This season’s guide can get you out into the preserves to go sledding, camping or hiking. Or read about programs at our six nature centers for kids, nature lovers, history buffs or anyone experiencing a little cabin fever. Most events are free, and every one is fun.

The Forest Preserves are a resource for everyone. So choose your own adventure: What do you want to do on your visit to the Preserves? Owl prowl or scavenger hunt? Date night or wildlife hike? It’s up to you—but no matter your choice, we hope to see you in the Preserves!

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING & SNOWSHOEINGVisitors can cross-country ski in all parts of the Forest Preserves, except for golf courses and nature centers. All areas are open to snowshoeing.Sagawau Environmental Learning Center offers a complete Nordic Ski Program, including groomed trails and lessons. Campgrounds offer snowshoes and cross-country skis for rent by campers. Check our website for details on snowshoe rentals at nature centers.

Students can � nd inspiration—and a paycheck—inthe Forest Preserves

Where Youth Learn to Love Nature

More than 700 students have helped improve the Forest Preserves through CCLC since 2009.

When Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps (CCLC) students fi nish their six-week summer job in the Forest Preserves, they sound proud, inspired and ready for their next challenge. “I like working here because I feel

like I am making a difference in my community,” explains Ben Wolowitz, a senior who joined 50 other high school students last summer on crews that remove invasive brush and maintain trails near nature centers in forest preserves across Cook County.

The CCLC job program balances important service work with nature-based educational experiences, focused on inspiring a life-long appreciation for nature. “I’m passionate about animals, and I think it’s important to learn about and protect where they live,” says senior Niana Smith, who also valued the team building and basic job skills training incorporated into each day. “Something I learned that will stick with me is how to work as a team and the importance of cooperation.” CCLC participants work and learn 28 hours per week, with transportation and work clothing provided. All high school students or recent graduates aged 15 to 19 years old are eligible to earn $10 per hour to start—and up to $18 per hour if they return to the program in subsequent summers to take on a leadership position. More than 700 students across Cook County have completed the CCLC program since 2009, gaining both critical experience for a career in conservation and the basic

communication and cooperation skills needed to succeed in any job. Next time you visit a Forest Preserves nature center, ask a staff member how CCLC students have made a difference at the site, from a bird garden at Sand Ridge to enhancing wildlife habitat removing invasive plants at Crabtree.

CCLC includes nature-based activities.

Positions go fast. Apply early! CCLC recruitment starts in January and applications are usually due end of March. The 2020 program runs from June 29–August 7.

When Deloris Lucas started meeting staff from the Forest Preserves of Cook County at community meetings on Chicago’s South Side a few years ago, she was already aware of nearby Beaubein Woods. The bike and wellness group she founded, We Keep You Rollin’, included the preserve in some of their rides for local residents. As the Forest Preserves began forging deeper connections with residents and organizations in the area through its Better Beaubein project it was clear that We Keep You Rollin’ was a perfect fit.

This year, we asked Lucas’ group to provide bikes so visitors could take a ride at our Beaubein Celebration and River Paddle events at the preserve, and supported her Eco Tour bike rides that conclude at Beaubein Woods, too. “The biggest impact is providing more ‘wellness in the woods’ opportunities for getting the community healthier,” Lucas says. The Forest Preserves holds more than 1,000 public events andprograms each year, and is looking to expand those offerings by continuing to develop meaningful and long-lasting

That could be leading a tour, holding a sing-along, bringing out toddlers or teens, a presentation on local history—or whatever you think your community would enjoy. Forest Preserves programs typically focus on nature education, outdoor recreation, or cultural and seasonal celebrations. But we will consider any proposal that emphasizes the health benefits of nature for people and communities, engages new and diverse visitors from all walks of life, or celebrates the natural and cultural treasures of the Forest Preserves and surrounding communities. In addition to providing space or a location for your proposed event or program, the Forest Preserves will consider requests that include an ask for staff support and up to $5,000 in funding.
