Professionally designing and installing outdoor ponds requires so much more than a liner, pump and filter, and some plants, rocks and fish. These days, clients are much more educated and de-manding. No longer satisfied with just the basics, homeowners are looking for a pond that not only fits their property, but pro-vides a living, breathing, habitat capable of providing interest all year long. The business of snow and ice management can be highly lucra-tive, if you know how to manage the risk. If not, you could be just one “slip and fall” away from possible bankruptcy. Join us as Tom Canete, NJLCA President and CEO of Canete Snow and Ice Management presents a one-day seminar about how to properly manage snow and ice events, before, during and after they occur.

From contracts to liability, to snowplow equipment and even snow books, Tom will cover every aspect of the industry. According to Canete, “every win-ter is different and every storm is unique, that’s why you need to plan for all possible outcomes”. When it comes to managing snow and ice, you have a very limited window to handle each event, adding even more stress to what Tom refers to as, “organized chaos”.

You will learn:• Basic risk management practices that every snow contractor must perform.• How to create profitable “busy work” between storms to make sure that your

crews are available when there is an event.• How to get organized in the “off-season” to prepare for winter.• The difference between internal and external operations.• What to do and not do if you have a very profitable year. • Strategic planning tips for a severe winter, a mild winter and everything in-between.• The future of the snow industry as projected, 5-10 or even 20 years from now

including equipment, internal and external operations, etc. • How to properly select trucks, plows and equipment based on the sites you manage. • Why it is better to have a mixed portfolio of contracts, instead of just one type.• What factors are contributing to the potential demise of the industry • Pre-season and mid-season training.• How national snow contracting companies are hurting the “independents” and

what you can do about it.

Tom Canete is ASCA Certified and the current President of the NJLCA. He is the owner of Canete Landscape and Garden Center, as well as Canete Snow Management in Wayne, NJ. Canete Land-scape was awarded contractor of the year for 2013 and 2014 by the NJLCA (New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association). Canete Snow Management ranked 22nd for Snow Contractors nation-wide by GIE Media Snow Magazine for 2014 and Tom received the Snow Leadership award from Snow Magazine in 2014.

In this workshop (completely in Spanish), you will learn how to accu-rately job cost your maintenance accounts to determine if you are making money, losing money or breaking even each day. Please bring a laptop computer* and a minimum of one day’s worth of data to class, including man-hours for a typical day and what you get paid for each account. We will help you analyze your numbers and make sure that you are prop-erly accounting for all of your costs. make them profitable. If time allows, we will set equipment rates, overhead expenses, etc. so you would know how to price for 2016. If this is information is not available or if you are just starting out, don’t worry, we will have sample maintenance accounts to work with.

Landscape Design, Graphics and Sales Workshops

February 16th, 17th and 18th - 8:00 am – 3:00 pm$495 members / $645 Non-members *Drafting tools and materials are required for this workshop

Customers are no longer satisfied with just an estimate. These days, they expect to see a landscape plan before authorizing you to do any work. Although you may know exactly what you want to do, if you can’t present your ideas on paper, they’ll find someone who can. That’s why we created this intensive 3-day workshop. To give landscape professionals, like you, the tools you need to be successful working in the design/build environment.

In just three days you will learn “quick and dirty” design, graphic and sales tech-niques that will help you sell more work in less time. All landscape plans and graphics will be hand drawn on 8 ½” x 11” paper, allowing you to work in class and at home. If you’re ready to grow your business this year, sign up today. This workshop is perfect for both beginners and experienced landscape professionals.

Residential Landscape Design (Tuesday, February 16th)We will begin with an introduction to the tools and materials needed to create a landscape design. From there we will discuss design concepts, working with both hardscape material and plant material. Finally, we will create a residential land-scape plan.

You will learn:1. The basic elements of landscape design2. How to develop a concept plan3. About scale and balance4. How to work with hardscape & softscape materials5. The tools required to create landscape design.

Landscape Graphics (Wednesday, February 17th)Landscape designers need to express their ideas on paper, showing clients what their property can look like. Without appealing graphics, a great design can look like a child’s drawing, immediately turning your client off. You will learn how to create simple, yet eye-catching graphics that will help your clients understand your design, so that they feel comfortable working with you.

You will learn:1. Clean and simple graphics2. Working with both marker and pencil3. How to work with trace paper4. Landscape lettering5. How to draft and draw freehand

Landscape Design, Graphics and Sales Workshops

We will discuss how to present a plan and a proposal to a client to get the results that you want. You will learn how to listen to clients, show them why they need you and only you, while charging the design fees you deserve. We will also provide handouts that you need to be successful in design/build sales.

You will learn:1. How to properly screen customers2. How to develop a program3. How to charge design fees4. How to present your plans5. How to sell the installation

Color Rendering (February 26th) 8:00 am – 3:00 pm$195 members / $245 Non-members *Drafting tools and materials are required for this class

Nothing catches a client’s attention like color. That’s why presenting a color ren-dered landscape plan versus a black and white drawing can be the difference be-tween a sale and a no-sale. You will learn how to quickly color render your land-scape design, making you plan stand out from your competitors. And you don’t need to be an artist to learn these simple, color by number, rendering techniques.

You will learn:1. How to create color rendered plans quickly2. Blending and layering3. Shading and shadowing4. How to work with colored markers5. How to create a drawing that sells itself

NJLCA Executive Director, Jody Shilan, MLA has over 35 years of experience working in the green industry as both a landscape designer and design/build contractor. Foreman and Supervisor TrainingFebruary 23rd, 24th & 25th - 8:00 am - 3:00 pm Members $495 / Non-Members $645

As a field employee’s skill set and experience increases, many are moved into a management role. As an employee moves from a laborer to a foreman and ultimately to a supervisor, training is critical. This middle management layer plays a huge role in your company’s profitability and consistency. How much training have your foreman and supervisors received? Until now, there has not been much field training available. This three-day class will not focus on technical training but rather on improving management

skills, planning and communications. Construction systems such as estimating, scheduling and project management will also be reviewed. This class will cover some theory but the focus will be real-world nuts and bolts information that can be quickly implemented.

Leadership and ManagementIn order to be a successful foreman or supervisor, you need to be both a strong leader and great manager, which is no easy task. We will discuss what skills you need to become a successful leader and how to develop them over time. Topics covered will include:• The difference between leadership

and management• Supervisor and foreman job

descriptions• Eliminating waste in the field• Systems overview

Communicating and Training EffectivelyYou cannot be a successful leader without solid communication skills and well developed systems. Good foremen and supervisors know how to articulate what they want and how they want it, so that the actual work can be performed prop-erly. Topics covered will include:• Communication systems• Developing standard operating procedures• Management fundamentals• Training fundamentals
