The motto “Education through School Sport” forms the foundation of high school athletics in Ontario, and there are countless ways in which school sport enhances the education of students.

Sportsmanship is a key component of this educational process and it should be a priority of every school’s athletic program.

The following story of sportsmanship was conveyed by former OFSAA Executive Director Colin Hood in the March 1995 edition of the Bulletin.

A high school football team trailed 14-10 with seconds to play. The team’s coach called a timeout to plan the final play of the game which was a pass to the wide receiver. The game restarted and the wide receiver caught the pass in the end zone to win the game. After the team celebrated, the athlete who caught the ball then came to the coach and informed him that he went out of bounds prior to catching the ball. The coach immediately informed the officials of the problem and the game was awarded to the other team.

In the locker room after the game, the coach congratulated the athlete for his honesty and then told the rest of the team, “Winning is for a day, a passing thing. However, honesty, fair play, and being a good sport are lifetime matters”.

The coach was subject to all kinds of abuse from members of his school and alumni for making the decision in an important game.

Colin’s story is a classic example of sportsmanship and more importantly the education of young people through school sport. The coach’s decision took

courage and he surely knew he would be criticized by those only concerned with winning the game.

This was clearly a “teachable moment” and the coach took advantage of it to impart a lesson on his student-athletes. It is an example of the essence of school sport and likely helped shape values the players took with them through life.

This clearly wouldn’t have happened in professional sport; there is too much money at stake. It also wouldn’t be common at most levels of amateur sport including school sport. It is, however, an excellent example of how sport can be used as means to educate students, and in the end, the students benefitted more from the coach’s decision than they would have by winning the game.

It may have just taken them a few years to realize it.

OFSAA and KidSport will be continuing the grant program that

allows student-athletes to apply for financial support in 2011-12. Students may apply for up to $250 per school year to cover their participation fees of any interschool sport teams they otherwise would be unable to afford.

Funds will be allocated on a first come, first-served basis. A student may apply

as many times as they wish, however they may only receive a maximum of $250 in the current school year.

Once approved for funding, a school official must confirm the student is participating in the sport before funding is released.

For more information, an application form, and to read the grant guidelines and rules, please visit our website and click on Programs - KidSport.

Each festival and championship will also undergo a “hard review” every three years to determine whether the event status of a sport should be changed or maintained and provide these recommendations to the Representative’s Council.

Changes to OFSAA Playing Regulations

This was expected to be the final year of a three-year grant from the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport Canada, in which secondary school leadership students taught students in their elementary feeder schools flag football, flag rugby, and ultimate. 103 secondary schools conducted the program in 130 elementary schools during the past three years. This was a win-win situation, as it gave the leadership students an opportunity to develop their skills, introduced a new sport to the local elementary school, and provided both schools with equipment and resources so the sport could continue in future years.

This grant has been extended for one more year

to allow more schools to take advantage of this opportunity. School applications will be accepted in the following order:

1. Schools applying for the first time to conduct the ‘Bridging the Gap’ program.

2. Current schools participating in the program but working with a new elementary feeder school.

3. Current schools participating in the program but choosing a different sport.

Full details are outlined in this Bulletin and an application form is enclosed. Information can also be found on the OFSAA website.

News from the OFSAA AGMAt the Annual General Meeting, OFSAA recognized the members of the Representatives' Council who are leaving in June. They are as follows:

• Katie Flynn is leaving after one year as the CISAA representative

• Vince Bellisimo is leaving after seven years as the TDCAA representative

OFSAA would like to thank Katie and Vince for their dedication to school sport and all their hard work as members of the Representatives' Council.

OFSAA also recognized assistant director Lexy Fogel, who will be

starting a one year maternity leave at the end of June. Congratulations to Lexy!

OFSAA continues its partnership with the Coaches Association of Ontario and teacher-coaches are encouraged to visit the CAO website – www.coachesontario.ca or a Provincial Sport Organization website for a schedule of NCCP training programs.

These programs will keep teacher-coaches updated on current coaching theory and techniques, and help teachers with not only the new terminology, but the latest integration of the Canadian Sport For Life document, with sport-specific technical training.

OFSAA's Coaching In Ontario Schools - Secondary course continues to be offered to Associations, District

School Boards and Faculties of Education across the province. The NCCP-accredited course launched in September 2010 in Thunder Bay and spread right across the province, including stops in Englehart, North Bay, Windsor and Ottawa. Over 50 courses have been conducted, training over 1100 coaches. The newly revised 3.5 hour format gives teachers and coaches the skills they need to coach effectively in the secondary school environment. The on-site workshop covers OFSAA rules, school and Board administrative information, long-term athlete development theory and the Ophea Provincial Safety Guidelines.

What does “OFSAA-sanctioned” mean?• All teams/individuals participating must be eligible

under OFSAA rules and regulations.

