Off-hand flourishing gets a makeover!B4283. Calligraphic Drawing: A How-to Guide and Gallery Exploring the Art of the Flourish by Schin Loong. 2018. 128pp. 8.5"x10". Paper $24.95

The book starts with

tools, materials, and basic stokes, and includes instruction for the traditional birds and for the feather quill. A special part of the book comes next, with exercises on creating light and dark textures in irregular shapes and how to use this knowl- edge, along with step-by-step instruction, to create a swan, crane, rooster, jellyfish, goldfish, peacock, parrot, owl, raccoon, elephant, puppy, rabbit, fox, and zebra. Flourished banners and cartouches and adding lettering to your flourished animals are also covered. The text and how-to’s move from the simplest to the most challenging designs, with examples to inspire you.

B4238. Calligraphy Styling by Veronica Halim. 2018. 160pp. 7.25"x10.25". Paper $19.95

After a discussion of tools and

materials, you will find excellent exemplar alphabets for caps and lowercase (with stroke direction and hints) for two scripts: Copperplate and Modern Calligraphy, including flourished caps. Next, connect-

ing letters and tips on using caps. There is good stuff here for intermediate scribes and for beginners as a second book. But the main reason to buy the book is the projects, which are sophisticated and stylish, artful rather than crafty. They include various greeting cards and paper ornaments, monograms and stationeries, calligraphy styling with flowers, papers and packaging. Some are just pointed pen script, some require basic drawing/painting skills, others just use splotches, strokes or washes. There is a special section on weddings and other gatherings, but most every project and technique has wedding potential.

This printmaking paper was a hit at the two Cheerio Calligraphy Retreats last fall. While the book is targeted to commercial promotion, the designs are appropriate for use in hand-done papercraft and bookcraft projects. Some designs are interactive toys that turn inside out or reveal hidden faces when manipulated, others are ingenious ways to fold-up letters, brochures, and posters, or to create novelty envelopes and leaflets.

B3558. Cut and Fold Techniques for Pop-Up Designs by Paul Jackson. 2014. 128pp. 8.75"x8.75". Paper $24.95. SALE $20.96

While marketed to designers, this

book is a gem for those of us making objects by hand. Use these simple techniques to create exciting, but surprisingly easy-to-make, 3-D designs. Each pop-up is cut from a single sheet of paper, which is ideal for cards, but they are equally suited for bookmakers when the designs are repeated in an accordion fold structure. The emphasis is on surface design over complex cutting. Each chapter introduces a new technique and shows it can be adapted in many different ways or combined with techniques from earlier chapters.

In this comprehensive biography of Hermann Zapf, Jerry Kelly, Zapf ’s friend and colleague

of almost forty years, traces the artist’s life from his youth in Nuremberg to his retirement in Darmstadt. Scrupulously researched at the Hermann Zapf archive in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel and at the Cary Collection at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and enriched by decades of conversations with Zapf and his associates, the book details Zapf ’s experiences with type companies, printers, publishers and colleagues. It explores his modern design aesthetic and engagement with the staggering technological advances of typography during the twentieth century. Featuring rarities and never-before-seen works and photos, it also includes definitive lists of Zapf ’s type designs and major calligraphic works. However, the volume is more than an in-depth appreciation of Zapf ’s work; it is about his work in relation to his life.
