Ourspecialguestspeakerisauthor,researcherandhistorian,Dr.LauraBrandon,whowastheCuratorofWarArtattheCanadianWarMuseumfrom1992to2015.HerpresentationwillexploretheWarMuseum’sGreatWarart–ascreatedbyofficialwarartistsaswellasthosewhoservedwiththeCanadianExpeditionaryForceanddrewforprivateviewingbyfamilyandcomrades.Dr.Brandonwilladdressthequestionofwhetheranywarartproducedduringthewaryearscanescapeentirelythelabelofpropaganda.
ThisistheofficialnoticethattheAnnualGeneralMeetingwillstartat7:30pm,withelectionstobeheldandourannualreportsdistributed.

SocietyPresidentMarcCockburnwillpresentamulti-mediatourusingGoogleEarthofimagesandmapsrelatingtothe
constructionoftheoriginalGendronCoveredBridgein1915.
Hewillhighlightthebridge'simpactonthetransportationandsocialnetworksurroundingthecommunityofWakefieldandothervillagesupanddowntheGatineauRiver.HewillexaminethehistoryofothercoveredbridgesandferriesalongthelowerGatineauriverandvalley.ThetalkwillalsofocusonthedestructionoftheGendronBridgebyfirein1986,andthesubsequentsuccessfuleffortstorebuildthenewWakefieldCoveredBridgein1996.
Chelsea Trails Collaboration – 2016 Thewintertrailalongtherailwaycorridoris10yearsoldthisyear,andithasgrownintoawell-lovedfeatureofwinterrecreationinChelsea.This16kmcorridorconnects8residentialneighbourhoods,andwillbeextendedanadditional2kmsouththisyear,tocheminLoretta.PicturedisGVHSmemberand Sentier Chelsea Trails board member, Alain Piché.
ThisjointventurebetweenChelseaTrailsandtheMunicipalityofChelsearequiresbothvolunteerhoursandfinancialsupport.VolunteersfromChelseaTrailsdothebrushcutting,installsignageanddopre-seasontrailmaintenance,whiletrailloversandlocalbusinessesalsomakedonationstosupportwintergroomingandmaintenancework.LastyeartheGatineauValleyHistoricalSociety,workingwithChelseaTrailsaddedhistoricalinterpretivesignsalongtheKirk’sFerrysectionofthecorridor.ThisyearweareaddingsixadditionalinterpretivesignsintheCascadesvillageareatoshowcasethehistoryofthatcommunity.

InMemoriam-MaryAngelineScottbyMerielBradfordInApril2015,asmallbitofChelsea’shistoryslippedawayasMaryAngelineScott(néeBrim)diedinTorontoinher102ndyear.American-born,Marywaspredeceasedbyher
husbandGeoffrey,whobelongedtoawell-knownQuebecCityfamily.TheymetinNewYorkCityintheearlyyearsofWorldWarII,andafteralifeoftravel,eventuallysettledinToronto.Foraperiodafterthewar,MaryandGeoffreyownedandoperatedasummerrestaurant,CandlelightHouseDiningRoom,onKingsmereRoad,atthecornerofSwampRoad.Oneofthewaitresses,LidWadsworth,whohadknownMaryinNewYorkasafellowmemberoftheCanadianWomen’sArmyCorps,continuedtoliveinthehousewithanotherfriendduringthesummer,evenaftertheScottsceasedtooperatetherestaurant.Thewomensharedaninterestinpainting,andduringthewinterstheytravelledtothesouthernUnitedStatestopaintandescapethecold.Alargeselectionoftheirpaintingsofsoutherncharactersandscenesadornedthewallsoftherestaurant,andwerealsoofferedforsalethere.In1954,whenLidmarriedEdRyan,thetownclerkofWestHull(nowChelsea),shemovedfromCandlelightHousetoestablishtheirhomeat51KingsmereRd.,nowtheresidenceofDavidYuill.TheScottswereverysuccessfulinvestorsandapparentlyoftengaveLidtipsaboutthestockmarket.Childless,Marywasagenerousphilanthropistwhocontinuedtobeanactivemanagerofthefundshehadestablishedinherhusband’snamewithintheTorontoCommunityFoundation.
LidRyanwasanoriginalfounderoftheGVHS.ItwasMaryandGeoffreywhobroughthertotheGatineauHillsandhelpedhertofindherChelseafamily.

Marc,originallyfromNorthernOntario,isalong-timeresidentofWakefield.HeworksatLibraryandArchivesCanadaasaCartographyArchivist.HisstronginterestinCanadianhistoryledtohimjoiningtheBoardoftheGatineauValleyHistoricalSociety(GVHS)in1999andhehasbeenPresidentsince2004.AsaBoardmemberoftheSociety,MarcbeganwitheditingtheNewsletterandparticipatedinplanningandcoordinatingvariousSocietyeventssuchastheAnnualAuctionandtheChelseaRemembranceDayService.WhilePresident,Marchas
designedanddevelopeduniquearchivalexhibitsandpresentations,andunderhisleadership,theGVHShasendeavoredtoopenupitsresourcestoresearchersthroughdigitalmeans,andtoincreasetheSociety’shugeoutreachwithpublicevents,andassistancetothewiderheritagecommunity.MarchasworkedtirelesslytoensurethattheheritageoftheGatineauValleyispreserved,known,andappreciated.HealsobringsthesameenthusiasmastheGroupCommissionerforFirstWakefieldScouts,andasaCoachfortheOttawaSpecialOlympicsAlpineSkiTeam.
Wakefield’sFairbairnHouseHeritageCentreconsidersGVHSitsmostimportantpartnerandtheirPresident,MichaelCooper,describesMarcas“theever-presentandever-reliablefaceoftheGVHS”andnotes“hislongstandingprofessional,enthusiasticandinnovativeworkdeservesallourrecognition”.