• All competitors must be accompanied by a teacher and the OFSAA supervision policy must be followed.

When do you need OFSAA sanctioning for an event?• If you are hosting an invitational event for Ontario

schools and you want all competitors to be on an even playing field, then you should get the event sanctioned by OFSAA. All promotional materials for your invitational should use the term “OFSAA-sanctioned” so that schools are aware of the eligibility and supervision requirements.

• If you are hosting an invitational/exhibition event and inviting teams/from out-of-province or U.S. schools you MUST obtain OFSAA sanctioning.

• If you are attending a sanctioned event in another province, your school requires OFSAA sanction

• If you are attending any sporting event in the U.S. sanctioned by the host state or the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) then you require OFSAA sanctioning.

Forms requesting any sanction can be found on the OFSAA website and should be submitted at least one month prior to the event you are hosting or attending.

Questions regarding sanctioning should be directed to Diana Ranken, OFSAA Sanctions Coordinator at [email protected].

IMPORTANT REMINDER: If your school is planning on attending invitational events in another province or the US in the early fall, or hosting teams from out-of-province, be sure to get your request for OFSAA sanction in now as it is a requirement. Check the new regulations for supervision carefully also. All sanction forms are on the OFSAA website.

The Ontario Olympic Youth Academy (OOYA) was held on May 6 - 8 at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. The 2011 OOYA was packed with Olympic guest speakers including Erin McLean, 2008 Beijing Team Canada-Softball; Adam Kreek, 2008 gold medalist Men’s 8-Beijing; Dave Willsie co-caption of Team Canada’s Wheelchair Rugby Team and The Olympians Banquet speaker; and Jason Burnett, 2008 Silver Medalist-Trampoline. It was truly inspiring experience, as these Olympians shared the story of their journey and what Olympism means to them.

This three-day conference was designed to educate Ontario’s youth about the values of Olympism and how to effectively use their voice to promote the Canadian Olympic values through the use of social media. Participants also engaged in an Olympic Values art project, a mini Olympics and were introduced to Paralympic sports including Wheelchair Basketball and Sledge Hockey.

Thank you for the continued support from the following partners:

• OFSAA• Canadian Olympic Committee

• Wilfrid Laurier University• ParaSport Ontario• Sport Alliance of Ontario• Civitan Sports Waterloo Region

A special thank you to the OOYA Organizing Committee for their efforts to make this all possible which includes: Matt Allen, Doug Buchanan, Anita Comella, Dan Henhawk, Steve Sevor, Mike Suraci, Lisa Wallace and Chair Steph Sutton.

Congratulations to all those who attended. This year’s group demonstrated promise to carry out their creativity and enthusiasm for the Olympic movement through blogging, tweeting, Facebooking and sharing videos from YouTube. It was truly a pleasure to have had the opportunity to meet the sports leaders of tomorrow.

The 2011 Ontario Olympic Youth AcademyOn May 5 and 6, 120 high school teachers, coaches, and athletic directors from across Ontario attended the 2011 OFSAA Coaching Symposium conference at Brock University in St. Catharines.

Over the course of the two-day event, participants had the opportunity to attend interactive coaching sessions, led by experienced professionals, in both the classroom and on the field. These sessions included taping, CS4L, Coaching In Ontario Schools, sports psychology, social media, track and field, soccer, ultimate, rugby, tchoukball, yoga for athletes, basketball, golf, volleyball, badminton, and many others.

Also during the conference, OFSAA hosted a tradeshow, which gave vendors the opportunity to display and sell their programs, products and services, while interacting with conference participants. There were a wide variety of booths to visit, as well as many prizes to be won.

On Friday, May 7, OFSAA presented the 2011 Investors Group Volunteer Sport Administrator Award to Brian Fuller of Saltfleet DHS in Stoney Creek (pictured below) for his commitment and service to his school, as well as

OFSAA!

A huge thank you to the presenters, delegates, and tradeshow vendors for making the 2011 OFSAA Coaching Symposium so much fun and such a great success!

OFSAA would also like to thank organizers Jean-Gilles Larocque (NOSSA), Lexy Fogel (OFSAA staff), Erin Gray (YRAA), Sarah Rush (NCSSAA), Lindsey Evanoff (OFSAA staff), Mary Cahill (student intern), and Jaylene Morrison (YRAA), pictured below from left to right.

2011 OFSAA Coaching Symposium Recap

OFSAA Women's Sport SchoolMay 2012This conference is a professional development event that brings together teacher-coaches from across the province to share ideas and get motivated. The program encompasses a wide variety of sessions for both curricular and co-curricular programs, with sessions geared to high school and elementary school teachers. The aim of the Women’s Sport School is to

increase participants’ knowledge in several areas of school sport, expose them to new/unconventional sports, teaching methods, as well as provide opportunities for discussion groups with peers.

