+ married Brecksville-Broadview
Height graduates.
Gary’74 and Annette Hess Mantkowski ‘74 My husband Gary and I made our First Communion together in
1964 and our Confirmation in 1968. My dad was Gary’s brother Bob’s baseball coach. We were in Catechism
classes together at St. Basil. Our two groups of friends merged during high school. We all started hanging out
together. After our final graduation practice, our friend Mark, gave me a ride home and said Gary and I would be
a couple one day. A few months later, we went on our first date and the rest is history.
On our first date on August 31, 1974, we went out for dinner at Lanning’s in Richfield. We didn’t realize that the
additional trays of food with salads and side dishes brought to our table were also an additional charge!
Obviously, we were not used to fine dining at the age of 18! We started dating in August of 1974 and married in
1978. We will be married 38 years this August. Please send in your stories to [email protected],

STATE ROUND-UPS
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Alumni Association has 20,083 graduates listed in its database
as of June 2017. We have graduates living in every one of the 50 states. We have several alumni who have
volunteered to try to start a Round-Up in their state. The lucky states are Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado,
District of Columbia, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, and Virginia. The Alumni Association wishes these
ambitious alumni the best of luck in their endeavor to start their own individual state round-up. **If you reside
in one of the round-up states listed, please contact the state contact person to see what you can do to help
organize your state’s round-up.**
We could use round-up representatives in Ohio. Maybe one representative for Cleveland, one for Columbus, and
one for Cincinnati. We could even take it one step smaller; there are 69 alumni living in Lakewood, Ohio;
24 Alumni living in Dublin, Ohio, and over 62 alumni living in the Cincinnati area. Take the first step and
volunteer! Please remember, the Florida round-up started with a few alumni living in Florida meeting for a cup
of coffee and look how their round-up has grown to what it is today!
If you would like to start a round-up in a region of your state or a major city in your state, please contact Annette
Hess Mantkowski at [email protected].

PAST REUNIONS
Class of 1952 - 65th Reunion By Don Larsen
The Class of 1952 had a 65th lunch/reunion on June 15th at Austin’s, right in downtown Brecksville. Sadly, we
were enjoying ourselves so much, we neglected to take any photos to record the event!
12
Class of 1957 - 60th Reunion By Barbara Leonard
The Class of ‘57’s 60th reunion was held on September 14, 2017 at Creekside in Brecksville, Ohio. Jerry
Gunner, Barbara Bender Kocsmaros, and Marilyn Kunz Shott, were busy as “Brecksville Bees”, met in April
2017 and planned our 60th class reunion. Bill Novatny got the ball rolling by sending e-mails to class members,
with a date to confirm. All-in-all, 20 classmates and their spouses replied and attended the festivities.
We chose Creekside since it was closest to the old high school. Classmates who came the farthest were Roger
Cook from California and Sandy Eier Roberts from Tennessee. Jerry Gunner provided our class with a bagpipe
player named Tyler. He honored us with the BBHH fight song and “Amazing Grace” for our departed
classmates. Everyone enjoyed being together, wishing we lived closer, and realizing what little time some of us
have left.
We are grateful to those who did come and to those who sent notes of regret. We are also grateful to Bill
Novatny and his great correspondence. Creekside was just awesome as our reunion venue. Thank you to Sally
Gunner and her wonderful 3 cakes for dessert…nobody went home hungry!
A big thank you to Jerry Gunner, Barbara Bender Kocsmaros and Marilyn Kunz Shott for all the planning you
did to make this reunion happen!
Class of 1973 - 45th Reunion
The Class of 1973 celebrated our 45th Reunion at County Line Tavern on September 22, 2017. Plans are already
in the works for a major celebration in Spring/Summer 2023. Over the next two years reunion chairman Jeffrey
Compton will lead a major effort to track down as many class members (including anyone who attended
BBHHS but left before senior year). For class news and other posts, check out our Facebook page: Bees 1973.
FUTURE REUNIONS
Class of 1958 - 60th Reunion
The Class of 1958 will celebrate 60 years of graduation on June 29, 2018 along with the 121st Annual Alumni
Banquet. We will gather at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Independence on Friday evening, followed by the pancake
breakfast on Saturday morning on Brecksville Square during the City of Brecksville Home Days celebration.
There will be a fun-filled event on Saturday afternoon followed by a casual evening get-together at the Pickle
Works. We will be sending out information to all classmates in early 2018 with detailed times. Please contact
Karen Nosek Gerber at [email protected] or call 440-526-9838 for further information.
13
Class of 1963 - 55th Reunion
The 55th Reunion of the Class of ‘63 is scheduled for August 24 and 25, 2018, at the Holiday Inn Independence,
OH. Included will be a sightseeing tour of Cleveland via Lolly the Trolley. Further details to be announced.
Additionally, the Class of ’63 has scheduled a Holiday dinner on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. at
Taverne of Richfield. Any questions about either of these events, please contact Carol Hanacek Schroeder at
[email protected] or call 440-526-3837.
Class of 1967 News By Sue Schultz
The Class of 1967 will hold its annual Christmas Party on Saturday, December 9th, 2017, in the Lounge at
Creekside Restaurant. The Christmas Party will start at 7:00 p.m. We had 26 classmates and spouses attend our
2016 party. It is always a great time so please try to join us!
The class of 1967 did not have a class picnic in 2017 since we were celebrating our 50th Reunion in June. Next
year, the tentative date for the 2018 class picnic is Saturday, July 21st, 2018. The picnic will be held in the
Meadows in the Brecksville Reservation starting at 1:00 p.m. Classmates will be e-mailed the details at a later
date.
Class of 1978 - 40th Reunion
The Class of 1978 will be having its 40th reunion in the summer of 2018. Further details to be announced, or