10 THE BULLETIN JUNE 2011 www.ofsaa.on.ca 11

By Kary Roser, StudentSt. Mary's CSS

In today’s society, sports are occasionally recognized as recreational with no true value to offer their participants. This is not the case. Any dedicated athlete will declare that their involvement in sport has helped them develop as a person. Through sports, one acquires discipline, work ethic, time management skills, a competitive edge, social skills, a sense of accomplishment, and long-lasting relationships with teammates, coaches and even opponents.

At first glance, this photo seems to capture a happy moment for a group of girls. After further analysis, the differences can be spotted: two schools from the same board but with different coloured medals hanging around each individual’s neck. This picture was taken after the 2010 OFSAA Girls' AAAA Basketball gold medal game.

St. Mary’s (my team) won the contest, but Bishop Tonnos was also successful. By earning the silver medal, Tonnos performed their best in their OFSAA basketball debut, and also proved their third place ranking wrong. The game was a hard-fought battle between the teams. It was physical, intense, and every player was willing to do whatever it took to bring home the gold. St. Mary’s and Bishop Tonnos excelled in the Catholic league, GHAC region, and provincially. Both teams well represented the rising level of girl’s basketball as well as the caliber of play in the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board.

This picture also says a lot about sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is an athlete’s decision to show courtesy toward teammates and opponents and gracefully accept victory or defeat. At the end of the final game, both teams came together as friends, not opponents. Each individual forgot about the outcome of the game, but rather focused on celebrating their team’s accomplishments together as one.

Bill Bradley, former US Senator and NBA player said, “What’s the point of achieving anything in basketball if you can’t share it?” This picture was a way of sharing a special moment with current school teammates, former club, high school or house league teammates, and friends.

Another important value that can be learned in sports is respect and caring. One learns to respect their coaches, teammates, officials, fans and opponents. In order to respect one’s opponents, it is necessary to give 110% at all times. Playing at the highest level pushes the defender to play at their best as well. Players battle and push each other on the court, but off the court one finds a mutual respect - respect for the player and also the person they are off the court. This mutual respect was evident on that November evening, and is captured in this picture.

Both the final game and this photo demonstrate sportsmanship at its best and embody OFSAA AAAA tournament motto of ‘Caring, Sharing, and Excelling.’ Personally, it was a wonderful way to end a high school basketball career.

‘A Picture Worth A Thousand Words’ OFSAA 2010 – Caring, Sharing, Excelling Former OFSAA Rep Honoured at Ontario Sport Awards

Congratulations to Terry O’Rourke, retired teacher-coach from South Huron District High School in WOSSAA, for receiving the Syl Apps Award at the Ontario Sport Awards on April 14, for his outstanding service to OFSAA and school sport.

This award is presented by the Sport Alliance of Ontario in partnership with the Ontario government and the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport.

The OFSAA Executive nominates individuals who have served as members of the Councils or the Annual Assembly of OFSAA, have contributed to their local and Association organizations, and are active in their communities.

Terry taught at South Huron District High School for his entire 35-year career, coaching boys’ and girls’ basketball, track and field, rugby, soccer, and volleyball. His involvement in coaching also extended into the community,

where he worked with the women’s basketball Junior Development Program, served on the Selection Committee for the Ontario Women’s basketball team, and founded and directed the South Huron Basketball Camp for elementary schools.

Terry was also active in sports administration at both WOSSAA

and OFSAA levels. He served as President of the Huron-Perth Athletic Association, and sat on the WOSSAA Board of Directors for 20 years. At OFSAA he chaired the Classifications Committee, and continues to do so during his retirement. He also served as a member of the Sanctions and Demographics Committees.

Whenever events are held in his area, Terry volunteers to help in some capacity, and has worked on the Canada Summer Games, the Canadian Women’s Golf and the Canadian Amateur Golf tournaments, the Canadian Special Olympics, and OFSAA championships.

Terry’s calm, thoughtful decision-making, strong belief in, and practice of, fair play and good sportsmanship set an excellent example for the many students whom he taught and coached during his career.

OFSAA was pleased to nominate Terry and congratulate him on this prestigious award.

OFSAA President Lynn Kelman (centre), accepts the award on behalf of Terry O'Rourke from Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion and Sport (left), and Joanne Flint, daughter of Syl Apps.

Ontario Coaching Excellence Awards Recognizes OFSAA Teacher-CoachesOFSAA selected two teacher-coaches as the 2011 recipients of the Coaches Association of Ontario (CAO) School Sport Award. Congratulations to Jackie Trudeau of London Central Secondary School (WOSSAA) (above right) and Mark Sauve from Glengarry District High School (EOSSAA) (above left). Both are pictured with Lynn Kelman, OFSAA President, and Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion and Sport.

The CAO’s Coaching Excellence Awards recognize the significant contributions coaches make to both their sport and to athletes in Ontario.

Jackie Trudeau has coached in the secondary schools of WOSSA for the past 24 years, leading her athletes in cross country running, track and field, and swimming. She has been the Athletic Director at Central SS since 1999 and in 2002 was honored with the OFSAA Leadership in Sport Award for Cross Country Running.

Jackie has assisted many younger coaches, and has also been a mentor to many female athletes, influencing them to be involved in coaching.

Over the past 30 years, Mark Sauvé has coached badminton, soccer, basketball and hockey programs. He has been deemed a fantastic resource in our community and tirelessly assists beginning coaches in these sports. Marc has dedicated countless hours beyond the school community to serve as a convener and executive member of the EOSSA.

As the coach of student-athletes, Mark provides a role model for his athletes through a positive attitude and a strong sense of fair play. He offers leadership challenges within his programs in order to improve student athlete development.

Visit www.youtube.com/CoachesOntario for videos of these two recipients.

Congratulations to Rubin Kataki from Merivale High School in Merivale and Allison Haggart from Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto, chosen to be the male and female recipients of the OFSAA Winter Character Athlete Award.

Thank you to all coaches who submitted applications representing their student-athletes. This was an extremely difficult decision, as all of the applications were amazing!

Rubin Kataki (Merivale)was nominated by his coach Toni Agraniotis-House, who says Rubin leads at his school by example, and encourages others to perform their very best.

Rubin participates in swimming, volleyball and badminton in the winter, and cross country, track and field, and cricket in the

fall and spring. He has competed in OFSAA in both swimming and cross country for his school Merivale High School.

In addition to his athletic activities, Rubin is a member of his school's student and athletic council, and a few other extra-curricular organizations within his school, and also manages to find time to volunteer in his community.

"Rubin is involved in so many sports and activities it is unfathomable how he manages to maintain his high grades and never asks for extensions for school activities," said Ms. Agraniotis-House. "He is clearly committed to achieving his very best in and out of the classroom, and consistently makes mature choices to ensure he can

balance both curricular and extra-curricular activities successfully.

Our female recipient is Allison Haggart (Lawrence Park), who was nominated by her coach Ana Djuricic. At her school, Allison participates in snowboarding in the winter, cross country in the fall, and track and field in the spring.

Allison is not only an active member of her school's snowboarding team...she initiated, developed and now runs it! After her school initially declined to support a team in 2009, Allison persisted and arranged all the details herself. She approached Ms. Djuricic to be the staff supervisor of the team, arranged for all forms to be filed out and signed, ran the dry-land portion of the training twice a week, and arranged transportation to and from training days and races.

Allison's efforts paid off when both the boys' and girls' snowboard teams at her school qualified to compete at this year's OFSAA Snowboarding Festival, where Allison took home a gold medal in the girls' Level 2 giant slalom (you can see a photo of Allison with her team on page 16).

Allison is also a member of her school's Buddy Program, where she aids in the transition of incoming Grade 9 students and acts as an ambassador for Lawrence Park.

"Allison is a natural leader for the younger students, and acts as their unofficial big sister at school, " said Ms. Djuricic. "She is committed to making Lawrence Park a safe and enjoyable experience for incoming students."

Nike Corporate Citation AwardCongratulations to Nike Canada for receiving a Government of Ontario Corporate Citation for its long-time sponsorship of the OFSAA Cross Country, and Track and Field Championships.

The award was presented at the Ontario Sport Awards ceremony in April by Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion and Sport, and accepted by Aimee Beeston from Nike (pictured right).

Nike has helped raise the profile of these events and

improve the experience for the participating student-athletes. In addition to providing a monetary contribution, Nike also provides the bib numbers and hip numbers for all competitors at the provincial and regional levels, as well as the finish line standard and host committee clothing.

This past year Nike stepped-up their involvement by adding an "athletes village" at the events which enhanced the overall atmosphere for the participants.

OFSAA Snowboarding FestivalCamp Fortune March 4, 2011The OFSAA Snowboarding Festival was hosted this year by EOSSAA at Camp Fortune, under ideal snowboarding conditions. There were 289 snowboarders from 52 schools representing eight associations in the giant slalom events at the festival.

OFSAA would like to thank the festival co-convenors, Karen Dodds and Krista Petrie-Wallace, from EOSSAA for a well-organized event. Thank you

also to all the volunteer officials who help made the festival such a success.

As both competitions were on the same hill, the numerous spectators were able to see both the girls’ and boys’ competitions simultaneously.

Congratulations to all the snowboarders for qualifying for the Festival through their associations. The competition was excellent.

OFSAA BadmintonAurora and King City May 12 - 14, 2011

CISAA was the host association for this year`s OFSAA Badminton Championship, which used the beautiful facilities at St. Andrew`s College in Aurora and St. Thomas Villanova College in King City. Convenor Greg Reid had many late nights and early mornings planning this year's championship, ensuring all details were taken care of and it was clear that all the athletes and coaches benefited with a great championship experience.

Site convenor Paul Bedard must also be congratulated for ensuring the facility at Villanova was in perfect shape, and coordinating matches all tournament long at the main competition site.

Day 1 saw a lot of badminton played, but at the end of the day students and coaches were able to sit back, relax, and enjoy a wonderful banquet meal which

included guest speaker, and OFSAA Badminton guru, Wayne King. Also at the banquet, David Meijer, OFSAA Badminton Sport Advisory Committee Chair, shared some stories about this year's Leadership in School Sport recipient, Mary Parsons (Banting Memorial HS, GBSSA), including game highlights from when they were once mixed doubles partners years ago.

Mary has been playing and coaching badminton for more than 25 years and is a strong reason why the badminton program is so successful at her school and why her students seem to qualify for OFSAA each year. Mary also assists in organizing tournaments and events including the Banting Birdie Bash, a large student –teacher badminton competition. Coaches at Mary's school speak to her ability to use every opportunity as a teachable moment, whether in victory or defeat, and her positive attitude carries into everything she does. Congratulations Mary on a well deserved award.

Day 2 saw the competition heat up with game speeds

getting faster and play beginning to take its toll on the athletes. Day 3 had all medal matches taking place at Villanova, which provided some of the greatest viewing facilities in recent badminton history.

All matches were well attended and crowds were appreciative of the action taking place on the court. Congratulations is extended to all athletes in the competition, as nothing but great sportsmanship and positive play was demonstrated throughout the tournament. This is obviously a reflection of the coaches as everyone at OFSAA badminton seems to be walking around with a smile on their face, greeting each other like old friends, and creating a positive atmosphere for all involved.

Thank you again to convenor Greg Reid, his committee, and the host schools for hosting this year's championship.

North Bay was the place to be this winter for basketball fans, as the city was the host for both the Boys’ A and AA Basketball Championships.

Convenors Patrick Lalonde and Lorie Tremblay from ÉSC Algonquin (NOSSA) ensured athletes and coaches were treated to a well organized and exciting championship.

The top four seeds did not disappoint, finishing exactly in the order they were placed at the start of the tournament.

Ridley College (CISAA) fought their way to the gold medal game for the second year in a row, but fell just short of capturing the championship to a strong team from J.L. Forster SS (SWOSSAA). Congratulations to Kyle Osborne, Emerson Alvarez, D'Angelo Knox, William Laracaston, Arthur Thompson, Abdullah El-baba, David McDuffie, DeAndre Brown, Habib Haidar, Ty-Lee Jackson, Jermaine Lynch, Aymen Alwan, and coaches Pat Osborne, Mike Harrington, and Liam Murdock.

There was no shortage of food at the banquet as the convenors arranged for a hearty Italian meal that had enough leftover that "care packages" were made up for

teams to take back to their hotels. During the banquet, Lorie Tremblay was awarded the Leadership in School Sport Award for her 28 years of service and dedication to coaching basketball, track and field, soccer, hockey, and cross country at É.S.C. Algonquin. Lorie also volunteered as the NOSSA representative on the OFSAA Representatives' Council and has held numerous positions on local and association committees.

Also to be congratulated are the students from Pretty River Academy (GBSSA) who were awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner for their positive attitude throughout the tournament.

The Boys’ AAA Basketball Championship found its way down the QEW to St. Paul High School (SOSSA) in Niagara Falls.

Frank Capretta led the charge convening a championship that will be memorable for all involved. Enthusiastic crowds and fantastic finishes was the theme for many of the games in the championship, which saw Anderson C & VI (LOSSA) defeat Dr. John Denison (YRAA) 69-64.

Congratulations to team members Jackson Himbeault, Jacob Hutchcroft, Brandon Nickelchok, Dyshawn Pierre, Adam Cornthwaite, Samuel Dodington, Andrew Johnston, Mitchell Ledgerwood, Christian Ahyee, Jermaine Jones, Justin Edwards, Craig Williams, Duane Henry, Christopher Pinette, and coaches Dean Hutchcrott and Luigi Leonardis.

The championship banquet took place at John Michael’s Banquet and Conference Centre, where athletes and coaches were fed a fantastic meal in preparation for the start of tournament the next day. OFSAA President, Lynn Kelman, presented the Leadership in School Sport

Award to Brian Mulligan (SOSSA) for his more than 40 years of coaching school sport. Brian has been an avid basketball coach, helping out at all levels of basketball from elementary to university. Outside of coaching his basketball teams, Brian finds time to run camps and clinics in the community and once those are done he gets himself involved with provincial development programs for baseball.

St. Theresa HS (GBSSA) was awarded a deserving Team Sportsmanship Banner for their commitment to fair play and acts of sportsmanship during the championship. Congratulations to players and coaches for representing your school and serving as role models to all athletes.

Along with the Boys` A Basketball Championship, the AA championship took place in beautiful, but cold, North Bay.

The committee at West Ferris SS (NOSSA), lead by Larry Tougas, are always amazing when hosting championships, and once again raised the bar with this year's tournament. Using the great atmosphere at West Ferris and facilities at Nipissing University, fans were treated to a championship that could have had any team taking home the gold medal.

The depth of competition was so strong that it wasn`t too much of a surprise when the 8th seed from Smith Falls DCI (EOSSAA) defeated 3rd seed St. Christopher SS (SWOSSAA) in a nail-biting overtime gold medal game.

Congratulations to Curtis Onion, Dischaine Thompson, Paul Hicks, Cal Henderson, Mitchell Clemmens, Brandon Wilkinson, Vince Dufort, Sean McEwen, Brendan Judd, Nick McGonegal, and coaches Todd Spencer, Eric Lapierre, and Dan Dufort.

Following an exciting first day of competition, the athletes and coaches were treated to a wonderful banquet which

featured a large selection of buffet dinner options, a taped video welcome from Gerry Dee to the athletes, prize give-aways, and a former student guest speaker who shared stories and important life lessons.

Larry Tougas was awarded an overdue Leadership in School Sport Award for his close to 30 years of coaching, fundraising, and convening for West Ferris Secondary School. Larry is known for his heavy involvement with coaching basketball, but he has been just as involved with coaching football as well as coaching baseball and any other sports that need a coach.

The Team Sportsmanship Banner was awarded to the well deserving team from Twin Lakes SS (GBSSA) who demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the tournament and served as great role models for all competitors

OFSAA Boys' and Girls' Curling Thunder Bay March 23 - 26, 2011Dave Pineau, Mike McCarville, Russ Wakewich and their outstanding organizing committee hosted this year's Curling Championships at two curling clubs in Thunder Bay.

The convenors and their committee provided the curlers with a great Northwestern Ontario experience with memories that will last a lifetime. Well done!

The girls’ champions for the second year in a row were from Grimsby DHS. Congratulations to team members Chelsea Brandwood, Jordan Brandwood, Allison Easterbrook, Mackenzie Thomas, Charlotte Tousaw, and coaches Adam Thomas and Pamela Chun.

Congratulations also go to the boys’ champions from St. James in Guelph. Team members include Jesse Giovinazzo, Tyler Sagan, Carson Walsh, Jeffery Hamilton, and coaches Jim Whitechurch, Andrea Bruni, and Tammy Sagan.

The highlight of the banquet was the interactive trivia game hosted by Canadian curling icon Rick Lang who also won the first OFSAA gold medal in curling.

Rick was assisted by two –time world champion Al Hackner and the multi-Ontario champion Kristy McCarville rink.

Russ Wakewich from St Ignatius Loyola and Karen Saarimaki from Geraldton were the winners of the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award in recognition of their contribution to high school curling.

See the next page for results.

The Boys’ AAAA Championship called London home in 2011, thanks to convenors Tony Marcotullio from H.B. Beal SS (WOSSAA) and Angelo Provenzano from St. Thomas Aquinas CSS (WOSSAA). Leading a strong organizing committee, Tony and Angelo set out from day 1 to ensure a positive and memorable experience for this year’s championship.

This championship may be known for being one of the loudest OFSAA’s, as the gold medal match had the gym at H.B. Beal SS rocking. The teams from Vaughan SS (YRAA) and St. Ignatius Loyola SS (GHAC) must have had some strong fan support as the live streaming had so many followers it crashed the system! Both teams battled hard, but in the end number one seeded Vaughan SS emerged as the gold medallists.

Congratulations to team members Andrew Wiggins, Aiddian Walters, Henry Tan, Kassius Robertson, Roshane Roberts, Cy Richards Samuels, Troy Reid-Knight, Marcel Miller, Brenden Clark, Julius Antoine, Jawara Pedican, and coaches Gus Gymnopoulos and Mohamed Saleh.

Having two Italian convenors definitely ensured that the athletes would be well-fed. Angelo and Tony did not disappoint in the food department, making it a priority that everyone was treated to a tasty and filling meal at the banquet.

The Leadership in School Sport Award was presented at the banquet to Dan Colfax, who has been coaching school sport for 45 years. Although much of his coaching time has been taken up by basketball, Dan has also coached gymnastics, golf, football, and tennis. He has also organized leagues' schedules, hosted three OFSAA Championships, and has acted as the WOSSAA convenor for 10 years. Dan is so dedicated to coaching that he wasn’t even present to receive his award as he was 400Km away in North Bay coaching at the Boys AA Championship.

Although St. Ignatius of Loyola lost the gold medal, in addition to their silver medal they were awarded the OFSAA Team Sportsmanship Award for their commitment to fair play and handling of both victory and defeat with a mature attitude, demonstrating respect for their opponents.

A huge congratulations and thank you must be extended to Tony and Angelo for their months of dedication to ensuring a successful event and one that will be remember by all in attendance.

OFSAA Girls’ Gymnastics Windsor April 18 - 19, 2011Windsor played host to the 2011 OFSAA Girls' Gymnastics Championship, and the competition took place at the Forest Glade Arena. Anna Campigotto and her organizing committee did a fantastic job at running the event. Thank you to Anna and her crew. Everything ran smoothly at the championship, including a new schedule set-up that showcased the open aerobic gymnastics portion of the competition. Aerobic gymnastics combines aerobic moves with gymnastics and dance. It is a fun and energetic experience for both spectators and athletes.

Congratulations to the OFSAA Leadership in Sport Award recipient, Melanie Sylvestre from É.S. EJ Lajeunesse in SWOSSAA. Melanie has put many hours into coaching

young female athletes in gymnastics. She has also helped to organize numerous OFSAA Gymnastics championships, including the 2011 championship which she helped to organize while on maternity leave. Congratulations to Melanie for winning this prestigious award.

The OFSAA Dr. Gene Sutton Award was again presented this year in memory of Dr. Sutton. Dr. Sutton was a long-time volunteer whose contribution, commitment, and passion for girls’ high school gymnastics and its development were highly regarded. Congratulations to Kellie Hinnells, who was the recipient of this year’s award. Kellie has long been involved in gymnastics as a coach, judge and administrator at the high school level.

OFSAA SwimmingEtobicoke March 2 - 3, 2011

This year, Kevin Wong from GHAC took over from Michelle Harshman, last year’s OFSAA Swimming Championship convenor. Kevin had some big shoes to fill, but he did not disappoint! The championship was run with near perfection.

Thank you to Kevin and his organizing committee for all of their hard work and enthusiasm with organizing such a large event.

Kevin is not only this year’s OFSAA Swimming Championship convenor, he is also the OFSAA Swimming Sport Advisory Committee chair, and a swimming official for the paraswimming and able-bodied divisions. Thank you to Kevin for volunteering his time to all of these commitments.

The 2011 OFSAA Leadership in School Sport award was given to Paige Murphy from Robert Bateman SS in GHAC. Paige runs one of the largest and most successful paraswimming programs in Ontario. Her team was awarded the first ever Paraswimming Division banner at

this year’s championship for the highest total accumulated points for paraswimmers. Paige obviously is a leader in high school sport. Congratulations to Paige for receiving this award.

See results on the next page. R denotes new record.

OFSAA Nordic SkiingOttawa March 3 - 4, 2011Ottawa/Nakkertok Cross-Country Skiing Club played host to this year’s 2011 OFSAA Nordic Skiing Championship. Cameron Jones and Robert D’Arras of Sir Robert Borden H.S. (NCSSAA) lead a team of enthusiastic volunteers in hosting a memorable championship that continued to raise the bar for nordic skiing.

The fantastic facilities at Nakkertok allowed for challenging trails and great viewing areas, including wide-open start and finish areas.

Skiers woke up on day one to beautiful sunny skies, no wind, and a minus 20 degree temperature, allowing for perfect ski conditions.

This year also included the inaugural para-nordic event, something the Sport Advisory Committee hopes will help promote and grow the sport across the province.

Following the conclusion of races on day one, athletes and coaches attended the championship banquet at Algonquin College which included inspiring guest speaker Ray Zahab.

Following the feeding frenzy that occurs when you pack hundreds of hungry skiers into a room after a day of racing, the crowd listened intently as the Leadership in School Sport Award was presented.

A sea of smiling faces and thunderous applause greeted surprised winner Annette Wrigley from St. Mary’s DCVI (WOSSAA). Annette has been instrumental in the success of the nordic skiing program at her school and creating a positive experience that has athletes eager for the start of the next racing season. Annette also volunteers her time on the OFSAA Sport Advisory Committee for Nordic

Skiing, where she has been an active member for the past four years.

Although day two of the championship provided temperatures just below the freezing mark, a cold wind and grey clouds made the day much cooler for the relays.

The always exciting relays did not disappoint the great crowd that was present though, as they were treated to nail biting finishes, crazy costumes, and the non-stop sound of enthusiastic cheering for all athletes involved.

Possibly in a fitting manner, Huntsville HS, who will host in 2012, took home both the junior and senior combined banners. Congratulations to all skiers on excellent racing and being great role models for sportsmanship in high school sport.

Once again we would like to thank Cameron and Robert for their leadership and commitment in hosting a fantastic championship.

Mary-Jane Gillier-Symes opened up her school and two other schools within a five-minute drive in order to host this year's OFSAA Girls’ AA Volleyball Championship. Participants couldn’t believe the close-proximity of all the sites. This closeness was not only felt distance-wise, but also between the athletes, as 20 teams across the province cheered and played together.

Thank you to Mary-Jane and her amazing organizing committee for putting on such a fantastic event! Congratulations also to Mary-Jane for receiving the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award. Mary-Jane was surprised to win, but many in the audience watching her accept her award knew how appropriate of a choice she was after her selfless dedication over the years to high school sport and student-athletes.

Local team É.S. Gisele-Lalonde (NCSSAA), an underdog from the start, fought their way to the title of champions. Congratulations to athletes, Nathalie Drouin, Andrea Maranger, Ana Martin, Gabrielle Martinellie, Danika Chilibeck, Catherine Loranger, Rebecca Roy, Selina

Burgess, Sebrina Roy, and coaches Bianca Girard and Marcel Martin for your exciting win.

The Team Sportsmanship award was given at the end of the championship to St. Thomas Aquinas SS in Oakville (GHAC). Congratulations to the athletes and coaches from this school for providing a great example of sportsmanship to us all.

The championship organizing committee headed up by Pierre Blanchard and Melissa Amadio put their heart and soul into running this championship and it was obvious to athletes, coaches and spectators. One of the highlights of the championship was the banquet held at Planet Hollywood in Niagara Falls. Glitz and glamour filled the room as the athletes and coaches, dressed to the nines, dined in style.

During the banquet, Sue Kicul, from E.L. Crossley SS (SOSSA) was honoured with the Leadership in School Sport award. Sue has been working as a teacher-coach for 30 years, and coaches not only volleyball, but track and field, swimming, curling and tennis.

“Sue is always the first to volunteer for anything when there is a need,” said convenor Melissa Amadio.

Congratulations to two-time members of the gold medal winning team from É.S. publique Louis-Riel (NCSSAA) who took home the OFSAA Girls’ AAA Volleyball Championship including; Emily Tousignant, Vicky Savard,

Kristy McGregor-Bales, Melanie L'Heureux, Kara Anderson, Josee Maurice, Catherine Amyot, Nathalie Campeau, Karina Czechowski, Pascale Nadeau, and coaches Natacha Paquette, and Francois St-Denis. The Louis-Riel team was a force to be reckoned with, and teams will be training hard next year in anticipation of meeting up again with the Louis-Riel Rebelles.

Congratulations to the athletes and coaches from Patrick Fogarty SS in Orillia (GBSSA) who won the OFSAA Team Sportsmanship award. This was the school’s first trip to an OFSAA championship since its inception 25 years ago and what a memorable first trip!

This year's OFSAA Girls' AAAA Volleyball Championship was hosted in Newmarket, and the committee from Huron Heights SS, headed by Rob Archibald, did a fantastic job in organizing the event. This crew pulled out all the stops to ensure a great experience for all participants.

Sinclair SS from LOSSA played with all they had through all four sets in the final gold medal game to become 2011 champions! Cries of joy and exhaustion echoed through the gym when the last point was won. Sinclair also may have the most excited and enthusiastic coaches we have ever seen, which was great to watch.

Congratulations to athletes, Shannon Davidson, Danielle Gattinger, Emily Nicholishen, Jenny Richardson, Meaghan Salmers, Amanda Sexton, Lauren Stirling, Alexandra Whyte, Rayan Bourne, Hailey Coward, Rebecca Paul, Alexandra Walker, Soraya Weaver, Mackenzie Prins, and coaches Melissa Hunte, Andrew Dyment, Kate Kolesnik, and head coach Christine Davis.

Woburn CI from the TDSSAA did something not often done, they won the OFSAA Team Sportsmanship award

two years in a row. This is an amazing accomplishment, and there must be something special happening at that school! Congratulations to the athletes, coaches and to the school.

Rob Thomas was honoured with the Leadership in School Sport award. Thank you to Rob for his years of service, commitment and dedication to developing student-athletes.

Over 850 of the province’s best high school wrestlers travelled to Sudbury for the 2011 OFSAA Wrestling Championship. Sudbury Arena was the host site, home of the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL, and included 10 mats set up to handle close to 2,000 total matches.

Earl Cote from Confederation S.S., along with his organizing committee, worked long and hard arranging accommodation, soliciting sponsors and generally ensuring a great OFSAA experience.

After two days of excellent competition, Heart Lake from ROPSSAA won the boys team championship, while L’Essor from SWOSSAA captured both the girls and combined championships. Congratulations!

Ted Fryia of Sir James Dunn High School in Sault Ste Marie was presented with the Leadership in School
